Families from across the community gathered at Young Patriots Park for Riverview Recreation Department’s second annual Family Campout, enjoying an evening filled with outdoor fun, games, and memorable activities.

The event featured family relay games, a community cookout, campfire activities, s’mores, live music, and a movie in the park, giving families the opportunity to spend a night “camping” together before cleanup at 10pm.

A special thank you went to Atria Kinghaven for providing hamburgers for the cookout, helping keep campers well-fed throughout the evening. Organizers also recognized Mr. Washburn for leading campfire songs while children enjoyed making s’mores around the bonfire.

The annual event once again brought families together for an evening of laughter, friendship, and community spirit, with organizers already looking forward to welcoming campers back for next year’s Family Campout.

Enjoying Summer, Planning Riverview’s Future My fellow Riverview residents, Summer is in full swing and a myriad of family events have happened and there are plenty more to come.

Our annual free summer concert series started Wednesday, July 1st and runs through Wednesday, August 26th, 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Every year these concerts draw more and more viewers who have enjoyed some remarkable performances along with some great food from the food trucks. I suggest you get to Young Patriot’s Park early, the good spots fill fast, oh wait, ANDREW all the spots are good spots in SWIFT the park. All these concerts are courtesy of the following Riverview businesses.

Rivergate Health Services, Rivergate Terrace, and The Clinic Cannabis Company. When attending the concerts, please stop by their booths and give them a great big “Thank You.” This year, we’ve added a Riverview Farmer’s Market also on Wednesdays through September in Young Patriot’s Park. Jenn Evans, Racheal Kilbourne and The Market Social have put together an astounding array of vendors, crafters, entertainment, food trucks, and yes, even vegetables! The Riverview Farmers Market is open from 2:00pm till 7:30pm.

Shop at the market early for the best selection and then stick around for an incredible concert. All free in Downriver’s Biggest Small City, Riverview.

And speaking of things to do in our wonderful city, please check this paper and the Riverview Recreation Department’s Facebook page for a myriad of activities and programs for the younger residents along with a plethora of trips, classes, and picnics for those of us on the little older side.

I would like to acknowledge the new Riverview Rotary Club. In mid-July, they organized the 5th annual Concert-on-the-Course on Sunday, July 19th, at the Riverview Highlands Golf Practice Facility.

This summer’s favorite concert was led by Mr. Steve Washburn, acoustic guitarist. Steve was followed by another popular Downriver favorite, The Transit Brothers. This group of musicians are known for their rock-n-roll revue playing the greatest horn band hits of all time. This year, Chris French and the Transit Brothers performed their new Huey Lewis and the News tribute. The crowd loved the show while they sat in their lawn chairs on the golf course. Along with a great concert, the crowd enjoyed a great view of the “View” from the elevated landscape.

The concert was a complete success and the Rotary collected more than one hundred canned goods for the St. Cyprian food bank. As we move toward the November election, Riverview residents will be asked to consider two important ballot initiatives that could significantly shape the future of our community for decades to come.

One proposal concerns the future funding of our local road system through a road bond initiative.

The second asks voters whether the City should be authorized to sell a portion of the Riverview Highlands Golf Course property for residential redevelopment while preserving our championship 18-hole golf course.

These are important decisions, and ultimately, they belong to you, the voters of Riverview.

My goal, and the goal of the City Council and administration, is to ensure every resident can understand the facts before casting a ballot. Whether you ultimately support or oppose either proposal, I encourage you to make your decision based on accurate information rather than speculation, rumors, or social media commentary.

Every resident uses our streets. Whether you’re driving to work, taking your children to school, walking through your neighborhood, or relying on emergency responders, the condition of our roads affects each of us every day.

The proposed road bond would provide funding to continue improving neighborhood streets and major roadways throughout the city. Well-maintained roads not only improve the driving experience, but also enhance public safety, protect vehicles from unnecessary wear and tear, improve emergency response times, and help preserve property values.

Over the coming weeks, the City will continue providing detailed information about the proposed road bond, including the projects that would be completed, estimated costs, anticipated timelines, and the financial impact on taxpayers.

The second proposal asks voters whether the City should be authorized to sell a portion of the Riverview Highlands Golf Course property for residential redevelopment.

This proposal is being considered because Riverview faces a financial reality that cannot be ignored. For many years, landfill revenues have helped fund City services. As residents know, the landfill is expected to reach the end of its useful life in the coming years. As that revenue source declines and eventually disappears, the City must identify responsible, long-term alternatives to help maintain the quality services our residents expect.

At the same time, communities throughout Southeast Michigan continue to experience a shortage of new housing opportunities for young families,

professionals, and empty nesters.

The concept being presented would preserve Riverview Highlands as an outstanding 18-hole championship golf course while utilizing a portion of underused property for approximately 300 to 400 new homes. The additional residential tax base would help offset the future loss of landfill revenue while creating new housing opportunities for current and future Riverview residents.

Throughout this process, many thoughtful questions have been raised by residents regarding traffic, infrastructure, public safety, schools, environmental impacts, wetlands, flooding, property values, utilities, and the long-term vision for the property. These are exactly the kinds of questions that should be asked. They deserve complete and factual answers, and the City is committed to providing them.

Over the next several months, the City will continue to provide information through public meetings, informational presentations, our website, and our official Facebook page. I encourage every resident to review the available materials, attend meetings, when possible, ask questions, and learn as much as you can about both proposals.

This election is not simply about roads or redevelopment. It is about planning responsibly for Riverview’s future and allowing the community to determine the direction it wishes to take.

Most importantly, remember that neither proposal can move forward without voter approval. The final decision rests where it should be, with the people of Riverview.

Please take the time to educate yourself, review the information available, and most importantly, make your voice heard by voting this November.

Books, Robots, and Pirate Pride

RCSD families and students were thrilled to meet Michael Hyacinthe, creator of Wimee, the nationally recognized PBS character. Michael shared the inspiring story behind Wimee and how a simple robot made from reusable materials grew into a beloved educational character that encourages creativity, imagination, and learning. Wimee interacted with our students and Michael read two stories. It sure was a wonderful morning of books, learning, and family fun! A big thank you to Barnes and Noble in Allen Park for organizing and hosting this event for our district. Another big shout out of gratitude to our Elementary COSA, Brianna Niefert, Memorial’s STEAM teacher, Mrs. Gwardinski, and Forest Fourth Grade Teacher, Ms. Curry for their donation of time and support to create a day of Pirate Pride!

Riverview Families, Students Explore Detroit’s Rich History A group of Riverview students that are part of the English Language Learner (ELL) program, parents, and school staff recently took a break from summer actives and attended an exciting educational field trip to Detroit. The day was filled with learning, culture, and community connection.

The adventure began at Riverview Middle School, where students, parents, and staff boarded a bus and headed to downtown Detroit. The trip was designed to help ELL students strengthen their understanding of local history while experiencing some of the region’s most treasured cultural institutions firsthand.

Before diving into Detroit’s fascinating past, the group enjoyed lunch at the renowned Detroit Institute of Arts. Sharing a meal together gave students and families an opportunity to connect,

reflect on the day, and prepare for the afternoon’s activities.

The highlight of the trip was a guided tour of the Detroit Historical Museum. Students explored exhibits showcasing Detroit’s rich history, from its early settlement and industrial growth to its influential role in music, culture, and innovation.

The museum’s interactive displays and engaging stories brought history to life, helping students better understand the community and region they now call home.

Adding a memorable and unexpected local connection to the experience, the tour was led by the son of a Riverview teacher. The coincidence helped make the visit feel even more personal. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and storytelling kept the group engaged throughout the tour and provided a

unique perspective on Detroit’s history.

Participants described the experience as both fun and informative. For many students, seeing history presented in an interactive setting helped deepen their understanding of lessons they learn at school. Parents appreciated the opportunity to learn alongside their children and to explore important local landmarks together.

The field trip reflects Riverview Community Schools’ ongoing commitment to providing meaningful educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom. By connecting students with local history, culture, and community resources, the ELL program continues to foster learning, engagement, and a sense of belonging for families throughout the district.

The Road Ahead: Understanding the November Ballot CITY OF RIVERVIEW ROAD BOND PROPOSAL

“Shall the City of Riverview, County of Wayne, Michigan, borrow the principal sum of not to exceed Ten Million Dollars ($10,000,000) and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds, in one or more series, payable in not to exceed ten (10) years from the date of issue of each series, for the purpose of paying the cost to acquire, construct, furnish and equip road improvements throughout the city, including water main replacements, including interests in land, necessary rights-ofway and appurtenances and attachments thereto? If approved, the estimated millage to be levied in 2027 is 2.5211 mills ($2.5211 per $1,000 of taxable value) and the estimated simple average annual millage rate required to retire the bonds is 2.5229 mills ($2.5229 per $1,000 of taxable value).”

Why are residents being asked to approve a Road Millage?

Safe, well-maintained roads are essential to keeping Riverview a desirable place to live and do business, and to attract new residents and employers to invest. They also enhance quality of life by improving police and fire response times while strengthening safety for students, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The new millage would fund the installation, improvement, and reconstruction of the City’s roads.

It would also cover related needs, including water main replacements, interests in land, and the necessary rights-of-way and attachments.

The current state of roads in the City of Riverview is displayed in the most recent Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) Map provided by

the Charles E. Raines Civil Engineers/Surveyors company (see PASER map above).

When did the last Road Millage expire?

The last millage expired in 2025. Delaying repairs typically raise costs, because road damage grows more severe over time which makes them more expensive to fix.

How much will the Road Millage cost me?

The Average Taxable Value in the City of Riverview is $104,293 so it would cost the average taxpayer in the first year the millage was levied (in 2027) approximately $262.93.

Calculated as follows: $104,293 divided by $1,000 of taxable value x 2.5211 mills = $262.93 Because a bond’s millage rate can shift slightly

from year to year (as property values change and the debt gets paid down), the estimated simple average annual millage rate – the amount taxpayers would pay in subsequent years until the debt is gone – is calculated at $2.5229 mills.

Calculated as follows: $104,293 divided by $1,000 of taxable value x 2.5229 mills = $263.12 the estimated amount to be paid in years 2 through 10 when the bond is retired.

How will the Road Millage funds be managed year-over-year?

Bond proceeds will be placed in a separate capital

improvement fund to only be used for all road improvements associated with the millage. Another separate debt fund will accumulate property taxes

raised from the millage to pay the required annual debt payments. Both funds will be audited annually by the City’s auditors.

RIVERVIEW HIGHLANDS GOLF COURSE PROPOSAL

“Shall the City of Riverview be authorized to publicly sell a portion of the City of Riverview’s Highlands Golf Course property, previously dedicated for recreational purposes, to the highest qualified bidder subject to City Council’s approval, for the development of a Community Park and approximately 400 Residential Housing Units? The property to be sold is located within the Riverview Highlands Golf Course and consists of not to exceed 80 acres of land (out of a total of approximately of 248.5 acres +/), adjacent to and west of the Forest Subdivision and north of King Road.”

YES NO Why is the sale of a portion of the Riverview Highlands Golf Course being considered for redevelopment?

The sale of a portion of the golf course is being considered for multiple reasons: With the closure of the landfill, roughly $3.5 million or about 30% of the City’s budget is no longer transferred from the Riverview Land Preserve into the general fund to help pay for essential City services like police and fire. The portion of land being considered for sale could be redeveloped into approximately 400 new residential housing units, generating new tax revenue that could help replace the funding previously provided by the landfill.

New residential housing units could allow the City to address the demand for housing needs and increase property values while preserving green space and continuing the operation of a municipal golf course.

New homes could also help fund our schools.

Roughly one-third of local property taxes go to schools, so each new home would add to that sup-

port. The state also provides approximately $10,000 per student to schools. Therefore, according to the National Home Builders Association, a new singlefamily construction typically yields 0.34 students, and a multi-unit construction typically yields 0.49 students. Assuming 200 new single-family homes and 200 new multi-family units totals a projected 166 students or $1,660,000 annually in state funding for our schools. These funds could go toward facility, equipment, and program improvements - investments that may help attract even more students.

Redeveloping a portion of the golf course could make soil available to cap the remaining portion of the landfill. Excavating and using the soil on-site is estimated to cost $1.5 million to $2 million, compared with approximately $8 million to purchase clean fill from elsewhere - a potential savings of up to $6.5 million for the City. $6 million to $6.5 million: $8 million − $2 million = $6 million $8 million − $1.5 million = $6.5 million

Funds from the sale of the land OR savings from harvesting the soil as described above could be used to upgrade the remainder of the golf course which needs repair. The golf course is 53 years old and needs new irrigation and drainage systems as well as new tee boxes and greens. The Red and Gold courses need new tee boxes ($360,000), upgraded fairways ($450,000) and bunkers ($500,000) for a total of $1,310,000. The Blue Course would cost an additional $1,500,000 to upgrade with new bunkers, tee boxes, fairways, and irrigation. Riverview Highlands has been maintained but never upgraded.

If approved, Riverview Highlands Golf Course will have a number of holes closed and reopened during the various phases of the construction.

A community park could also be included in the property redevelopment to enrich the quality of life for residents by providing additional recreational opportunities, supporting health and wellness, and creating a community gathering space.

The Riverview Community Neighborhood Watch (RCNW) hosted its annual National Night Out celebration on the first Tuesday of August from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Young Patriots Park. The event brought together Riverview residents from across the city and local first responders for an evening focused on community, safety, and neighborhood camaraderie.

Families enjoyed a variety of free activities and attractions, including complimentary ice cream provided by A Serendipity Cakery and Ice Cream, face painting by Carey Ann of Carey Ann’s Clown Caravan, music from My Friends DJ Service, police and fire vehicle displays, and inflatable water slides and a bounce house supplied by ZZR Party Rentals.

Each year, the RCNW operates a booth at Riverview Summerfest to raise funds for both the annual National Night Out celebration and the organization’s Christmas party. In addition to its fundraising efforts, the organization relies on generous donations from local businesses and residents to help cover the costs of National Night Out vendors and Christmas gifts

for children attending the annual holiday celebration.

For the second consecutive year, the RCNW partnered with Mary Zellner and Mike Sobell of the Riverview Historical Society at its Summerfest booth.

Together, they promoted the Historical Society’s membership drive and accepted donations toward the purchase of a museum that would permanently display the many Riverview artifacts the organization had collected over the years.

This year’s National Night Out was proudly presented by title sponsor Actron Security Systems. The company’s generous sponsorship helped fund gifts for children attending the RCNW’s Christmas Caroling Party in December and provided every child who attended National Night Out with a gift card redeemable for a free ice cream at A Serendipity Cakery and

Ice Cream, located at 18100 Fort Street in Riverview. Actron Security Systems representative Frank Zdankiewicz also showcased the company’s mobile security camera trailer and spoke with attendees interested in renting the unit for special events and security needs.

Will Evans of Go Big MultiMedia also made a generous contribution that enabled the organization to provide ice-cold bottled water and candy to families throughout the evening.

The 2026 event marked the organization’s twelfth National Night Out celebration since the tradition began in 2014. The first four events were held at Forest Elementary School while the organization was known as the Riverview Forest Neighborhood Watch.

As interest grew beyond the Forest subdivision, residents from other neighborhoods expressed a desire to participate. In 2018, the organization expanded its mission to serve the entire City of Riverview and officially changed its name to the Riverview Community Neighborhood Watch.

Since its founding in 2014, the RCNW has focused on three primary goals: reducing home and vehicle break-ins, preventing vandalism, and making the community a safer place for all residents. Through partnerships with the Riverview Police Department, community volunteers, local businesses, and civic organizations, the RCNW continues to strengthen neighborhood connections while promoting crime prevention and community engagement throughout Riverview.

2026 MI State Primary Results With few contested races on the ballot, Riverview voters largely confirmed candidates who had already secured their party nominations for several state and federal offices during this year’s primary election.

Three races featured no opposition in either party and will move on to November. These races were Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell and Republican Heather Smiley; the 4th State Senate District, incumbent Democrat Darrin Camilleri and Republican Marcie Grzywacz, and in the 27th State House District, Democrat Jaime Churches and incumbent Republican Rylee Linting.

The primary’s contested races included the Democratic and Republican nominations for governor, the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, and the Democratic primary for Wayne County Executive.

In the race for governor, Michigan voters selected Jocelyn Benson as the Democratic nominee. Statewide, Benson received 1,246,854 votes, earning 83.2% of the Democratic vote. On the Republican side, John James secured his party’s nomination with 466,215 votes, or 50.1%.

Riverview voters closely mirrored the statewide results. Benson received 1,573 votes, capturing 86.57% of the Democratic vote in the city, while James earned

543 votes, or 47.59%, in the Republican primary. Benson and James will now face off in the November general election.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Republican Mike Rogers was unopposed for his party’s nomination and advanced to the November ballot. On the Democratic side, Abdul El-Sayed won the statewide primary with 743,455 votes, or 48.5%.

Riverview voters, however, favored Haley Stevens, who carried the city with 1,071 votes, representing 58.02% of the local Democratic vote.

For Wayne County Executive, incumbent Warren Evans easily secured the Democratic nomination, receiving 221,375 votes countywide for 87.55% of the vote. Riverview voters delivered a similar result, giving Evans 1,291 votes, or 82.54% of the local total.

Voters also approved the Wayne County Public Transportation Millage. Countywide, the proposal passed with 230,977 votes in favor, representing 67.03% of the vote. Riverview voters also supported the measure, approving it with 1,663 votes, or 60.78%.

With the primary now complete, voters have finalized the candidates who will appear on the November general election ballot, where several key offices will be decided.

Riverview Farmers Market is a community hit this summer

The Riverview Farmers Market is underway at Young Patriots Park, bringing together local vendors and community members each week.

Visitors enjoyed browsing a variety of handmade items, including bracelets, rings and pet beds, along with an assortment of fresh baked goods. The market continues to provide a welcoming space for residents to shop local and support small businesses.

The market opens at 2 p.m., featuring live entertainment from local artists and community groups throughout the day before closing at 7:30 p.m.

Shoppers and visitors had the opportunity to walk along Riverview’s beloved pond and try food and drinks from a variety of local food trucks that were present. A favorite among guests included coffee

and doughnuts.

Small batch honey, charms, and pierogies were among the tents that arrived early, with more setting up later in the day as the summer heat calmed down.

Attendees with children also opted to visit the Riverview Public Library nearby for a scavenger hunt and take a break from the heat outside. Kids could enjoy bounce houses behind vendor tents as parents and family shopped and awed at the talented crafters.

Some vendors brought the cozy experience of home-baked goods, while others brought a more fantasy feel with handmade flower crowns and beaded jewelry. Examples of some of the pieces available included sterling silver vintage rings and colorful wire anklets.

Crystals and palm stones were in no short supply as well. Vendors discussed the stones natural healing

properties and overall aesthetic appeal when placed in necklaces or used as décor.

Typical park activities were seen during the market as well. Fishermen were casting their rods in the pond for bluegill, while others went on daily strolls or jogs around the vendors. The market serves to brighten the City of Riverview’s everyday activities by gathering fun opportunities in a convenient location for all to enjoy.

While the event is a newer tradition for the city, it is quickly becoming an intriguing favorite among residents who are looking to support small businesses, local crafters and independent producers. The Riverview Farmers Market goes on through September and provides a place for families and friends to gather for an afternoon of entertainment, with featured events taking place throughout the day in the park.

Small fragments eventually become microplastics and nanoplastics in water, soil, air, wildlife, food systems, and human bodies. We’re never going to get rid of all of it, but we can take one important step before we purchase any plastic or bring more of it into our homes. The simple solution is to check the number imprinted on the bottom. This is the SPI number, the Society of the Plastics Industry identification code. There are seven but not all seven are recyclable, and the numbers refer to the chemical composition of the plastic: 1) Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) 2) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 3) Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) 4) Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) 5) Polypropylene (PP) 6) Polystyrene (PS) 7) Miscellaneous Plastics Numbers 1 and 2 can be recycled wherever recycling is accepted, the rest have issues. According to www. generalkinematics.com: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) is the most commonly used plastic for beverage bottles, food containers, and packaging. It is widely recycled and can be turned into a variety of products, such as clothing (polar fleece), carpets, and new plastic bottles. However, PET can absorb odors and chemicals from the items it holds, and high heat exposure may cause harmful chemicals to leach into the contents - this is why you never buy bottled water sitting out in the sun). PET is easily accepted at most recycling plants and can be recycled indefinitely into new bottles, clothing, and even construction materials.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used in milk jugs, cleaning bottles, and yogurt containers. It is the most commonly recycled plastic, known for its strength and durability. It is deemed safe for food contact and is one of the safest plastics for both people and the environment. HDPE does not leach chemicals into food or beverages, making it ideal for everyday products.

HDPE is widely accepted at recycling centers, with its recycled form used in products like plastic lumber, park benches, and piping.

The next series of numbers can occasionally be recycled, but each has its difficulties. It’s probably best to avoid taking possession in the first place.

3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is often used in plastic bags, plastic wraps, and squeezable bottles.

It has a simple structure, making it easy to produce, but hard to recycle.

LDPE is considered a safe plastic, but it tends to tangle in recycling machinery, which can disrupt the recycling process. Some recycling programs accept LDPE, but it remains difficult to process. When recycled, it can be made into garbage can liners, bubble wrap, and furniture.

4. Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) is often used in pipes, flooring, and medical equipment. It’s one of the oldest plastics, but it contains harmful chemicals that make it challenging to recycle. PVC can be flexible or rigid, depending on the additives used. It’s typically found in products like plumbing pipes, credit cards, and food wraps. PVC is difficult to recycle and is rarely accepted in curbside collection programs. When recycled, it is typically used in flooring, paneling, and roadside gutters.

5. Polypropylene (PP) is known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures. It’s used in a variety of household items such as Tupperware, yogurt containers, and car parts.

Although polypropylene is safe for food contact, it’s not widely recycled due to the expense and complexity involved in processing it. While polypropylene can be recycled, it is often discarded due to the cost and complexity of recycling. When recycled, PP is transformed into heavy-duty products like pallets, ice scrapers, and automotive parts.

The last in the series, 6 and 7, are in the ‘best to avoid’ category: 6. Polystyrene (PS), commonly known as Styrofoam, is used in products like disposable cups, packing peanuts, and insulation.

While it is cheap and easy to produce, it’s notorious for leaching harmful chemicals, especially when heated. It is also difficult to recycle due to its light and fragile nature.

PS is rarely accepted in recycling programs and is often sent to landfills.

When it is recycled, it is typically turned into insulation, school supplies, and license plate frames.

7. Miscellaneous Plastics (Other) Plastics marked with the number 7, such as polycarbonate, nylon, and other mixed materials, are grouped into the “Other” category. These

plastics often contain bisphenol A (BPA), which has raised health concerns. They are typically found in items like sunglasses, computer casings, and baby bottles(!!).

Miscellaneous plastics are the hardest to recycle and are rarely accepted by recycling plants. When they are processed, they are turned into plastic lumber and specialized construction materials.

Your best plan of action is to check with your City DPW to find out about the recycling process they use. More information may be obtained at the City of Riverview’s Land Preserve that has a recycling program: www. cityofriverview.com/departments/ land_preserve/waste_recycling.php.

We can’t keep dumping plastic in landfills as it takes too many years to degrade, so the best option is not to accept it in the first place. Bring your cloth shopping bags to the store with you, bring your Mason jars (get them weighed first!), if you already have lunch bags, even those will work.

If we don’t reduce our footprint, we’re going to get buried in plastic.

Hopefully, the science will evolve where everything can be recycled properly but in the meantime, we can do our part to help reduce.
