24th Simsonian 5K Turns Challenges Into Gold By BILL STEVENSON Just like the ancient alchemist who turned lead into gold, the 24th annual Simsonian 5K Kick-Off Classic held August 15 overcame great challenges and transformed into one of the best races ever! Judging by the excitement of more than 200 happy runners and walkers, the Sims Run has become a Grosse Ile summer’s end tradition worth its weight in gold. But, this year, it wasn’t without challenges. First, our longtime DJ and sound guy couldn’t make the race—had a wedding out of town. Next, Grosse Ile High School and Middle School were under major construction, limiting building access if necessary. And, of course, Grays Drive was torn up and had major paving issues—all within one hundred yards of our traditional start. The safety and well-being of our runners always a paramount concern. Lead, no gold. Since its inception, the Simsonian SEE GOLD, PAGE 12

GIHS Marching Band Takes on Band Camp at BGSU

As the final weeks before marching onto the field approached, the Grosse Ile High School Marching Band headed to Bowling Green State University for five days of hard work, learning, and plenty of fun at band camp. The camp gave the students an opportunity to learn their marching sets, music, and choreography while preparing their 2026 show for the upcoming season. From early rehearsals to long days on the field, the band members worked together to build the foundation for what audiences would soon see under the Friday night lights.

While the week was filled with plenty of practice, the students also enjoyed several themed days that brought some extra fun and school spirit to camp. Twin Day had students pairing up in matching outfits or things, Beach Day brought a little summer fun to the week, and USA Day gave the band a chance to show their patriotic spirit. After five busy days at BGSU, the band returned home to Grosse Ile with plenty to celebrate. The students had worked hard, made progress, and were excited to share their show with the community. The band expressed its appreciation to the students

for their dedication and positive attitude throughout the week. Special thanks also went to Ms. Berner and Mr. Riffe for putting together the season’s show and guiding the students through the process, and nurse Rachelle Francis for taking care of the students and helping keep everyone healthy during camp. The section instructors were recognized for the countless hours they spent working with the students and helping them improve their time at camp. The band also thanked all of the chaperones who gave their time and energy to support the students during the week.

New Sign Installed at Stevenson Family Preserve

The Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy’s Monday Morning Stewardship Crew recently installed a new sign at the newly acquired Leo G. Stevenson Family Preserve. The wooded property will be protected from future development and maintained in its natural state

through the Conservancy’s Protect Usage Concept. The preserve will be monitored annually, with stewardship efforts focused on controlling invasive species and supporting healthy wildlife habitat. For the Conservancy’s volunteer crew, caring for Grosse Ile’s natural areas provides an opportunity

to make a lasting difference in the community. The group continues to welcome residents interested in helping protect and improve local preserves. Those interested in volunteering can learn more through the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy’s volunteer program at ginlc.org/volunteer.

Grosse Ile Teen Works to Create a Safer Waterfront Have you ever looked over the edge at the Detroit River overlook in front of St. James Episcopal Church and wondered how the area could be made safer? Boy Scout and St. James member Gavin Mahon did more than notice the concern—he made it the focus of his Eagle Scout project.

Mahon chose the area around two waterfront benches across from St. James on East River. The benches offered a beautiful place for community members to sit and enjoy the view, but a steep and potentially dangerous slope directly in front of them created a safety concern for those using the area. Mahon first noticed the slope while he was at church. He recognized that elderly and disabled individuals, along with other community members, used the benches to enjoy the waterfront. He wanted his Eagle Scout project to make the area safer while also improving its appearance. His plan included installing a line of posts in front of each bench and con-

structing a retaining wall. Soil would then be added to help level the ground and create a more stable and secure area around the benches. The completed project would provide a safer and more welcoming space for visitors while maintaining the scenic view of the Detroit River. To help make the project possible, Mahon launched a fundraising effort to cover the cost of materials and equipment. Donations were needed for items including concrete, lumber for the retaining wall and auger rentals. All funds raised would be transferred to the project’s beneficiary, St. James Episcopal Church. The Eagle Scout project represented an opportunity for Mahon to give back to both St. James and the broader Grosse Ile community. By addressing a safety concern at a well-used waterfront location, his project aimed to create a lasting improvement for visitors of all ages and abilities. Community members could support Mahon’s effort through a donation or by sharing information about the fundraiser. Every contribution helped provide the materials and equipment needed to turn his vision into reality. What began with Mahon simply noticing a steep slope became a project focused on safety, accessibility, and community pride. Once completed, the improved waterfront benches will give residents and visitors a safer place to sit, relax and enjoy one of Grosse Ile’s beautiful river views.

GOLD

Continued from COVER 5K always had the motto and resolve, “That’s the Spirit that Made America. So, we fired up the alchemist’s cauldron. Working with Township officials and the Grosse Ile Police, we were able to change the race route, starting on Macomb and recalibrated the distance mile marks. GIHS music director, Elise Berner led the Red Devil Band ensemble with the national anthem, and the school fight song. Runners were off on a new course, and still finished to cheering crowds and fired up music blasting in Red Devil stadium. Slowly, the fire burned. Then quickly the gold emerged: Tim Najar of Ann Arbor was the overall champion with a blistering time of 15:51. The female gold medalist was Erika Van Loton of Garden City with a stellar performance of 19:01 Both bested a field of runners of all age groups from southeastern Michigan. The Simsonian 5K, which began in 2003, has been held in honor of beloved teacher and coach, Steve Sims who died unexpectedly of a dissecting aortic aneurysm at age 47. Sims was the winningest coach in Grosse Ile history in both girls’ basketball and girls’ track & field. Moreover, he touched thousands of lives as a teacher who helped build strong, independent young women and men. Upon his death, the Family and Friends of Sims established a scholarship in his name that is now an established endowment administered by the non-profit Grosse Ile Educational Foundation. All proceeds of the run go to support the scholarship given to an outstanding male and female scholar/athlete. This year’s GIEF Steve Sims Leadership recipients were Michael Nappa and Aurelia Miles. More gold. And when the final runners, um... walkers-- former Grosse Ile athletes Kate Tobin and Jazzy Teen pushing their babies in strollers, crossed the finish line... that was pure gold. Time to celebrate the Spirit that Made America for 250 years. DJs Jim Zang of Bass Note Productions and Josh Gray cranked up the tunes and kept party jumping throughout the day. The awards

ceremony starts with the Grosse Ile fight song, led by perennial state qualifying Red Devil Cheer team. In the 5K, the top three runners in eight different age groups received gold, silver, or bronze medals, as well as coveted Sims t-shirts. This year in honor of America and Grosse Ile’s 250th anniversary, patriotic cooling towels were part of the swag. The 24th annual Simsonian would not be possible without the continued support of our dedicated sponsors: Steve’s family, brother Bob (who flew

in from California) and sister Patty for their love and devotion, The Grosse Ile Educational Foundation, Mans Lumber/Home, the Southland Eye Clinic, Colonial Tool Group, Booker Family Dentistry, Susie Armiak Properties, and the Kobiljak, Lewis, Hanley, Bailey, Sullivan, and Reno Families. A big shout-out goes to Administrative Assistant and Cheer coach, Angela Raithel who handled problem after problem in making this year’s race such a great success. Huge

kudos to Township Supervisor Joe Porcerelli, Manager Derek Thiel, and GIPD’s Chief Todd Brozek, Lt. Eric Vazquez, and Officer Tyler Blackmon allowing the new Macomb start, and providing great road coverage for all our runners. Thanks also to the GI Recreation Department, Zaid Beeai, and Brian Payette for providing water stations throughout the race, and Scoutmaster Keith Lakotosh and Troop #1261 for thirst quenching aid. Race timing was quickly and efficiently handled by Brad Fairchild and Associates. Special thanks to the members of GIHS cross country, cheer team, girls’ basketball, and their followers for their participation and help throughout the event. Big shout out to Cross Country coaches Abby White and Jennifer Vesperman for their strong support. Also, year after year, cross country teams from other Downriver schools run the race as a tune-up for the upcoming season. Thanks to coaches and athletes from Monroe Jefferson (who haven’t missed a race in 24 years), Carlson, and Gabriel Richard for making this a pre-season priority. A big thank you goes to our GIEF board members: Kurt Kobiljak, Andrea O’Donnell, Dr. Michael Iverson, Sarah (and Steve) Ford, Kelly Papp, Joe Hrabnicky, Maggie Wojtkowiak, Victoria Gargasoulas (and Athan), Duncan Murdock, Michael Paisley, Paul Thrasher, and Susie Armiak for their continued support in all phases of the race. The Simsonian 5K would not be the event it is without the hard work and expertise of our running gurus— Retired Athletic Director Jim Okler, Racemaster and Starter Ray Geist, and Award Registrar Max Bailey. Of course, much of the credit for the success of the race goes to my dear wife, Andrea Stevenson, who handles much of the behind-the-scenes race prep and puts out fires the day of the race. And, she puts up with me all year long. This year’s slogan exemplifies what this race is all about—family, community, and legacy: “the Spirit That Made America.” Makes us proud to live in a hometown that values each. So, pass it on .... Come join us for the 25th anniversary Simsonian 5K Kick-Off Classic on August 21, 2027.

Red Devils Swim Makes Strong Showing at Quad The Grosse Ile girls swim and dive team turned in a strong performance at the Trenton Early Season Quad, competing against swimmers from Dearborn, Trenton, and Dundee. The Red Devils collected several top finishes throughout the meet, showcasing their depth in both swimming and diving events. Grosse Ile opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay, with the team finishing first in a time of 2:00.14. Individually, Olivia Miller turned in an impressive performance in the 200 freestyle, placing second with a time of 2:16.11. The Red Devils also dominated the top five in the 50 freestyle, with three Grosse Ile swimmers finishing consecutively. Maddie Booker placed third in 27.28, followed by Reese Wood in fourth at 27.46 and Lina Shihadeh in fifth at 27.93. Grosse Ile continued to shine in diving. CeCe Wilcox earned second place in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 144.70, while teammate Charlotte Vesperman followed closely behind in third with 142.55. The Red Devils also earned a victory in the 100 freestyle, where Ripley Booker took first place with a time of 1:01.01. With strong finishes across multiple events, Grosse Ile demonstrated earlyseason depth and competitiveness against a solid four-team field. This performance shows a solid team as they continue through the season.

Grosse Ile Soccer Rolls to 6-2 Start At the press deadline for the Grosse Ile Grand, the Grosse Ile boys soccer team is off to a strong 6-2 start to the season, showing steady improvement and plenty of early-season momentum. The Red Devils opened the season against Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, dropping their season opener 7-1. The team quickly bounced back, however, using its own Red Devil Invitational as an opportunity to get back on track. Grosse Ile won two of its three matches at the invitational, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Dearborn Fordson before putting together an impressive 5-0 shutout against Boyne City. The Red Devils carried that momentum into their next matches, grabbing a four-game winning streak. Grosse Ile defeated Detroit Aztec Eagles Academy 2-0, Monroe Jefferson 4-1, Riverview 3-0, and Carleton Airport 9-1. The team's early success is a product of preparation that began well before the regular season. Prior to the start of the season, the squad took a road trip to Oakland University for a summer soccer camp. The experience gave the players an opportunity to train together, build team chemistry, and enjoy some friendly competition while preparing for the challenges ahead. The Red Devils gave a special shout-out to Oakland University for hosting the team and providing the players with a memorable preseason experience.

And, in the long run, keep Grosse Ile clean. Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure. Saturday, October 3, 2026 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

DIVE BAR!

GROSSE ILE GRAND

AIRPORT INN 9264 GROH ROAD GROSSE ILE, MI

734-675-4200

ONE YEAR IN... AND WHAT A FLIGHT!

One year ago, we signed the papers on the Airport Inn. For Pat, it was a pretty full-circle moment. He worked here as a high school kid. We grew up here. We knew API was one of those places that had just always been part of Grosse Ile. So when the opportunity came to take it over, we knew we wanted to keep what made the Airport Inn the Airport Inn, while putting a little of ourselves and this community into its next chapter. What we didn’t fully understand was just how much this little place meant to you.We didn’t realize how many people were craving a place to just be. A comfortable neighborhood bar. A place to walk into and see somebody you know. To bring the family for dinner, grab a stool after work, celebrate something big or have absolutely no reason to be here at all and end up staying for longer than you planned! And yet, somehow, API has become all of those things. We’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and engagements with you. We’ve been the gathering place for teams, reunions, fundraisers and more. It’s a place to meet and a place to say goodbye. It’s a meeting spot for old friends, and a place to meet new ones. We’ve heard your API stories from 10, 20 and 30+ years ago, and watched new ones happen right in front of us. We’ve also watched the Airport come back into the Airport Inn. Pilots are flying onto the Island and making API part of the trip. Fly-ins are growing weekly and we love it. We’ve welcomed military crews after and during training days and of course our new friends from Selfridge. (We haven’t had a plane park in our parking lot yet..., but it has apparently happened in the 80’s, just ask Pat!). The Island community, the aviation community, the military community, our community...somehow they all keep finding their way to this same little bar. And we get to be part of it. People have thanked us for being here. But the truth is, we’re the ones who should be thanking you. You gave this place its heartbeat again. It’s comfortable. It’s good food and cold beer. It’s a high-end bourbon with a PBR on the side. It’s the pizza you’ve loved forever and the steak & cheese you’ve come to crave. It’s a glass of nice wine and an espresso martini “API style” with a basket of fries and API sauce (if you know you know!). And soon, it’ll be all of that out on the new patio, too. We’re still working. Still tweaking. Still dreaming up what’s next. There is a lot more on our flight plan. Because somewhere during this first year, we realized something: We may pay the bills here at the API, but it’s Grosse Ile’s bar. We’re just lucky enough to be its caretakers for this leg of the flight. To our API crew - you are hands down one of the best parts of this place. Thank you for keeping this plane in the air every day. And to Carol and Robb, thank you again for trusting us with the next chapter of something that already had a whole lot of history behind it. September 4 marks one year since we took over. October 17 marks one year since we officially opened for service. So we’re celebrating all the way through.Every Saturday through October 17, we’ll draw a wnner at 8 PM for API gift cards, merch and a few other surprises with a grand prize drawing on October 17. Want in? Cut out the entry form below, fill it out and bring it with you when you dine in at API.One year down. A whole lot of runway ahead. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making our first year one heck of a flight!

Now boarding: year 2.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, better known as the VFW, sponsors two annual essay contests for students in grades six through twelve. Both contests are built around the same theme: “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” VOICE OF DEMOCRACY The Voice of Democracy contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12. This is a national competition with four levels of judging: local post, district, state and national. The grand-prize national winner will receive a $35,000 scholarship, along with transportation to Washington, D.C. for the national finals. Monetary and other awards are also presented at each level of competition. To enter, students DAVID must submit an original DYER three- to five-minute audio essay based on the theme, “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” Entries must include a recorded threeto five-minute essay on an audio disc, with a five-second allowance at either end, the official entry form, and a neatly typed copy of the essay.

PATRIOT’S PEN The Patriot’s Pen contest is open to students in grades 6 through 8. The theme is the same: “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” The rules are similar to Voice of Democracy, with one major difference: the Patriot’s Pen essay is not recorded. Students must submit a neatly typed essay of 300 to 400 words. Prizes are awarded at each level of competition. The national firstplace winner will receive $5,000 in cash, and the state winner will receive transportation to Washington, D.C. HOW TO ENTER All Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen entries must be submitted to VFW Post 7310 by October 31. Because the post is not occupied every day, students should make sure their entries are delivered to the designated submission location. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to share their thoughts, experiences and appreciation for America's veterans. As the Chairman of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen, good luck to everyone, and good writing!

Big Goals Don’t Happen Overnight—They Happen Daily

Most of us have at least one big financial goal. Maybe it’s buying your first car, paying off debt, purchasing a home, building savings, helping your children prepare for the future, or feeling more confident about retirement. Big goals can be exciting. They can also feel overwhelming when we focus only on how far away the finish line seems. In his bestselling book Atomic Habits, author James Clear explores a simple idea: small actions, repeated consistently, can produce meaningful results over time. It’s an idea that applies particularly well to our financial lives. Look Beyond the Goal Consider a teenager who wants to buy their first car. The vehicle may be the goal, but reaching it begins long before they start shopping. Each paycheck provides an opportunity to save. Each purchase involves a decision about whether spending today is more important than what they’re working toward. Regularly paying attention to their account helps them understand where their money is actually going. None of those individual decisions will buy a car. Together, however, they can move that teenager closer to the goal while developing money-management skills that can last a lifetime. The same idea works whether you’re 16, 36 or 66. Someone hoping to purchase a home may consistently set aside money from each paycheck. Someone paying down debt may regularly put extra money toward a balance. Someone preparing for retirement may gradually increase contributions as their income grows.

The actions may seem small. Their power comes from repeating them. Ask a Different Question When pursuing a financial goal, we naturally ask: “What do I need to do to reach my goal?” Try asking another question: “What kind of person reaches this goal—and what would that person do today?” Someone who wants to build savings becomes someone who saves consistently. Someone who wants strong credit becomes someone who takes financial obligations seriously. Someone who wants greater control over their finances becomes someone who pays attention to their money before there’s a problem. Instead of relying on motivation to make one dramatic change, you’re developing behaviors that become part of how you manage money. Make the Next Good Decision Easier Look for ways to make good financial decisions easier to repeat. If you’re saving for something important, consider automatically directing part of each paycheck toward that

BIG

goal before you have an opportunity to spend it. If you’re tempted by an unplanned purchase, create a little friction. Give yourself a day to decide whether it’s worth taking money away from something you want more. And if you have a teenager earning their own money, give them opportunities to make real financial decisions while you’re still available to provide guidance. Learning to manage $50 or $100 today can provide valuable experience before they’re responsible for much larger decisions. The objective isn’t perfection. It’s making the next good decision easier. Small Habits Can Lead to Big Opportunities Financial progress rarely comes from one extraordinary decision. More often, it’s the result of ordinary decisions made consistently. Over time, those decisions can create opportunities. Savings can become a down payment on a first vehicle or home. Responsible borrowing and repayment can help build a strong credit history. Better spending decisions can create room for the things that matter most. Whatever your goal, don’t be discouraged because you can’t accomplish it today. Instead, ask yourself: What’s one small action I can begin repeating today that will move me in the right direction? At Downriver Community Federal Credit Union, we believe Big Goals Start Here—because the small habits you build today can help make tomorrow’s biggest accomplishments possible.

Your teen has big goals. Give them a place to start.

Riverview Students Gain Culinary Experience at Food and Wine Festival Over the summer, Emily Gross and Kaylee Morgenstern of Riverview Community High School and Ian Loos of Grosse Ile High School were invited to assist the culinary team at the Traverse City Food and Wine Festival from August 19 through August 23. The students gained firsthand experience in highend, large-volume catering while working alongside many award-winning Michigan chefs. They also had the opportunity to assist celebrity chefs Andrew Zimmern, Aarti Sequeira, Ruth Reichl, and Afrim Pristine. In addition to their culinary experience, the students attended a screening of Coldwater Kitchen and met several of the chefs featured in the film. The experience provided a unique opportunity to see the culinary industry from a professional perspective and learn what it took to work in a fast-paced, highlevel event environment. SEE PAGE 5
