Gala Event Held at Centennial Farm Celebrating 250 Years of Community Can’t say Grosse Ile doesn’t love its history! On Saturday, July 25, the Grosse Ile Historical Society and the Grosse Ile Recreation Commission sponsored a gala event at Centennial BILL STEVENSON Farm highlighting history, community, and family fun. And from the smiles on face-painted youngsters to the steady homage and resolve of veterans of past wars, the whole day was a huge success.

From a stage erected in the Centennial Farm commons area, Master of Ceremonies Dr. Patrick Mech kept the festivities moving and the crowd pleased with his blend of humor and serious announcements. The formal flag raising and Township semiquincentennial ceremony provided opportunities for solemn civic moments.

Hometown Stories Make It To The Silver Screen The independent film A Pair of Bridges held its grand premiere on July 9 at the VFW Hall, with an additional screening taking place July 10. The film was produced by Downriver Frames, directed

by Bailey Shaver, and shot and edited by Parker Watson.

Born and raised on Grosse Ile, Shaver developed a passion for filmmaking in middle school. After studying film at Western Michigan University, he graduated during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that temporarily pulled him away from filmmaking.

During those years, he directed several community theater productions with the Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center in Trenton while also working in the corporate world.

Shaver eventually returned to his artistic roots with A Pair of Bridges, an intimate cultural profile exploring the meaning of coming from a small town. Rather than serving as a traditional documentary about Grosse Ile, the film presents a collection of stories about small-town life, the people who shape those communities and the

lasting impact of having a place to call home, all set against the backdrop of the island.

The film follows six individuals representing different walks of life—an Indigenous woman, a teacher,

a nurse, a therapist, a realtor and a coach. Through their experiences, A Pair of Bridges examines how a sense of origin influences identity.

While centered on Grosse Ile, the film invites audiences everywhere to reflect on their

own hometowns and the ways those places continue to shape who they are.

The film is now available to stream for free on its YouTube channel, A Pair of Bridges.

Shaver co-founded Downriver Frames, an independent Michigan-based film production company, alongside Parker Watson and Betsy Bildner. The company’s mission is to help bring the film industry back to Michigan while creating intimate, whimsical stories driven by the voices and experiences

of people who call the state home.

Looking ahead, Shaver and Watson plan to collaborate on a supernatural comedy short film titled Auntie Hannah, followed by Sonnets from the High Top, an intimate poetryinspired web series.

Grosse Ile Welcomes History Home

By BILL STEVENSON In a grand ceremony befitting its historic significance, Grosse Ile Township and the Grosse Ile Historical Society hosted the return of the original 1776 treaty document to the Island in celebration of its semiquincentennial. The treaty, signed on July 6, 1776, by 18 chiefs of the Potawatomi nation deeded “Kitcheminishen” or Grand Island to British merchants, Alexander and William Macomb.

On that date, 250 years later, a large crowd gathered outside Township Hall to witness the historic return.

Members of the VFW honor guard began the ceremony with the raising of the American flag, accompanied by trumpeter Dr. Bud Uday playing “To the Colors.”

Afterward, there was a reading of Howard Schnauber’s original poem, “My Name is Old Glory,” followed by three volleys of rifle fire by the veteran squad.

The standing room only crowd then repaired to the Merle Solomon Board Room, where they prepared for the unveiling.

Supervisor Joseph Porcerelli greeted the crowd, “Our community has long recognized that honoring our past, strengthens our future, and today’s gathering is another wonderful example of that commitment. We are fortunate to have so many individuals, especially like yourselves being here who work and protect the history and make Grosse Ile such a special place.”

Historical Society President Karin Cozzi took the podium, “Thousands of years before Europeans came to this country, Native Americans lived on Grosse Ile. They called the island, “Kitche-minishen.” The Fox, Sauk, Kickapoo, Wyandot, Potawatomi, and others used the land for hunting, fishing, farming, and dwelling. On July 6, 1776 brothers Alexander and William were granted

ownership of Grosse Ile via a treaty or land deed. The treaty was signed by 18 Potawatomi chiefs with their individual totems in the middle of the deed, while the eldest son of each chief provided their thumb print down the side of the deed.”

Cozzi continued, “The solemn ceremony took place under the old council tree along East River which is currently near what we now call Gray’s Drive. And the old basswood tree became known as the treaty tree. [A stone monument to the signing event

under the tree was erected in 1906 by the Women’s Improvement Association of Grosse Ile after the original tree was lost.] It is important to remember that this document represents two very different perspectives on the same moment in history. Today, 250 years later, we recognize the significance of this treaty, while also acknowledging the native people whose history here reaches far beyond 1776.”

“And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. . .”

Historical society officers, Jeannie and Tony Krukowski pulled off the black coverlet and unveiled the vellum document from 1776. There were audible gasps and the crowd broke out into spontaneous applause.

Somehow in historic reverie, the words of Abraham Lincoln rang true, “The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearthstone, all over this broad land, will swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

One by one the crowd walked past the Grosse Ile Treaty of July 6, 1776. For the two following days, the revered document was on display in the Township Hall lobby, properly curated with a clearer translation by the Historical Society board.

After its display, the treaty was returned back to the Burton Historical Collection in the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. Next visit: perhaps before the tricentennial July 6, 2076.

2026 MI State Primary Results With few contested races on the ballot, Grosse Ile voters largely confirmed candidates who had already secured their party nominations for several state and federal offices during this year’s primary election.

Three races featured no opposition in either party and will move on to November.

These races were Michigan’s 6th Congressional District, Democratic U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell and Republican Heather Smiley; the 4th State Senate District, incumbent Democrat Darrin Camilleri and Republican Marcie Grzywacz, and in the 27th State House District, Democrat Jaime Churches and incumbent Republican Rylee Linting.

The primary’s contested races included the Democratic and Republican nominations for governor, the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, and the Democratic primary for Wayne County Executive.

In the race for governor, Michigan voters selected Jocelyn Benson as the Democratic nominee. Statewide, Benson received 1,246,854 votes, earning 83.2% of the Democratic vote. On the Republican side, John James narrowly secured his party’s nomination with 466,215 votes, or 50.1%.

Grosse Ile voters closely mirrored the statewide results. Benson received 1,797 votes, capturing 85.49% of the Democratic vote in the township, while James earned 1,015 votes, or 51.06%, in the Republican primary. Benson and James will now face off in the November general election.

In the race for U.S. Senate, Republican Mike Rogers was unopposed for his party’s nomination and advanced to the November ballot. On the Democratic side, Abdul El-Sayed won the statewide primary with 743,455 votes, or 48.5%. Grosse Ile Democrats, however, favored Haley Stevens, who carried the township with 1,103 votes, representing 51.18% of the local Democratic vote.

For Wayne County Executive, incumbent Warren Evans easily secured the Democratic nomination, receiving 221,375 votes countywide for 87.55% of the vote. Grosse Ile voters also supported Evans, giving him 1,329 votes, or 76.29% of the local total.

Unlike the countywide outcome, Grosse Ile voters rejected the Wayne County Public Transportation Millage. While the proposal passed across Wayne County with 230,977 votes, or 67.03%, township voters opposed the measure by a vote of 2,550, representing 60.93% of ballots cast on the question.

Grosse Ile voters also decided one local ballot proposal. The Grosse Ile Township Millage to Maintain Current Police Department Operations was approved with 2,313 votes, or 54.66%.

With the primary now complete, voters have finalized the candidates who will appear on the November general election ballot while also weighing in on important countywide and local funding proposals.

Rich Lauth and partner conquer 120-mile AuSable River Marathon

Grosse Ile’s own Rich Lauth made local history at the AuSable River Canoe Marathon, earning the title of Mixed Division Champion alongside partner Mary Schlimmer-Willoughby of Traverse City.

Competing as Canoe #89, Lauth and Schlimmer-Willoughby completed the legendary 120-mile nonstop race from Grayling to Oscoda in 15:12:37, finishing an impressive 11th overall among the entire field.

The race, held July 25-26, began in Grayling with teams taking off in a thrilling LeMans-style running start and continued nonstop through the night before concluding on July 26 along the shores of Lake Huron in Oscoda.

Know your plastics: What those numbers really mean

By SUSAN PINKOWSKI It’s everywhere and now studies have shown it’s even in your body!

Small fragments eventually become microplastics and nanoplastics in water, soil, air, wildlife, food systems, and human bodies. We’re never going to get rid of all of it, but we can take one important step before we purchase any plastic or bring more of it into our homes. The simple solution is to check the number imprinted on the bottom. This is the SPI number, the Society of the Plastics Industry identification code. There are seven but not all seven are recyclable, and the numbers refer to the chemical composition of the plastic: 1) Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) 2) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 3) Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) 4) Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) 5) Polypropylene (PP) 6) Polystyrene (PS) 7) Miscellaneous Plastics Numbers 1 and 2 can be recycled wherever recycling is accepted, the rest have issues. According to www. generalkinematics.com: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) is the most commonly used plastic for beverage bottles, food containers, and packaging. It is widely recycled and can be turned into a variety of products, such as clothing (polar fleece), carpets, and new plastic bottles. However, PET can absorb odors and chemicals from the items it holds, and high heat exposure may cause harmful chemicals to leach into the contents - this is why you never buy bottled water sitting out in the sun). PET is easily accepted at most recycling plants and can be recycled indefinitely into new bottles, clothing, and even construction materials.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used in milk jugs, cleaning bottles, and yogurt containers. It is the most commonly recycled plastic, known for its strength and durability. It is deemed safe for food contact and is one of the safest plastics for both people and the environment. HDPE does not leach chemicals into food or beverages, making it ideal for everyday products.

HDPE is widely accepted at recycling centers, with its recycled form used in products like plastic lumber, park benches, and piping.

The next series of numbers can occasionally be recycled, but each has its difficulties. It’s probably best to avoid taking possession in the first place.

3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is often used in plastic bags, plastic wraps, and squeezable bottles.

It has a simple structure, making it easy to produce, but hard to recycle.

LDPE is considered a safe plastic, but it tends to tangle in recycling machinery, which can disrupt the recycling process. Some recycling programs accept LDPE, but it remains difficult to process. When recycled, it can be made into garbage can liners, bubble wrap, and furniture.

4. Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) is often used in pipes, flooring, and medical equipment. It’s one of the oldest plastics, but it contains harmful chemicals that make it challenging to recycle. PVC can be flexible or rigid, depending on the additives used. It’s typically found in products like plumbing pipes, credit cards, and food wraps. PVC is difficult to recycle and is rarely accepted in curbside collection programs. When recycled, it is typically used in flooring, paneling, and roadside gutters.

5. Polypropylene (PP) is known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures. It’s used in a variety of household items such as Tupperware, yogurt containers, and car parts.

Although polypropylene is safe for food contact, it’s not widely recycled due to the expense and complexity involved in processing it. While polypropylene can be recycled, it is often discarded due to the cost and complexity of recycling. When recycled, PP is transformed into heavy-duty products like pallets, ice scrapers, and automotive parts.

The last in the series, 6 and 7, are in the ‘best to avoid’ category: 6. Polystyrene (PS), commonly known as Styrofoam, is used in products like disposable cups, packing peanuts, and insulation.

While it is cheap and easy to produce, it’s notorious for leaching harmful chemicals, especially when heated. It is also difficult to recycle due to its light and fragile nature.

PS is rarely accepted in recycling programs and is often sent to landfills.

When it is recycled, it is typically turned into insulation, school supplies, and license plate frames.

7. Miscellaneous Plastics (Other) Plastics marked with the number 7, such as polycarbonate, nylon, and other mixed materials, are grouped into the “Other” category. These

plastics often contain bisphenol A (BPA), which has raised health concerns. They are typically found in items like sunglasses, computer casings, and baby bottles(!!).

Miscellaneous plastics are the hardest to recycle and are rarely accepted by recycling plants. When they are processed, they are turned into plastic lumber and specialized construction materials.

Your best plan of action is to check with your City DPW to find out about the recycling process they use. More information may be obtained at the City of Riverview’s Land Preserve that has a recycling program: www. cityofriverview.com/departments/ land_preserve/waste_recycling.php.

We can’t keep dumping plastic in landfills as it takes too many years to degrade, so the best option is not to accept it in the first place. Bring your cloth shopping bags to the store with you, bring your Mason jars (get them weighed first!), if you already have lunch bags, even those will work.

If we don’t reduce our footprint, we’re going to get buried in plastic.

Hopefully, the science will evolve where everything can be recycled properly but in the meantime, we can do our part to help reduce.

Uniformed members of VFW Post 7319 laid a wreath for all Grosse Ile veterans who have gone before us.

Local musician and veteran Barry VanEngelen led the crowd in singing the national anthem and pledge of allegiance.

An invocation by Rev. Michelle James of the GI Presbyterian Church called for God’s continued blessings on Grosse Ile and its citizens.

Dignitaries present for the ceremony were Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, State Representative Rylee Linting, State Senator Darren Camilleri, Township officials Clerk Jamison Yaeger and Treasurer Kevin Flavin.

Congresswoman Dingell presented the Historical Society and Township with a framed tribute given on the floor of the United States House of Representatives and recorded in the Congressional Record, honoring

“this remarkable island community which has stood as a cornerstone of Michigan’s rich history, natural beauty, and enduring spirit since its founding in 1776.”

Rep. Linting and Senator Camilleri provided congratulatory remarks, with best wishes for another successful 250 years.

Historical Society President Karin Cozzi continued the celebration saying, “We have inherited a community with rich history, a generous volunteer spirit, and a strong sense of belonging. Our responsibility is to preserve what is meaningful, strengthen what brings us together, and leave future generations a community worthy of celebration.”

In keeping with the grand scale of the day, there was a ton of activity for people of all ages: Prizes for July 6th birthdays and longest residents of Grosse Ile by the Historical Society; Touch a Truck for kids of all ages— with thanks to GI DPS, U.S. Post Office, GIPD, GIFD, DTE, Priority Waste, Pro Excavating, and GI Schools Transportation; the Animal Shelter was open for tours with Julie Cortis; BoBo the Clown mingled amongst the crowd; there was a Bounce House, and Yolanda Brown had people Drumming Alive.

Music wafted over the fields with entertainment by Barry VanEngelen and Picks & Bows featuring Karen Skrocki and Bob Crzezkowski.

Event goers could wander amidst local organization’s booths and engage with a variety of community groups: Grosse Ile Herb Society, the Book Club of GI, the Alliance for the Arts, Historical Society, GINLC looking for butterflies and insects on a nature walk, Grosse Ile Bridge Company, GI Golf & Country Club, the Boar’s Head Festival, Trenton Public Library, and Stepping Stones child care.

Of course, food and refreshments were provided by the Knights of Columbus, Top Dog, Carmella’s and Tom’s Coffee.

For those seeking Chautauqua-type presentations, the Historical Society’s Tony Krukowski and Gary Kadau gave lectures on the History of Grosse Ile and Grosse Ile’s Railroad History.

Township Manager Derek Thiel gave an update on the upcoming construction project on the free bridge.

Erin Chapman and the Trenton Library conducted a book discussion on the work, 1776.

Film producer, Bailey Shaver talked about the making of his latest production, “A Pair of Bridges,” which had its debut showing earlier in the month to critical acclaim.

In another quadrant of the commons,

there were booths set up by a host of vendors that provided local color and creative artistry to the passers-by.

'Over 25,000 Years on Our Continent'

n Friday, July 10, a different perspective of the 250th anniversary of the deeding of Grosse Ile was presented at Westcroft Gardens and Farm. The “return to origins” commemoration, “Over 25,00 Years on Our Continent: A Celebration of Native American Contributions to our Region,” was a special community event held at Michigan’s oldest family-owned and operated farm, which, as part of Grosse Ile, was originally used by the Potawatomi people and other tribes for hunting, fishing, and gathering thousands of years before European settlement.

The program was jointly hosted by the eighth generation descendents of Alexander and William Macomb and the Downriver American Indian Alliance. Kyle Alexander de Beausset explains, “Many of you know I can trace my family history back eight generations to the brothers Alexander and William Macomb, who drafted a documents signed by Native Americans as they identified as Potawatomi on July 6, 1776. It’s through that deed that Grosse Ile traces its history back 250 years.”

“Even as a child, I remember marking that date didn’t tell the full story. Long before my family arrived, Native peoples lived, traveled, traded, hunted, fished, and cared for these lands and waters for thousands of years. Historical accounts identify at least six Native peoples with longstanding ties to this area—the Peoria, the Potawatomi, the Wyandot, the Fox, the Myaamia, and the Anishinaabek. This history isn’t measured in centuries, but in millennia, passing on important wisdom and experience to this day.

We brought together Native American leaders to help place our history within a much broader and deeper context.”

Grosse Ile resident and former Executive Director of American Indian Services, Fay Givens (Choctaw/ Cherokee) reflects, “There is a documented history of Native peoples

on Grosse Ile for 9000 years. It was a place where if you were going to the upper peninsula or if you were going to Saginaw Bay, you would come through here and it was like a stop where native peoples would stay a couple of days here to get rested before they moved on. It was always a transit place.”

“In 1776, the cultural differences between the natives and English made it very difficult for them to understand each other. The Native people thought they were signing an agreement so that everyone would live here together and get along. Natives had no concept of ownership of land. Ownership of land is like ownership of water or air. It belongs to everyone for the duration of your life.”

Givens went on to recount the history of Native removal in American history from the eastern half of the United States in the late 18th and 19th century. She spoke of more than 300 treaties that were broken over the course of that time into the 20th century.

A particular commanding moment of the program saw Native American Dance Troupe leader, Reg Pettibone (Ho-Chunk) describe the creation

story and the art of dance and music, beginning with the human leaving the Creator’s side after their inception.

The left foot represents the leaving, when the right foot was place on Mother Earth, “the human being was overjoyed. He continued to express thanks through dance. When we dance, it’s an expression of gratitude for food, clothing, shelter, medicine—life itself and living in harmony with nature.”

And with that telling, the Native quartet performed an authenic dance that was full of nobility, grace, and amity.

Wyandot of Anderdon descendent Denis Boismier, current city of Gibraltar Council member, greeted the crowd in his native Wendat or Huron native tongue. “The name ‘Wyandot,’ means ‘people of the peninsula.’ He recalled growing up Downriver, and over the course of his life, learning more of his Native American identity, and the proud history of the Wyandot peoples.

Boismier said, “Today we celebrate the people who first called this land home. We remember the struggles and tragedies they endured, and we honor their place and contributions to the shared story of America.” He

told the story of Adam Brown, for whom Brownstown is named. Brown was kidnapped in 1764 as a child in Virginia and raised by the Wyandot Nation.

He married a native woman, and became a prominent leader of the Deer Clan.

He further described in the 1830s through the late 1970s, how the Wyandot hid their Native heritage for fear that they would be removed to Oklahoma or their children taken from their homes and placed in Indian boarding schools to “remove the Indian.”

Mohawk speaker Christopher Bell, an elder in the Detroit area Indian community spoke of Pontiac’s Rebellion in 1763, after the British won the French and Indian War, and gained alleged control over much of North America. Pontiac sought to unite Native tribes around the Great Lakes to upstate New York to stop British American expansion westward.

With a huge budget deficit because of the war, and a vast colonial management problem, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763, which banned American colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains—the very land American colonists had fought to precisely to win.

Bell noted, “Historians argue that Pontiac’s war and the subsequent Proclamation was one of the first steps toward the American Revolution, and the events that led up to 1776.”

And that point, Mother Nature intervened with a fairly strong downpour, and pre-empted Dr. John Hartig and Kevin Harris Nattawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi’s discussion of efforts to restore Native American wild rice to the Detroit River.

Kyle de Beausset summed it up, “To me, honoring 250 years doesn’t mean simplifying things or pretending every decision made by our ancestors was just. It means being honest about the past, grateful for what has been passed down to us, and committed to learning what came before while building on the good.”

While it may be many months away, the planning had already begun a year in advance for the spectacular presentation of the Boar’s Head Festival.

The pageant, held every three years, is returning this coming December 10 through 13 at Sacred Heart Church, 21599 Parke Lane. And, word is that the 2026 iteration of the medieval festival will be bigger and better than ever!

Grosse Ile’s Boar’s Head Festival has been held since its BILL inception in 1980, launched by STEVENSON the late Josephine “Jo” Ramage with the Islanders theatre group, and sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Churches on the Island.

Open Book Theatre’s founder, award-winning Krista Schafer, is returning as the director of the gala event.

The grand Christmas pageant, which involves more than 300 volunteers, has become the premier celebration of community involvement, musical entertainment, and the Christmas spirit.

Such a large scale production not only involves local singers, actors, and performers, but people needed to work on set building, costumes, lighting, sound, publicity, and programs. Musicians include a combined adult, youth, and children’s choir of over 100 voices, and a 25-piece orchestra playing the original score since the first performance. So, it’s no wonder the planning has been going on for quite some time, and the call is now going out for volunteers.

Rev. Phillip Dinwiddie, Rector of St. James Episcopal Church explains, “It may have a strange name, but the Boar’s Head Festival is a medieval celebration of Christmas for the whole community.

We have incredible costumes and a full orchestra, plus space for up to 300 adults, children, and families.”

“The production begins in a castle with jugglers, a royal court, and even a knight who has been victorious over a boar. This becomes a metaphor for triumph over evil, as the children gather to hear the Christmas story read. Just as in the Nutcracker, all the characters come to life around them! So it ends with the manger scene, Mary and Joseph, with angels, as everyone joins in that triumph. It really is amazing!”

The Open House Sign-Up Event for joining the cast or crew, is Sunday, September 13, 2026 at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church 7925 Horsemill Road from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Auditions for

The other Interfaith Council pastors expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

nearly four years now, and one thing my people have come to know is that any chance I get to weave my undergrad studies in medieval, particularly English medieval, history into my pastoral work always brings me an extra bit of joy. With another year of the Boar's Head festival approaching, I look forward to the ways in which this medieval tradition, that reenacts the celebrations and joy of the Christmas season, provides a different way of experiencing the story of Christ's birth. It is also an event that brings together people from each of our congregations and beyond, uniting our wider community in countless ways. From planning teams, to set designers, to musicians, to performers, to make-up artists, and all who will come to watch the performances, this event is a wonderful opportunity that brings Grosse Ile and the wider Downriver Area together. I look forward to participating again this year, and hope to see many in our community participate in what ways they can!”

Rev. Michelle James, new pastor of the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church is anxious to see the Boar’s Head Festival, “I've only served the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church since mid-August of this last year, so I've only caught wind of the excitement and involvement of so many from the Island.

I'm looking forward with excitement to see it for myself this year, and for our people to be involved in this wonderful production that proclaims the birth of Jesus Christ!”

Father Marc Gawronski, said, “I’m proud that Sacred Heart continues to host this Island event and has been such an integral part of its history. I know this is an effort of our whole community, and whenever we come together for a common purpose, good things can happen. I truly hope the pageant will prepare our hearts for the joyful celebration of the coming of our Savior at Christmas.”

Safety Town brings hands-on learning to Flat Rock kids Flat Rock Parks and Recreation’s Safety Town program provided a fun and educational experience for local children again this year, with staff describing the event as a great success.

The program focused on introducing basic safety concepts through hands-on activities and interactive learning. Organizers noted that the children were highly engaged throughout the sessions, participating in lessons designed to build awareness and confidence in everyday safety situations. Staff also shared that the enthusiasm and curiosity of the group reflected the program’s impact, with many participants showing strong interest in public safety roles.

The Woodhaven Kiwanis Club recently hosted its annual shower benefiting the Child and Family Life Department at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, raising $13,900 in cash and gift cards to support programs that help children and families cope with the challenges of hospitalization.

The event, held at Woodhaven Upper Elementary School, drew more than 190 guests from throughout the community. Attendees enjoyed a meal provided by Secret Recipe Family Dining, participated in Hospital Bingo, and had the opportunity to win prizes through a basket raffle featuring more than 80 donated items.

According to shower chairperson Louisa Elsey, the annual event is held in loving memory of Maddie Pawelczyk, a Woodhaven-Brownstown School District student who lost her battle with cancer in 2013 at the age of 13.

Serving the community, one field day at a time The Trenton Fire Department helped wrap up the school year by participating in Anderson Elementary’s Field Day, giving students a fun and memorable way to celebrate the last days of school.

The event provided firefighters with the opportunity to connect with the community they proudly serve in a positive and engaging setting.

While much of their work involves responding to emergencies, occasions like Field Day allowed them to build relationships with children and families long before an emergency call is ever needed.

Many of the department’s firefighters are parents themselves, making the chance to spend time with students, watch them enjoy the day’s activities, and be part of their school memories especially meaningful. These community partnerships continue to help make Trenton a safer, stronger, and more connected place for everyone.

100 years of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hundreds of current and former caregivers, patients and community members gathered at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital on Thursday to mark a century of care with what many described as a homecoming.

The hospital’s Centennial Celebration, held exactly 100 years to the day after the dedication of Wyandotte General Hospital on June 25, 1926, blended history, community pride and a look ahead

— all in the same space where generations have come and gone.

“This place has always been about the community taking care of their friends,” said Denise BrooksWilliams, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Henry Ford Health, who previously served as president and CEO of the Wyandotte hospital from 2013 to 2018. “And that’s what it is.”

Brooks-Williams was among several speakers who reflected on both the hospital’s legacy and its role today as a cornerstone of Downriver care. For many in attendance, the event doubled as a reunion, bringing together former staff, retirees and patients who had long-standing ties to the hospital.

The celebration’s keynote moment came when Wyandotte Mayor Robert DeSana, joined by his uncle, former mayor Jim DeSana, presented hospital president Rand O’Leary with the Key to the City in recognition of the hospital’s century of service.

The elder DeSana, who was mayor when Henry Ford Health purchased the hospital from the city in 1988, praised the Detroit-based health system’s long-standing commitment to innovation.

“They’re a leader, they’re not a follower,” said DeSana, now 95, adding that he had a successful valve replacement at the system’s flagship hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. “And that’s what we need.”

New SRO Officer Ready to Take on the School Year Southgate Schools will welcome a familiar face this school year as Officer Chris Parsons steps into his new role as the district’s School Resource Officer (SRO), continuing the strong partnership between

Southgate Community Schools and the Southgate Police Department.

Parsons has served as a police officer since 2016, beginning his career with the Detroit Police Department before joining the Southgate Police Department, where he has spent the past eight and a half years. Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors, including two life-saving citations and, most recently, the Medal of Valor for his actions during the American House Senior Complex apartment fire that took place in 2025.

Outside of law enforcement, Parsons has remained deeply involved in the community through coaching. He has coached flag football for the past six years, basketball at the YMCA for two years, and the Southgate Vikings Junior Football Team for the past four years, helping lead the team to two city championships.

Parsons said he has always enjoyed working with young people and serving the community. As many of the students he has coached enter junior high and high school, he looks forward to continuing those relationships in the classroom and hallways.

He also expressed his respect for the work of former School Resource Officer Morgan Parrish, whose impact on students and the district helped define the role.

Camping Out at Young Patriots Park Families from across the community gathered at Young Patriots Park for Riverview Recreation Department’s second annual Family Campout, enjoying an evening filled with outdoor fun, games, and memorable activities.

The event featured family relay games, a community cookout, campfire activities, s’mores, live music, and a movie in the park, giving families the opportunity to spend a night “camping” together before cleanup at 10pm.

A special thank you went to Atria Kinghaven for providing hamburgers for the cookout, helping keep campers well-fed throughout the evening. Organizers also recognized Mr. Washburn for leading campfire songs while children enjoyed making s’mores around the bonfire.

The special event was coordinated by FlexWork Sports Management with the assistance of Steve Voss and the Trenton High School football program.

Throughout the day, the star running back and the FlexWork Sports coaching staff led campers through an exciting lineup of interactive drills, skill stations, and on-field activities designed to build football fundamentals while creating a fun and memorable experience.

Campers were grouped by age to ensure everyone could participate comfortably and develop their skills at an appropriate pace. The camp provided a unique opportunity for local youth to connect with a professional athlete, learn from experienced coaches, and enjoy a day centered on teamwork, sportsmanship, and the love of the game.

Montgomery’s presence left a lasting impression on both players and families in attendance. His energy, approachability, and willingness to engage with campers made the experience especially meaningful, with many noting how much the kids enjoyed the opportunity to learn directly from him.
