At its regular business meeting, held June 13, the Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Bill Stevenson Kyle de Beausset as Township Trustee to fill the vacancy of Mike Jurecki for the term ending November 20, 2024.

Mr. Jurecki resigned, effective May 10, citing personal reasons and a desire to move with his wife to a new house they are building in the Upper Peninsula.

Supervisor James Budny and the Board of Trustees posted the vacant position, accepting applications up to the end of May. The Board then held a special meeting on June 7 to review the applicants for the Trustee position.

After vetting the candidates, the Township Board agreed to interview six of the applicants over the course of two days. Mr. Copley withdrew from the possible interview, feeling his service to the Fire Department was more important to the Township, a position he would have to relinquish if chosen as a Trustee.

Bielecki, de Beausset, Heil, M. Mills, and Nelson were finally interviewed and given a ranking by the Board. When the rankings were tallied, Kyle de Beausset was chosen to fill the vacant position.

De Beausset is an eighth generation descendant of William and Alexander Macomb, who has been active in Grosse Ile civic affairs, serving on the Recreation Commission and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. He also is a moderator of Grosse Ile Now on social media.

Kyle is married to wife Jennifer and

has two sons.

After his swearing in ceremony, de Beausset took to the podium, and said, “I don’t know if folks will believe me, but I really didn’t expect to get this far. . . I put my name in fully expecting and wanting to do the work. I am really grateful and honestly humbled that you place your trust in appointing me.

“I have a lot of work to do. Gaining the trust of the employees that work really hard here. I know a lot of us take it for granted. I have work to do in gaining the trust of the public, so I really want to work on that.”

He went on to praise Mr. Nelson and Mr. Mills for their valuable yet unsung service “keeping us going through the difficult times,” and as great role models for community involvement.

Looking forward to the challenges ahead, de Beausett said, “I will try and be open to everyone.”

Jennifer and I have started a family here with two sons – one almost three, and another just recently born. I know a lot of what both she and I do is with an eye towards them and with the hope they’ll grow up in a community for all of us to be proud of.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my lifetime, and especially over the last few years, it’s that our way of life isn’t guaranteed. It’s going to take all of us finding ways to work together even just to make sure we’re able to keep basic public services we’ve become accustomed to maintained and funded into the future.

I don’t believe the Township Board and the township employees the Board oversees can do it alone either, but that it’s going to take good citizens willing to learn the issues and to learn how best to interact with the local, state, and federal agencies that affect them. I know it isn’t easy to interact with government, but I’ve seen time and time again how even a handful of people finding the best ways to do it can benefit people far beyond themselves.

There’s work to do on that and so much else, but the first order of business for me as a Trustee is to try Knowledge. Caring. Integrity ... ALWAYS.

Thanks to the support of a lot of you, its legacy continues as the oldest farm in Michigan owned and operated by the same family.

I bring national experience in finance, media, advocacy, and nonprofit management to the Township Board, but I’m probably the most accomplished in digital communications. I’m grateful to say I’ve been able to make a living for myself with both my hard digital skills in statistical analysis and programming, alongside my soft skills of being able to write and edit email, text, and social media copy that can reach millions of people across the country at a time. I hope to use all of that experience to serve the township as best as I can.

Here on Grosse Ile, I served as a member of the Recreation Commission for four years, as well as on the board of the Grosse Ile Historical Society and as a moderator for Grosse Ile Now. Folks might also know me for my advocacy to try and get the Wayne County bridge fixed, as well as for the cleanup of the former McLouth Steel site.

I’m also proud to say my wife Knowledge. Caring. Integrity ... ALWAYS.

It’s honestly hard for me to believe I’m writing this, but I’m Grosse Ile Township’s new Trustee!

I’m grateful for the trust the current Township Board showed by unanimously voting me in, and I know I’ve got a lot of work to do Kyle to earn the trust of deBeausset the residents of the Grosse Ile Township, as well Township Trustee as the employees and volunteers who work tirelessly to serve all of us.

A good way to start might be by introducing myself: I’m probably best known on Grosse Ile as an eighthgeneration islander, but I’m not sure how many people know that I was born and raised in Guatemala of parents from Michigan. My mother grew up in Livonia, and though my dad grew up all over the world, Grosse Ile was always his home base.

Growing up, and even into my adulthood, Grosse Ile is where I always visited for summers and holidays, so it has always felt like a home base to me, too.

When there was a chance eight years ago to move here full-time and help out my Aunt Denise with Westcroft Gardens I jumped at it.

I’m proud to say I was able to help find a way to shepherd it to the next generation and that Westcroft is now being run by my cousin Erica Jackson, another eighth-generation islander, along with her husband Clay.

and talk to and to learn from as many people as I can, and that includes anyone who might be reading this.

I’m also grateful to the publisher, editor, and writers that produce the Grand, as well as to the businesses that place ads in it. We’ve lost a lot of good local ways to stay informed and I’m grateful we still have this one.

Grosse Ile HS Principal Paul Syzmanski retires

At its May regular meeting of the Grosse Ile Board of Education, the trustees accepted the retirement resignation of GIHS Principal Paul Syzmanski, effective July 1.

Syzmanski served as principal of Grosse Ile High for the past six years.

Capping a career spanning 31 years, Mr. Syzmanski spent the bulk of his life in public education Bill Stevenson serving in the Eastpointe (formerly East Detroit) School District.

With bachelor and master’s degrees from Wayne State University, Syzmanski taught mathematics and later became the principal of East Detroit High School for fifteen years.

He also spent time in the central office as their district curriculum and assessment supervisor.

In a letter sent on the eve of graduation, thanking parents for their continued support over the past few years in helping to provide a

“somewhat ‘normal’ school year for students.

Syzmanski said: “As I reflect back on my career, it has been nothing short of amazing and fulfilling. I have been honored to work alongside a dedicated and committed staff who have always gone above and beyond for students. What stands out the most about working with GIHS students is their respect, incredible work-ethic, and sense of community. It brings me such comfort to know the future is in their hands.”

He said his greatest challenge while at GIHS was the on again, off again responses the district had to make during the COVID-19 shutdowns. He praised the efforts of the high school teaching staff, and his former assistant principal, MaryLou Jansen in putting schedules, strategies, and safety protocols in place, sometimes with one day’s notice.

“I am very proud of the work we did over the last several years in meeting the challenges we faced, but all the while maintaining the excellence of

fiscally responsible.

“We are also proud of fostering a culture where everyone was treated fairly and equally\ – that has been my focus since day one.”

While he has no immediate plans for the next chapter in his life, he is looking forward to spending time with his family and wife, Laura.

“Lastly, I want to extend my gratitude to the parents and community members who have supported our school over my tenure as principal and in particular to those who spent countless hours volunteering, donating to scholarships or simply reached out with words of encouragement and support. It truly has been a privilege and pleasure to serve the students and staff of Grosse Ile High School and to be surrounded by such an amazing educational community.

Educator Jaime Churches sets sights on working in government Fifth grade teacher Jaime Churches seemed the logical person to give my T-shirt that had the words across the front: “A woman’s place is in the house or the senate.”

In a crazy moment when I was a lot younger, I got inspired to run for the U.S. Congress I even got covered in the Detroit Free Press as “nickel- and diming- her way to the U.S. Senate.”

PAMELA A. Back then I didn’t have the money FRUCCI for a campaign or the signatures to get on the ballot. But I did run for a trustee for Grosse Ile Township and won that election!

Jaime has a much better chance of winning the election for Michigan’s House of Representatives.

Highly educated, she earned her masters in educational administration from Madonna University.

A graduate of GIHS in 2006, she moved with her family a lot in her youth since her father’s work took him around the country.

A Democrat, Jaime has been covering the Downriver area knocking on doors in Southgate, Riverview, Grosse Ile, and Trenton. Her concerns include making sure health care is readily available, improving education, stabilizing small business, and making sure our economy is solid.

She tells me she just can’t “sit on the side lines” and

that her decisions will be based on “What’s best for the people.”

Jo Woods is one of the faithful volunteers and she’s taken on the job of sorting and organizing a bin full of notes donated by Isabella Swan’s nephew.

Ms. Swan wrote the first 100 years of Grosse lle history in her book Deep Roots and she kept all her notes which were in the bin. Since Isabella Swan is considered our main historian, the Museum Committee decided it was important to save her notes.

Take time on a Sunday or Thursday to visit the historic museum and customs house When I was attending a Michigan Garden Club convention on Mackinac Island many years ago, I wrote down a quote from one of the speakers that made a lot of sense to me. She said “Preservation is progress.”

Historical Society which is preserving our history.

Island residents should make a commitment to visit the museum (open Thursday from 10-12 p.m. and Sundays form 1-4 p.m.) Currently, there is a colorful display giving the history of Westcroft Gardens, operated by the eighth generation of the founders of Grosse Ile. Kyle de Beausset, one of the eighth generation of the Macomb brothers, our founders, has now been appointed to the township board. It is worthy of note that a descendant of our founders is now one of our leaders.

Free concerts on the commons every sunday until Aug. 28 Thanks to the funding of the Sunday night Concerts on the Commons by the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts and a generous check from the Dick and Rosie Meyer family, every summer Sunday evening from 7-8 p.m. a different evening of music is offered to those who bring a blanket or lawn chair to the Commons.

The opening concert was June 26 with the Grosse Ile Quintet, a group of women playing wind instruments who gave a crowd of 70 an hour of enjoyable music.

Upcoming Sundays include a variety of performers including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s brass section, and a barbershop quartet.

CULINARY CAPERS Should you be asked or volunteer to contribute a salad for Evelyn a picnic, barbecue or Cairns other get-together, you might consider two recipes shared by Kathy Levilier of Hickory Island from her extensive recipe collection. The first was previously published in Culinary Capers in 2017 and 2019 and has become a favorite of many readers.

If you weren’t receiving this publication at that time, or haven’t made the salad lately, you will particularly enjoy it now that blueberries and cucumbers are in season. Kathy recreated the recipe, which she has updated, after discovering the salad during a visit to a New York City market. It is one of my personal favorites, too, and soooooo easy to make.

The islander also shares one of her newest recipes, for an awesome salad that starts with roasted garbanzo beans.

Your favorite lettuce can be substituted for the Belgian endive, she said.

Another salad recipe to consider is one I found while browsing the Taste of Home website recently: Texas Cowboy Caviar. According to the site, the “caviar” was created by Helen Corbitt around 1970 in Houston, using black-eyed peas because they resembled caviar.

extra-virgin olive oil ¼ teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 cups diced tomato 1½ cups diced, peeled cucumber ½ cup diced red bell pepper ½ cup diced yellow bell pepper ½ cup diced red onion ¼ cup fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 4 Belgian endive, leaves separated, or lettuce of choice 1 cup crumbled feta cheese

COPYCAT CUCUMBER BLUEBERRY SALAD 1 cucumber, peeled and cut into ¾-inch pieces ¾ cup blueberries ½ cup crumbled feta cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves or 1 teaspoon dried 2 tablespoons chives or chopped green onion tops 3 tablespoons salad oil 1 tablespoon vinegar 2 teaspoons honey or sugar or artificial sweetener Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Combine cucumber, blueberries, feta cheese, mint and green onion tops. Mix together oil, vinegar, honey, salt and pepper and add to cucumber mixture.

Chill and enjoy.

TEXAS COWBOY CAVIAR 2 cans black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained 1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained 1 medium green pepper, finely chopped 1 small red onion, finely chopped ½ cup fat-free Italian salad dressing 2 tablespoons lime juice ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 1 medium ripe avocado, peeled and cubed Tortilla chips In a large bowl, combine the blackeyed peas, tomatoes, green pepper and onion. In a small bowl, whisk the dressing, lime juice, salt and pepper.

Pour over the black-eyed-pea mixture and stir to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Stir in avocado just before serving. Serve with the tortilla chips.

MEDITERRANEAN CRUNCH SALAD 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained, rinsed and patted dry 3 tablespoons, plus 2 teaspoons

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spread chickpeas on rimmed baking sheet.

Drizzle with 2 teaspoons olive oil.

Season with ¼ teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper and toss to coat. Roast for 15 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Remove from oven and set aside.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine tomato, cucumber, bell peppers, onion, parsley and mint. Drizzle in the 3 tablespoons olive oil and vinegar. Gently stir with a wooden spoon to combine.

Line a serving platter with the endive leaves. Spoon vegetable mixture over and sprinkle with 3/4 cup of chickpeas and feta. Season with more salt and pepper. Cool and serve with remaining chickpeas on the side. Serves 4 to 6.

Safety Town comes back to Grosse Ile Safety Town returned to Grosse Ile after a four-year hiatus.

The Safety Town program was founded in 1937 by Officer Frend Boals of the Mansfield, Ohio police department after a child was struck and killed by a car on his way to school. Today, children worldwide are enrolled in this expanded program designed to teach children about safety in a fun and interactive learning environment.

This year, the four-day program was offered by the Grosse Ile High School Robotics Team as a community service

project.

In a child-sized mock Grosse Ile “village” the pre-kindergarten children learned how to evaluate safe from unsafe when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. Safety subject experts were sought from the community to share their insights.

The children toured the Police Station. They learned about a police officer’s job, tools, and vehicles of the police and animal control officers, and learned to dial “911” from the dispatchers.

Station. They learned about firemen and EMTs jobs, tools, vehicles and boats. They donned the fireman outfit and held the “jaws of life”.

The children toured the Post Office.

They learned about the job of a mail carrier, how mail and packages are sorted. They found their mail slot and they got to scan mail.

Safety Town could not have been possible without the help of so many. This was truly a community experience for the youngest of our citizens.

An enlightening conversation with John Hartig Susan Pinkowski

W

hen sitting down with a scientist for a serious discussion, you might think you were in for some boring statistics, ideas over your head, or information you don’t really care about.

However, if the scientist is Downriver’s own John Hartig, you are in for a treat!

There isn’t a more enthusiastic scientist in the area and he’s very excited about the future of Downriver.

Since he retired a few years ago from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after decades of working to improve our waterways, greenways and even brownfields, John is busier now than ever, dividing his time between the United States and Canada working on some major projects that are going to benefit all of us.

He is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Windsor’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research where he is evaluating the effects of cleanup efforts on the most polluted areas of the Great Lakes (https:// www.sciencedirect.com/science/ article/pii/S0380133020300824), including the Detroit River and he’s also working with partners to assess ecosystem health of the Detroit River and western Lake Erie by compiling and interpreting long-term trend data on key indicators like bald eagles, wetlands, lake sturgeon, climate change, contaminated sediments, invasive species, and more (https:// scholar.uwindsor.ca/softs/9/).

Stateside, he’s the chair of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s Great Lakes Way Advisory Committee and is also on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

He’s basically the scientist who can explain everything to the policy makers so the right policies, that affect all of us, can be put into place.

He’s written numerous books which have received three literary awards and he’s also received over 17 scientific and service awards recognizing the dedicated work he has done studying the cleanup and restoration of the most polluted areas of the Great Lakes.

But what has John so enthused now is that all the pieces are coming together which will improve our lives, connect us back to nature, and back to each other.

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is creating a Great Lakes Way (www.greatlakesway.org), an interconnected set of greenways and water trails or blueways that connects Port Huron to Toledo.

You eventually will be able to ride your bike, or even walk, the whole distance, if you are up to the challenge!

They are working with partners to put in more kayak/canoe launches to help reconnect people with our continentally-significant natural resources. They are also seeking a national trail designation to help put us on the map and bring in folks from around the country.

Their vision is that: “All residents and visitors of southeast Michigan are connected to and benefit from worldclass freshwater, wildlife, recreation, and heritage right in our backyard through a Great Lakes Way.” All 156 miles of the blueways are complete and accessible and eventually there will be 160 miles of greenways stretching from southern Lake Huron

through western Lake Erie.

This new trail will become more exciting in 2024 when it, along with Michigan’s longest statedesignated trail called the IronBell Trail (Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula to Belle Isle in Detroit), will be connected to the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail in Canada and the Trans Canada Trail (Pacific to Atlantic) are connected by a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian lane on the new Gordie Howe International Bridge.

A pressing problem that stands in the way of completing The Great Lakes Way is contaminated brownfields – abandoned or underused industrial or commercial properties where redevelopment is burdened with environmental contamination.

Currently, there’s the former Atofina site, the former McLouth Steel area, portions of U.S. Steel, BASF South Works, the Trenton Channel Power Plant, and the Eastman Chemical site.

Considerable cleanup and multiple logistics have to be worked out but imagine all of these areas being converted into multi-use areas that open up access to the Detroit River for everyone!

“The success of the Refuge Gateway in Trenton – the home of the

Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge – has shown what can be done with brownfields and how sustainable redevelopment can change the perception of Downriver,” John said.

Future uses of these brownfields could include parks and trails, high tech industry, light industrial, commercial, and some retail – the imagination runs wild with what could be! This will bring much needed revenue into the Downriver area.

The Detroit River has been a gem in the rough for a long time, and now is its time to shine.

John was instrumental in developing, along with Congressman John Dingell, the Downriver gem called the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, including Humbug Marsh and the Refuge Gateway.

If you have not been there, you need to visit.

There is a world-class fishing pier that extends 775 feet into the Detroit River. There are also three observation decks and spotting scopes where you can view waterfowl and the growing population of bald eagles.

Continued from page 22 protected waters or head out into the river. There are three miles of walking and bike trails.

There is a Gold LEED Certified visitor center, which has a large section devoted to hands-on and minds-on displays for children. Along Humbug Marsh there is a mechanical audio system that you hand-crank that can entertain children with information about their surroundings.

Outside the visitor center, there are two patios, picnic tables, and a playscape made of rocks, wood and rope – sort of a confidence course for children.

Pedro Hernandez and his wife, Liz (one of John’s three daughters), are frequent visitors to the International Wildlife Refuge and Humbug Marsh. They went to the center a couple of weeks ago and saw about 50 people fishing off the pier when the silver bass were running.

Pedro, originally from Spain, was pleased to see the diversity of people and cultures and how welcome they felt. He indicated that the center is amazing and has a small theater, a gift shop, and even an area to borrow a fishing pole and binoculars.

One of the trails goes right through wetlands so kids can get up close to native flora and fauna without harming it. There is even a somewhat secluded deck overlooking the river and pier with Adirondack chairs just waiting for visitors to sit and enjoy the view and activities on the pier.

While this is a great beginning, John further indicated that there is still a lot of contaminated sediment lurking below the river, and those areas were the subject of last month’s State of the Strait conference at U of M Dearborn that he helped

organize.

This conference, put on by the U.S. and Canada every two years, tackles an issue that needs attention. The 5.1 million cubic meters of contaminated sediment on the American side of the Detroit River was this year’s topic.

How does contaminated sediment affect us?

Hartig said that sediment contaminants accumulate first in plant and animal plankton, then invertebrates, small fish, and eventually large fish. These contaminants biomagnify or increase in

concentration as they move up the food web.

One result you’re probably familiar with are the health advisories on eating fish pulled from the river.

Once these sediments are remediated, the water will improve and there will be fewer advisories.

Currently, Hartig said the state and federal governments are sampling the sediment at the Monguagon Creek in Riverview by the Grosse Ile pay bridge to measure the size of the problem.

John stated that 65 percent of the cost of cleaning up these sites is provided by the federal government through the Great Lakes Legacy Act. The remaining 35 percent needs to come from nonfederal partners.

Another problem affecting the health of our water is the combined sanitary and storm sewers that are in certain communities Downriver.

When they overflow during and after large storms, the Detroit River becomes polluted with raw and partially treated sewage.

He suggests you avoid swimming in the Trenton Channel and the Detroit River after a major storm.

Swimming is generally safe at Belle Isle, Sugar Island, Celeron Island and Sterling State Park, according to John.

Good information to know as summer is finally here.

Since the river has been getting cleaned up, we’ve seen a return of beavers, peregrine falcons, osprey, river otters and eagles.

Underwater, there’s been an increasing return of lake sturgeon, lake whitefish and walleye.

The restoration projects are not done yet, so who knows what other animals will make a return appearance.

John won’t take credit for this, but he’s been a major part of it and for that, we all thank him.

Charity race keeps on running

Simsonian 5K: is an Island tradition Bill Stevenson Twenty years! The big 2-0. Hard to believe, but true. The one mile fun run/walk and 5K race that has become an island tradition has reached a new milestone.

The 20th annual Simsonian 5K Kick-Off Classic will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Grosse Ile High School.

And, like many things in life, the Simsonian has gone through changes over time, and still seeks to honor the spirit and legacy of beloved GIHS teacher and coach, Steve Sims who died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm in 2003.

Throughout its history, all proceeds from the race have gone to fund a scholarship given to an outstanding female scholar/athlete at Grosse Ile High School. More than $46,000 have been awarded to date.

This year, the Family and Friends of Sims have partnered with the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation to expand the scholarship to an outstanding male scholar/athlete. This year’s Steve Sims Leadership Scholarship winners are Camden Finazzo and Ashlyn Weatherly.

In keeping with the times, the race has become a hybrid variety.

Since COVID, if people cannot run in person, they have the option of making the 5K course their own – at their own place, their own pace, their own race. You simply register at @ runsignup.com, map out your 3.1 mile course, complete your race between Aug. 1-19, and send your results to runsignup.com.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve had virtual runners from New York, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, LA, and even Saudi Arabia.

For those who want to compete in person, the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Ray Geist-certified 5K Race at 9 a.m.

The Trenton and Downriver Soroptimists Club held its initiation ceremony recently at the Portofino Restaurant in Wyandotte. New president Ann Peraino began the proceedings with an invocation.

2020-2022 president, Abby Premoe, welcomed new members Rebecca McNally, Rose Cook, and Chanel Olson during the induction ceremony.

Abby also installed the following women to their new office positions: President Ann Peraino, President-elect Mary Pilon, Vice-president Tessa Smith, Secretary Kim Stoddart, Treasurer Chris Speedie, Assistant treasurer Cathy Infantado; as well as Directors Janelle Rose, Breanna LaPlante, and Jill Blackson.

Membership chairperson Linda Crisi presented a 10year membership milestone pin to Mary Pilon, 15-year pin to Lida Chapple, 25-year pin to Sharon Kelly, 30-year pins to Linda Crisi and Nancy Nagle and bestowed 40year membership milestone pins to Pat Gonyea and Chris Speedie.

Special recognition is given to a new member who starts off her membership by jumping into activities. The new “Rookie of the Year” is Cindy Gouth. The “Key Member of the Year” is Breanna LaPlante for taking on additional responsibilities.

Because she was going to be on a travel vacation, 2021 Soroptimist of the Year, Janelle Rose presented the 2022 Soroptimist of the Year, Tessa Smith, with her award at the June business meeting. Tessa’s dynamic personality and tenacity have served Soroptimists in every way, whether it’s diving headfirst into every fundraiser and service project, or volunteering for almost every activity. From the “Dream It, Be It” programs, “Mommy & Me Tea Party,” the children’s road rallies, “Hope in a Handbag,” “Battle for Freedom,” “Save the Girls” motorcycle rides and “Biker Nights,” master basket raffle creator, to the amazing return of over 22,000 bottles and cans during the Covid bottle drive, Tessa has always been smiling.

Members of Soroptimist International of Trenton and Downriver Area voted for the most deserving and remarkable woman.

Finally, last year’s Soroptimist of the Year winner, Janelle Rose, was presented with a plaque to commemorate her achievement.

The Trenton and Downriver Area Soroptimist organization meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Woodhaven Community Center, and the fourth Tuesday at Portofino’s of Wyandotte. All women are welcome to attend.

Track and field champions are on fire If you have been wondering where the smoke has been coming from in the last few months, one need not look further than the track and field arenas in the state of Michigan.

At the MHSAA Division 2 finals held at Forest Hills Eastern High School, proudly, four of our Red Devil tracksters Bill Stevenson set the fires and made their marks in historic fashion.

Leading the way, and becoming the state champion in women’s high jump was senior Natalie Christnagel.

Dominating a field of 20 qualifiers, Christnagel continued her high jumping prowess with a first place finish of 5-feet, 4-inches.

Last year, she placed third with a personal best jump of 5-6. En route to becoming state champ, Christnagel won back-to-back league championships, as well as this year’s regional. An all-around versatile athlete, she won four year varsity letters in track and field and swimming. Natalie Christnagel was a consistent all league performer in women’s basketball throughout her career, and was named MVP this past season.

Christnagel will start her collegiate career in the fall at Hope College, competing in both basketball and track and field.

The next Red Devil star at the state track meet was freshman phenom pole vaulter, Sam Vesperman.

What people should realize – the Huron League dropped both boys’ and girls’ pole vaulting in the late 80s due to the cost of additional safety padding and equipment. In those days, it was not unusual to see even experienced vaulters spinning around their pole axis like a helicopter propeller, as much of their training was on their own, or with limited coaching expertise.

So, that’s one of the obstacles young Sam had to overcome. Sam’s father, Jay Vesperman is the assistant

principal at Woodhaven High School, and provides much of the backstory: “Sam started pole vaulting when he was in 6th grade,” he said. “Due to Covid, Sam did not do any vaulting in 7th grade. Then in 8th grade Sam had a blast playing middle school baseball with his friends. Between baseball games Sam found time to vault and continued to get better. After his 8th grade year in the summer Sam was connected with the Inversion Vault Club. Sam made some major technical changes to his vault and cleared 13-9 before he even started high school.

“During this track season Sam was fortunate enough to be able to attend competitions that were not on the track schedule to get him valuable practice competitions with other great SEE FIRE, PAGE 31

“At his second meet of the track season Sam cleared 13-6 to break the 50-year-old pole vault record of 13-3 set by Jeffrey Nissley in 1972. At the Woodhaven Warrior classic track meet Sam cleared 14-1 to break the state record for highest vault ever done by a 9th grader in the state of Michigan.

“At the MHSAA division 2 state meet Sam had a great day. Out of the 24 pole vaulters, 21 were juniors and seniors and Sam was the only freshman that qualified.

“At the state meet, Vesperman cleared 14-4, finishing in third place. His 14-4 vault is even more remarkable, setting a new school record and a state record for the highest vault ever accomplished by a freshman athlete.”

With the bulk of his prep career ahead of him, Vesperman has his sights on the state record of 16-9.5 by Trevor Stephenson of East Kentwood in 2018.

The next All State honor went to sophomore standout Kaitlyn Molnar

Kaitlyn Molnar who finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 16-10.5 Molnar was second in the regional at Milan High School with a jump of 17-01, earning all region honors. In addition to her state accolades, she was also first team all league and won the coaches’ award this year. Molnar also has earned her two year varsity letter in swimming, and was all Huron League honorable mention.

Finally, senior Andie Fulmer capped

off a stellar running career with a 13th place finish in the mile with a personal best time and new school record of 5 minutes, 15 seconds.

Her performance broke the old school record set by Melinda Burkhardt in 1986 of 5:17.1.

Fulmer was the runner-up at the region with a time of 5:27.63, and has been a four year varsity letter winner in track, as well as two years all league, all area first team in cross country.

She also has been first team all league and all region, as well as the MVP in girls’ track for the past two years.

And, she is one of the valedictorians of the Class of 2022, attending the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor in the fall.

Kudos to veteran coaches Larry Swick and Jim Okler, as well as first-year coach Jim Frost for their successes this spring. The athletes, parents, fans, and entire community commend you for your good work in this championship season.

Just need to keep the Red Devils’ fires burning.

Honored Red Devils After their historic run to the state semifinals, the Grosse Ile baseball team naturally collected some pretty big postseason honors. Senior Ty Garza and Mike Madrigal were bth recognized by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association. Garza, the team’s shortstop, was named to the Division 2 allstate team. Madrigal, who was dominant at times on the mound for the Devils, was named to the second team. Garza also played in the MHSBCA East-West AllStar game.

History-making Devils reach MHSAA baseball ’Final Four’ The Grosse Ile baseball team had a great run through the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state tournament, winning district and regional championships and winning a state quarterfinal game.

But in the end, a team with red-hot bats put an end to the Red Devils historic trip through the postseason.

Heavy-hitting, high-scoring Grand Rapids Christian eliminated Grosse Ile from the state playoffs with a 9-1 win in a state semifinal game played on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Grand Rapids, which scored two runs in the third inning, never trailed in the game and the Eagles put the game away with seven runs in the

seventh inning.

Grand Rapids Christian broke through in the top of the third inning, scoring a pair of runs to grab a 2-0 lead. Remington led off the inning with a double, and then went to third when sophomore Jackson Isaacs reached second on a throwing error.

Remington then scored on an RBI single to center by Uchman, and Isaacs scored on a fielder’s choice groundout from Hedlund.

Grosse Ile responded in the fourth inning on an RBI single to center by senior William Lowery. Lowry’s hit knocked in junior Cannon Kawadri after Kawadri hit a one-out double to the gap in left-center.

But the sixth inning was decisive as

the Eagles scored seven runs on nine hits.

The first run came on an RBI triple by junior Josh Winkle, and then sophomore Cannon Paul scored Winkle with an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Senior Alec Koval and Uchman followed with two-run doubles, and Hedlund hit an RBI single, to make it 9-1 and cap the scoring.

Kawadri and senior Tyler Garza each had two hits for Grosse Ile, which finished 23-7.

The Eagles, who scored 58 runs in six games on their way to the state championship game, found their power cut off in the finals as they lost to Forest Hills Eastern 3-0 and

finished the year with a 27-9 record.

For Grosse Ile, the loss to the grand Rapids team put a halt to a magical playoff run. The Red Devils knocked off old nemesis Trenton to win a district title. The Trojans had eliminated the Red Devils from the state playoffs each of the past four years.

In the regionals, Grosse Ile clobbered Harper Woods 7-1 and then beat Huron League rival Milan 2-1 in eight innings to claim the regional title.

In the quarterfinals, the Devils rallied from a big deficit to beat Dearborn Divine Child 15-11.

It must have been pentup energy, or stars aligning in Red Devil houses. Or, hard work paying off.

Whatever the case, we need to bottle it up, box it, and Bill Stevenson save it to be passed on for future use.

This spring has seen some of the best athletic performances in recent Grosse Ile High School history.

First, let’s start with varsity baseball. There was no Cinderella season. The team, which posted a 12-2 record in the Huron League, good for second place, caught fire in the postseason, winning the district and regional crowns.

In the MHSAA State competition, they did what no Grosse Ile baseball team in “modern” history did – they advanced all the way to the state semi-finals, eventually losing to Grand Rapids Christian.

The Michigan High School Baseball Association named infielder Tyler Garza to their first team Division 2 All State Team, with pitcher Michael Madrigal, second team All State.

Boys’ Golf won their league, and were the runnersup in their regional, finishing fifth in the state.

Girls’ Track saw solid performances all year, with a second place finish in the Huron League and invitationals. At the state finals, Natalie Christnagel continued her outstanding performances winning the state championship with a first place jump of 5’4” Her teammate, Kaitlyn Molnar earned her All State recognition by finishing fifth in the long jump, with a leap of 16’-10.5” Freshman pole vaulter Sam Vesperman finished

third in the vault with a new school record of 14’4”. His performance set a new state record for the highest vault ever accomplished by a freshman in boys’ track and field. Ever.

Girls’ Soccer continued their historic achievements

with a record of 14-5-1, winning first place in both the league and district finals.

Girls’ Tennis won their league, and was second in the region.

At the Spring Sports Awards ceremony held on June 6, coaches announced

the following athletes as their Most Valuable Players for the 2021-2022 spring season: Girls’ Crew - Abigail Lauth; Boys’ Crew - Andrew Percha; Boys’ Track - Tyler Swick; Girls’ Track - Andrea Fulmer; Baseball - Tyler Garza and Michael Madrigal; Softball -

Wyandotte’s 61st Annual Street Art Fair is upon us, right in sync with me – Peter Rose – as I manufacture my 61st article for the Go Big Newspaper empire of Downriver.

Many merchants dread it. It is taxing, it is tiring. But it is also an event that reenergizes me every single summer, going back to the mid-70s. I work every hour of every fair, and am an Peter active participant.

Rose Last year the fair marked the emergence from being without such events for a long time.

Because it was still rather iffy, with Ann Arbor serving as a green light when they declared it was on, the Fair was very different.

The artists jumped on board, as did the traveling food trucks that make the Fair a fair. There was no beer area, nor heavily amped music. Wyandotte’s Social District was (and is) in effect, enabling the restaurants and bars to become the sole providers of alcohol.

Kudos to Heather Thiede-Champlin and her team for saving the day. It was awesome.

Their efforts resulted in a spectacular fair, arguably the best I have experienced over all these years.

People were so happy and relieved to be out and about. All four days were simply peaceful and vibrant, and people really wanted to buy stuff.

Artists were delighted by the absence of loud music and massive beer consumption, which resulted in more people enjoying the art and the show that felt less hectic, more bucolic.

For merchants like me who see 200,000 people come past our doors in four days, the Fair is Christmas in July.

Seriously, our Wyandotte stores have had the benefit of a massive surge in transactions in a month that was always difficult for our mall stores. I’m very grateful for it, and am probably the only person in the world that wishes it was a longer event. Every year, I hate to see it end.

I know, I know, I’m a lunatic.

There is a point here; I’m not just hyping the Street Art Fair. I’m calling attention to the fact that its makeup

is precisely what I advocate for, seemingly non-stop: The Wyandotte Street Art Fair is a stunning example of localism from near and far, concentrated in four days to create a Fair that is loved by so many.

Without really focusing on it as such, people support it because they love these artists and their passion, their talent, their independence as they travel around.

They do this in a town that is virtually all local and independent.

Remember that I advocate first and foremost for Wyandotte, as that’s where my businesses are.

Right behind that is the local and independent business community of the Downriver area. Then the state, and finally, small, and unique anywhere they are.

I have purchased so many things at past Wyandotte fairs, and many others that are absolutely unique. Would never find them anywhere else. And it is deeply satisfying to me that every time I have, I’ve helped that artist stay independent. I’ve “bought their chairs,” to steal a line from the movie Phenomenon, which has really stuck with me since I heard it so long ago.

Independence seems incredibly amped up any more to me, more important than ever.

More and more and more people

seek that authenticity, that passionate urgency that one cannot find in businesses funded by Wall Street and related forms of investment. There is no soul in places like that. They exist to satisfy shareholders and business plans that siphon money away from the communities they infest.

Love Wyandotte is the familiar name of the Wyandotte Independent Business Alliance, which exists to hype indie businesses in Wyandotte, to whatever extent we can. But we support Local everywhere, so we created Love Local.

That facebook page is where we say nice things about businesses that appreciate the support. If we get one more customer for a business, we are elated, but honestly, we are very selfish in this mission, in two ways: 1.) We do something to boost businesses we like and hope to be able to patronize in the future. 2.) It feels remarkably good to be nice, to be supportive, to be happy by doing this.

It gets really wearisome to read about people calling out businesses in public, with vengeance and hostility.

The amount of work that goes into operating any indie business is incredible, and it is, once again, the energy of a single passionate and resolute person that lives among us all.

Being mean is frankly intolerable.

We’ll never succeed in getting “those people” to keep their poison where no one can feel it, but we can do an enormous amount of good in counterbalancing the depressing effect such morons have on our psyches.

Over-tipping to a waiter that just got stiffed by a stingy or nonexistent tip just before you…..helps them stay or get happy. That’s one illustration of the rewarding vibe that happens when we all keep the idea of community alive, for businesses, residents, visitors…. everyone.

A happy, thriving business, among a whole beehive of happy, thriving businesses, is electric. The feeling that I, for one, get from that is hopefully extremely contagious through these ideas I share.

Be Local. Let the idea be just a representation of your commitment to be a real part of that vibe. We should all be striving to be the reason such places thrive. For so many, it is automatic – just not interested in shopping big. They do it for their own gratification.

If you’re not one of those people, you should find out more about what makes all those people heroes and angels and happy.
