Grosse Ile Yacht Club - the 86-yearold club located on the Southeastern tip of Grosse Ile - features one of the most scenic spots on the island. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the waterfront lifestyle.

The nearly century old club will hold a number of open houses this season, held in conjunction with it’s fun Summer Series.

The first open house will be June 18 and the club welcomes all non-members - islanders and mainlanders alike - to drop by and see what the club has to offer and if you don’t have a boat, we have social memberships available also.

At a special meeting held June 1, 2021, the Grosse Ile Township Board of Education announced that Valerie Orr, current superintendent of the Whiteford Agricultural School District is their choice to be the next superintendent of Grosse Ile schools. The Board unanimously voted to approve Ms Orr, with her first day on the job beginning July 1.

With the announced retirement of Superintendent Joanne Lelkatch, after six years leading the district, the Board of Education solicited the services of the Michigan Leadership Institute in conducting the superintendent search.

MLI Regional President John Silveri advised the Board throughout the detailed process, which began in March collecting stakeholder feedback from both external and internal publics to develop the candidate profile, the district/community profile, and the final

position announcement.

Based on qualifications and the candidate profile “in search of a visionary and inspirational leader,” the Board narrowed the search to six candidates who began interviews the week of May 10.

All interviews were live streamed and open to the public, who were given the opportunity to complete a survey

position were: Stephen Keskes, Assistant Superintendent of Clio Schools; Dr.James Konrad, Superintendent of Washington Public Schools in Pennsylvania; Paul Szymanski, current Principal of Grosse Ile High School; Shawn Shackleford, Central Middle School Principal, Port Huron Schools; Dr. Shauna Spickard, Milan Middle School Principal, Milan School District; and Valerie Orr, Superintendent of Whiteford Agricultural School District, Ottawa Lake, Michigan.

On May 17, the Board met in a televised meeting to further narrow the field to the best two candidates to lead the district. All board members identified Valerie Orr as a candidate to move forward to the second round of interviews. Board members could not come SEE ORR, Page 38

GIFD has bridge plan for emergencies

Late one recent evening, the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge was backed up and we were waiting on West Jefferson for our turn to cross the bridge.

My sister, who was driving, suddenly looked at Ute me and O’Connor asked what Township Clerk would happen if Photo by Brad Ziegler Photography just at that moment - an ambulance needed to cross to get to the mainland.

I knew that the Grosse Ile Fire Department has emergency protocols in place, but I didn’t know any specifics.

It also occurred to me that this was probably a common question and a concern for many in our community as we face several more months of the Wayne County Parkway bridge being closed.

To get the answers, I spoke to our Fire Chief Russell Bodrie.

He was very pleased to have

this opportunity to reach out to our community, as well as to highlight the excellent cooperation and helpful efforts GIFD has had from Paul Smoke and his team at the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge Company.

Chief Bodrie emphasized that the first thing we all need to remember is this: Pull Over To The Right ASAP when you see or hear the sirens of an ambulance or emergency vehicle.

My next question, of course, was what should we do if we are driving over one of the bridges where there are no shoulders?

His advice was clear: Keep going, do not stop, and once over the bridge, safely pull over at your first opportunity.

He noted that it is imperative that we keep driving because there is no room on either of the bridges for the ambulance to maneuver around stopped vehicles.

We should also know that our Grosse Ile dispatchers contact the Toll Bridge staff as soon as they know an ambulance

needs to cross, and the bridge company staff will engage their plans to handle the traffic flow to make the passage as smooth as possible.

And finally, I asked, what should we do if the bridge happens to be open for boat traffic when the ambulance needs to cross?

Chief Bodrie said that the best thing to do in this case is to stop in your lane on the bridge. The ambulance will drive in the opposite lane to move to the front of the line so it can be first to cross once the bridge is ready to receive traffic.

There are also a few things that all of us can do to be better prepared at home for the eventuality that an ambulance transport becomes necessary.

We should compile a “File of Life” and keep it in a handy space, like on the refrigerator door or near the entrance of our home.

The Grosse Ile Fire Department now has magnetized “File of Life” pouches that were donated by Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. Residents can

stop by at the Grosse Ile Public Safety Building and pick up a pouch from the dispatchers.

Chief Bodrie said that the pouch should contain at least 5-10 copies of several crucial documents. Multiple copies are important, he noted, because different entities may need to keep a copy. And our originals should always be kept in a safe place.

1. Copies of your driver’s license or other picture ID 2. Copies of your insurance card/s 3. Copies of a list of your current medications and their dosages 4. Copies of your medical history 5. Copies of a list of any allergies you have or you know about All of these documents are vitally important to have handy for the EMTs, and more especially if the resident is unconscious or unable to speak.

As we concluded our conversation, Chief Bodrie reminded me that emergency responders cannot predict everything that can happen.

School Board names new member BILL STEVENSON Grosse Ile Grand

At a special meeting of the Grosse Ile Township School Board, held on May 4, 2021, the Board announced the appointment of resident Amy Brown to fill the vacant Trustee position created by the resignation of Kelly Loeffler.

Loeffler was first elected to the Board in 2016, leading the field of four candidates.

Amy Brown will serve through Dec. 31, 2022, and may be up for election on Nov. 8, 2022. The winner of the November, 2022 election will be elected to a term of six years, beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

According to the Notice to Grosse Brown the school district, at least 18 years of Ile Citizens, the District sought age, a citizen of the United States, and applications for the vacant school a resident of the state of Michigan for board position “in accordance with at least 30 days.” the state’s Revised School Code, election laws, and Open Meetings Interviews were held on May 3, 2021 at a televised meeting.

Act, to be eligible, a person must be Superintendent Joanne Lelekatch a qualified school elector. This means announced that 13 people had applied, the applicant must be a registered and 11 interviewed for the open voter in the Grosse Ile Township Trustee position.

Hail the Class of 2021!

Graduates noted for resilience and resolve Bill Stevenson Grosse Ile Grand

This is the day they all have been waiting for. This is the day we all have been waiting for. Finally, we can return to some degree of “normalcy.” And we don’t mean turning back the clock to the Roaring 20’s. Roaring 2020 was enough.

No, after a year and a half of COVID, cancellations, and crazy fits and starts, the Grosse Ile High School Class of 2021 has finally made it.

Graduation.

Kicking off the long awaited celebration, the Student Council held a Senior Week from Sunday, May 23 to seniors’ last day of school, May 28.

On Sunday, graduates were able to chalk their parking spot, decorating their reserved space with their own personal flair.

Monday’s Spirit Day was College Decision Day showing their collegiate choice and pride.

Tuesday was Red Out! Day with appropriate school colors and later that evening a Senior Camp Out in the parking lot. Students were given the option of camping out or joining in an early Wednesday morning “Senior Sunrise” as a class.

Wednesday was Throwback Day where they could wear old school shirts - past Homecomings, 5th-grade camp or sports jerseys.

Switching it up on Thursday, seniors were asked to “Keep it Classy,” by dressing up readying for Senior Recognition Day this year held in the cafeteria to maintain social distancing.

Finally, Friday was the Seniors Last Day of School/Blackout Day complete with a water fight after school in the parking lot, capped off by a Senior Sunset moment that evening.

The whirlwind of excitement continued the following week, with the Class of 2021 holding its Prom on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Silver Shores Waterfront facility in Wyandotte.

Their class song is Time of Our Lives by Pitbull/Ne-Yo. Their class motto is very topical “Stay Positive, Test Negative.”

The class color is silver and the class flower is the red rose.

Their class advisors are Ms. Emily Lehmann-Teen and Mr. Todd Harp.

And, effective June 1, 2021, all outdoor capacity limits were lifted in the state of Michigan, allowing family, friends, and loved ones to attend the Class of 2021 Commence Exercise on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 7 p.m., outdoors on the Grosse Ile High School football field.

Graduation 2021 - the culmination of a partnership begun 13 years prior between the family, the school and the community, with the dividends paid in abundance.

Behind every graduate that walked across the stage is a story. A triumphant story of love, of thanks, of perseverance and of resilience and resolve.

And ... hope for the future.

“For the restaurant business, it was devastating,” he said. “It was really hard to accept the fact that someone else could make the decision (to close) for us. You’re used to being your own boss, and all of a sudden you’re not the boss.”

But the shutdown had a good side, too, in a way.

“I worked a lot of nights in the restaurant business,” Piunti said. “I realized that I really like being at home with my wife at night. That was nice. I don’t know if she liked it, but I liked it.”

Another impact of pandemic restrictions on Piunti is that he and the band haven’t been able to perform live – “a fun thing” that they miss, he said. These musicians have no real interest in doing virtual concerts, which lack the galvanizing joy and energy created by live music played in a room full of rock fans.

Nevertheless, Nick Piunti and The Complicated Men have a new album in the works, about half of which has been laid down in Jem’s Ann Arbor studio.

“I’d like to wait until we can actually perform live to release it,” Piunti said. “Maybe late this year. We’ll see how it goes.”

Meanwhile, between steady gigs working in the restaurant and writing and recording songs, he likes to play golf with his dad.

“Golf and music are two things you can do when you’re older and be pretty good at,” Piunti said. “Golf and rock ‘n’ roll – they kind of go good together. I’m glad that my passions are something you don’t have to be 25 to be good at.”

Local artist to show pin-up girls in ArtPrize 2021 Paula Neuman Grosse Ile Grand

Grosse Ile artist Mono D’Angelo will be exhibiting Twenty-First Century Pin-Ups, a collection of six of his pastel paintings, in this year’s Grand Rapids ArtPrize.

The competition is open to anyone 18 or older who signs up, pays a registration fee, fills out an entry profile and then finds a venue to display the artwork.

From Sept. 16 through Oct. 3, 120 businesses and outdoor spaces in downtown Grand Rapids will display the work of more than 1,000 artists. The annual event, which wasn’t held last year due to Covid restrictions, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and awards artists $450,000 in grants and prizes.

D’Angelo’s collection, a project two years in the making, revisits the mid-20thcentury genre of pin-up girls.

His paintings, never before displayed, will be on exhibit at Social House, a Grand Rapids pub and restaurant that invited him to show his work there.

Each painting is 22x28 inches and matted in a handmade custom frame.

“At the peak of its popularity, pin-up art could be seen on calendars, posters and advertising of all sorts,” D’Angelo said. “Some pin-ups even found their way onto the sides of WWII bombers, serving as good luck charms. I wanted to create a 21st--century version of the famed pin-up girls.”

His pin-up girls, all scantily clad, bosomy blondes, are posed with various sports gear.

Are the paintings demeaning to women?

“This artwork is colorful, bright, sexy and fun,” D’Angelo said. “I honestly believe the whimsical aspect of my paintings will be viewed as just the world we live in today. But should there be any controversy over the paintings, I wouldn’t necessarily view that as a bad thing. Controversy can create a buzz that would encourage more visitors to view the project.”

D’Angelo has been an artist all his life and his creativity finds many outlets besides painting, including woodworking; building furniture; restoring old boats, bikes and cars; and writing. He has written and self-

published several books of poetry and a book, “Powers of Fate: A Story of Love and Courage Born Amid the Ruins of War-Torn Italy,” about his family.

“I had heard the many stories of how my parents met during a war, but I never realized what traumatic events shaped their lives until I started

writing about them in my novel,” D’Angelo said. “I’d be in tears trying to translate those moments of just pure tragedy into a cohesive story. It was originally intended to be a collection of family stories and folklore documenting our roots.

But it grew into a 3 1/2-year journey that remains one of the most creative things I’ve ever done.”

He was a baby when his Italian mother, a dress designer before the war, brought him to the United States to join his American soldier father after World War II. “Shortly after my mother and I arrived in Detroit from Naples, Italy, we lived in a predominantly Italian neighborhood before settling in Taylor,” D’Angelo said.

“Veterans could purchase brand new, affordable homes there with help from the VA. I had two brothers and one sister.

My brothers and I all slept in a dormitory-like second floor while my sister got her own room.

‘Our small house was always loud and full of incredible cooking aromas from fabulous Italian dinners made from scratch by both my parents. If they only knew what went on in our dormitory. I still laugh about it.

“We did what all kids did.

We formed teams and would play sandlot sports. But even then, I was always drawing things. When girls became more interesting than playing baseball with the guys, I would make drawings of cartoon characters and give them to girls I liked. It always worked and I was very popular in school.”

he met Ingrid, his wife of more than 50 years. He studied life drawing and painting at the Center for Creative Studies, and – taking night classes – earned an associate’s degree from Henry Ford College while working as an automotive draftsman at Ford Motor Co. “After several years in drafting, I was promoted to design engineer. The design center was staffed by professional artists and craftsmen. At first, I was intimidated by the level of talent there and kept my artistic interests to myself.

It wasn’t until I entered an employee art show, where I won a first-place ribbon, that my secret was made public.

That stands as one of the highlights of all my artistic experiences. I made many friends there, some of whom I still remain in touch with.”

Inspiration for D’Angelo’s various artistic endeavors can come from anywhere at any time.

One unexpected creative spark came in May 2020, when he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

“After undergoing hormone therapy for 11 months, I’ve found it’s the treatment, not the disease, that slowly dismembers you bodily and

emotionally,” he wrote in the introduction to a journal the disease and treatment has inspired him to keep.

“As my treatments ramped up, I thought writing things down would be a useful way to keep track of my important medical milestones ... But the more I wrote, the more I realized how helpful my journal could be to other prostate cancer victims ... This book contains many of my most private thoughts.

They were never intended to be made public.”

His journal, a work in progress, is now more than 35,000 words. Despite its very private nature, D’Angelo is considering publishing it to help other cancer patients. And despite the sometimes devastating side effects of his cancer treatment, he remains active, playing tennis, boating and – of course – creating art.

He’s been inspired throughout his life by many people, and also by famous artists.

“Salvador Dali, the great surrealist, is my alltime favorite, but there were others like Frederick Remington, famed artist of the early Western frontier; Norman Rockwell, well-known for his Americana art; and I must include Alberto Vargas, the pin-up artist made famous by his work published in Playboy magazine,” D’Angelo said.

“My 20-year-old self would have never even attempted a challenging project such as my six (pinup) paintings. I believe my latest ArtPrize project to be one of the best works I’ve ever created. Over time, I think I have discovered what I am good at.”

CULINARY CAPERS In May, I was on a cake-mix baking binge. This month, it’s cookies. I’ve been celebrating National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, which is June 12, by baking dozens of one of my favorite indulgences.

To search for recipes, I headed to Georgia, which is the leading producer of peanuts in the United States, EVELYN followed by Alabama CAIRNS Grosse Ile and Florida. I found the Grand three-ingredient recipe that follows on the Georgia Peanut Association website, and have learned since that the popular cookie dates back to the 1910s, and the familiar fork design to the 1930s.

The Peanut Butter Blossom Cookie, an entry in the 1957 Pillsbury BakeOff Contest, became one of the most famous recipes ever entered in the contest and one of the most popular recipes in the United States, especially at Christmastime.

If you’re a chocoholic, you’ll go bananas over the recipe for Double Chocolate Peanut Cookies, and if you’re not a chocoholic, you will be after one bite of this awesome cookie. It includes peanut butter, cocoa, chocolate chips and peanuts. The cookies are large and chunky. If you try to make small cookies from the batter, you will be disappointed. I tried to, and I was.

3-INGREDIENT PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg Preheat oven to 350 degrees. With a spoon, thoroughly mix peanut butter, sugar and egg in a bowl. With a small cookie scoop, place scoops of dough onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Flatten the scoops with a fork to make the traditional peanut butter cookie criss-cross pattern. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Cool before removing from the cookie tray. Store in an air-tight container.

PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOM COOKIES ½ cup Crisco Butter Flavor shortening ½ cup creamy peanut butter ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg

2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Sugar 48 foil-wrapped milk chocolate Hershey kisses, unwrapped Heat oven to 375 degrees. Cream together shortening, peanut butter, brown sugar and ½ cup granulated sugar. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Beat well on low speed until stiff dough forms. Shape dough into 1-inch balls.

Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown. Top each cookie immediately with an unwrapped kiss, pressing down firmly so cookie cracks around edge of kiss. Remove from cookie sheet to cool.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE PEANUTY COOKIES 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup (4 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature ¾ cup creamy peanut butter 2/3 cup light brown sugar 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips ½ cup unsalted peanuts Coarse salt for sprinkling Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside. Beat butter, peanut butter and sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes, scraping bowl. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Add vanilla. Scrape bowl. Add dry ingredients on low, until just combined. With rubber spatula, stir in chocolate chips and peanuts.

Drop dough by 2 heaping tablespoons, spacing about 2 inches apart. Sprinkle with pinch of salt. Bake about 12 minutes or until outside of cookies are set but middles are a little soft. Cool on baking sheets. Makes about 16 to 20 cookies.

CRAWFORD CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY Who would have thought it would be a good idea to open a new business in the middle of the worldwide pandemic?

Who indeed?

But that’s what Grosse Ile’s Dr Christine Crawford did when she opened Crawford Chiropractic Clinic on Macomb Street in May of 2020.

The practice might have opened earlier. But when the Township offices closed down because of the pandemic, Dr. Crawford was unable to get a certificate of occupancy before May. In its first year - in spite of or because of the pandemic - the practice has been a booming success.

“It’s been fantastic,” said Dr. Crawford, who has been a chiropractor for 19 years, but an independent business woman for just one.

She said the people of Grosse Ile have been most welcoming.

“I live here, my kids go to school here and I am a bit of a social butterfly so I decided to open my business here. The response has been more than I expected,” Dr. Crawford said.

She added that while the closure of the free bridge has been a major headache for most Islanders, it has helped her business.

“Lots of people don’t want to leave the island now, and so many have switched chiropractors to avoid having to drive.”

Dr. Crawford’s business is at 7780 Macomb. She has worked hard to make it an inviting place.

“We did a lot of work on the building to make it feel like home,” she said.

“We really wanted it to feel like you are walking into my family room.”

When asking Dr. Crawford if you could benefit from chiropractic care, Dr. Crawford has the answer: “If you have a spine, I can help you,” she said.

Dr. Crawford said she specializes in maternity care, but has patients of all ages.

“We have a lot of families,” she said. “Dad may come in because he has a headache and I adjust mom and the kids, too.”

In the past, Dr. Crawford has worked as an independent contractor at other chiropractic offices and she taught health sciences at Baker College for six years before making the leap to running her own practice.

She said the freedom for a single mom has been liberating.

“Having the schedule flexibility that I have now has been just fantastic,” she said.

As an avid boater and the mother of a 14-year-old and 11-year-old twins, being free from the five-day, nine-to-five has allowed Dr. Crawford to lead a more balanced life.

You can find Dr. Crawford at her office Monday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.. The office is closed on Thursdays and Sundays.

Monument at Grays and East River has historic significance

As a board member of the Grosse Ile Historical Society, I brought up at a recent meeting (by Zoom,) that there’s a community event which has not been repeated for 115 years.

In fact PAMELA A. it revolves FRUCCI around Grosse Ile Grand another board member of the GIHS Kyle de Beausset. Kyle is the eighth generation of Alexander and William Macomb, who bought Grosse Ile from the Potowatomi Indians on July 6, 1776.

That historic event was 245 years ago and in 1906 Madeleine Macomb Stanton, a descendant of the Macombs, was involved in a ceremony at the site of the original treaty tree where the deed was signed by the Macombs and 18 chiefs of the Potowatomi Indians.

In 1906 a group of women who were known as The Women’s Improvement Association raised $100, enough money to build the monument.

At a ceremony at the site, she lifted off the covering to reveal the wording on the monument: This stone marks the location of the treaty tree and commemorates the conveyance by treaty of Grosse Ile (known to the Indians as Kitcheminishon and adjacent islands to William and Alexander Macomb by the Pottawatomie Indians. The treaty was signed by eighteen chiefs for the Pottawatomie nation of Indians on July 6, 1776.

I presented the idea of rededicating the monument at a public ceremony in July 2021 to the Grosse Ile Historical Society board, but it would involve cordoning off Gray’s Drive and East River Road, an almost impossible logistic task!

Fellow board member de Beausset had a better idea.

Do the re-enactment at Westcroft Gardens, the oldest farm in Michigan still in the same family (the Macombs.)

The event will be held at the Westcroft Gardens’ new Azalea House on July 6 from 5:30 to 7

p.m. The Azalea House has limited capacity, so reservations will be required.

Great Lakes Way outlines outdoor adventures Thanks to John Hartig, a new resident of Grosse Ile, who shared this information on the Great Lakes Way. Hartig, who was head of the International Wildlife Refuge, is now working out of the University of Windsor as a visiting scholar at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research where he handles the clean-up of the worst polluted areas of the Great Lakes.

He is also chair of the Great Lakes Way Advisory Committee.

He writes that in America we have the Appalachian Trail and the Rocky Mountains have the Continental Divide Trail, now the Community Foundation for SE Michigan has launched the GreenWays Initiative.

Their $33 million and private contributions of another $125 million are directed to plan, design, finance, and build more than 100 miles of connected greenways across southeast Michigan.

Historic home lovingly restored by the Zucckers When Gregg and Barbara Zuccker found out their relatives’ (Carl and Hazel Bauman) historic home was for sale on Grosse Ile back in 2004, they decided to become the new owners.

In the 17 years since, they have poured hours of time and effort in bringing the morethan-160-year-old home up to modern day standards, but never losing the charm of the stone-covered house at 24532 East PAMELA A. FRUCCI River built in 1859 by Grosse Ile Grand the renowned architect Gordon Lloyd for Judge Samuel Douglass.

Gordon Lloyd not only designed this picturesque home but also many important edifices in Detroit such as the David Whitney House, the WrightKay Building on Woodward, and the University of Detroit’s School of Law on East Jefferson.

On Grosse Ile, he also designed the St. James Chapel.

To their credit, the Zucckers hired local labor to bring the historic home up to code, which required all new plumbing and electrical work.

They sandblasted the outside stone to give it a fresher look and restored the original floors and shored up the back porch.

They entirely redid the landscaping and Barbara keeps flowers blooming in the yard and Gregg does the lawn mowing.

Since the driveway is gravel and not asphalt, giving the home a more historic look, Barbara is constantly pulling weeds out of the drive.

They’re planning on staying on the Island but in a home that doesn’t require full time care, which they have put into their present home.

They’re hoping the new buyer will have the time and wherewithal to give this historic home the loving care it deserves.

Actor Tim Allen speaks at Hillsdale College Because one of my husband Jack’s favorite TV shows - Last Man Standing is written, produced and stars Tim Allen, we got tickets for Hillsdale College’s Commencement at which Allen was the

speaker on May 8.

In his address, which was both live and shown on a giant screen for the huge audience (inside because of bad weather,) he shared with the audience his life story which included a time in jail before he ended up a well-paid actor, writer and producer.

He told his listeners to “be passionate, make better choices, and become the person you admire.”

Tim Allen was awarded a degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.

Not the typical birthday gifts On my 89th birthday, I got two gifts from our daughter Marti. Not jewelry or a new blouse but a heated toilet seat and

a cleaning lady for a day!

Mystery man and woman Jack and I were enjoying my birthday dinner at the TV Diner on May 25, partly because of their good food and partly because you get a free dessert on your birthday.

When we went to pay for the dinner, our waitress said, “Some lady at another table paid your bill!”

We have no idea who this mystery lady was, but would like to thank her!

Another mystery is the guy who approached two friends of mine at the post office and told them he had written a book that was for sale on Amazon.

My friends got the name of the book

but not the name of the writer. Since I chair the Creative Writing Club, I’d like to find out who this guy is and if he’d come to one of our meetings and share with us his writing of the book that is for sale on Amazon: My First Ninety Years.

Good-bye to former coach Jay Tissot, track and football coach and athletic director at Grosse Ile High School for 35 years, passed away May 8 at age 93.

After his first wife died, he married Donna Guido. Her loving care and good cooking contributed to his long life.

St. Thomas to host weekly farm event BILL STEVENSON Grosse Ile Grand

Island residents and visitors looking for a local outdoor marketplace this summer, need to look at the corner of Church and Meridian roads.

Beginning every Friday, June 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. a pop-up market will be held in the parking lot of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, featuring artisans, craftspeople, and farm fare.

According to Ben Fogt, president of the church council, “The church hopes to carry on a tradition begun in 2016 by Michael and Bob Johnson who started a farmers’ market with their nonprofit farm, Grosse Ile Gardens of Hope. That market occupied a small greenhouse in the sales area of Westcroft Gardens on Saturday mornings. Our family became very involved as our sons formed the GI Bread Brothers and sold sourdough bread,” Fogt said.

“With the challenges of 2020 came loss for the gardens.

Michael Johnson passed away in January of 2020 after rebranding the organization as Community Grown Gardens and setting up a sustainable 501c3 structure.

With Michael gone and some key market volunteers stepping back.

“Director Danielle West decided to discontinue the Saturday market, but is still working with Community Grown Gardens throughout the week,” said Fogt. “The Downtown Development

Authority (DDA) investigated taking it over, but couldn’t find a suitable place to host it.

“As part of St. Thomas’ 2021 goal to further engage with the community, we figured our parking lot on Friday evenings would be a perfect, centralized location.”

Among those vendors lined up on Fridays to serve the needs of the community are Color Street Nails, Bootlegger Kombucha, Community Grown Gardens, MI Cookie Project, GI Bread Brothers, RaftcRafts, Brost Farms (Beef, Pork, and Chicken), and Island Girls Honey.

“We are looking to add live music to the market experience as we go on,” said Fogt, excitedly.

As the popularity of the market grows, the number and variety of the vendors will too.

I’ve been advocating for “Small” (local and independently owned) since about 2007, when I read a book that woke me up. That book made me realize what was happening.

Since then, “normal” has been changing so fast that it’s hard to get a bead on it.

Amazon did $14.8 billion in sales in 2007. It did $108 billion in the first quarter of this year, a 44% increase of the prior year.

The growth of Amazon has come at the expense of many other Peter Rose businesses, primarily companies that Grosse Ile degraded retail in the first place, and Grand we saw many bankruptcies in 2020 as those firms tried and often failed to remain viable.

Mainly because what they offered was self-serve, with less and less effort to field trained and helpful people.

So, if no one wants to help, why buy there when the same level of engagement is offered without leaving one’s home?

Though many have failed during the Covid storm, small businesses have done better than many feared.

They have advocates, you see. Small store owners interact directly with their clients. They are known as actual people and appreciated by Small.

What Small offers is a never-ending variety of unique and special.

You have morons like me offer a free potato with every purchase one year. Good luck getting that at Men’s Wearhouse - hah.

People need the quirkiness; businesses that have infinite takes on what’s important to offer. I am seeing more “shop small” signs than ever. Shop local, local first, and so on. There are a lot of people that value the places they consider to be theirs.

All of this is a preamble, though, dear friends.

There are several developers of properties here in Wyandotte that used the time of uncertainty to prepare for the return of business.

As Wyandotte returns to vibrance, there is a whole list of newness, and a serious amount of momentum that we would not be experiencing without their ambition, taste and nerve.

In the 1950s, Wyandotte was a serious downtown, bustling with three theaters, many furniture stores, many clothing stores, several banks and so on.

Right now, here in 2021, I think we are going to see the level of energy here surpass those busy days.

It’s different, but it makes Wyandotte a very busy hub of activity, especially in the arena of eateries.

As it has all developed and come to various stages of readiness, the sense of dominance for

miles and miles grows. There are many fine places to eat in our Downriver area. There is nothing that comes close to Wyandotte - especially downtown Wyandotte - when it comes to a concentration of truly excellent choices for so many niches it’s almost embarrassing.

It’s one of the elements of a vital, busy town.

These things don’t happen by sorcery; they happen because good things are built that attract people to spend their money here.

In April, our officers responded to 3 calls for service to find individuals suffering from an apparent opioid overdose. This week, every member of the Grosse lle Police Department received training in the proper administration of Naloxone, a life saving drug that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Many people - most, perhaps - go to an optometrist, get an eye exam and then follow the lady in the white coat over to the wall of frames and pick out a new set of glasses.

The story ends with the customer paying way more than he or she ever expected.

Schmittou has been in the eyeglass game for a long time. He enlisted in the Army after graduating from Lincoln Park High School and Uncle Sam sent him to school to learn how to make eyeglasses.

He did that in the Army for nearly four years and then worked for Lenscrafters and for private doctors after that.

In 2012 he opened New Eyes Optical and has been there ever since.

Schmittou said he has over 1,300 frames in his building and can make arrangements to get others if customers come in with a specific brand or style in mind.

For sunglass lovers, Schmittou said he has the largest selection of Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses in the area.

If you come in, you will deal with Schmittou himself. He and his wife Pam are the only employees. Schmittou does the fitting of the eyewear, and Pam orders frames and keeps the shop looking fresh by arranging the frame displays and decorating.

Grosse Ile Garden Club plans inaugural Island Fair

In 1927, the year it was organized at the Gordon Everett boat house on West River Road, the Grosse Ile Garden Club began a long tradition of sponsoring an annual community flower and vegetable exhibition. This locally judged event continued for many years before slowly fading out in the 1950s.

Returning to its early beginnings, the garden club announced its inaugural Island Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at Centennial Farm, 25757 Third Street, on Grosse Ile. The event will be patterned after a regular state fair and will include events and contests that were more prevalent years ago, but which lend themselves to oldfashioned family fun.

Events will include a judged exhibit of homegrown vegetables and flowers, an art exhibit, a salute to veterans, a pet parade, an equestrian demonstration, a Potawatomi seed and plant display, a pie-eating contest, a quilting demonstration, local vendors, a garden-related silent auction and more. Admission is free, but there will be a small fee for judged events.

The Island Fair is a fundraiser for the Grosse Ile Garden Club.

The group maintains seven gardens on the Island, including its premier Keep Michigan Beautiful award-winning Four Corner Garden and Butterfly Garden.

Club members donate annually to Goodfellows and Salvation Army through a charity auction and provide a scholarship to Grosse Ile High School students. The club is a member of the Michigan Garden Club and the National Garden Club.

The group is seeking sponsors for the Island Fair. Sponsorships are available as follows: Sunshine, $300 and above; Good Earth, $100 to $299; and Gentle Rain, $50 to $99.

Documentary: Bob-lo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale will be available in October Way back in August 2020, I worked

with Aaron Schillinger, a young man and his crew, to do a documentary on Sugar Island and its past history.

As a producer, he is putting together not only the background story on the history of Sugar Island, now a wildlife reserve, but also what is happening with the old Bob-lo boats that once plied the waters past Grosse Ile heading for Bob-lo, the former amusement park.

The finished product will be available for showing in local movie theaters and Aaron tells me he could make arrangements for Grosse Ile residents and especially members of the Grosse Ile Historical Society to see a special showing of the documentary.

Right now it is under production and as soon as it’s ready for viewing, Aaron will get back to me.

Thanks to Sacred Heart Victory Garden volunteers More than 20 volunteers have signed up to plant and care for the vegetables they’ve planted at the Sacred Heart Victory Garden.

Enclosed in a deer-proof enclosure on the Sacred Heart grounds, there are rows of tomatoes, cabbage, and

other vegetables enjoying the warmer weather and the rain although there is a source of water at the garden.

Overseen by Terry Eifert, the volunteers were invited to join together for a potluck picnic on Sat., May 29 inside the building due to bad weather that day.

The produce benefits the volunteer gardeners and much of the surplus is given away to organizations in need of fresh vegetables.

Flowers, flags brighten up the airport memorial signboard At the end of Meridian Road where it meets Groh Road at the former Naval Air Station, is a memorial signboard honoring the days when it was actively run by the U.S. Navy.

It’s not only a sign but is surrounded by a garden recently planted with red, white, and blue flowers and several small American flags.

Trish Lukasik and I did the planting and Trish handles the watering of the plants.

The colorful and patriotic entrance to the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport was planted just in time for the upcoming Island Fest.

As usual, Grosse Ile track team finishes strong Hank Minckiewicz Grosse Ile Grand

The end of every high school season seems to bring good things for the Grosse Ile girls track team. The end of the 2021 campaign was no different.

The Red Devils won their portion of the Metro Classic at Roosevelt on May 15, qualified four athletes in five events for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state finals and finished second to a powerful Monroe Jefferson team in the Huron League meet.

First the Classic.

This year’s meet was divided into two sessions - morning for the smaller schools, afternoon for the larger - to help teams accomplish social distancing.

Running in the morning, Grosse Ile scored 171 points to outdistance runner-up Huron,which scored 151.

Summit Academy was third. Grosse Ile’s boys, who scored 91 points, were second to Huron, which had 156.

Trenton was third.

In the afternoon session, Woodhaven won both the boys and girls titles. The Woodhaven boys scored 172 points and beat Wyandotte (101) and Carlson

(100). The Woodhaven girls scored 142 and beat Allen Park (132.5) and Wyandotte (105.5).

In winning the Metro Classic, Grosse Ile got contributions up and down its lineup, but the distance crew really stood out.

Andi Fuklmer, who would later be a two-time state-meet qualifier, won the mile and half-mile. She was followed by second-place Anna Malonson in the mile and third-place Alaina Gartner in the half-mile.

Malonson won the two-mile, followed by teammate Katie Keim in second place.

Grosse Ile then won the two-mile relay with Malonson, Nicole Roque, Alyssa Ice and Fulmer running 10:58 to blow away second-place Trenton, and they finished second in the mile relay with Michelle Roque, Ice, Ciara Armstrong and Fulmer running.

Grosse Ile also got first-place efforts from Marina Rensi in the 300 hurdles and Natalie Christnagel in the high jump.

At the league meet in Milan on May 25, Grosse Ile scored 100 points, 2.5 ahead of third-place Huron, but 45 points behind meet champ Jefferson. Jefferson’s boys also won with a whopping 202 points. Grosse Ile was seventh with 38.

Fulmer won the mile and Christnagel won the high jump, but those were Grosse Ile’s only two gold medal performances of the afternoon. The Red Devils used their depth to pile up triple-digit points.

Livingston was second in the 100 and fifth in the 200, Fulmer was second in the 800, Malonson was fourth and Keim sixth in the two-mile, Rensi was third in the 300 hurdles, Woods was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put and Molnar was sixth in the long jump.

In the relay events, Grosse Ile was second in the 4x100 (Armstrong, Christnagel, Molnar and Livingston) and third in both the 4x200 (Armstrong, Christnagel, Molnar and Livingston) and the 4x800 (Michelle Roque, Gartner, Ice and Fulmer).

At the tough No. 16 regional on May 21, Grosse Ile finished in sixth place with 54 points. Ahead of the Red Devils were regional champ Chelsea (134) Tecumseh (90.5), Jefferson (69), Milan (62) and Huron (55.5).

At that event, four Grosse Ile athletes punched their tickets for the 2021 MHSAA state finals, which were run June 5 at Zeeland High School.

Those four were Fulmer, who won the mile and was second in the two mile, Christnagel, who won the high jump, Rensi, who was second in the 300 hurdles, and Livingston, who was second in the 100 meter dash.

The boys team’s finish to the 2021 season was not as medal-filled as the girls, but the Red Devils did have a few shining moments, especially in their second-place showing at the Metro Classic.

Grosse Ile’s only win at the event came from Jack Reno in the shot put, but the Devils scored up and down the line in 16 of the 17 events.

Lucas Centlivre was second in the 800, the 4x400 relay team of Robert Standen, Centlivre, Zach Bast and Tyler Swick was second, Joey Pizzo was third in the long jump and fourth in the 100, Tyler Swick was third in the 400, Bast was fourth in the 400 and the 4x800 relay team of Bast, Nick Griffin, Trey Swick and Centlivre was also fourth.

The Grosse Ile girls soccer team beat Huron last month to cap an 11-1 Huron League season, avenge an earlier 1-0 loss to the Chiefs and wrap up Grosse Ile’s eighth straight league title.

The Red Devils got goals from Sofia Pinkowski and Olivia Barnard and it was enough for a 2-1 win over the Chiefs, who finished the league season with an 8-2-2 record.

Last week Grposse Ile hosted a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 district tournament. The other teams there were Summit Academy, Taylor Prep, Flat Rock and Derarborn Henry Ford.

The Red Devils were supposed to open the tournament against Dearborn Henry Ford, but the Navigators failed to show for the game giving Grosse Ile a walk into the district finals.

by Flat Rock, setting up a Grosse IleFlat Rock district championship game.

The district finals were June 4 (after The Grand’s deadline) with the winner

advancing to regionals at Detroit Country Day. There was no season or state tournament last year, but the Red Devils won the previous nine district titles.

They reached the regional finals in 2012, 2013 and 2015 and 2017 and the

state semifinals in 2016.

Red Devils cap solid season, head into districts Hank Minckiewicz Grosse Ile Grand

After starting the 2021 baseball season with a ghastly 0-5 mark, the Grosse Ile baseball turned things around nicely and finished with a 15-10 record and an 8-6 record in Huron League play.

Additionally, the Devils won their final five regular-season games of the year to head into the state playoffs with a lot of momentum.

Grosse Ile closed with a doubleheader sweep of Ann Arbor Skyline, a 10-4 win over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, an 8-1 win over Monroe Jefferson and a 3-2 non-league victory over Lincoln Park.

But in a pre-district game on June 1, it almost all came to a crashing, crushing end.

The Red Devils squared off against Huron League rival Flat Rock, the same Flat Rock team that had beaten 19-2 and 14-1 in their two league encounters earlier this season.

On June 1, runs were a little harder to come by, but the Devils, behind the strong pitching of Mike Madrigal, cruised into the seventh inning of that game with a 4-0 lead.

But the Rams refused to go quietly into the off season and they scored three times in the top of the seventh inning before the Red Devils could put out the fire and secure a 4-3 victory.

Madrigal went the full seven innings, striking out 10. He was backed by three hits from Ben Carter.

The victory pushed the team into the MHSAA Division 2 at Trenton on June 5, which was after The Grand’s deadline. Grosse Ile faced the stateranked host team and Jefferson faced Riverview in the other district semifinal.

The district champ advanced to regionals back at Trenton against the winner of the Divine Child district.

Teams in that district were Melvindale, Dearborn Henry Ford, Garden City, Dearborn Heights Annapolis and host Divine Child.

All six Grosse Ile High School boats entered in the Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan state meet regatta in Grand Rapids last month fought their way into the finals. And one - the Women’s Novice Four - won the state title. The Women’s Varsity Eight also had a great showing, picking up third-place honors. Grosse Ile also got fourthplace efforts from the Men’s Junior Four and the Men’s Novice Four and sixth-place efforts from the Women’s Double and the Women’s Junior Four.

Michigan Leadership Institute’s John Silveri said, “This is the first time I have ever seen this happen, which I think is a positive. It speaks to the strength of the candidate field.

“Every single one of the six candidates interviewed, at least one board member spoke in favor of, which I think is pretty remarkable. But on the other hand, six of you expressed support for Valerie Orr. “There is just a clear distinction that every member of the Board can support her advancing, and it’s such a mixed bag beyond that, that I hate to have you just grab another candidate to say, ‘Okay, now we have two.’”

Eventually, the Board decided to conduct a second interview with Ms. Orr, and make a site visit to the Whiteford district.

Board President Dan Murphy said the site visit was virtual because Whiteford Agricultural Schools still had a policy of no visitors.

“She felt bad about allowing us to have an in-person visit, but I think it speaks volumes about her character not to bend the rules,” said Murphy.

“We are very excited about this candidate. She has experience as a superintendent, principal experience in two districts and knows this area. “(She) really jumped out during the first interviews. She answered the questions well, knows Michigan school laws and funding. (She) impressed the board during her final interview. She spoke of

making this great district even better, shared a plan on improving communications with parents and the community and looks forward to starting up our Strategic Plan to set new goals for the district.”

Orr grew up in Canton, Michigan and moved with her family to the city of Wayne in eighth grade. She graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1993. She received her B.S. degree from Eastern Michigan University in Mathematics in 2001, and her Master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction in 2003.

She taught mathematics in the WayneWestland school district, and received her State of Michigan Administrator’s Certificate in 2008.

After serving as assistant principal at Wayne Memorial, Ms. Orr became the principal of the high school from which she graduated, serving until 2013. She was the principal of Monroe High School until 2015, when she became the superintendent of Whiteford Agricultural Schools.

Ms. Orr is married to her husband, Brent, and has two children.

Upon hearing of her selection after the lengthy search process, Ms. Orr said, “I am sincerely honored to become the next Superintendent of Grosse Ile Township Schools. The close knit community and traditions of excellence drew me to this opportunity and I feel blessed to have been selected!”
