INSPECTION OF THE WAYNE COUNTY BRIDGE CONTINUES

A

s many of our readers are already aware, you may wish to allow yourself some extra time when leaving the island. At the time this article was written the Wayne County Bridge has been reduced to one lane. On Tuesday, August 1 at about 11:00 am the bridge’s westbound lane was closed to all motorist traffic. By: Cameron Colwell The one lane closure is occurring so that workers may continue assessing structural integrity of the bridge. Both east and westbound traffic are able to cross the bridge in alternating fashion. The flow of traffic is being instructed by traffic lights, that were quickly placed the weekend before the one lane closure. The bridge is still open to all forms of water traffic. Many island residents were

concerned after the Wayne County Bridge, also known as the “Free Bridge”, saw a week of scheduled closures in the middle of June. The reasons behind this series of closures was for Wayne County to inspect structural concerns that had been noted. What the June inspection did

identify was the need for three of the supporting piers to be repaired. The three piers were reported to be partially deteriorated. Kaye Byrd, the Director of Communications for Wayne County

WWII VET JERALD McCOMB LEAVING GROSSE ILE AFTER 32 YEARS By Pamela A. Frucci South Bend native Jerald McComb is selling his home on Rucker where he’s lived for 32 years and moving to Ohio near Toledo to be closer to his daughter. At 95-years-old, he has a lot of memories, especially the time he served as a mechanic in the Army during WWII. He flew on board what got to be named a Jungle Skipper which served to drop parachutists over fighting zones and fly in needed gasoline supplies. These planes got their name since they flew low over the jungles so anti-aircraft guns couldn’t target them. His plane had no guns. Jerald joined the service in 1942 and was discharged in 1945 after serving 3½ years. The medals he earned cite his 2,000 hours in the air and 1,000 hours of combat flying. Luckily, he has scrapbooks that tell of his experiences in WWII. One experience he recalled when chatting with him was when the aircraft wheels wouldn’t go down. The plane was low on gas and had to land but it was not safe without landing gears. With his training as a mechanic, he was able to figure out the problem and they landed safely. When in South Bend, he worked for Studebaker and then in the drafting department for Fords until he retired in 1982. Still in good health, Jerald credits always having a project going. He enjoys fishing and hunting and working on antique clocks. He recently completed renovating his basement for the new owners of his home which sold the second day it was listed.

One vivid memory is after the war, the troops were on a ship to carry them from the South Pacific to California. A mighty cheer broke out to signal how happy the returning soldiers were to be home again.

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

In the works is a sign at the entrance to the municipal airport. The Airport Memorial Committee, headed by John Raithel, was interested in hearing my idea to incorporate a sign at the Groh/Meridian entrance to township hall and the airport that would honor its history as the Grosse Ile Naval Air Station. That’s where when I was growing up and Groh Road was closed to only Naval personnel By Pamela A. Frucci and those with passes. A Navy guard would stand duty at both entrances to the Navy base. When the Navy left in 1969 and the township took over, it seemed to lack recognition at the Meridian/Groh Road entrance of its Naval history. What’s being proposed is a sign showing a traditional Navy personnel, the years as a Naval Air Station (1942-69) and the same message that was on the old sign at the guard station: “Through these portals pass the world’s finest aviators.” Of course, that includes former president George Bush, Sr., Donald Rumsfeld, Bob Barker, and Amelia Earhart. GROSSE ILE HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS NEW BOARD AND NEW DIRECTION When the Grosse Ile Historical Society was founded in 1959, the founders would be pleased to see the organization dedicated to preserving the history of the Island is still going strong after almost 60 years. A new board took its place in April of 2017 replacing long time and dedicated members Marc Lafayette, Tammy Taylor, and Dallas Kelsey. The current president is Tony Krukowski, who retired as the finance director for the Grosse Ile schools in 2014. Now he’s following other interests than accounting. He and his wife Jeanne can travel, he’s writing a column for the TrentonTrib, and has become active in the Creative Writing Club. He and his wife have gotten the G.I. Historical Society website and newsletter up and running for better communication and the new board includes some younger members with the skills that help make the future of the Society bright. New on the board are Rich Brower, owner

of Island Roots and a volunteer fireman, who’s taken on cleaning up the grounds by handling two truck loads of tree branches and shrubs that had become overgrown. Sue Zink has been active with the Holiday Boutique, the annual fundraiser for the Society. Off-Islander but still with roots on Grosse Ile, Jane Barnes drives over to meetings from Taylor. Another newcomer is Kevin Langley, a volunteer fireman. The new president Tony Krukowski wants to increase membership in the Historical Society by providing members not only information through the website but the newsletter. He’d like to make sure that when they join, members feel involved and get something in return for their membership. Upcoming activities of the Society include taking part in the annual garage sale on Aug. 18 and 19 where items with some historic value will be sold on the front lawn of the museum, the annual lighthouse tour Sept. 10 and a lecture on Prohibition on Oct. 22 and how it affected Grosse Ile by George Gouth, member of the Wyandotte Historical Society. The Society is working on scheduling a future tea party at the Pagoda House, whose owners host the teas that include a tour of their historic home. Also a means of covering expenses of running the museum, the upstairs apartment over the Customs House

has been renovated and rented. Treasurer Gary Kadau is happy to have this added income. President Tony Krukowski credits the Museum Committee, made up of volunteers, who show up every Thursday and handle the archives of the Society, for making sure the apartment got its needed repair and renovation to make it rentable. The new board’s most recent activity was a clean-up of the grounds of the museum and Customs House. Badly in need of sprucing up, most of the board and some volunteer help from the Nature & Land Conservancy showed up on July 30 from noon to four to clear overgrown shrubs, rake up fallen twigs, clear gutters from accumulated leaves, power wash the outside of the Customs House, and sweep and clean cobwebs and debris from the porch of the Customs House. The new board is bringing new energy to the Grosse Ile Historical Society and they would like to see the public rediscover the museum which is open every Sunday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. CONCERTS ON THE COMMONS: A MUSICAL WAY TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON Almost 200 people sat on lawn chairs or blankets and enjoyed the opening concert featuring Barry Van

Engelen on June 25. Flyers with the whole summer season of performers are available at the concerts or at the post office or township hall. The Grosse Ile Grand publishes the dates as well. Sponsored by the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts, the Downtown Development Authority, and a generous check from the Richard and Rosie Meyer family, the concert flyers announce that the concerts are free. Free to listen to but the sponsors pay the performers! This summer single acts perform for $150 and ensembles for $300. At the July 30 concert with Benny of the Jets, he not only performed for about 150 attendees on lawn chairs, blankets, and benches at the Commons, but he broadcast the performance on his Facebook page. His grandson and wife attended the concert and while Dominic played the guitar along with his grandpa, Benny’s wife Pam strolled around the crowd with Benny’s phone capturing the concert and sending it out to listeners around the world. Benny told me he heard back that people as far away as Texas and the Philippines were tuned in and the count was over 2,000! Since 2003, the GIAA has been bringing the community the Concerts on the Commons. As a member of the GIAA, let me share our vision written when we first organized in 2003: “To offer artistic events in order to provide Grosse Ile families the regular opportunity to enjoy, be exposed to, and actively participate in the arts in all forms, the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts thereby becoming a significant resource for the township’s cultural expansion and growth. WELL, WHO’S GOT THE WELL? The Museum Committee of the G.I. Historical Society recently acquired the wooden letters that once hung at the Wonder Well at the foot of South Pointe. There’s no longer any trace of the well that attracted visitors from all over to drink its water that came underground all the way from Lake Superior. All that’s left is an empty lot that’s for sale. However, the committee only has the letters for Wonder. The Well is missing. It’s hoped that whoever took the letters Well will give them to the Museum Committee so they have a complete former sign of the historic well.

The source of funds for this Grant program is the DDA Tax Increment Revenue. Funding will be determined each fiscal year based on capital improvement project plans for that year, as approved by the Grosse Ile Township Board. The current budget for the 2017–2018 Fiscal Year is at $20,000. (This is coming from prior year resources – Tax Increment Finance Authority.) To be eligible for the program, applicant must be current owners or new tenants that are moving to the Macomb Street Business District as defined by the DDA plan. They

must be interested in expanding, adding physical improvement, or beautification of their current space. Island Living I’m writing this article on July 31st, 10 AM, you will not be reading it until August 10th at the earliest. I open with that as a form of disclaimer because we will all have been impacted by the repairs on the Wayne County Bridge. Right now I can only say that the representatives from Wayne County have been very considerate in working with your Township staff in an By Brian Loftus effort to make this project as painless as possible. Mr. Bernard Parker, Warren Evans’ Deputy Chief of Staff, contacted me Friday morning (July 28th) with a request for an immediate meeting with Township officials. When we learned about the scope and immediacy of the project, your staff went to work immediately, Chief Porcarelli focusing on traffic control and safety, DPS Director Beneteau concentrating on removal of the sludge from our Waste Water Treatment Plant, myself contacting the Coast Guard to limit swings of the bridge for vessel traffic, and a number of other efforts to reduce the impact on your daily lives. Rest assured, you have a very devoted staff here, I am proud to work with them. This is only the beginning of the longterm repair that the bridge requires if it is to remain in useful service to our island community. The current focus is on the support piers, at least three of which need some degree of restoration. Future plans are to complete all necessary repairs and restore the bridge to its original load capabilities. Obviously this will take time, but I was greatly encouraged by the County’s dedication to this project. We are reminded of the drawbacks to living on an island, just remember the benefits of living on OUR Island. For the second time I was able to see our Public Safety team respond to an emergency, up close and personal. The first event was a few years ago, when they – Police and Fire/Rescue, revived my neighbor who was probably clinically dead. I was truly impressed by the interaction of the two departments, they knew exactly what to do to support each other even without speaking. Last

This is only the beginning of the longterm repair that the bridge requires if it is to remain in useful service to our island community. Thursday’s visit was not life or death – a small fire had broken out, undetected for some time, in my neighbor’s house which is in the middle of a remodel project. Police assisted the firefighters in reaching the site of the fire and it was extinguished immediately. That same teamwork led to a reasonably happy conclusion – it would have become a ‘through the-roof’ fire without their quick, professional response. As a bonus, my grandson was in two-yearold heaven – police cars and fire engines with lots of flashing lights! Since it will be challenging to get on or off Grosse Ile, why not check out all the activities we have right here at home? Tap the “Events” button on the Grosse Ile Connect app (you do have the app, don’t you?) to learn what’s happening throughout the Township. Pool and Golf are open at Waters Edge, Angela is planning Macomb Street events, the Island–Wide Garage sale is coming soon, relax at Concerts on the Commons or at Smokies, so much more! Try it – you must might find interesting and fun things to do right here, maybe a short walk or bike ride from your home. Let me close with a safety caveat – actually several. Drivers – kids are out of school and playing everywhere, that’s what they do! We are a residential community so please don’t try to make up the time you lost at the bridge by speeding around the island. Sadly, a young lad drowned last week in Trenton, a grim reminder that safety is paramount around water; watch over each other and wear PFD’s! With that, enjoy summer here on the island and I’ll try to keep everyone informed about progress on the bridge. Best wishes for a fun, safe summer! Supervisor Brian Loftus

Ford Yacht Club Celebrates 70 Years By Wendy Gravlin enry Ford was a man with a vision. He set the world on wheels and created an empire. After World War II, Detroit was a thriving city built on the growing need for automobiles. As his company grew and more people flocked to the Motor City, Ford saw the need for recreational outlets for his employees. As a result, he created a recreation department in 1947, and recruited employees with similar interests. It was from this organization in 1947, that the Ford Yacht Club was conceived. The original 12 members were engineers who held their first meeting in June of that year. The group promptly adopted a club constitution, and annual dues were set for $15 for all members who agreed to pay the $25 initiation fee. The members then elected W. C. Vincent as their first commodore. It wasn’t until the next year that land was acquired for the club. Located on the southern tip of Grosse Ile on the Detroit River, and surrounded by water on three sides, the 174 acre parcel was acquired from the Stadler family. Initially, this site was not what the members envisioned for a recreational area, but it turned out to be a diamond in the rough. At the time of the purchase, this location was overgrown by heavy brush and scrub trees, according to Ford Yacht Club archives. With the hard work and dedication of its members, it eventually proved to be an excellent site. It was then that a crude clubhouse and the first dock were constructed from salvaged lumber. The property acquisition also included Round Island, which was originally designated for homesites. Homes were never constructed on the island, but members still ponder the beautiful piece of land’s possibilities. In 1957, the members decided that they had outgrown their first clubhouse so they decided to build a larger building with a 60 foot long porch. The same year the first Regatta was held at the club. According to Rear Commodore and second generation member, Keith Walker, a regatta is a series of boat races. The term typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed watercraft, although some power boat race series are also called regattas. This first race began a long-standing tradition that Ford Yacht Club still celebrates today. While the men were sailing in races, the wives quickly organized to help support the club. Their goal was to provide activities and entertainment for the members and their families. In 1953, they organized the auxiliary, but needed to vote on an official name. They voted from a

H

variety of names for their group including the Anchorettes, Petticoat Crew, and Anchors. The name, “The First Mates” carried the vote and this dedicated group of women continue to organize wonderful events for their members today. In 1962, rising waters threatened to flood the clubhouse, and Ford Motor Company stepped up to offer assistance. Earlier that same year, the Ford Rotunda Building in Dearborn was destroyed by fire. Ford donated concrete from the Rotunda building as fill material to help stave off the flood waters. The fill material was placed on the corner base of the building to alleviate the damage near the outside ladder leading to the balcony. Ever since, members refer to this area as “Rotunda Corner.” Over the years, improvements have been

made to the club and to the docks. Membership continued to grow at a steady rate and in 1972 the club purchased the property from Ford Motor Company. It was at that time that a Board of Trustees was established to oversee the major financial matters and longterm plans for improvements of the club. The Board of Directors was replaced by an Executive Committee of the four Flag Officers who would operate the club through their operating committees. Ford Yacht Club is a gem on the island and continues to grow in membership. The Great Lakes Scuttlebutt said in an article featuring Ford Yacht Club in 2012, “The current facility has a view of Lake Erie that is second to none.” Today the club is approximately 60 percent power boaters and 40 percent sail boaters. There are many combined boating programs and an active racing program for competitive sailors. Every year the club organizes rendezvous by boat and bus to many locations on the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie. At the end of the boating season, the club and its members still have a variety of entertainment to choose from including live music entertainment, murder mystery parties, and Put in Bay entertainers suck as Mad Dog Adams and Ray Fogg. This year marks Ford Yacht Club’s 70th anniversary. The current bridge officers reflected on what being a member of Ford Yacht Club means to them. Lifetime member, Sail Fleet Captain Steve Boettner, shared that he remembered when all the kids would come to his mother when they needed a tooth pulled. “She would just grab a bar napkin and take care of business,” said Boettner. “I love this club and I have wonderful memories growing up here,” he added. Rear Commodore, Keith Walker, another second generation member and a lifelong sailor, became a member in 1972 when his father joined the club. He and his wife, Megan, remembers also growing up at the club. “I remember a strict no kids in the clubhouse policy after dark when I was little. It didn’t matter whose child you were, when it was nine o’clock, adults ushered us outside. We would go out onto the porch and dance to the music,” said Megan. “If we were good,” she added, “one of the adults would come out with ice cream. We loved growing up here! Today we have a variety of fun activities for kids of all ages. The First Mates, Vice Commodore Kevin Wilson and Lady Yvonne, just organized family day. Kids had a ball.” Commodore Steve Gravlin has been a member for

11 years. “I have so much respect for the timeless traditions of FYC and for the hard work of those Commodores before me to make this a great club. You get out of it what you put into it, and those who enjoy the club the most are the ones who put time into making it a great place for everyone. We have everything from people who race during the week, to young families who want to expose their children to recreational boating, to social members who enjoy the fine dining and clubhouse. The overlap in groups and welcoming atmosphere, make this a great place for anyone who enjoys the Great Lakes. I am honored to be Commodore of a club with such a diverse group of recreants and friends,” said Gravlin. This year’s regatta will take place August 18-19. “The race will be sailed in Canadian waters, southeast of Bar Point, using fixed marks,” said Rear Commodore Keith Walker. “The course will be selected based upon wind direction, and wind speed. The length of the course will be between four and eleven nautical miles. The short course will be selected if there is less wind,” Walker added. The Ford Yacht Club regatta will have several classes which include: Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker or JAM, and a cruising class. The first racing class should start at 11 am, with five minutes between each class start. “If you have never seen a start of a sail race, I highly recommend it,” said Sail Fleet Captain Steve Boettner. While the race is on Saturday morning, the party kicks off on Friday. Entertainment this year promises to be phenomenal, says Vice Commodore Kevin Wilson. “On Friday we have the band,“Howlin’

Mercy”, who are originally from Grosse Ile, performing from 5-8 pm, and then “Category 5” will follow up with entertainment starting at 8:30 pm. We are thrilled to have Put in Bay Headliners, “The Menus” on Saturday starting at 9 pm. “The 70th anniversary regatta is a great way to showcase our beautiful club to our community,” said Board Member, Paul Brown. “It’s true that we have the most beautiful view on the island, but it is our members who make this club shine,” he added.

Club information “Ford Yacht Club now has 390 active members and 229 senior members and we continue to grow,” says Membership Chairman Mark Hinzmann. The club offers a number of boat wells and a small boat harbor for the launch of trailerable boats. They are members of the Associated Yacht Clubs (AYC), The Interlake’s Yacht Association (I-LYA), Detroit Regional Yacht racing Association (DRYA), Yachting Clubs of America, The International Order of Blue Gavel and The International Satin Gavel. Ford Yacht Club is located at 29500 South Pointe Road, Grosse Ile, MI 48138. For more information about Ford Yacht Club call 734-6768422, or visit their website at: www. fordyachtclub.com.

Angels Are Not Always Pretty Women With Wings It has been almost nine years since I gave up alcohol in honor of all those that gave their lives in Vietnam.

It has been almost ten years since I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. It has been almost nine years since I gave up alcohol in honor of all those that gave their lives in Vietnam. Alcohol had been my only type of solace to ward off the memories By David L. Dyer of all the death and destruction I had witnessed in Vietnam. It has been almost seven years since I joined the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church and put my total belief into the existence of God. At times I have actually felt the presence of God along with a few of his miraculous workings. I continue to follow his calling which is to do all I can to keep the memories alive of all those whose lives were taken to the horrors of war. Just this past week I had the pleasure of meeting a real live angel. My perception of angels had always been pretty women with wings. My wife, Janet, even has a collection of angels. My angel did not in any way fit that description, but it left me no doubt that my angel was heaven sent. Janet and I had been in Stratford, Ontario for three days, then one day at home and then up at 5 AM the next morning to catch a train to Chicago. I had done way too much walking without nearly enough rest. Extensive walking is very difficult and painful for me with Parkinsons. The pain had slowed me down to where I could hardly extend my legs further than

about six inches at a time. I was about to cross a very busy street in downtown Chicago. There must have been about thirty people waiting for that walk signal with just as many on the opposite side of the street. I was positioned at the far right of the others so I wouldn’t slow anyone else down. I gave it all I could, taking those short steps as fast as I could. I was halfway across when the toe of my right shoe hit an uneven piece of cement. I’d been walking very fast and lost control. I was falling and was about to hit that cement head first. I felt a very severe head injury coming or even being run over by a car. In that same split second of those thoughts came a man from the opposite direction. At exactly the same time my feet left the ground he clasped my right hand with his. He had enough strength in his arm to pull me to a standing position and I immediately gained my composure. He asked me “Are you all right?” I said “Yes I am.” He then said “Thank you for your service.” I had been wearing my Vietnam Veteran’s Hat. When I made it safely to the curb I turned around. He had disappeared into the crowd.

Bridge Many island residents were concerned after the Wayne County Bridge, also known as the “Free Bridge”, saw a week of scheduled closures in the middle of June.

CONTINUED from page 1 Department of Public Services, had reported at the time of the one lane closure that it would be indefinite. On July 29, once the findings from the original inspection made their way to Wayne County they immediately called for a meeting with Grosse Ile Township Officials, and announced they would be closing the westbound lane. While many residents were annoyed with the short notice of the closure, it was made as quickly as possible to guarantee the safety of public. What residents need to be aware of at this time is that the safety of the general motorist is the township’s primary concern. While the inspection and designing stage of the repair plan will be ongoing until later this month, the traffic situation may change as they come to understand more about. On August 4, I was informed by our Supervisor Brian Loftus that Wayne County has received more information on the integrity of the bridge since its closure earlier this week. They have

determined that it is safe to reopen the westbound lane and allow traffic to run both ways simultaneously. However, certain restrictions will be put into place to protect the stability of the bridge. As a measure to maintain the structural integrity of the bridge, the

enforced on both sides of the bridge, and is likely to be put in place. We want to remind all motorist coming and going via the Free Bridge to be patient with our township and maintenance workers. They are doing their best to ensure our safety, and the longevity of the bridge. Plan ahead for delays even when things seem to be running smoothly. Recognize that this repair process is an ongoing case, that may see many different stages. The township is working to minimize any inconveniences that may fall on the residents.

weight capacity has been reduced to 26 tons. This will close it off to many, if not all, load bearing trucks making their way on and off the island. Although there is not yet guarantee, there has also been mention of a speed limit reduction to 25 mph. This speed limit reduction would be heavily

8th Annual Rodger’s Family “FREE” Garage Sale By David L. Dyer That’s right “free” Garage Sale. All items are given away at absolutely no charge. This will be the eighth such sale for the Rodger’s Family and the fifth one I have been involved in. People may take any items they choose. We do ask for a donation of any amount you choose. Read on to see where those donations go. I first met Bethann Rodgers in the year of 2013. My good friend Linda Harmon (confined to a wheel chair with multiple sclerosis) introduced me to the lovely Bethann, a former gymnast, who is now into her twenty fourth year with MS. I, along with my Parkinson’s Disease joined their Auto Immune Group. In the year of 2010 Bethann and her family which includes her husband Steve, daughter, Annie, and son, Tommy went to Africa on a vacation. While there they learned firsthand what happens to the orphaned girls. When they become young teenagers they are either married off, sold, or destined to a life of poverty. Annie, all of thirteen years old at the time asked her mom “What can we do to help?” Together

they came upon this free garage sale idea. With plenty of assistance from friends and neighbors it immediately became successful. During those first three years through donations they were able to meet the $2000.00 price tag of sending a little girl to a Christian Boarding School in Kenya for grades K-12 each year. After hearing all that I told Bethann I’d like to join her this year (2013) especially since I was now a member of her Auto Immune Group. Further, my wife, Janet and I had accumulated an awful lot of “stuff” during the past twenty years. “Stuff” that was going to go into that garage sale that never

happened. I asked her “Why don’t we attempt to double the donations this year and send two little girls to school?” I wrote a couple of articles that were published in the Ile Camera asking the community for support. Janet and I took over not less than seven car loads of “stuff.” Even though we competed with over 140 other garage sales, when the donations were added by four different people, we had not only collected the $4,000 we had sought, we collected exactly $4,000. My now late brother, Wayne was so touched by what we had accomplished he wrote a check for $4,000 which matched our efforts and four little girls were on their way to school in Kenya. So Grosse Ile, once again we ask for your support. This year’s “sale” will begin at 9 AM on Saturday, August 19th at 26225 West River Road. Items may be dropped off on the front porch beginning Monday, August 14th and all throughout the week. Even though we no longer have the Ile Camera, our new newspaper, the Grosse Ile Grand has a much larger circulation. I personally ask for your support in this worthy cause.

FROM THE GABLES

One Man’s Trash Old houses tend to attract more than memories. The best of them I believe also have a way of magnetizing an assortment of things. And within this latter and unspecified category are oddments of all kinds. Moreover, these things tend to be or become reflections of who we were (or are) at any given time. By Mark McPherson Ergo, and in an overwhelmingly past-tense mode, quite often the “stuff” we consign to attics, basements, closets and garages are prime indicators of our Yesterdays. Last week was a case in point. Dori decided she wanted to assail one or more of our garage bays. These, as you may know, were intended as automotive protectorates, but often enough are compromised by other things. And dependent upon the season, such incunabula (great word, that—look it up) become sheltered against the shrill blasts of winter or to find themselves tucked in behind a thin layer of last autumn’s leaves. And in the case of our “Gables” garage, one might think it was intended for something more akin to a peculiar museum. Anyway, it was Dori’s idea to attack Mount Trash (not to be confused with Riverview’s fabled Trashmore) and so she did, with the help of the redoubtable Christopher, who often abets my lady wife with those chores I like to avoid. Just so, the two of them excavated Bay Four. Achieving this feat was sort of like a combo of probing Area 51 and perusing that Indiana Jones warehouse in search of the Lost Ark. But among the treasures recovered was not the Grail, the Ark, or the key to whether or not Amelia Earhart disappeared in our garage. Instead of that and amidst a staggering amount of stuff there were some of my wife’s much-missed garden implements, a box of her husband’s old manuscripts, and five or six old chairs. Now it’s probably age or forgetfulness or not attending fully to last weekend’s archaeological exploit, but by later that Sunday afternoon I

dispassionately spied a donate-able line-up of early trash beside our mailbox. Dori and Chris had arranged those archaic chairs, an old barbeque, a damaged trampoline, a rusted wheelbarrow and a girl’s bike much the worse for wear. And as the hours passed, from my porch-side perch I watched the inveterate seekers pull up along East River, speculate, and often get out and claim some portion of our trash as their new treasure. But most meaningful was seeing an attractive young woman pull up and begin loading those weathered old chairs into her hatch-back. More surprising yet, I recognized her as a friend, Krista Ewbank, who among her many other incarnations is also the leading light of Downriver’s latest dramatic venue, the Open Book Theater Company in Trenton. I yelled out to her and asked if she needed help? Krista said she might, that her vehicle might not contain all my reliquary furniture, which she intended to claim as properties for an upcoming theatrical production. Anyway, I offered to help, and just as rain was coming down I followed Krista to her Manchester manse and we unloaded the chairs. I told her I was glad she was taking them, for these had been unseen—but by silent occupants of our garage for the last two decades-plus. But it wasn’t until last night that I had my revelation. The voice inside my drowsing head said to me “You know, those chairs all belonged to your grandmother. Remember that when she passed on you laid claim to her dining room table, which now serves as your library desk, and her china cabinet for books, and her sideboard as—well—as a sideboard? And those unused chairs—her chairs-went into the dark. And now you’ve given them away as trash. Just what do you think your Grandma would say? I agonized. For it bothered me that I had so seemingly and churlishly, unthinkingly, disloyally, watched those old family relics literally “put to the curbside.” What about honor? What about memories? How dare I do such a thing?

‘Listening in on the Island’

In July I wrote about my old Lincoln looking and riding well at 19-years-old but there’s a lady in Trenton who has a 23-year-old Chevy that is the envy of the guys at Firestone who service her car. Every birthday this oldtimer lovingly puts a fresh coat of wax on her bright red car. Still behind the wheel of her sharp looking Impala, she By Pamela A. Frucci will drive to the quarterly luncheons for seniors at the Centennial Farm even though she’s hesitant to drive over our free bridge. Good friends with long time Island resident Betty Schafer, retired after serving the township as receptionist, this Trentonite was born on Macomb Street to Scottish parents who instilled frugality into their daughter as evidenced by her still driving a car built in 1994 with only 40,000 miles on it. She also cares for her beautiful garden in Trenton. Her son Dale lives on Grosse Ile and was recognized by the G.I. Garden Club as having a beautiful garden on Bridge Road.

MEETING 101-YEAROLD FORMER ACTRESS IS HIGHLIGHT TO TRIP TO NYC Our daughter Marti lives in NYC ever since graduating from Columbia University in 1986. We spent a week with her from July 10-16 and enjoyed seeing a Broadway play, Shakespeare in the Park, walks in Central Park, and a clipper ship ride to the Statue of Liberty. But the highlight of the trip was meeting a lady Marti had become friends with. We had a chance to chat with her in front of her apartment on one of the residential streets of NYC. Unbelievably still attractive in a stunning outfit, make-up, with every hair in place, this 101-year-old former actress shared stories with us about traveling the country performing in shows, being a close personal friend of Lucille Ball, but how many show girls are left who traveled with Bob Hope when he was entertaining our troops on the fighting lines in Europe during WWII? She was telling us

Every birthday this oldtimer lovingly puts a fresh coat of wax on her bright red car.

that bombs were going off while the show was going on and Bob Hope would turn to the chorus and tell the gals: “Keep smiling…keep dancing!” This personality-plus 101-year-old was off to walk down her street in NYC. It was her habit to greet people along the way…This activity was her means of staying active and mingling with people that keeps her a young 101-years-old! ADIRONDACK CHAIR COLLECTION GETS ITS YELLOW CHAIR A treat for passers-by at 20839 West River during good weather is a line-up of rainbow colored Adirondack chairs in the side yard of Robert and Carla Mason. When Carla married Robert in 2014, she brought over from Wyandotte her collection of Adirondack chairs that sat by her pool. Now they grace their home on Grosse Ile but the collection was missing a yellow chair. She finally found one at Ace Hardware and now has a full compliment of colorful chairs. WHOOPS NEEDS CORRECTION In my last column I mentioned that Ethel Vorce was a leading Suffragette and was instrumental in the passing of the right for women to vote in 2020. Of course, it was 100 years earlier in 1920. It’s in 2020 we women will celebrate 100 years when we finally could legally vote. I offered my husband Jack as a proofreader for the Grosse Ile Grand. He’s a retired business teacher who in his career proofed thousands of typing papers--when students took typing on typewriters. He was eagerly accepted as proofreader of the G.I. Grand and will catch those little “whoops” that might sneak into its publications before it’s printed.

Set Sail With Grosse Ile Country Club

By Sarah Hemsworth One boat competes for the Grosse Ile Yacht Club this summer. Meghan Dieball ‘19 and Ian Reimel ‘19 attended six regattas all over Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania; they took home the trophy at each regatta. “We have a lot of fun because we have the opportunity to sail every weekend and meet new people. Having a good friend as your teammate throughout the whole summer is great too and I cannot wait for Nationals,” said Reimel. Nationals will be held Aug.

DIVE IN WITH GICC

By Sarah Hemsworth Grosse Ile Country Club swim team made a splash in the summer meets. Beginning June 27 the team beat out Detroit Yacht Club with a combined score of 634-530; moving on to defeat Edgewood (617.5-535.5) on June 29. During the first home meet on July 6, GICC out swam Western (794-469.5), giving the team a 3-0 streak. A loss against competitors Oakland Hills (665 OH-575 GICC) and Dearborn (583 Dearborn-574 GICC) did not stop the swimmers’ from performing well in the 50 butterfly, 100 IM, 50

RARE INTEREST EARNS GIHS STUDENT A SCHOLARSHIP Grosse Ile High School senior Kara Parent earned the GI Nature & Land Conservancy scholarship in 2017 for her essay on this teenager’s unusual interest: toads. As she stated in her winning essay: “One of the activities I do every spring is raise American toads. They are crucial to the Grosse Ile ecosystem for insect management. I noticed a few years ago that toads were often deformed. I did a small experiment using pond water where I collected tadpoles and another group

where I used clean, fresh water to raise tadpoles from the same pond. What I found was that from the group raised in the pond water, I got deformed toads. The group with the clean water had no deformities, I’ve also seen a sharp decline in the amount of toads in my yard, so every spring I raise about 200 of them and release them around the island. It is a simple act that gives back to the ecosystem.

freestyle and 50 breaststroke. The team attended the swim finals at Detroit Golf Club on July 28-30.

In 2014 Haley Eblin had entered the VFW’s annual essay writing contest, “The Voice of Democracy.” That year’s theme was “Why Veterans are important to our Nation’s history and future.” Her essay was chosen as the local winner, and most of her competition was from seniors. David Dyer had seen something very special in her writing during the selection, but couldn’t identify what that something

was. He invited her to attend the next creative writers club meeting. This sparked an early interest in writing for Haley Ebling, who has now been published in a number of newspapers about southeast Michigan. In August of 2016 Haley asked David to write a letter of recommendation for her. In about one month from now she will be leaving for New York and Syracuse University.

A&R Music is proudly celebrating 40 years in business this year. The business began when Business Partners, Atam Bedikian and Richard Cieslowski, noticed a need for an additional music store in the area. They sell a large variety of musical instruments, printed music, and various music supplies. They even have a knowledgeable teaching staff in all instruments from a to z. Richard Cieslowski is most proud of the impact they have had on Southeast Michigan. “Many of our original customers have even returned to introduce their children and grandchildren to the world of music through our store.” Their main focus is on supporting local school band programs in Southeast Michigan, this includes renting to beginning band students and visiting local band directors. Amongst their knowledgeable staff is an expert repair department that is second to none. Whether you are a starting student or a well versed musician, A&R Music promises to put your needs first. Paint the Town Red In good homecoming spirit, and to breath some life into our downtown district, the island will hold a weekend long celebration on Macomb street this fall. YOUR BETTER HEALTH

Adult Health & Fitness How many times a day do we see in print ads or hear on the radio and television that the earlier you begin investing in a financial retirement account, the better you will be positioned when the time comes for your retirement? Of course what they are talking about is money and it is a fact the sooner you begin saving, the more you will have when retirement By Dr. Michael Concessi, arrives. In fact a Grosse Ile resident the same hold true for your health. The sooner you begin investing in your health savings account, the better shape you will be in for retirement! And the best way to invest in your health is through exercise and diet. I pointed out the benefits of exercise in the previous article on Senior Health & Fitness, but it is worth mentioning again. Exercise has been shown to boost your immune system, thereby preventing or reducing the chances of disease and the pain and symptoms associated with it. It helps to boost your energy, protect your heart, and maintain your weight. It has also been shown to improve one’s memory and decrease depression. Exercise for adults 20-50+ years of age should be a balance of endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. Preferably, all four types of exercise should be included in a healthy workout routine. Cardio/Endurance training should consist of 3-5 times a week for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. It is important to achieve your Target Health Rate or (THR) and maintain it for a minimum of 15 minutes. To determine your THR, first determine your Maximum Heart Rate. The formula to calculate this is 220 - Your Age = Predicted Maximum Heart Rate. The THR would then be 60%80% of the Maximum Heart Rate. Tone/Strength training builds muscle mass. Allow at least 3 times per week for a minimum of 45 minutes. For those with time constrains, circuit training, which consist of endurance and strength

training will allow you to get through a well-rounded routine in a shorter period of time. Remember proper form and posture is more important during lifting to prevent muscle recruitment and injuries. Consider adding some Plyometrics exercises, also called “jump training” to your strength training routine. This form of exercise adds dynamic moves such as jumping and hopping. These exercises help build strength as well as flexibility in the muscles. If performing cardio and strength training back to back, studies show that performing strength training first and cardio training after will result in a better strength training workout than if reversed. Flexibility training can be done in the form of warm-up and cool down activities. These help keep the ligaments and muscle tendons flexible and joints freely moving through a full range of motion. This in turn will aide in reducing the frequency of injuries. Balance training exercises can be done every day or as many days as you like and as often as you like. Preferably, 3 times per week will help improve posture, balance and stability. Tai Chi, Yoga, balance balls and one leg balancing exercises are all excellent methods. The best investment in life is not in gold, silver, bonds nor stock, but in your health and the best way to do that is through exercise and diet. RETAIL LANDSCAPE UPDATE All is not Well in Paradise; We Can Fix It!

T

he older I get, the more I become aware that age breeds resistance to change. For the record, I LIKE change. I don’t believe in change for the sake of change, though, and when powerful forces such as the ignoring of monopoly law and other predatory enabling, some change has serious repercussions that causes permanent damage. America has a problem these days By Peter Rose of vacant malls, or malls and stores you can tell are soon to BE vacant. I pointed out in other columns that we come to this state of affairs by way of the explosion of national chains with NYSE funding that provided developers with an insatiable demand for more and more space as the retail industry in the USA grew to have about 23.6 square feet of retail space per person in the country. This means that we have on the order of 7,625,000,000 square feet of retail space in the USA. The UK has 4.6 per person ... Less than a fifth of ours. Australia has 11.1 sq. ft. per person, less than half. Japan is about a sixth of ours. The USA alone has built so much infrastructure, to supply a far-too-small demand, making price the primary differentiator among competitors, and leading to collapse when the tail winds slow, allowing the following wake of the motor boat, so to speak, swamping the ship. A stupid strategy. 500 national stores are closed or announced to be closed this year alone, and thousands more will follow. Those closures create a real problem of real estate development that is not well suited for anything else, leaving white elephants everywhere, boarded up and blighted, depressing surrounding property values. There ARE good things happening. Wyandotte, for one, is a city enjoying a resurgence that is beautiful to be a part of. The big thrust, though, is bars and restaurants. It’s happening elsewhere downriver

as well ... investment in this sector by independents is impressive, and DOES inform that a rebirth of independent retail is also possible. Yet right now, there is virtually NO such investment or interest in retail, and no signs on the horizon that anything is changing on that front. As I think I may have made clear, Amazon rankles me in particular. Michigan just gave them $5 Million to build a new distribution center, because of the lure of 1,600 new jobs. Keep in mind that each job there equates to the loss of 3 - 5 retail jobs. Smart move, Michigan? But people don’t see that buying direct from stores or websites like Tommy Bahama also rob local independent stores as well. Brands have become our competitors, too, siphoning off as much as they can to get the business directly. They aggressively market on-line and through direct mail and other means, including one of the biggest scams: Outlet stores at Outlet Centers. (The Ralph Lauren Polos you buy at an outlet are NOT the same as the ones you buy from traditional resources.) Things ebb and flow, to be sure. I didn’t see the collapse of national, either. Malls were here to stay in a big way. Now, not so much. In this environment, then, keeping indie stores from closing is important, because the odds are so slim that they will come back or find new replacements any time soon. We can’t get Mulias and Elias back or replaced, and just imagine Trenton today with that bustling department store. We all have to see loss as something we can prevent. We have to see it as OUR responsibility. Our choices as individuals become a community’s collective actions, and shape the future economic health of our cities ... on purpose, by design and intent. Not just as an “oh-by-the -way” thing, but because we all understand that we can easily become a modern day Del Ray if we don’t. Indie stores alone offer something more and different than clicking a mouse button. If you agree, decide to keep those options!

There were eight Machus eateries, with the Red Fox best known for fine dining.

Ronnie Padmos of Trenton shares her copy of the restaurant’s popular Red Fox Salad Dressing, in which she uses ½ instead of 2/3 cup sugar. MACHUS RED FOX SALAD DRESSING ½ cup apple cider vinegar 2/3 cup ketchup 2/3 cup chopped onion 2/3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1 scant cup canola oil Add vinegar, catsup, onion, sugar, salt and pepper to blender or food processor and blend until onion is pureed. Reduce speed and slowly drizzle in oil until mixture emulsifies. Store in refrigerator.

Easy favorite If you like kidney bean salad, consider trying my easy favorite from the ‘70s. EVELYN’S FAVORITE KIDNEY BEAN SALAD 2 16-ounce cans red kidney beans ½ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped petite sweet pickles or gherkins ½ cup mayonnaise 2 ½ teaspoons dry mustard 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 3 or 4 tablespoons milk 3 hard-boiled eggs, sliced (reserve slices to decorate) Drain and rinse kidney beans. Downriver Auto Detailing was created for a certain kind of car owner. The kind of car owner who shows a certain kind of passion for fine automobiles. That same passion inspired the owner of Downriver Auto Detailing, Jay Cucinella, to preserve some of the most classic and iconic vehicles not only in the Motor City, but all throughout the U.S. “We really pride ourselves on doing great work” said Jay Cucinella, “My uncle and I check every single car before it leaves to make sure everything is up to our standards. And if people ever have any issue or question, they can always come to us. We pride ourselves on being the best Downriver.” Detailing and paint reconditioning is a true art form that is appreciated only by a few. And when performing art, only the finest polishes, waxes and equipment are used together with the best techniques to perfect your car and bring out it’s most awe inspiring finish.

You Should Have Grabbed Your Grass Skirts By Sherry Evans On Wednesday, July 19 fun was had by all at the second annual Water’s Edge Luau. If you were not there you missed it! The pool area was transformed into a Hawaiian Paradise beautifully decorated with lights, flowers and palm trees; setting the mood as if you were on an island somewhere far away without having to travel far. Families were enjoying photo opportunities with surfboards, totem poles and oversized flip-flops. Meanwhile others were sitting under umbrellas enjoying the food and music. The kids were busy with the pool games and even had a water balloon fight that I even got in on (soaked that is). Lots of family fun to be had, there was definitely something for everyone! Make sure you put this event on your calendar for next year!

CONTINUED from page 15 Well the end of the story is this: the next morning I rang Krista, explained my dilemma, and said I’d like at least one of those six errant chairs back. With her permission, this “Indian giver” (pardon the incorrectness) would re-claim a fraction of his heritage, mend the chair, polish, reupholster, and place it before my desk, where once upon a longago it stood, occupied by a now-gonebut-still-clearly-familiar company of beloved ghosts. When I informed my wife of my intention, Dori looked at me, shook her head and said “Okay, but just one chair, all right?” I nodded my assent. And per the plan, that afternoon I drove back to Manchester, was met by Krista, and loaded up one somewhat grimy, dusty, time-tested armchair. And thus did it make its journey from one island spot to another and then another and before that Harper Woods and before that Olympia Street in Detroit—and before that—who knows?

But it wasn’t until last night that I had my revelation. The voice inside my drowsing head said to me “You know, those chairs all belonged to your grandmother.”

So it is that at least one more ghost has come to reside now at “Gray Gables.” And now that lone chair proudly represents and reminds of its absent fellows, who by this fall with any luck will make their dramatic debut on the Open Book’s stage. Is there a moral here? Only this: on some or rare occasions, one man’s trash may prove to be another man’s grandma’s dining room chair. So I pray you, keep your eyes, your minds, and especially your hearts open to the possibility that something of the past always needs our protection. And that, my friends, is a lesson I just compelled myself to re-learn.

Simple Pleasures by Gail Albin Recently during a steady rain in the faint light of dawn, I sat on a wicker rocking chair on my screened porch. I enjoyed a cup of coffee and felt great pleasure. The rain sprinkled down on the nearby pond. Many animal creatures also were beginning their day. I hadn’t bought a ticket or traveled for hours. I was at my own home. Still wearing pajamas, I felt total comfort. I regarded this event as a simple pleasure that brought boundless joy. I asked many people to tell me about a simple pleasure. Here are some answers: • Grandchildren • Reading a good book • Watching children play • Doing a crossword puzzle • Watching geese families by the pond • Playing cards with friends • Going for a bike ride • Gardening

• Watching birds at feeders • Attending outdoor concerts • Reading the Sunday New York Times Newspaper • Playing with a happy baby • Sitting on a bench watching people go by • Going to bed with clean sheets • Going to the gym when it is not busy • Playing with kittens • Watching a favorite show with friends We are blessed to live here on Grosse Ile, and that we can enjoy these simple pleasures. Life is good

Here’s 7 Easy Ways to Get Organized

If your home is looking cluttered, messy and in desperate need of organization, take a deep breath. There are plenty of ways to organize your home without spending a fortune. You can spend a few dollars here and there on storage By E. Ann Redfield products at your local home improvement store. The key is to get what you don’t need out and everything you do need in its place – somewhere that’s manageable and easy to reach. Here are some quick tips on getting your house in shape:

1

Get rid of unnecessary items. Go through every room in your home – garage, basement, bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, etc. – armed with boxes and trash bags. Separate the necessities from items you don’t need or use anymore. Donate usable items to people who can use them. Giveaway, recycle or put everything else in the trash!

2

Start sorting. Once everything old and unused is out, get everything else in some semblance of order. Cluster items like books, clothes, shoes, linens, etc., grouping like with like.

3

Containers are your friend. Find ways to put smaller items like shoes, books and linens in containers, when possible. By putting them in storage bins and boxes, you will always know where to find and put them. It’s also easier to store them in easy-to-manage containers, especially if you want to put shoes in bins underneath your bed or winter clothing on closet shelves when it’s summer.

4

Group by family member or season. If you’re sharing rooms or common spaces, color code and label areas and bins so you’ll always

know where clothes, toys, and other items go. In situations where you need to label by season, you can use colors like pink for spring, yellow for summer, and so on. This is especially useful for storage bins with seasonspecific clothing and shoes.

Weddings Graduations Showers Birthday Parties

5

Use racks and holders. Racks are especially useful for shoes, spices, tools, office materials and so forth. Make use of them in the entryway, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom to hold coats, hand towels, curling irons and the like.

6

Don’t forget about small items. Assign your small items – office supplies, keys, phones, etc. – a specific storage space. n Keys: Hang on hooks near the front door or by the door to the garage.

n Phones: Store in a linen pocket on a hook by the door. (Some have a hole near the bottom for the charger to go through). n Office supplies: Organize in a drawer or keep a basket atop a desk or table to fit pens, staplers, and other assorted items.

7

Always label! This cannot be stressed enough. Labeling prevents clutter, and it should be enforced in areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Knowing where certain items go at all times puts in place a regulatory practice and cuts down on the misplacement of everything from medicine to spices and pots and pans. This can all seem overwhelming, especially if you live in a large home and have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years. If you prefer, you can hire a professional organizer to come in and help you with the process. The main goal is to get the clutter out and turn your home into an organized, clean oasis for the whole family.
