Past Citizen of the Year award winners have included scout leaders, PTA members, public service individuals, church goers, youth,

Each nomination is carefully reviewed by a selected committee of the Grosse Ile Rotary Club members who search for those making our island a better place and whose volunteerism encourages others to become involved in community activities.

The recipient will receive the award at a banquet on May 19, 2022 with past recipients, Rotarians and honorary guests in attendance. Rotary then

asks the entire Grosse Ile community to help them honor the selected Citizen of the Year as the Grand Marshall at the annual Island Fest parade on June 4.

Celebrating Earth Day

Friends of the Detroit River to hold Lower Detroit River Cleanup event The Friends of the Detroit River group is hard at work planning for this year’s annual spring cleanup, which will be in celebration of Earth Day and the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. On April 23 from 9 a.m. until noon, FDR staff, board and volunteers will gather at Trenton Rotary Park to clean up litter and debris that has accumulated over the winter months around lower Detroit River’s shoreline parks and islands.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the park for an orientation then be split up into cleanup groups to go out in boats on the river. For the folks that would prefer to stay on the mainland, don’t fear, there’s still plenty of impact to be made by helping to clean up onshore areas!

We hope that these two important events will encourage volunteers to show their appreciation for our precious natural resources by celebrating Earth Day with us and

This cleanup event will be held in partnership with the Detroit River Coalition (DRC) and the Great Lakes CleanUP. The Detroit River Coalition members will be kicking off Earth

Day with an art exhibition at the Belle Isle Aquarium, local artists will be featured in the exhibition and the art will follow an environmental conservation theme. The exhibition will be made available to the public from April 22-24.

Along with the art exhibition, the DRC will host seven cleanups on April 23. The DRC’s Canadian members will be hosting a cleanup on April 9 and a Tree Planting event on April 24. If you would like more information on DRC events, head to detroitrivercoalition.com.

Township Board votes unanimously

Douglas Carmack is named new Grosse Ile Police Chief Bill Stevenson At a special meeting held on Wednesday, March 16, the Grosse Ile Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously on two separate motions to appoint Lt. Kenneth Pelland, Deputy Chief of Police, and Sgt. Douglas Carmack, Chief of Police, effective immediately.

Trustee Mike Jurecki, who serves as the Board liaison to the Police Commission offered the motions, and said, “The history, everybody knows it. Everyone knows that for the past year or so, the commission has done what it is supposed to do.

It’s brought forth the best candidates it possibly could, based on what we felt was in the long term best interests of the community. A lot of those recommendations have been turned down. As a commission, it’s incumbent upon us, based on the parameters the Board puts upon us, to come up with the best possible alternative that they may accept.

“With the combination of these two action items, Grosse Ile Township will be in a great place.”

Chief Carmack is a 1996 graduate of Ferris State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Carmack has been with the GIPD since 2001, serving as a road patrol and community policing officer, DEA task force officer, active shooter instructor, marine unit boat captain, and road sergeant. He has been in charge of the Reserve and Cadet Unit since 2018, managing that element supporting community safety.

He has received numerous commendations from the National Association of Police, the United States Attorney’s Office, and the

F.B.I. for his supervision of Narcotic and Diversion Investigations.

According to his vitae, Carmack played a major role in “the capture of several of the most wanted narcotic producers, arms traffickers, money launderers, and murder suspects. Further, he supervised and managed a budget of over two million dollars, authored a 180 page, 36 location search warrant, utilizing the Incident Command System to indict 24 suspects. The operation involved more than 400 law enforcement officers from state and federal agencies over a three year period.

Thousands of pounds of evidence and several million dollars of currency and assets were seized in the investigation.”

For this investigative and supervisory work, he was interviewed by 60 Minutes.

During the COVID-19 height, Carmack served as interim police lieutenant, a command position he maintained until his appointment as chief.

And when the pandemic swept through the police department, leaving only nine officers and one dispatcher, Carmack stepped up as interim police chief. He even had a month as the acting administrative secretary.

Chief Douglas Carmack and his wife have been Grosse Ile residents since 2003, and have two small children, Deputy Chief Ken Pelland is the senior officer of the GIPD, with more than 29 years of service, and, too, has an extensive resume and stellar commendations.

Most residents know him for his outstanding work in establishing and delivering service through his community policing programs. Pelland has been

Pelland the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer for more than 20 years. He was instrumental in the Party

Patrol Task Force, which grew statewide in efforts to deter underaged drinking and parental responsibility.

He has been the School Resource Officer responsible for coordinating emergency drills, active shooter protocols, crisis response teams, and Safe Schools community events.

As the “face of GIPD,” Pelland served as the public information officer for media contacts as situations arose.

Behind the scenes, Lieutenant Pelland has been a detective for 19 of his years with the GIPD. He has been the commander of the Downriver Mutual Aid Hostage Negotiation Team, and is a member of the Staff and Command executive leadership team in the training, supervision, and management of the Grosse Ile Police Department.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in almost every facet of policing within the department – from road patrol, traffic investigations, collaborating on policies and procedures, finance, and administration.

Pelland has written, and Grosse Ile Township has received more than $1million in grants to enhance equipment and operations, contributing to Grosse Ile named as “the safest community in Michigan.”

Whatever the case, the new executive team of Chief Douglas Carmack and Deputy Chief Kenneth Pelland have another immediate challenge.

The Township Board, at their March 28th meeting voted 4 to 3 to adopt a budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year that would reduce the GIPD membership from 24 to 23.

The move would also reduce the number of road patrols on Grosse Ile from three to two.

I was asked to write an article introducing myself to members of the community who may not already know me. My name is Doug Carmack and I am the new Chief of Police for Grosse lle Township.

I have been working as a law enforcement officer for over 25 years, with the last 21 being with the Grosse lle Police Department.

Police Officers face many challenges and difficulties. These experiences have strengthened my awareness of the importance of community involvement. Grosse lle is not only where I work, it’s a place I call home.

Working on this Island for 21 years and being a resident for 16 of those years, has given my family and I such an appreciation for our community.

Growing up, my family moved several times throughout my childhood. We lived in New Jersey, Nebraska, Louisiana and ended up in Livonia, Michigan in 1984. I graduated from Livonia Stevenson High School in 1991, then continued my education by attending Central Michigan University. I later graduated in 1996 from Ferris State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

I began my law enforcement career in the summer of 1996 after graduating from college.

Law enforcement in the 90’s was much different than today.

The profession was returning to a

community-oriented policing but still utilizing past practices.

In the late 90s I had opportunities to have interactions with the Grosse lle Police Department. I learned from many officers at that time about how the department had a communitybased style and encouraged police to be involved in the community. I approved of that concept then as I do today.

I was hired by the Grosse lle Police Department in January of 2001 as a patrolman.

Throughout my career I have worked all three shifts and have taken on many different roles.

In 2006, I was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration as a task force officer to assist with local, state and federal narcotic investigations.

During my time with the DEA, I participated in many investigations resulting in the arrest of traffickers, confiscation of drugs and the seizures of currency. Portions of the forfeitures were utilized by the department to support day to day operations such as purchasing needed equipment and supportive training programs.

During my time there, I received experiences that can’t be replicated anywhere else. My experiences with the DEA made me very grateful to live in the kind of community that Grosse

Greenways/Open Space Commission moves forward Since spring has sprung, and the winter doldrums put behind us, the Grosse Ile Township Greenways/ Open Space Commission is looking back on the tremendous progress that has been made over the years, and forward to a future of exciting opportunities.

At their March meeting, the Board accepted the resignation, with regret, of Cliff St. Pierre as chair of the Greenways/Open Space Commission, a position he has held for 20 years.

During his tenure, the total Bill Stevenson protected areas of Open Space on the Island grew to its current 601 acres, all on the main island. Over the course of years, St. Pierre has helped guide the commission not only in property procurement, but in successful millage campaigns, educational programs, and partnerships with other conservation groups.

He and the commission have worked together to coordinate Open Space programs with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the State of Michigan, and the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy, and the Township Department of Public Services. He will still remain as

a member of the commission.

The Greenways/Open Space Commission projects include the maintenance of the five existing trails in the Wildlife Sanctuary, Island/Ferry Woods, Parkway Woods/Playscape, Centennial Farm, and Meridian Woods. Further, the commission has offered the “Dump the Junk/Find a Treasure” public service events, as well as making recommendations to the Township Board about natural area improvements.

The goals of the Greenways/Open Space for the fiscal year, running from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 are the following: * Final remediation of Meridian Woods Drain to alleviate flooding in adjacent neighborhoods. * Complete final stages and preparation of Ferry Trails * Conduct two Dump the Junk Events * Review Open Spaces for possible procurement given the current balance of $150,000. * Introduce “Adopt a Trail, Adopt a Plot” program for community groups to monitor and maintain Open Space properties. * Coordinate efforts of Greenways/Open Space preservation as “Friends of Grosse Ile Natural Areas.” * Expand access to Thorofare Canal from Meridian Road cut-a-ways on both east and west side, across from Lowrie. * Work with Grosse Ile Township Schools in creating bat or owl house placements in select areas, and planting butterfly gardens in Open Space areas.

As we approach Earth Day on April 22nd, may we remember that “every day is Earth day.” By working together and everyone doing their part, we can keep Grosse Ile green and clean. And in the process, make our little corner of the world a better place to play, to live, to enjoy.

New scholarship, continued support, 80’s Party all on tap The Grosse Ile Educational Foundation has been busy this past winter, planning and implementing new initiatives to enhance the educational opportunities for both the Grosse Ile Township Schools, and the community at large.

Going “Above and Beyond,” is not just a slogan, but how the Foundation translates creativity to action – imagination to reality.

Bill First, excitement is growing Stevenson for the GIEF’s annual fundraiser to be held on Saturday, May 14th at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. After a two year pandemic hiatus, this year’s event is “A Totally Awesome 80’s Party,” featuring catered dinner, cash bar with specialty drinks, 80’s arcade games, raffle prizes, silent auction, and live music. You can dance to your favorite 80’s hits provided by the ever-popular, tribute band the Square Pegz.

Tickets for the Totally Awesome 80’s Party are $60 per person or $100 couple.

Sponsorships are available in four categories scaled with increasing perks: Best Song sponsor $200; Best Album $500; Best New Artist $1000; Lifetime Achievement $2500.

Secondly, the GIEF Board approved funding for a new scholarship for outstanding male scholar/ athletes at Grosse Ile High School. The GIEF/Steve Sims Leadership Scholarship will complement the original Sims award given to a female graduate who earned a varsity letter in either girls’ basketball or track and field. There is no specific sport restriction for the GIEF/Sims scholarship for boys. The scholarship will be awarded this May at the annual Senior Honors assembly.

Thirdly, the GIEF has recently provided grants for the following: “Bookworm” Vending Machines at Meridian and Park Lane Elementary schools. A K-2 reward program and grades 3-5 positive behavior program to put more books in students’ hands and tap into their love of reading.

Fourthly, the GIEF Board approved a revamping of the grant forms for Great Idea Teacher MiniGrants (up to $2000), Foundation Grants (over $2000), and Community Grants ($500 and above).

Soon, the new grant forms will be available in an easier online, fillable format.

Since 1995, the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation has been committed to funding lifelong educational experiences for the students and families of Grosse Ile. More than $1.5 million dollars have been awarded to date. The funding for these programs and resources would not have been possible without the generous support of their donors and sponsors.

Wired Devils have great 2022 competition season

What has been a great season for the Grosse Ile High School Robotics Team got a whole lot sweeter on March 19 when the Wired Devils placed 5th out of 37 teams at the district competition hosted

by Churchill High School in Livonia.

The team also earned the distinction of scoring the most points for best climbing robot.

Continued from page 14 pairs high school students with adult mentors to collaborate, design, and build a competition robot.

Each January a new and challenging robot game is introduced at the international kickoff.

For six days a week, four hours a day since the beginning of the year, the Wired Devils applied the knowledge they had acquired in math and science classes.

With guidance from team mentors, the students followed the engineering process of brainstorm, design, prototype, build and test.

The students used extensive tools, equipment, hardware, software, electrical and mechanical parts.

They designed and built an imposing precision robot for competition.

The 2022 robot challenge is to score balls in the upper and lower hoppers and to climb, then traverse a series of overhead rungs in various heights.

Each game is played in 2-1/2 minutes. Each robot is pre-programed for the first 15 seconds to score without guidance from drivers. The remaining 2-1/4 minutes, the drivers control their robot to score points.

Our Livonia District Competition was a twoday event where each of the 37 teams played in 12 matches to qualify for the 24 spots in the quarterfinals.

The 24 teams then qualify for the 12 spots in the semifinals. The 12 teams then compete for the top 8 spots.

The Wired Devils completed the semifinals and placed 5th out of the 37 teams, as well as winning the distinction of scoring most points for best climbing robot.

The 35-member team of Wired Devils belongs to three major groups, Robot, Outreach and Spirit.

• The Robot group is the largest, dealing with everything robot related.

• The Outreach group concentrates on community service.

The team plans to resurrect Safety Town this summer. Each year Robot Camp is provided for the three Meridian Robotics Teams. We also mentor the Meridian Robotics Teams throughout their competition season.

The team promotes STEM awareness at their Island Fest booth and parade each year. Wired Devils also promotes STEAM awareness at STEAM Night at Meridian and Parklane schools each year.

• The Spirit group designs and provides spiritwear for the team, including hats, shirts, stickers, buttons.

The Wired Devils recently competed in a district event hosted by Woodhaven High School on April 9 and the team has its sights set on the state

competition and then, the world championship.

Being an enthusiastic local retailer is still a thrill You might be of the mind that writing every month is easy for me. It is not.

But I do want to share that after so many years (50) in this clothing store gig (the only job I’ve ever had), I am still intensely in love with what I do.

Every aspect of it.

The apparel business is different from retail operations that operate from a just Peter in time model. It is Rose often disorienting.

My wife Janelle and I just came back from an abbreviated trip to Chicago for THE trade show of our industry (there are others, but nothing comes close to the scale and execution of the show that happens four times a year at the Merchandise Mart).

I’ve been attending “Stylemax” for perhaps 25 years now, or something like that. It has been phenomenal from day one, and it is far better now.

Truly, there is no better show for womenswear in the country.

But the show took place in midMarch. Spring is not really here, yet, right? And here we are, bending our brains over the fall/holiday season, and what to consider for that timeframe.

I’m not complaining, far from it. It’s one of the things I think I’m good at, reading the tea leaves, taking what I know now and projecting it forward to place orders now for something that won’t arrive until August-October.

There is no way I can convey the restorative experience of being in a city of the caliber of Chicago, deciding on a future (and current)

Friendly, happy waitstaff, engaging salespeople that actually know what they’re talking about make me far happier, make me buy. I learn from that every bit as much as the merchandise. snapshot of offerings for our road forward.

The process renews, puts wind in the sails, makes us look forward to the future (can’t wait for that stuff to come in!).

After 50 years, I am still so dependent on that renewal, still thriving in the environment that is created by the show producers, vendors, representatives, and fellow retailers from across the nation. It happens for the men’s business as well, where I learned my trade so long ago.

Without such shows, I simply don’t renew. Never recharge the batteries.

It’s not that I don’t like to rest with a vacation; that renews as well, but it’s totally different.

It’s not just the merchandise offered.

It’s the creativity of it all. The booth designs, the stuff that each maker deployed to express their take on the fashion world for people like me that take those ideas and emulate the best of them at the retail level.

I firmly believe that I am not all that unique in the way I react to visual stimuli. If my eye is drawn to a dazzling display of 50 colors of a cashmere popover, our customers will react the same way. I learn, I get ideas for our store, beyond the merchandise we select.

brands we shop could fill our stores on their own, it is how they show it, how they sell it that impacts me.

I might be the only one that says this: I love salespeople that know their stuff and share it. Enthusiasm, cheer, friendliness, seriousness, true product knowledge and competence all combine (or not) to compel me to buy from them. Most people I know shun them. Me. I’m eager to let them do their thing. Their “thing” is the thing.

And I will tell you that I never find that “thing” at national chain stores or restaurants. OK, not never, but rarely do I find sparks of any kind outside of the local and independent, where creativity lives, where it’s not just a job, it’s a life.

Friendly, happy waitstaff, engaging salespeople that actually know what they’re talking about make me far happier, make me buy. I learn from that every bit as much as the merchandise.

I am intrigued on these trips at restaurants, or just walking around. I steal ideas and emulate them or share them with folks that might affect change for the better in Wyandotte.

Green bike lanes, incredible lighting displays, cool tiles, the way a concentration of well-dressed people comes across – it all adds up to recharge. The potential for

improvement or revitalization is the spirit of independent retail.

It’s how I see my world. It’s not just my stores. It’s the sum total of all the stores, all the restaurants, creating an aggregate impression on visitors.

Benches, flowers, Christmas decorations, fountains, Italian market lights – I see it all, covet the ideas that might make for a better Wyandotte.

Creativity and boldness make the world go round, not necessarily money.

Localism is my middle name, anymore. feeding localism, doing my part to enable success for local places, passionate places, is fun and purposeful.

Paying attention to governmental support that nurtures new and existing retail, sets the bar for successful, vibrant, electric towns.

Towns that are strong enough to fight back against the homogenous nationalized faux retailers and restaurants are no accident. I pay attention to all the elements that come together to create a cool space that people feel drawn to, feel compelled to go where authenticity lives.

Businesses that know they have to exceed people’s expectations, governments that grease the skids for those businesses and also act to make for coolness through way-finding, flowers, parking decks and so forth, and a community of people that know the real thing when they find it – and make darned sure they don’t go away or fail – all collaborate to make our local economy thrive and hum.

Localism is the new black. Thanks for being on that page with me!

CULINARY CAPERS For the third time this century, Good Evelyn Friday, the Christian Cairns commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and Passover, the celebration of the emancipation of the Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt, will fall on the same date: April 15.

If you’re wondering what to serve on Good Friday, you can start with the traditional favorite Hot Cross Buns. I’ve already made two batches of Mom’s Best and piped them with a frosting cross to represent the crucifixion. They are in my freezer waiting to be served with coffee or tea.

Other Good Friday ideas are salmon patties, tuna salad, grilled fish, potato and corn chowder and macaroni and cheese, of course.

The following recipe is from the Taste of Home website.

MOM’S BEST HOT CROSS BUNS (Adapted) 1 package (1/4-ounce) active dry yeast 1 tablespoon plus ½ cup sugar, divided 1 cup warm milk (110 to 115 degrees) ¼ cup butter, softened 1/2 cup raisins 1 egg ¼ teaspoon salt, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg 3 ½ to 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in the milk. Let stand 5 minutes. Add butter, raisins, egg, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and remaining sugar. Stir in enough flour to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, 6 to 8 minutes. Cover and let rise until double, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 12 portions and shape each into a ball.

Place in a greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees about 25 minutes or until browned.

Remove to a wire rack to cool.

Icing: 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 teaspoon softened butter ¼ teaspoon vanilla 2 to 3 teaspoons milk Combine the confectioners’ sugar,

butter, vanilla and milk to achieve a piping consistence, and pipe an “x” on each bun.

Passover begins with a meal called the Seder at which matzos (unleavened bread) serve as a reminder of the hasty departure of the Jewish slaves from Egypt because there wasn’t time for their bread to rise. Other symbolic items at the Seder are a plate with a lamb shank bone, a roasted egg, bitter herbs, a green vegetable, sweet salad and salt water.

Matzo is a main ingredient in countless Passover dishes and desserts, including the following delicious sweet, which I recently enjoyed making, eating and sharing with friends.

CHOCOLATE TOFFEE MATZO CRACK 4 or 5 slightly salted matzos 2 sticks unsalted butter 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 12-ounce bag semisweet chocolate chips 1 heaping cup toasted chopped pecans ½ teaspoon sea salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with heavy duty aluminum foil and top with a sheet of parchment. Cover the baking sheet with the matzos, cutting and piecing to fit the pan.

To make the toffee, combine the butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan. Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly with a whisk until the mixture comes to a boil. (If it separates, keep stirring, as it will come together.)

Once it boils, continue cooking and stirring another 3 minutes until foamy and thickened. Immediately pour the toffee over the matzos and spread into an even layer with a spatula. Place the pan in the oven and bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until the toffee is crackled and bubbling.

Remove the pan to a cooling rack and scatter with the chocolate chips. When softened, spread chips into an even layer with the spatula and sprinkle with the pecans and salt. Refrigerate until firm, about 45 minutes, then cut into 2-inch squares. Serve cold. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

How two girls started a community newspaper I was a typical 13-year-old girl growing up on Grosse Ile with no idea of being a journalist for most of my life when my friend and neighbor Pat Pittman and I were hanging out in Heine and Dorothy Hochs’ living room.

The Hochs lived in our neighborhood and back in those days neighbors were very close and friendly. Heine was church editor of the Detroit News so when Pat and I complained “There was nothing to do on Grosse Ile in the summer,” he PAMELA A. suggested starting a kids’ newspaper.

FRUCCI We went to downtown Detroit with Heine and bought a small printing press (now in the historic museum as an antique!) and lots of type separated by letters in a large wooden box.

We came up with a name, The Ile Camera, with the subhead “By and for kids.”

For two years, until we got into high school and got busier, we published the paper every two weeks in the Hochs’ basement and sold it for 3 cents.

Afterwards, the Hochs took it over and published it as a community newspaper for 25 years when it was sold and resold and sold again until the last corporation dropped the Ile Camera in 2015 after 70 years.

I spent some time as feature writer for the old Ile Camera and was asked in 2017 to write two columns for a new community newspaper the Grosse Ile Grand: “Telescoping the Township” and “Listening in on the Island.” So when you add up the years, I’ve been covering Island news for 76 years!

Why all this background?

In the February Grand I wrote about a planter a bunch of us from the Island Beautification Committee and former supervisor Brian Loftus helped plant with flowers and shrubs at the entrance to Grosse Ile from West Jefferson in Trenton.

With all the construction for a new gas line by DTE Energy to Grosse

Ile going on now, the planter was destroyed.

I was assured by our township manager Derek Thiel that DTE Energy would replace the planter. However, I got a letter of complaint from a DTE employee that my column was “inaccurate.”

My response is that it wasn’t inaccurate, just incomplete.

What I left out in my column was the fact that DTE supplied the large stones that encircled the planter and also contributed a lot of the manpower to landscape it.

So, although belatedly, I would like to give credit to DTE Energy for their valuable help in constructing the planter.

Also criticized was my term “planter.”

It wasn’t a household-sized planter but a large-scale landscaped raised bed of flowers and shrubs.

Occasionally, even a “veteran” journalist like myself needs to be reminded to make sure to get all the facts right!

Also, things have been replaced and are looking good at the entrance to Grosse Ile. ‘Coney Boys’ Grosse Ile’s answer to The Philosophy Club Although they meet regularly to enjoy each other’s company and eat a favorite dish of coney islands at Sully’s Restaurant on Macomb, the Coney Boys don’t quite measure up to the former Philosophy Club founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia.

The Philosophy Club members were the intellectual elite of the time and could converse about science, philosophy, politics and other deep subjects.

Our Coney Boys converse, but maybe not on such a high level.

Founded by Gene Swift, the Coney Boys meet every Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Since Sullys is temporarily closed, they met at Lloyds on Macomb on Feb. 23.

Commissioner Joe Palamara has the right

phone book Some time ago I ran into a friend who worked in Washington D. C. and knew his way around. I shared with him how great Jimmy Carter turned out to be with his work with Habitat for Humanity and why he wasn’t that successful as president.

My friend’s answer was, “He didn’t have the right phone book.”

It meant he didn’t know who to call to get things done.

In comparison, our county commissioner Joe Palamara has the right phone book.

I called him complaining about a tree along West.Jefferson bordering Elizabeth Park whose trunk had split and half the tree had fallen over the remaining trunk.

It was an eyesore.

The next day, a tree company had taken down the tree. In his position as a county commissioner, Joe knew whom to call to get things done!

Local actor Max Gail spotted on Chicago Med Las Schmidke called me to say he had spotted a former classmate Max Gail on the television show Chicago Med. Max graduated from Grosse Ile High School in 1961, attended the University of Michigan and headed for Hollywood.

There he’s done both theater and TV, best known for his role in the show Barney Miller..

Grosse Ile Musicale Celebrating its 90th anniversary Since October of 2021, the Grosse Ile Musicale has provided top notch musical programs for its members and guests.

Coming up at 1 p.m., March 11 at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church will be the fifth program of their 90th anniversary season. Performing cabaret songs with accompaniment

by Doug Scott will be Olga Tsipis, soprano. Guest fee is $10.

The piano recital on Feb. 11, featuring Doug Scott playing without a sheet of music an hour-long program of Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, received

rave notices.

Adding to those notices came another from Jim Johnson, music director of St. James Church. He said that Doug “raised the bar” as far as his skill on the piano.

St. James offering music programs for the public to enjoy According to Jim Johnson, once every month they have invited the public to enjoy a music program from a variety of artists.

So far they’ve had the Grosse Ile Woodwind Quintet and the Seaway Chorale but 7 p.m. on March 12 in the chapel, they’ve invited Joann Farmer, band director of West Middle School in Taylor to present a program: “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Saxophone.” She was accompanied by her husband Bob, another talented musician.

Future programs include musicians from “Brassworks” of Ann Arbor to provide special music for Easter Sunday, April 17 at 10 a.m. in the main church; April 22-May 1, Artist in Residence: Ann-Helena Schluter (Swedish/German pianist, organist, composer, and poet); and on Sat., May 14 at 3 p.m. in the main church will be Dave Calendine playing on the organ “An Armed Forces Day Celebration – A Salute to Our Veterans.” (Dave is the house organist at the Fox Theater and Little Caesars Arena.)

Artists sought for Art Ambiance Show and Sale

After a two-year Covid absence, The Art Ambiance Show and Sale is back and we are ready to have a wonderful show!

The annual Rock CF Race returns to pre-pandemic form After a two year cancellation due to pandemic pauses, the Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon & Co. is back. And back with a counteroffensive filled with energy, excitement, and new hope.

On the bright, chilly morning of March 20, 2022, 1,107 CF Rockers from over 30 states, took to the pocked Bill Island roadways to Stevenson race the 13.1 mile Half Marathon, the 5 mile Run, the 5K Run/Walk, or the 2 Person Relay.

Not only were they running for fame or glory or personal bests, they were running for a cause much greater than themselves—to raise money and awareness for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Established in 2007, the Rock CF Foundation is “a community thousands strong, changing the face of what living with Cystic Fibrosis looks like, and giving those living with CF the tools not only to survive, but thrive.”

Its founder, former Grosse Ile resident, Emily Schaller was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 18 months old. As a child she dealt with multiple hospitalizations a year, growing up with the possibility of never seeing adulthood.

In 2011, the first Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon was run on Grosse Ile, and drew 1,600 runners and walkers. And just like the medical breakthroughs that have enhanced the lives of patients and families living with CF, the Rock CF Foundation has grown over the past eleven years, expanding its running footprint, race sponsorships, and even creating their own apparel line.

Rock CF has donated more than $1,000,000 for research in the fight against CF. Its story and successes have been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Forbes Magazine, the Atlantic Monthly, and Runner’s World

Gabriel Richard Catholic High School has been very busy over the past month. The National Honor Society held its induction ceremony for new members on Wednesday, March 16. Juniors took the SAT on Wednesday, March 23.

The annual Strides for Adam 5k was on Sunday, March 27, and despite the cold weather generated a large turnout.

The Gabriel Richard community is grateful for those who participated or volunteered at the Strides for Adam event.

Spring sports have started in earnest, with several teams claiming early wins that bode well for the rest of their seasons. Boys lacrosse in particular has had several critical victories throughout the past month. Aside from athletics, the Gabriel Richard drama club held its spring show, Once Upon a Mattress, on the weekend of April 1-3. The shows were well attended and the musical was a hit amongst many who were there.

The Honorable Judge Elizabeth L. DiSanto of the 27th District Court held proceedings within the school as part of the Court to School Program on Monday, April 4. This program is aimed toward increasing understanding of how the courts and government function, and help encourage civic participation amongst students.

The students at Gabriel Richard are looking forward to Easter break which will be April 14-25. Prom is scheduled to be held on Friday, April 29. The end of the year is fast approaching, which means summer vacation will soon be in sight, but until then Gabriel Richard’s students will be keeping their nose to the grindstone in order to successfully finish the school year strong by passing final exams, AP exams, completing projects etc. Spring has sprung at GR!

Potholes galore wreak havoc on car tires There are too many potholes on East River and other Island roads to count, but there’s a way to recover the expense of repairing or replacing a blown-out tire.

Two years ago I printed the information my friend Joyce M’Lott gave me when she had to pay for a new tire. She missed the deadline back then for reimbursement, but provided the information for future tire damage.

You have to send paperwork to Wayne County Risk Management Claims Division, 500 Griswold, 14th Floor, Detroit, MI 48226.

You can’t do it online since they ask to see the bill you paid, a photo of the pot hole as proof of the damage. They actually pay you for your expense of replacing or repairing a tire since a current victim of a pothole was recently reimbursed.

The oldest attendee was Joanne Florio, who went with Bob Hope when he entertained troops in the front lines during World War II. At 105-years old, she’s still “alive and kickin’” and got out on the dance floor with the younger crowd.

Ever since 1960, the ECW ladies group at St. James Church has staged a rummage sale that attracts scores of eager buyers from the Island and off-Island.

The whole church, except the sanctuary, is converted to a sales area.

People with usable discards bring them which are sorted into different rooms such as Christmas items, children’s clothes and toys, books, jewelry, household goods and lots of clothes racks.

They even have specialty rooms for antiques and fine clothes such as the French Room.

The rummage sale brings out volunteers from the men of the church who drive to pick up heavier items and work outside with furniture, bikes, suitcases and equipment.

The ECW ladies are grateful that the whole church gets involved in setting up and cleaning up.

They’re always amazed that the Sunday after the Saturday sales, the church is once more back to normal.

Although most of the items are reasonably priced, there’s a real deal the last day when you can walk out with everything you can pack in a brown grocery bag for only $2.

Those with items to donate should drop them off at the church beginning April 18.

The event will host 125 girls from the 19 Downriver middle schools for a day of STEM inspired seminars and activities. The event has been canceled the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The girls come for a day of immersion in STEM related activities presented by inspirational women speakers. The event is presented without cost to the girls, with all expenses covered through the AAUW organization, individual donations and sponsorships from Downriver merchants and companies. Grosse Ile Township Schools Athletic Director James Okler has announced the hiring of a girls’ varsity volleyball coach for the fall season of 2022.

Rebecca Kuehn will be the Red Devils’ new head coach and begin her duties in August.

Kuehn is a graduate of Allen Park High School, where she was a standout on the volleyball court.

She earned her associates degree at Henry Ford College, and is currently an undergraduate student at Eastern Michigan University, majoring in secondary education.

She began playing volleyball at the age of 10 and continued her mastery into college.

Coach Kuehn has had great success in coaching at Seitz Middle School, Riverview High School and with the Atomic! Volleyball Club.

Okler Kuehn is excited about joining the Grosse Ile program and said, “Coaching is one of my biggest passions. Playing volleyball and coaching has influenced my life, and the thought of helping Grosse Ile volleyball players become their best selves, both on and off the court, brings me much joy.”

Okler said, “GIHS is pleased to welcome Coach Kuehn to our staff, and we look forward to the upcoming season and continued success for our
