IN S TITU TION S _01 G r o wing Cir cles J O H N M C M O R R O UG H The In Formation / De-Formation / Re: Formation studio uses a research-based approach that works from the premise that buildings and institutions come into existence as parallel developments, and, if one is to work with the ambition of “liberating” institutions, o n e m u s t f i r s t s t u d y a n d u n d e r s t a n d t h e i n s t i t u t i o n ’s existent operations as a necessary pre-condition for any subsequent proposition. As implied by the studio name, I n -F o r m a t e t h e a p p r o a c h i s t h r e e - f o l d . T h e f i r s t a s p e c t , “ I n f o r m a t i o n , ” focuses on the gathering, filtration, and synthesis of programmatic data into configurations that address t h e n e e d s ( b o t h o v e r t a n d i m p l i c i t ) o f t h e i n s t i t u t i o n ’s D e -F o r m a t e v a r i o u s c o n s t i t u e n c i e s . “ D e f o r m a t i o n ” w o r k s t o m a r s h a l the extrinsic forces that operate on buildings (zoning and infrastructural constraints) into productive design criteria.

Re -F o r m a t e F i n a l l y “ R e f o r m a t i o n , ” e n t a i l s a c l o s e r e a d i n g o f t h e i n s t i t u t i o n ’s t y p o l o g i c a l h i s t o r y, a n d i d e n t i f i e s p o t e n t i a l s within the institutional lineage for new and surprising (i.e. “liberating”) configurations. The final result of the studio is a building, both in its geometric description (drawings, models) but also in logical arguments for its existence (diagrams and narratives).

T h e d e s i g n w a s b a s e d o n K e v i n Ly n c h ' s f i v e u r b a n elements: Path, Edge, Node, District, and Landmark.

These ideas were incorporated into different spaces within the building layout. Other important consideration included viewpoints for the various programs to celebrate the Chicago River Front.

The building is consist of 72 floors above ground and three underground floors. The Frame created between two "Legs" allowed the users to experience the sublime from the scale. The office and the residential tower have a slightly smaller footprint compared to the hotel tower to allow more space from the Northeast side of the site.

Including the first four floors on the ground and six floors of the "bar" includes the amenity programs to support and sustain the environment within the structure. The We s t s i d e o f t h e s i t e c o n t a i n s t h e s u n k e n p l a z a t o a t t r a c t pedestrians and drivers from the nearby river bridges.

Space along the river includes a wooden pathway and various verdant green spaces to revitalize the riverfront.

C A PS TON E Lux_Ho tel M ICHA E L K I M How will this project serve a good to the environment and people? This question was the first question that I asked myself. Architecture does not come from my desire or the others. It was about the group and people who will affect the designs that architects create. This project will have to consider the same. The Lux_Hotel is the gateway to the city and the campus of UIUC and located in the heart of the City of Champaign. It can not just be a meretricious structure but have to be both ostensible and programmatically attractive to the users.

The potential within the City of Champaign was enormous, where the infrastructure growth in the one of the fastest i n t h e c o u n t r y. A s t h e r e s i d e n t w h o l i v e d i n t h i s a r e a for more than five years, the entertainment system was lacking when there are many people crave for it. So, the ambition of creating the entertainment zones like the restaurants and shops were shown throughout the project.

INST I T UT I O NS_0 2 CO R N ER _ F O R ES T AN NA M A RI E BLI S S The library should function as a space for education, s o c i a l i z a t i o n , a n d c o m m u n i c a t i o n . H o w e v e r, t h e s e are the very basic factors of the character of the l i b r a r y. C h i c a g o i s t h e c i t y w h e r e n o t s o m u c h o f the sporadic greeneries are celebrated. The design emerged from the reminiscing the forest and shadows of the trees. The idea was to challenge a new idea of the integration of both urban and architectural design should be and find new opportunities within the design decisions. The intention was to create a very modern and chic version of the forest through the facade, while the programs inside create the valley like condition where the users travel through the crevasse like atrium space to access to the programs.

T E CH T O N I C O bs er v a ti o n Tower JEFF KANSLER The task of this project was to demonstrate the full understanding of the study of the stress, strain, and deformations in axially loaded members. Beam stresses such as direct shear and bearing stress, torsion, stress under combined loading were taken into consideration.

Along with the design of an observatory at the open terrain, each member of the structures were calculated and designed according to their conditions. Understanding of the intermediate level of structure is displayed through this s t u d y.

FINAL DESIGN

We began by generating a curved form from a series of rotating triangles that danced around the center of mass. next we added a fluted surfacing technique to introduce a misregistration between the fluted surface and the curved form. lastly we cut notches at regular intervals to create stackable and nested units that would come together in a unified whole.

DIAGRAM From each circle, the paths were offset from the each center.

The centers were offset to create the intersections of the paths to be different from the one another. The position of the circles is determined so that the each pot pieces will align the each circle.
