DANCE CLUB GIVES APPLAUSE TO A NEW-AGE CULTURE

When we worked on the interior design, it was important to realize how the current trend in Malaysia has been. Because the client’s target customers are rather young generations than older people. Today. Malaysia has gone through cultural transformation. Muslim culture had been dominant in the country for decades. However, after penetrating the western culture in recent years, the rooted culture of Muslim has been altered, and sexual expression in public space has been somewhat allowed. The restroom design is particularly reeecting the altered culture.

The restroom design in the club Rootz was diďŹƒcult to get approval from the client as well as the local juristic ti on. This is due to the Muslim policy that sexual expression is strictly prohibited. The design is intended to create a counter-Muslim cultural design that layouts both 300 half-naked male and female photos in the restroom of the club. We wanted to experiment to see how the younger generation perceives this design. Having the sexy photos throughout the male and female restroom, people in the club will enhance customers’ pleasure. The layout of the photos are strategically placed so that the images near vanity have lighter background to avoid showing water stain.

The male restroom is lled with 300 sexy female photos. One signiicant criteria in choosing the appropriate images is that they need to be international. This means dierent ethnicity can be more appealing to various customers. Finidng right images of male was much harder than we expected.

DESIGN COMMUNICATION OFFICE

CONSTRUCTION The Building was constructed in 1909 by Albert Held and used as the second largest warehouse in Spokane’s Central Business District. The building structure primarily consists of a series of the wood column, beams and brick wall, and they are well preserved to be reused. CONCEPT STATEMENT The contrast in forms emhasizes the relationship that designers have with the creative process. Lines are designers, and the central object is “creative ideas”. The arms of desigrer donot know any borders and continuously seek further creative potential. DESIGN INTENT The design is aimed to support the creative activities, collaborative teamwork, and create a relax, comfortable, but also professional working environment.

BORDERLESS DESIGN

The rst oor space is primarily used for the main production process to be held. The marketing department works preliminary design and passes on to the production department for completion of job. After acknowledging the work kow, ow, I came to mind that the design needs to be “borderlessness”It is quite often to see an open office sketching about the prospective design. The large conference room can accommodate maximum 10 people. these days, but considering the fact that the company deals with the creative works as well as professional business status, I needed to design a space which takes a well balance of the both factors. Therefore, there are a formal meeting room and inspirational drafting area where clients and designers can take books from the shelves and do some

CLEAR PROGRESSION TIMELINE OF DESIGN EDUCATION FRAGMENTS OF KNOWLEDGE

DO NOT SEEM TO CONNECT

COLLECTIVE KN0WLEDGE

IS FOR DESIGN APPLICATION

Each water bottle is a fragment. But when they are collected, a new form is created. Just like our design education, rst year of school’s education seems unconnected, but as we move on to next year, each fragment of knowledge starts to relate. The ower column in the beginning phase is closed while they are fully blooming near the exit. The design evokes memory that how the skills, knowledge cumulated.

VISUALLY INTRIGUING X SPIRITUALLY EVOKING

ISOMETRIC VIEW view from entry

The surrounding environment creates layers of lights through the wall of waterbottles. As you move through the model, you would notice the dierent designed elements start to lean each other and form objects. In design education, the given knowledge in earlier years can not be applied to actual design yet. Therefore, the space closer to

34

the end seems to have a comfortable head clearance, but actually the oating things become obstacles that you feel uncomfortable to pas through the area. At the end, you will be greeted by the whole structure thing that you have enough head clearance and width.

Gradual height changes in each object imply the growing knowledge through school years. Floating obstacles represent diďŹƒculties in design education as well as design errors. feuawoufhaweofuhawefoh Our interactive design is having a dialogue with participants to communicate what you see is what you have actually experienced in the timeline of design education.
