Below are a few tips and reminders to keep in mind the next time you hit the water on a boat or head out fishing. • • • • • •

Know your local fishing regulations (www.FWC.com ) 16 years or older, a Fishing License is required / 65 years or older, not required to hold a Fishing License Download App ‘Fish Rules’ – Know your fish species - Fines are assessed on bag and size limits Help maintain healthy populations of fish (Practice Conservation / Catch and Release) 16ft vessel or above must have a PFD (Personal Floatation Device – Type II – Throwable), a Sound device (Whistle or airhorn), Navigation Lights (Red & Green) and anchor Light (360 degree white light), appropriate paperwork (Boat/Trailer Registration), and multiple anchors onboard Follow minimal wake area restrictions – Slow speed manatee zones Report unsafe Vessels, pollution, and littering violations

When fishing • • •

• • • • • • • • • •

First person to the fishing spot has the ‘Right of Way’ in that zone If some one is hooked-Up near you, get out of their way (Reel-Up) Don’t ‘roll-up’, anchor, or set your trolling motor on top of other boats/vessels (Keep appropriate spacing between you and other boats/fisherman). There is plenty of open water/fish out there. No need to crowd others or motor towards those fishing. Simply make a wide pass around other vessels that appear to be fishing Don’t cast over anyone else’s line (Especially when they have a ‘Fish On’) Follow your bait, otherwise it will cause a tangle or get caught up in structure After you catch a fish or two, allow others to hop in your spot/honey hole Give forgiveness to the ‘Rookie/Newbie’ on board. Show them the way and educate them (Share techniques, approaches, strategies with others so everyone around you has success on the water) Don’t Judge other anglers. Fishing is for FUN, keep it that way Help marine life when tangled in fishing line -Remember to Reel, Remove, Release ( Visit www. MyFWC.com for tips on removing hooks and fishing line from marine wildlife) Always clean up after yourself and other anglers/boaters (i.e. fishing line, trash, floating debris, etc). Give back to others who may not be as fortunate or have the correct equipment Practice ‘Common Courtesy’ and use ‘Common Sense’ when on or around the water Always remember to have FUN! Nautic al Gifts Amanda Newcomb harvested a stud!! These are her words. Those who know me know how much time I have spent to achieve this. Whether it was just not the right time, or it was the right time but not the best shot or my buck fever gets the best of me. I got in the stand at 12:30, feed times showed a major at 2, I did not see a deer until 6:30. Yes….. I sat in the tree the whole time. Finally at 7:13, the stars lined up just right and after a few adjustments and a last minute decision, I got this stud!! I am still on cloud 9! My first archery buck, In velvet, green scores 176!!! Hell yeah!! A shout out to some amazing people who helped me get this done. First is my husband, for all the time, teaching and more importantly helping me control my nerves! You are my rock and I really appreciate you. My Kentucky family, Sam & Betsy Critchelow I never could have done it without you. My gratitude will never be expressed enough. Luke & Molly Beeler Critchelow for helping us trail him and get this big buck out of that bottom. Jack Critchelow for skinning and gettting him ready for the taxidermy. And to all the wives for putting up with all the shenanigans. I love all of y’all and thank you so much!

#Boat of the Month Caught Up Fishing Charters Captain Brian Imbrunone

386-689-7409

We're off to the Southern side of the inlet this edition, and are stoked to bring you our next vessel highlight! Docked at River Deck Marina in New Smyrna Beach in a sweet spot nestled off Riverside Drive, you will find Caught Up Fishing Charters. Whether you're looking to fish the intracoastal or head offshore, Captain Brian has the perfect set up to meet all of your needs. Just as the fall season brings a much needed break from scorching summer temperatures; our inshore fishing starts to really heat up and this time of year offering a host of opportunistic catches such as, red fish, tarpon, snook & flounder. Captain Brian Imbrunone began his charter career in Islamorada, the undisputed world capital of sport fishing. Spending his first couple of years as a Captain in the Keys granted him the opportunity to learn everything there was about the business in its hub, only adding to the knowledge he has accumulated after being an avid fisherman all of his life. After Hurricane Irma in 2017, he made the move back home to New Smyrna Beach to start his own company with the help and guidance of area Captain Fred 'Frenchy', appropriately known as 'The Fishing Guy'. Captain Brian has been enjoying the vibe ever since. Get 'Caught Up' on this 243 Everglades Center Console, powered by a brand new 300 horsepower Yamaha outboard engine. Recently upgraded, this vessel features a t-top for the much needed shade breaks, new RayMarine electronics, as well as new upholstery & ceramic coating to ensure all guests are as comfortable as possible. She is able to accommodate up to four anglers with 2 extra guests, for a total of 6 passengers. Captain Brian attributes his business motto to the actuality of the sport, a hobby that requires you stay 'caught up' (or up to date?) on all the changing influencers. From tides & pressures (?); all the way to finicky eaters & the preferred bait of the day, the fishing conditions are always changing and he enjoys the challenges it offers him daily. Being able to teach anglers how to target and land their respective 'fish of a lifetime' is something that is incredibly rewarding to him as a whole. In the spring you can find him enjoying his absolute favorite pastime, sight fishing for cobia that migrate up the coastline with giant manta-rays. He notes that for him it's like an adult Easter egg hunt, finding the fish and making the perfect cast that results in success is an adrenaline rush second to none. In the summer he is usually offshore, trolling & bottom fishing to fill the box with meat for each and every guest that steps aboard. Notably the Ponce Inlet area boasts a wide range of highly sought after offshore catches such as mahi, tuna, grouper, cobia, snapper, sailfish and much more! You are sure to enjoy yourself no matter the time of year or type of fishing you wish to do while you get all Caught Up!

Trips aboard Caught Up Fishing Charters include: 4/6 HR Inshore Trips, 4 HR Shark or Night Trips, 6/8/10 HR Offshore trips. SSFHMagazine Nov/Dec 2023 Page 26

FWC issues executive order to close recreational harvest of gag grouper in Atlantic state waters starting Oct. 23

At its October meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) issued an executive order to close recreational harvest of gag grouper in Atlantic state waters, including state waters of Monroe County. The 2023 recreational season for gag grouper in Atlantic state waters closed at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 23, consistent with the closure in adjacent federal waters. The 2024 Atlantic gag grouper recreational season will open at 12:01 a.m. on May 1, 2024, after the annual shallow water grouper spawning season closure.

Governor Ron DeSantis Announces 50% Discounts for Florida State Park Passes and FWC Hunting and Fishing Licenses

Discounts available for three months, from Oct. 14, 2023, through Jan. 13, 2024 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis announced the Great Outdoors Initiative to encourage Floridians to go outdoors and explore Florida’s natural resources, including our awardwinning state parks, vast recreation areas, and world-renowned waterways. As part of the Great Outdoors Initiative, Governor DeSantis signed Executive Order 23-209 (The Great Outdoors Initiative) directing the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to provide a significant 50% discount on annual state park passes and FWC Gold Sportsman hunting and fishing licenses. The Governor fully supports Floridians in enjoying our state’s natural resources and the activities that have become family traditions such as hunting and fishing. To learn more about the initiative and to purchase a pass or license, click here. Beginning Oct. 14, 2023, and extending three months through Jan. 13, 2024, DEP will temporarily offer Florida State Parks annual passes for families and individuals at a 50% discount, while FWC will be discounting its annual resident Gold Sportsman license, five-year Gold Sportsman license and Lifetime Sportsman license by 50%. “Florida is home to some of the best state parks, waterways and recreational lands in the country, and I encourage all Floridians to get outdoors, experience our extraordinary natural resources and enjoy our fundamental right to hunt and fish,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “And we are now making it more affordable for families to get outside and enjoy these wonders by offering state park passes and fishing and hunting licenses at sharply discounted rates.” “Governor DeSantis’ promotion of conservative resource stewardship is unparalleled,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Hamilton. “It is because of this leadership that we can get outside and still experience the real Florida firsthand. I encourage all Floridians to get outdoors and take advantage of this incredible opportunity.” “Florida remains one of the country’s top destinations for world-class fishing and unique hunting opportunities,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman Rodney Barreto. “I encourage families to take advantage of this incredible offer with a discounted license and enjoy the abundant hunting and fishing recreational opportunities our state offers.” Governor DeSantis is a strong supporter of every Floridian's right to hunt, fish and enjoy the great outdoors, as has been a tradition for generations of Florida families. Earlier this year, the Legislature passed House Joint Resolution 1157, which proposed an amendment to Article 1 of the Florida Constitution to guarantee the right to hunt and fish in Florida. This amendment will be included on the 2024 General Election Ballot for Floridians.

Fall is the time to exclude bats from your structures The Florida bonneted bat is federally listed as an endangered species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advises the public that fall is the right time to exclude bats from your home or other structures. Exclusion is not permitted during bat maternity season, which runs from April 15 - Aug.15. Exclusion devices allow bats to safely exit a structure without reentry and are the only legal and appropriate method to remove bats from your home or building. It is illegal in Florida to kill or harm bats. While the state’s native bats typically roost in trees, caves or other natural spaces, they are also attracted to human-made structures. Waiting until fall to exclude bats protects Florida’s beneficial bat populations by keeping them undisturbed while they give birth and raise their young, called pups. Bat exclusion is a multistep technique where all potential bat entry and exit points in a building are identified. To legally exclude bats, exclusion devices must be left up for a minimum of four nights and the low temperature must be forecasted to remain above 50 degrees during that time. Florida boasts 13 native bat species, all of which are both ecologically and economically beneficial. These include the federally-listed Florida bonneted bat and the tricolored bat, which was proposed to be federally listed last year. All of the state’s bats are insectivores, with a single bat capable of eating hundreds of insects, such as mosquitoes or garden pests, in a single night. Bats’ worldwide impact is felt in their capacity as pollinators, seed dispersers and fertilizers. The FWC suggests the following to aid native bat populations: Preserve natural roost sites, including trees with cavities or peeling bark.

Charter Prices VS D.I.Y.

Fishing charter prices are often looked at as being high priced. When you take the time to break down the actual bill though, you usually find that you're saving quite a bit of money going with a professional company. (See Chart above) The chart dictates the average area pricing on a small (under 20ft) skiff on short range (gas included!) trips. Long range trips do not include gas which can significantly impact the billing. Not to mention all of the top of the line gear all of our charter companies offer; which would send this bill skyrocketing into the thousands easily. At the end of the day the single most important necessity of a productive day on the water is the knowledge of its Captain, an ability not easily recreated in a do-it-yourself fashion.

Take the guess work out of your next fishing trip; book with one of our charters today! www.poncefishnetwork.com SSFHMagazine Nov/Dec 2023 Page 39

Catch a Florida Memory announces the winner of the Triple Threat Throwdown The Triple Threat Throwdown brought a record-breaking year to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Catch a Florida Memory program and a big prize to one lucky angler! Laura Nathan-Kadish has been drawn as the Throwdown winner and will receive a Bonafide SS127 fishing kayak fully outfitted with an accessory package from YakAttack and a custom shirt from The Florida Nomad.

After winning her second fishing tournament within 5 months, Mila Coco Goldys had won 2 bikes and decided to pay it forward and donated one of her bike prizes to a fellow junior angler, Mason! This pubisher is very proud of Mila she is not only a very smart and kind young lady angler, she is also giving. This is my goal for the Kids Outdoor Days to pay it forward and be appreciative of the blessings we are given each and every day! I am very proud of you Mila! She is also our cover girl for this issue.

To earn her way into this elite raffle, Laura submitted a Snapper Family Grand Slam during the Throwdown period of Jan. 1 through Sept. 5. She earned her Triple Threat Club status in 2020, when she first began participating in the program, and has over 50 submissions to date. “The Triple Threat Throwdown is an innovative and exciting way to engage and reward our anglers, and we are thrilled with its reception and record-breaking participation,” said Jessica McCawley, Director of the FWC’s Division of Marine Fisheries Management. “We can’t wait to see what next year brings with the second season of the Throwdown!” Hoping to get in on the action? Don’t worry! Triple Threat Club status is awarded all year long to anglers who qualify in all three Catch a Florida Memory programs. This means the angler has caught a Saltwater Grand Slam, a Saltwater Reel Big Fish and has submitted at least 10 species from the Saltwater Life List. Triple Threat Club members receive cool prizes, such as custom fishing apparel, seasonal prizes and entry into exclusive raffles including the Triple Threat Throwdown 2024, which will

run from March 1 through Sept. 5. Keep a lookout for more details early next year! Catch a Florida Memory’s saltwater angler recognition program rewards anglers for their fishing efforts while encouraging them to target a diversity of species. Anglers do not have to harvest their fish to be eligible for prizes and are encouraged to use proper fish handling techniques. New to Catch a Florida Memory?
