The Southeast largest 2 day Speckled Perch Tournament to take place on January 30-31, 2027 with a mandatory captains meeting on January 29th. All events to be held out of Highland Park Fish Camp in Deland Fl. Berkeley was raised in the DeLand area and never left. He retired from the Florida Dept of Transportation. Berkeley was an avid fisherman and hunter and believed that everyone, especially children, should have the opportunity to experience the great outdoors. He loved his family and had two grandchildren; his great granddaughter Berkeley is carrying on his name. His second home was the St. Johns River which he loved for its diversity of fish, as well as wildlife. He fished every day and when he wasn’t on the river you could find him at Highland Park Fish Camp just telling fishing stories. This tournament is not only to honor and remember Berekley but also for the community to keep the love of fishing and the outdoors alive!

Premier Fishing Locations and Tactics for Central Florida Written By: Captain Martin Goldys
As a local fishing guide, I take full advantage of Central Florida’s premier saltwater fishing across our diverse ecosystems. Ranging from the shallow inshore flats of the Mosquito Lagoon to the backcountry mangroves of the Indian River, extending to the extremely active Ponce Inlet area, we have a wide array of top-notch fishing locations to explore. Below I’ve outlined some of my favorite spots and species to target in central Florida. Don’t be afraid to explore outside of your comfort zone or join a friend who maybe fishing in a new area, zone, or region. I’ve learned a great deal from other experienced anglers who have included me in their personal fishing adventures over the years. -Mosquito Lagoon & Indian River: Known for shallow water sight-fishing, tailing redfish, and black drum schools. -Ponce Inlet & Sebastian Inlet: Very active jetty and nearshore spots for redfish, snook, tarpon, sheepshead, snapper, flounder, and big Jacks. -Coastal Surf & Beaches: Plenty of pompano, whiting, and mackerel opportunities from just casting into the surf. These are some of my favorite approaches to catching central Florida’s most desired species when on a charter or scouting spots for future trips. -Inshore/Flats/Mangroves: Freeline a shrimp into high current areas or try using a live shrimp under a popping cork to encourage more bites. Also try a paddle tail on a jig head around oyster bars and mangrove edges. -Inlets & Jetties: Place a live baitfish such as a mullet, pinfish, or pigfish on a Carolina rig near the bottom of the column to trigger bites from your larger ambush predators. -Tackle: Consider using a lighter setup when inshore near flats and mangroves. Bump up to a Medium or Medium/Heavy setup when fishing near jetties, bridges, or inlets. Try using a surf casting setup when targeting fish from the beach to allow for further casts. Regardless of where you decide to fish, always check current bag limits, slot sizes, and seasonal closures through the (FWC Website). myfwc.com
Remember that a valid Florida saltwater fishing license is required for anglers ages 16 to 64 when attempting to catch saltwater fish, crabs, clams, and other marine organisms. To obtain your Florida saltwater fishing license online, simply visit gooutdoorsflorida.com . Please understand you are not required to obtain a saltwater fishing license when fishing from a properly licensed saltwater charter boat. Reach out to Captain Marty with Reel Harmony Fishing Charters for the chance to catch a fish of a lifetime. We provide the boat, the rods, the tackle, the bait, the license, and the fish you intend to catch. We look forward to hearing from you and your party soon to book a fishing charter 386-679-0317.

Meet New Smyrna’s Newest Boat Tour
Narwhal How a Commercial Lobster Boat Got A New Life in New Smyrna Beach Declan Rogers and his dad, Marty, wanted to bring a new experience to visitors and locals alike, so they bought Narwhal, a 24-foot Eastern, from a commercial fisherman on the Pamlico River. Her classic lines, open deck, and 9-foot beam make her truly unique. She was a work boat and spent her time running crab traps, dragging oysters, and who knows what since her original build in New Hampshire. The boat was rough: dinged and dented from a life on the water. They spent months fairing, sanding, painting, decking, and rewiring the boat from back to front with the help of Christian Hauer.

Withlacoochee River and Lake Rousseau (Levy, Citrus, Marion, and Putnam counties) Features: Bass size and numbers
Lake Rousseau is an impoundment of the scenic Withlacoochee River. This reservoir forms a giant lake full of cypress trees, hydrilla, hyacinth, and pennywort islands. Located just west of Dunnellon, it is an interesting and dynamic system inviting endless exploration. The dam (a popular fishing spot) is at the west end, opposite the quiet, winding Withlacoochee River. Several boat ramps provide access to the lake and river. For more boat ramp information, see the FWC Boat Ramp Finder. Navigation lanes connect the two ends, taking you through wide-open water and secluded curving channels. Use extreme caution when venturing into these areas, as submerged stumps provide a constant reminder that the lake is a flooded woodland. Plastic worms or weedless frogs can be fished through these patches of vegetation, and topwater baits in areas of open water should tempt hungry bass. When fishing deeper water, live shiners or crankbaits fished along the edges of hydrilla should also produce bites. The Withlacoochee River in Florida, also known as the Crooked River, is the state’s fourth-largest river. North Central Florida FWC announces results of the 2026 Florida Python Challenge™ The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and partners announced the results and winners of the 2026 Florida Python Challenge™, an event intended to raise awareness about invasive species while engaging the public in Everglades conservation through removal of invasive Burmese pythons. Over the course of the 10-day event, 907 Python Challenge participants from 30 different states, as well as from Canada and Vietnam, collectively removed 280 invasive Burmese pythons from south Florida. A highlight of this year’s event was the return of Everglades National Park as a partner and one of eight official Python Challenge competition locations. This year’s Ultimate Grand Prize winner of $10,000 was Tom Rahill, who removed 96 Burmese pythons during the competition all of which were removed from Everglades National Park, contributing directly to Everglades conservation. The longest python of the competition was also removed from Everglades National Park, measuring 16 feet, 5 inches, and removed by Rahm Levinson. “The number of invasive pythons removed from the Everglades during the 2026 Florida Python Challenge is a major victory for Florida’s native wildlife and a testament to what can be accomplished through strong partnerships and public participation,” said FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto. “The 2026 Florida Python Challenge was a resounding success, made possible by the dedication of our staff, the generous support of our partners, the continued leadership of Gov. DeSantis and the commitment of the many competitors who participated in this year’s event. The 2026 Florida Python Challenge was hosted by the FWC and the South Florida Water Management District, working closely with partners at the National Park Service and the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.

Hunting Season Arbovirus School is back in session, summer is drawing to a close, and soon after Labor Day Florida’s hunters will be in the fields. But while hunters will be looking to bring home their bag limits, they will want to come home emptyhanded when it comes to tickborne diseases. Florida hosts many tick species, including the lone star, deer, and Gulf Coast ticks. The lone star is the most common human-biting tick in Florida. Florida ticks can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. A lone star tick bite can also trigger alpha-gal syndrome. Prevention Preventing tick bites is the best way to reduce the risk of tick-borne disease. Ticks are typically found in wooded areas or areas with long grass. Spring and summer are the most common seasons, but tickborne diseases can occur throughout the year in Florida. Ticks feed on the blood of animals and can spread diseases through their bites. Be Smart in the Woods To keep ticks from latching on in the first place, walk in the center of paths and trails and use insect repellent. Use EPA-registered insect repellents with one of these active ingredients: DEET Picaridin IR3535 Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) Para-menthane-diol (PMD) 2-undecanone When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Check Yourself After you get off the trail, perform regular tick checks on yourself, family, and pets. Use a hand-held or full-length mirror to check the entire body. Pay special attention to feet and legs, as some ticks are small enough to crawl through socks and into shoes. Hog Hunters Beware In addition to ticks and mosquitoes, Florida’s hog hunters should watch for Brucella, which is in feral hogs. Hunters can become infected with Brucella when open cuts or mucous membranes contact pig blood, raw meat, or organs during the butchering process. Prevention Practice good sanitation when handling feral swine or raw feral swine meat. Here are some tips: Avoid eating, drinking, or using tobacco when fielddressing or handling carcasses.
Use latex or rubber gloves when handling the carcass or raw meat. Avoid direct contact with blood, reproductive organs, and fecal matter. Wearing long sleeves and eye protection, and covering any scratches, open wounds, or lesions will help provide protection. Clean and disinfect knives, cleaning areas, clothing, and any other exposed surfaces when finished. Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Cook meat from these animals to 160 degrees or until juices run clear Symptoms The most consistent symptom of a Brucella infection is intermittent or constant fever. Other common symptoms include headaches, chills, arthralgia (joint pain), and weight loss. If you suspect an infection after hunting contact your health care provider.
