Dear Schechter Friends and Community,

I

am pleased and honored to again have the opportunity to communicate with you about Schechter – it being almost 25 years since my prior Annual Report to you as President. Back then and to this day, Schechter has imbued its students with a strong program of academics, Jewish life and learning, and values – its hallmark throughout its 57-year history. Many of its graduates have gone on to become leaders and significant contributors to their Jewish communities and society in the U.S., Israel and beyond. Back then, however, Brenda and I didn’t know much about any of that. In fact, we had moved to Brookline in 1972 so our children could one day attend its fine public schools. But when the time came to send our first kindergartener off to school, we decided to make an investment in our children’s futures. And in retrospect, it’s surely been one of our best. Few if any decisions are more important to the life of a family than where one’s children go to school. And for us, Schechter provided not only a great education for our kids, but it also provided our family with a community of shared values, traditions, ambitions and treasured friendships that became the bedrock on which our entire family grew together. Interestingly to us, it’s that same type of community that our kids are now seeking to replicate as adults in their own ways and communities. Because of my appreciation for all that Schechter has meant for my family and the greater community, I have been excited to come back to work alongside our superb and visionary Head of School (herself a Schechter alumna) to help steward the School’s future. And what a future it will be because of your support.

••

Today, Schechter is brimming with an energy, vitality, sense of purpose and camp-like joy at every level. Our Board is composed of parents alumni and community members who give selflessly and abundantly of their time, expertise, resources and heart to make Schechter an even better school. Our faculty includes many of the best veteran teachers of years past along with an exciting corps of more recent teachers who bring a fresh passion to their craft. The teachers enjoy coming to school every day to provide a strong program of academics, guidance and inspiration for the students. And how wonderful it is to see the kids enjoying learning in a culture that emphasizes kindness, empathy and teamwork even as it fosters intellectual curiosity, ••• •• self-improvement and the desire to improve our community and world. In short, today’s Schechter •• • seeks to know each child and to reach and teach the whole child. •••

•••

When my family first came to Schechter, Brenda and I knew that our generation of parents stood on the shoulders of prior generations, whose founding vision, fortitude and generosity had made a Schechter education possible for us. And so it remains generations later, now on all of our shoulders as generous supporters of the School. We have the ability, and I believe mission, to make sure that the Schechter of tomorrow becomes an even more outstanding 21st Century educational institution which remains accessible to all who seek it for their children. (Today, more than 60% of students at Schechter receive financial aid.) If we continue to do our part, Schechter will continue to produce graduates with the love of learning, the strong Jewish identity, and the values and self-confidence that will prepare them well to meet the opportunities and challenges of their future. It will also help ensure our strong pipeline of communal leadership for future generations.

Jewish life to foster joyful experiences rich in depth, purpose and meaning, and inclusiveness, specifically through our new approach to Zman Kodesh (sacred time) and our commitment to deep and meaningful learning in Tanakh (Bible), Hebrew and Toshba (Rabbinics). We remain committed to fostering a vibrant culture and community among and between students, faculty, staff, parents and the larger Schechter community both through programs like Yom Chesed, our day of service, and establishing and reinforcing cultural norms – like Respect and Kindness, Collaboration, Continuous Improvement and Personal Excellence. I’m also proud to share that we welcomed 63 new students to our Schechter community this past year!

••••••••••••••••• •• ••• ••

Our work is only possible due to support from our generous donors. Faculty and staff participation rate reached an all time high at 83 percent and the parent participation rate remained consistent at 77 percent! In total, 835 people gave to Schechter last year through our Annual Campaign, our Legacy Society and our Chazon Fund, which was established last year to accelerate Schechter’s strategic plan. The Spark & Inspire Gala in March 2018 was a celebration of Schechter’s past, present and future with 460 current and alumni parents, eighth grade students, alumni, grandparents and friends. As we strive to make Schechter an even stronger institution, your support is truly appreciated.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Head of School at Schechter and I thank you for your support and partnership. Todah Rabah,

Schechter is committed to providing tuition assistance to help make a day school education affordable to all its families. Over the past eight years, the percentage of students receiving aid has increased from 43% to 61% and the financial aid budget has doubled. In the 2017-2018 school year, the financial aid budget was $3,600,000 and the average award per student was $15,008. We believe that every family who seeks a day school education for their children should be able to access one at Schechter.
