A Note From Sue

General Manager Update

Welcome to Springtime at SSCC A lot of activities are on the March and April Calendar that you don’t want to miss! Our 15th Annual Chili Cookoff will be on March 9th. A new twist this year is a Bloody Mary Contest. Compete in one or compete in both. The winning Bloody Mary will become our standard and will carry your name! Sign up soon. We have Dubb and the Luv Machines to sing to us as we recover from all that good chili. Spring break will bring lots of opportunities for entertainment. Parent and Kids game night in the Simulators on the 13th, Kids’ Bingo on the 14th, and top it off with Parents’ night out on the 16th. We will entertain the kiddos while you take a much-needed break and have that date night in the Chophouse. Have you heard? Murder Mystery is coming back on the 23rd. Come to the Masquerade and see whodunit! The following weekend is Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt. WE are helping the Easter bunny get ready with all those eggs that will be hidden. Stomp is back as well as Bingo. Can we even top that month? We can try. Monday the 8th of April, we will be here to view the Solar Eclipse. Golf Tournament, short game contests, frisbee golf, bounce house and games for kiddos of all ages, both inside and outside. (Simulators, hint hint) We will have solar glasses you can use if you don’t have them. The rest of the month is filled with golf tournaments, kids’ activities, Bingo, Trivia, and a Friday night Pub Karaoke. Come play and keep reading those texts and emails so you will be in the know!

Golf Course Updates

Billy Huckabee, Golf Course Superintendent

As we move into the spring months, 2024 looks to be a great year for the golf course! We will have aerification completed and pre-emerge down for the summer, and for the first time we will have no restrictions on water! The spillway turned out beautifully, and we managed to fix some drainage areas too. As always, please self-police cart driving, ball marks and divot repair. All the best clubs I've been around have members that protect the property. Thanks for the help!

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR SET-UP CHANGES BASED ON THE CLUB YOU’RE HITTING? Setting up the same way with every club could be hurting your chances of making solid contact.

Driver When hitting with a driver, you should have a wider, more powerful stance. Keep your right shoulder down. Lay a club or alignment stick across your chest, and point the left side to the sky.

First, join us in congratulating the winners of the Icicle Open in January, Kelly Hair (1st Flight), and the 2nd Flight was a tie between Austin Darby and Tony Wisniewski! We’ve lowered the price of our monthly member tournament to $30, and 100% of the entry fee goes towards the payout! We will have food/drink specials that match the tournament theme. March’s event is a crowd favorite. St. Paddy’s Revenge - March 16th 1:00PM. 3-person green ball. 2 players will play a scramble on the hole, and the 3rd player will play their own ball (the green ball). The green ball will rotate between all 3 players on every hole. Example: If you have the green ball on hole #1, you will have it again on #4 and so on. Our member event for April is literally once in a lifetime. We will be open on Monday, April 8th, for the Total Solar Eclipse! Schedule of 4/8 Golf Events: 8:30AM- 18-hole 4-person scramble- We will have games on the course and opportunities to win prizes/improve your score. 1:42PM-1:47PM- Total Eclipse will be happening, so everyone will be at the clubhouse/on hole 1/18 watching. 3:00PM- Horserace/shootout- Everyone’s favorite! We will group you with people of similar handicap/skill level and play until we have a winner!

Irons For irons, keep your stance shoulder-width apart, keep your shoulders level, and your hands pressed slightly forward.

Wedges For wedges, keep a narrow stance and your hand placement is based on how high you want the shot to go. Stay tuned for next month’s tip for more details on this!

Fitness Updates

Emilie Kunco, Fitness Specialist Did you know that within 1 month, 25% of people drop their New Years Resolutions? By 6 months, over 50% drop. If your goal doesn’t feel obtainable, try setting 3-5 micro-goals that will help you slowly reach the big goal. Small steps can be reached easier than setting yourself up for something and feeling defeated by not reaching your target. Things don’t happen overnight; consistency is key. Staying focused and knowing what your end goal is will make the big picture happen. I’m excited to roll out nutrition coaching along with my current personal training program. Both start with an initial consultation. For nutrition, we’ll sit down and go over the basics of your history and what your goal is, we’ll do some math to configure your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) which is the amount of calories you need to consume just to do your everyday things like breathing; then we’ll factor in lifestyle and exercise. We’ll get you started logging your food and drink consumption and we’ll touch base weekly, making small changes where needed in your diet and lifestyle. For personal training we’ll do the same initial discussion, but instead of math we just get to work! I love saying, “To be comfortable, you have to get uncomfortable,” and that’s just what we’re doing together. You don’t know what you can do until you try, and with the right resources and accountability we can get you to your goals faster and with more long-term success!

A Dinner to Remember

Valentine’s Date Night Dinner Recap Steve Littlefield, Club President

Food and love go hand and hand. Add music to that and you have the makings of a failproof night. This was the case February 10 when SSCC hosted a Valentine’s dinner for the membership. If you were looking for an event to make you the rock star of your relationship or the perfect husband, all you needed to do was attend the SSCC’s dinner. As soon as you walked in the door, your better half knew you had chosen well. The lights were dim, and the floor was lined with red and pink rose petals leading you directly to the dining room. The tables were set with linens and a floral chandelier gave the room a decadent and stylish glow. The table’s centerpiece was a tall crystal vase that housed beautiful long-stemmed roses and soothing live piano music was being performed in the background. Chef Al’s elegant Valentine’s menu consisted of a four course meal with several selections for each course. For the main course, you had a choice between Almond Crusted Pork Tenderloin, Herb Parmesan-Crusted Flounder with a Citrus Beurre Blanc or Chicken Pot Pie Roulade. The finale of the dinner was Bananas Fosters that were flambéed at the table and served with vanilla ice cream. Outstanding.

As for Monica and me: We started off with a bottle of cabernet sauvignon, that was opened for us at the table. That sounds so simple, but it is hard to find a restaurant in Sulphur Springs that adds this touch anymore. First Course: Monica had the Brandy Mushroom Bisque and I had the Panzanella Crisped in Duck Fat. Accidently, we discovered the panzanella bread dipped in the brandy mushroom bisque was delicious and an extra delight.

Fourth Course: We ordered one of each, Bananas Foster with Ice Cream and Glace aux Noisette. I wasn’t sure what Glace aux Noisette was, but it was delicious. It was a form of hazelnut ice cream in strawberry orange sauce. As stated above the Bananas Foster was flambeed at the table and served hot from the fire with vanilla ice cream. This could have been our favorite, but by this time we were getting full.

Second Course: Monica had Shrimp Ceviche and I had the Oxtail Gnocchi Tomato Broth. The Oxtail Gnocchi Tomato Broth was my favorite part of the meal. Third Course: Monica had the Herb Parmesan-Crusted Flounder with Citrus Beurre Blanc and I had the Chicken Pot Pie Roulade. The Chicken Pot Pie was a deconstructed presentation with a large puff pastry on top of the chicken roulade. It was an excellent dish. The Herb ParmesanCrusted Flounder was Monica’s favorite part of the meal.

Afterwards, we stayed and listened to KB Brown play the piano and sing numerous Adele songs along with various artists. The evening was completed by me giving Monica the rose from the table and we headed home. I couldn’t have planned or asked for a better evening. We had great food, it was a romantic evening accompanied by live music and ended with a rose, and it was right here in Sulphur Springs. Food and love go hand and hand.

When the dinner was finished you had the option of staying and continuing to listen to beautiful music or continuing to the next romantic destination but not before server presented a long-stemmed rose from the table’s centerpiece to your date.
