A Note From Sue General Manager Update

Hello SSCC family,

We are officially halfway through the year. With such a wet spring, it is hard to imagine that we will ever need more rain. But the rain stops and the heat builds Summer is here

There will be plenty opportunities to enjoy your club during the summer season Swimming, golfing, lessons, workout facilities, bars, restaurants, and family events with special treats are all available for your enjoyment Spend time on the deck and pub porch reminiscing about past golf tournaments while drinking your favorite libations Have the bartenders prepare your favorite summer drink and watch the golfers coming in from those final rounds of golf, ready to settle up with their scores Dare I say (questionable) scores? How many holes in one have been made over the years on our beautiful course? How many clubs are resting at the bottom of the lake? How many thousands of balls are in the lake and surrounding water traps? I admit that I have contributed to the ball count.

Summer days are long and made to enjoy in your favorite pursuit. Or create a new pursuit. Whatever your summer holds, we really look forward to seeing you out here making new friends and new memories. We wish you the best summer ever.

Thank you for making us part of your summer.

Focus on Fitness Fitness Updates

Are you tired, rundown, listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? Well, I’m your Vitameatavegamin girl!

-Lucy Ricardo, “I Love Lucy”

You don’t have to take Vitameatavegamin like Lucy suggests; however, if you’re not feeling recovered or refreshed after resting from your most recent workout, you may be suffering from over-training! Yes, working out and being active has its many benefits, i e , stronger bones, better sleep, improved focus, mood, energy, but you can also over-train your body by not allowing it enough time to recover from the strain you’re putting it through! We all know that working out breaks the muscles down, but remember that they must build back before being torn down again Over-training can cause an over-production of cortisol (the body’s stress hormone) and contributes to a state of chronic stress in the body, which may disrupt your microbiome and cause additional hormonal imbalances You may feel overly fatigued, muscles will be extremely sore, have excessive sweating, and overheat easily.

Ensuring that you’re allowing yourself enough time to fully recover from your workouts will profit you more in the long run! You can do this by adding light resistance training, walking, yoga, and other forms of relaxing movements to your routine With this, I’d like to make you all aware of my new certifications that are available! Since the middle of January, I have been working on courses through NCI (Nutritional Coaching Institute) and have completed my Level 1 Nutrition, Gut Health, and Stress and Hormone classes It has been a learning experience for sure, but I cannot wait to truly help you all on your journey with my newly obtained knowledge!

Everybody’s body is different, and everyone has their own unique goals. Schedule a consultation with me to discuss concerns you may have with stress, hormones, training, and nutrition! Programs include:

Personal Training: 1:1 training by the 1/2 hour or the hour

Weekly Programming: 3 workouts a week with a weekly check-in to discuss progress and make adjustments

Nutrition Coaching: requires a 3-month commitment to help find hormonal balance by eliminating stressors & improving your gut health

All-In: The best of everything! Personal Training, Nutrition Coaching, & Hormone Balancing all together at a discounted price

With all the record spring rains, we're obviously in great shape for the rest of the year with regard to our water supply We got our Dryject aerification done on June 3rd, so our next greens aerification will be September 3rd By the time this goes out, we should have #3 tee box re-sodded with Zeon Zoysia grass, which grows much better in the shade We also bought a used walking mower this winter to try and add some new mowing patterns around greens.

Please sand all divots, repair ball marks, and watch the cart traffic patterns Thanks!

This is why we require cart path only Thankfully, our dam project was successful Post-Aerification Dryject Aerification 4 later on June 7th

Vickie’s Voice (is so loud) Clubhouse

Updates

Thefirstdraftcamebackfromtheprinter reading “Vickie’s Vice”. Ladies and Gentlemen, this was about to be a very different article than the one you’re readingtoday

What I want to raise my voice about is a really big-deal anniversary that is approachinginafewshortyears– SSCC isturning100yearsold!

Initially formed in 1928, the original golf course has been described to me as “4 holes in a cow pasture”. And today, just lookatthisbeauty:

I’ve been told the dam built to form the lake was constructed with an ox and mules, who worked during dusk and nighttime hours to spare the animals the heavy work in the daytime heat Eventually, “cabin” sites were developed on the east side of the lake by several families - Ashcroft, Cable, Price, Chaney, and others. Some sites also had business affiliationswithcompaniessuchasDallas Power&Light,LoneStarGas,etc.

The “original-original” clubhouse was morejustagatheringplacethananything like an official clubhouse Located across the lake from the present-day clubhouse, itultimatelyburnedtotheground.

Recollections may vary, but some claim there was a clubhouse subsequently built on this side of the lake which also burned down The August 9, 1964 edition of The Daily

Daily News-Telegram reports a frame building serving as the clubhouse was destroyed by the fire. Next time you’re in the Pub, the framed article and accompanying pictures hang on the wall beside the pool table There’s a picture included of a golfer teeing off while the inferno blazes away behind him Sounds right

Most of you know the old clubhouse that existed until about 18 months ago. Built afterthefire, itwasthescene,I’msure,of secrets we’d blush to hear about (or bust a gut laughing at) A reliable source tells me there was a weekly dice game in the men’slockerroom, womenallowed

Today’s clubhouse, completed in 2014, is the beating heart of the property This picture, from April 2013, is just after the foundationhadbeenpoured CurrentClubhouseFoundation

Thedeckstructureontheright(whichdid not have an innocent nickname) was a popular hangout When the pool developed leaks and other problems, they attempted to tear it out, but it was so strongly built they had to just fill it in, instead. It was located where the clock towerstandsnow.

ThisupdatedpictureisfromJune2024

A lot of changes through the years so many good stories And the Club we enjoy today is thanks to the passion and the vision of John Gillis, carried on by his wife, Debbie We owe them our gratitude and, in a little more than 3 years, we’ll be lifting a glass to toast the jewel of Northeast Texas, Sulphur Springs Country Club at 100.

The ‘60s era pool was the scene of many a Marco Polo game, diving contests, a near-drowning or two, innocent flirting betweenboysandgirls.

Beverage Updates

Greetings, and welcome to my portion of the newsletter. Since I’ve been back at SSCC, we’ve had a lot of fun at the club, and I’ve met a lot of new faces along the way SSCC has added happy hour pricing on drinks and eats Tuesday through Friday, 2:00PM to 6:00PM. Be sure to ask your bartender or server what we have on special during those hours.

Also, don’t forget all of the locations to hang out before or after hitting the course We offer the 511 Bar and Grill, Claret Pub, Par Tee Bar, and the Pool House Bar The Par Tee Bar is located directly next to the simulators so you can beat the heat while playing an indoor round of golf, plus order up your favorite snacks and beverages The simulators offer a wide variety of games, and we even offer party packages, so it’s a great place to bring the whole family.

We just had our first bourbon pairing in June that went amazingly well We now offer the bourbons featured at that dinner in the bars If you missed this one, don’t worry We’ll be scheduling another one in the future. We are planning a wine dinner coming up soon, as well, so be sure to keep your eye out for that and all of our other amazing events on the calendar.

Our bartenders and I are working to create a new craft cocktail menu We’ve been running specials in the bars to see what you like so we know what to add for you Let’s beat the heat together this summer, using and enjoying all of the amenities SSCC has to offer.
