The cold season is closing in on us, friends! Holidays spent with friends, family, and loved ones Gatherings with food and joy, comfort, and fun times That also means: the dreaded winter weight gain! In 2021, The Washington Post wrote an article stating “In a recent study, researchers used smart scales to monitor weight gain in more than 1,000 adults enrolled in a weight maintenance program. Participants gained about 2 4 pounds, on average, between early December and early January They shed some weight by March but retained 0.7 pounds.
So let’s discuss a few things that we can do to prevent the winter weight. We all love our warm, comfort foods that are high in calories and filled to the brim with heavy starches and creams or glutenous sweet treats Try filling your body with in-season fruit and vegetables that will curb your cravings in a better, more nutritious way. You’ll find that when you consume nutrient-dense foods, you can eat more. And who doesn’t want more food with less calories? Sign me up!
Be mindful of your nutrition label. Eating as clean and lean doesn’t mean that you’re limited in what you can consume It simply means to eat as little or lightly processed as possible. Sticking with the outer limits of the grocery store, where food is whole and not prepackaged, is going to offer your body such vitally important vitamins and minerals that we need to survive! When you find that a holiday recipe does require something premade and packaged, look at the ingredient list
list You may find yourself surprised with the amount of additional ingredients that we can’t pronounce; the added sugar, excess sodium, and fat content of the item
Don’t skip out on your sleep! When it gets darker earlier outside, it can cause a disruption with our circadian rhythms, making it difficult to get the sleep our body needs Not getting adequate amounts of rest can be an issue for health, but also may lead to that stubborn weight gain Remember to stick with your bedtime routine and limit or cut out screen time up to 30 minutes before you are ready to fall asleep The blue light from our screens also causes disturbances with our circadian rhythm
And, as always, hydrate and keep your body moving! We have plenty of options to choose from here at SSCC to ensure you stay strong, have fun, and hf
Class Schedule for November:
live your best life We have 3 different fitness classes you can choose from (Active Rest and Recovery, Step Aerobics, and Strength Training) that will get you on your feet and provide an opportunity to meet and exercise with others Got the winter blues? September and October in the golf course world was amazing. We had so many great events: Our LGA had 2 awesome events, MGA Member-Guest was a huge success, and a successful aerification and overseeding of our practice facility.
Make sure you are using your SSCC app to reserve and check tee times. It is the best way to see if we have an event or anything going on you may want to be a part of!
We have lots to look forward to round out our year here at SSCC Here is a breakdown of November/December golf events:

Billy Huckabee, Golf Course Superintendent
As the calendar turns to Fall, please be more aware of where you are driving golf carts and try to spread out the cart traffic, because obviously the grass is slowing down and won't have the ability to recover like it can during the growing season We finished our overseeding on both practice tees, target greens, on the driving range, front short game area and the Clubhouse lawn We also put some ryegrass down on #3 blue tee to help with the winter traffic Please help us with overall course maintenance, sanding divots, repairing ball marks and raking bunkers behind you

Member wow moments from this year.
One of the best parts of working at Sulphur Springs Country Club is bearing witness to all of the amazing things happening in our Members’ lives. Celebrating your accomplishments and proud moments around the Club-- from the hosting of major life events to finally nailing your swing on the driving range-- brings us joy, too! We have started referring to these as “wow moments” for their capacity to bring a smile to our faces and remind us of just how incredible all of you truly are
As we bring another year to a close, we want to celebrate some of these wow moments with you! If you’d like a copy of any of these photos, you can email media@sulphurspringscc.com.
This past year at Sulphur Springs Country Club was vibrant and full of memorable events, from the creative kickoff with Painting with a Twist to the engaging cocktail class led by Front of House Manager Chris Moore, which showcased delightful drink-making. Dueling Pianos had our ballroom full of singing and dancing members who did not want the night to end. New traditions blossomed, such as the well-received Friday Night Lights, where members enjoyed skill contests and socializing. At the same time, the total solar eclipse provided a breathtaking, shared experience that left many awestruck. Our Fourth of July celebration was filled with fun activities and an unforgettable fireworks show to end the night. Special-themed brunches, including an Easter celebration with an egg hunt and a Frozen-themed brunch featuring beloved characters, added to the year’s excitement We eagerly anticipate refining our events to ensure our activities continue to resonate with member interests We can't wait to see everyone at our upcoming events!
- Amanda McGowin, Member Events Coordinator for SSCC
Lyenda Johnston was the winner of a popular event we ran in September of this year called the Shotgun Poker Run!
Members met up at the Clubhouse and rode around to stations across the course to grab a drink and draw a card Once everyone had a full hand (and a few drinks down), they all met up and the best hand won a cash prize from the entry fees Congratulations, Lyenda, on your liquor (sorry, luck) of the draw!
Sulphur Springs High School Boys & Girls Golf teams were named back-to-back District 15 4A Champs! Alyson Thomas won 1st place individual, Evey Birdsong won 2nd place individual, Kenzie Posey won 3rd place, and McKenna Meskimen won 4th Nick Burney also won 1st place individual and Case Fails also qualified for Regionals as a freshman!
Special recognition to the coaches and to the parents of these exceptional young members, who have worked and made it a priority to assist these players in developing their talents and dreaming their dreams well done!
February saw the ever-popular Dueling Pianos event & members had a blast!
Former members Don & Sarah McCann REALLY got into character for March’s Murder Mystery event.
Member Jonathan McGraw & his sons played an awesome round during the Parent-Child Tournament.
Paige Smith & her daughter, Claire hung out and enjoyed the day during our 4th of July celebration.
Congratulations to Cecelia Glud for winning the LGA Championship in September!
Seeing the love of golf develop in the young women around the Club is always such a joyful experience.
Here we have Taryn Michael, a budding golfer and our Girls 18-hole Jr. Club Champion holding the newsletter edition with her photo on the cover. We can’t wait to see all that she accomplishes in golf world! You’ll also find Birdie Mahaffey working hard to drive her ball to the green as she played with her dad in the Parent-Child Tournament
Above: We love our littles! It brings us so much joy to see these cuties around the Club, enjoying our events and activities with their parents Thank you for sharing your families with us and giving us all something to smile about
Left: Dancing, singing, drinking, and delirium were afoot during our annual Dueling Pianos event, and these two definitely caught the spirit of the evening
Always a welcome face at our member events, Cecil Rich dons his authentic German hat for our Frozenthemed Back to School Brunch back in August. According to Cecil, the hat was from when he was stationed in Germany with the military, and it made the perfect statement for a perfect event.
Littles were in love with our very own Anna, Elsa, and Olaf, and our staff was, of course, in love with Cecil!
