Dismountable and Adaptable Frame System Design
To me, architecture is the interstice where human narratives and material logic collide. In my early work, I sought meaning in the external: how cultural currents, urban rhythms, and behavioral patterns could crystallize into spatial form. Cities taught me that design is a translator of contexts—a mediator between the collective memory embedded in streets and the everevolving needs of those who inhabit them. But my Master ’s studies revealed a parallel truth: that poetry in architecture must be grounded in the prose of construction. Now, I obsess over joints and junctions, over how forces travel through a beam or how light slips between two panels. This shift isn’t an abandonment of humanism but its material realization—because a wall’s thickness, a window’s reveal, or a stair’s pitch ultimately dictates how bodies move, interact, and feel. I design at the threshold of scales: from the macro (how a building stitches into its urban fabric) to the micro (how a railing meets a floor). Whether through adaptive reuse that honors a city’s DNA or through tectonic innovations that redefine spatial experience, my goal remains unchanged: to create architecture that measures its success in lived moments—where every detail, from urban strategy to screw selection, serves a deeper intentionality.

01 Infinite Mesh Dismountable and Adaptable Frame System Design Site: Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong, China 2024 Spring -HKU March Studio: The Ubiquitous Frame Supervisor: Charlotte Lafont-Hugo
In this concrete jungle, we break away from solid spaces and embrace the power ofopen areas. Our system is designed to be easily disassembled, allowing flexibility and adaptability. What makes our system special is how the tubes work together. They overlap, extending in any direction to create a mesh-like structure. This means they can belengthened indefinitely, forming a network of cables and tubes. We've designed hyper rigid joints and smart connections that ensure the system's strength and stability. By strategically placing these connections off-center, wereduce the chances of them breaking, making the system more reliable.Flexibility and customization are key features of our design philosophy. Our system can be seamlessly integrated into existing buildings, acting as an independentgrowing structure. This symbiotic relationship between our system and the buildingcreates a vibrant and open space for various activities. The envelope design focused on creatinga seamless integration of the framesystem with the surrounding space. We emphasis on developing the system withthe concept of overlapping and openend, ensuring a visually appealing and functional integration that enhances theoverall aesthetic and performance of the space.

02 DECONSTRUCT THE SEGREGATION Adaptive Reuse Site: China Hong Kong City, TST, Hong Kong, China 2024 Fall -HKU MArch Studio: Context as Generator Supervisor: Gilles Vanderstocken
This project aims to revitalize CHKC by breaking down spatial segregation and creating a seamless connection between different zones, enhancing accessibility and fluid movement. The goal is to transform CHKC into a dynamic, inviting space that aligns with its vibrant neighborhood while encouraging public interaction and engagement. Located in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, China Hong Kong City (CHKC) is a multifunctional urban complex with an exceptional sea view, bustling surroundings, and a variety of programs, including a ferry terminal, mall, and office spaces. The lack of active circulation between programs with a cramped atrium plus oversized and underused ferry waiting area, creates inefficiency and restricts movement. Starting with an analysis of circulation issues, I used bubble diagrams and flow analysis to identify areas for improvement. The design reconfigures the central areas— entrance, atrium, and podium—while preserving vertical cores, improving spatial relationships, and ensuring structural integrity through new openings that reflect the concept of "deconstruction."The interaction between the shopfronts, balustrades, and irregular atriums creates interesting spaces for greenery and gatherings, transforming the area into a more seamless public space. The sense of "erosion" in the form symbolizes the connection between different zones, linking the podium, ferry terminal, and mall with larger public spaces and more efficient circulation. The directional shape of the atriums varies from floor to floor, guiding people to different zones. This gradual inward progression enhances the sense of publicity and permeability.

03 Intermediate Living Highrise Residential Design Site: Wan Chai, Hong Kong, China 2023 Fall -HKU MArch Studio: What the Code Supervisor: Fai Au, Ulrich Kirchhoff
This project challenges the traditional spatial organization in Hong Kong's residential buildings, specifically the norm of placing public amenities or clubhouse functions in the lower podium levels. The relationship between public and private realms is redefined by integrating public amenities throughout the building, distributed across various floors. This new approach aims to foster a more concentrated sharing model, where a single shared space is used by a smaller group of residents, creating a stronger sense of community and belonging. The new system divides shared spaces into two categories: “Dynamic” and “Static”. Each shared space allows residents to engage in specific activities: dynamic spaces support in-house sports, gaming, or socializing, while static spaces are dedicated to work, yoga, or meditation. This distribution ensures that shared areas are used in a more personalized and focused way, reinforcing the sense of belonging for residents. The shared units are interspersed between residential units in an alternating layout. Each private residential unit has direct access to two separate shared units: one leading to the dynamic shared space and another to the static shared space. This design creates a clear but flexible boundary between private living spaces and shared communal areas, offering greater fluidity between personal and collective living. The integration of public and private spaces in this manner is a response to the need for a more socially connected living environment, breaking away from the one-size-fits-all approach in residential complexes. This residential life model not only challenges the distribution and proportion of public amenities as outlined by Hong Kong's residential codes but also outlines a new model of urban living that enhances the quality of life in densely populated cities like Hong Kong.

04 Convergence of History Fragments History Museum Design Site: Dongshan Area, Guangzhou, China 2021 Spring - Bachelor Year 3 of Architecture Instructor: Zhou Mao(saupzhoumao@gzhu.edu.cn)
Compared with Guangzhou, an ancient port and highly modernized city with a history of over 2,000 years, the rise and decline of the Dongshan area in Guangzhou only took less than 100 years. However, as an important urban area of Guangzhou, Dongshan has undergone tremendous changes. The officials of the Qing Dynasty, western missionaries, and returned overseas Chinese took turns to develop this area. The local Lingnan culture and foreign cultures combined here gave birth to distinctive architectural styles in Dongshan, which contributed significantly to the diversity and inclusiveness of Guangzhou's urban culture. The unique cultural temperament has flourished Dongshan again as a resort in the last decade. However, the exquisite historical sites in Dongshan have become a marketing gimmick to attract young consumers. The gradual emigration of original residents and the influx of commercial capital have made the cultural connotation behind the unique temperament omitted and forgotten. To remind people of the city's cultural essence, I present the development process in classical architectural languages from different eras, which is the "history fragments" referred to in the project title. Three Main exhibition halls are designed with three symbolic architectural elements, connected by the spiral traffic clues. The round atrium converges space of different time themes as a manifestation of the cultural inclusiveness of the city.

Overall View The building is located on a street corner full of historical buildings with red bricks. The general layout follows the combination of the shape of "square" and "round". The facade of the museum is made of brick materials to respond to the existing buildings made of red bricks, in a more modern and neat way. The simpleness of facade highlights the historical buildings around the site with simple facades. The strong sense of volume lay a heavy emotional tone of memorial and remembrance of the history museum.

Exhibition Hall for Era 1
Three Main exhibition halls are designed with three symbolic architectural elements, connected by the spiral traffic clues. The round atrium converges space of different time themes as a manifestation of the cultural inclusiveness of the city.
The theme of the exhibition hall in the first period is to design and display the courtyard, which is an element extracted from the traditional architecture in the Qing Dynasty in Dongshan area.
Exhibition Hall for Era 2 The main construction of the second period came from the church. The arches and arcades represented by them are typical features of architecture in this period, representing the language of western architecture that just appeared at that time.
Exhibition Hall for Era 3 The leading group devleoping Dongshan in the third period was returned overseas Chinese. Their life experience in the West prompted them to introduce modern plan layouts, space division and architectural theory into China for the first time.

The representative building of this period, the bamboo tube house, had a narrow and long building plan because of the dense urban environment. People designed several light well in the house for ventilation and lighting.
The arches and arcades are typical features of architectures including churches, orphanages, hospitals, nursing homes, church schools and other public buildings. built by the church .
The representative building of this period is the garden villa, and the typical architectural language is the three part outer balcony, which represents the architectural idea of combining China with the West and adjusting measures to local conditions.

05 A Thousand Faces, One Community Market Design Site: Beiting Village, University Town, Guangzhou, China 2022 Spring - Bachelor Year 4 of Architecture Instructor: Zhou Mao(saupzhoumao@gzhu.edu.cn)
The streets of Beiting Village in the university town are the carriers of people's public activities. Like the traditional market space, people are closely connected because of business deals. The bustling streets are full of vendor peddling, people bargaining, or the surprise and joy of making a good deal. This high-density urban space's vitality presents an uneven distribution in time and space. Regarding spatial distribution, the public space in the village is only in a crowded and dense main street formed by the south and the main road junction, but there is no adequate public interaction space at the bottom of the village. During the time of a year the commercial vitality was also relatively low during the three-month student holiday, so we hope to explore a balance between the vitality penetration of street space and the limited available space. A community thousands of faces in, "surface" refers to the market module board with countless combination possibilities, and "community" refers to the sense of closeness and closeness formed by people based on the new market. Through demolishing some inefficient and illegal buildings, installing modular, prefabricated market units and furniture provides higher flexibility for the function shift of a stall in a day or a year. Use the online market community application to link with the villagers online so they can better the market environment and create a strong sense of community belongingness. According to the assumption, Beiting Village will eventually form a public market network with point-line-plane connections. Nowadays, the prosperity of large-scale urban complexes and online e-commerce also affect the once-close relationship between people and between people and cities. This project combines space flexibility, Internet digital technology, and three-dimensional street space to continue the vitality of traditional street market in the new era.

An uneven distribution in space among people's activities are shown, which are mainly carried out on the main street, while there are few crowd gathering activities in other places of the village. Therefore, we hope that part of the commercial activities of the main street can be introduced into the inner lanes, and the vitality of the main street can be permeated into depth of the village.

Spatial Condition Land Use and Activities Uneven Vitality Distribution
A typical main street space in Beiting Village and its surrounding areas are selected as an illustration of the high-density construction and the use of space tension in Beiting Village.
An uneven distribution in space among people's activities are shown, which are mainly carried out on the main street, while there are few crowd gathering activities in other places of the village. The main street is where diverse functions are acommodated and complex activities are allowed. As the vitality core of the main village, we hope to preserve its inherent space form and functions and improve its spatial experience and environment. Therefore, we hope that part of the commercial activities of the main street can be introduced into the inner lanes, and the vitality of the main street can be permeated into depths of the village. As a result, we propose to replace the space occupied by unfunctionl old buildings and illegal construction with a new space utilization strategy, which is highly flexible to meet the periodic changes in spatal needs and insertable to be easily duplicated and dispersed.

06 Between the Blocks Department Hall of Architecture Site: Dongshan Area, Guangzhou, China 2020 Spring - Bachelor Year 2 of Architecture Instructor: Zhao Yang(zhaoyang@gzhu.edu.cn)
In the past, we always divided the architecture teaching space of the school into different grades and classes according to floors and classrooms, with scarce public activity space for communication between students. In the busy learning and courses, except for the chance to meet while waiting and taking the elevator, there are few opportunities to carry out informal communication learning across classes and grades. In this project, I aim to create more meeting opportunities by weakening the boundary sense of informal learning space and creating rich traffic connections. Divide learning units into individual blocks according to grades and majors to ensure independence between different learning units; The blocks are interspersed and stacked in form, creating a shared space between students from various learning units and creating more possibilities for communication and learning. The rich combination of blocks has generated varied inner court platforms, grey spaces and outdoor terraces as informal learning spaces. Public areas with different degrees of openness correspond to various student activities. They create an outer atrium through vertical connection with fuzzy boundaries and a lively atmosphere. The internal space adopts an open and flexible division strategy to meet the transformation of space needs of the students of the School of Architecture in different situations, such as individual thinking, group working, classroom learning, critique and presentation, etc.

07 Aksu Airport Termial 2 Airport Terminal Design Site: Aksu, Xinjiang, China 2022 Spring Instructor: Chen Aoyan
Aksu Prefecture is home to the ancient kingdom of Qiuci and the world's rare Danxia landform. It borders the highest peak of the Tianshan Mountains to the north and the Tarim Basin to the south. It is rich in cultural and natural tourism resources. However, the existing terminal building cannot meet the needs of Aksu Prefecture to promote the development of tourism and create a regional business card in terms of scale, spatial environment and completeness of facilities. This design presents the artistic conception of the magnificent natural landforms of the Aksu Prefecture in form. It adopts a large silver-white cantilevered roof partially covered with aluminum plates, which resembles the Hanling of the Tianshan Mountains, ready to take off. The interior space is inspired by the canyons with gullies and ravines. It adopts a smart and smooth form and a comfortable and pleasant scale, bringing the blue sky and white clouds above the skylight into the interior, creating a relaxing and pleasant experience of entering and leaving the port.
