As you all may have heard the vaccination mandate for employees of any Medicare-or-Medicaid certified facility was upheld. Below you will find the timeline for implementation. At the Marian Home we have all employees accounted for by either vaccination or exemption. As of 1/16/2022 our employee vaccination rate was 86.4 %.
INSIDE THIS EDITION:
Phase 1 Requirements-February 14, 2022 Facilities must have all policies and procedures in place for ensuring staff are fully vaccinated, providing exemptions, and tracking staff vaccinations. Staff at all health care facilities included within the regulation must have received, at a minimum, the first dose of a primary series or a single dose COVID-19 vaccine prior to staff providing any care, treatment, or other services for the facility and/or its patients.

Phase 2 Requirements-March 14, 2022 Staff must be fully vaccinated (with the exception of those who have been granted exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccine or for those staff for whom the COVID-19 vaccination must be temporarily delayed, as recommended by CDC). Temporary delays may include the administration of monoclonal antibodies in the recent past.

LAURA STEIN GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO CARE FOR OUR RESIDENTS...
...and her efforts are getting recgonized!
Laura is so committed to making her residents smile she allows them to pick her hair color. One month she had rainblow colored hair - see photo on left. Now that is pure passion to her profession and those she cares for. Who would't smile?
Once again, we have faced a few challenges in our day due to COVID. Our team continues to pull together to get through each day. I would like to thank everyone for their endless effort & love for the residents. We work together to keep the days as normal as normal can be. Thank you for all the extra shifts, hours & hard work keeping our residents safe & healthy. I would like to welcome our new staff that have joined our team in the last month. We are happy that many are employees who have been part of our team in the past & have returned. 1. Vanessa Ayala, CNA / CMA 2. Kim Cardenas, CNA 3. Tori Spencer, RN 4. Christopher Mobley, LPN 5. Kaitlyn Andrews from Dietary has transitioned to Nursing & currently enrolled in the CNA course @ ICCC. The Nursing Dept has 3 employees' currently enrolled in the CNA course at ICCC to complete their certification. They are; Alex Sortedahl, who is starting to train as a CNA. She was previously in Housekeeping. Teresa Hanus, who has been working as a caregiver on 100 hall for the last 4 months. She too was previously a Housekeeper & Kaitlyn Andrews from Dietary. The Residents & Staff wish you luck along your journey to complete this course. The Nursing Dept thank all the families for their love & support during these difficult times. Appreciate all your prayers that give us the strength to continue to be the best caregivers we can be.

REQUESTING UPDATED INFORMATION OR CHANGES As we settle into the new year, I hope everyone is doing well. Winter is still here, but Spring is on the way. Just a reminder that if you have any changes to phone numbers/ address/ email that you make sure the Marian Home has the current information. If you have made any changes to your loved ones insurance coverage please make sure that the Marian Home has the updated information on file. This is important for us to have as we send this information with the resident when they go to doctor appointments, and Medicare can cover the cost of Physical or Occupational therapy if this is needed. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Most of us would probably agree that February in Iowa is synonymous with snow/ice and extreme wind/cold. Thus, for me, the "weather" tends to be a focal point, especially this time of year. Learning how the wind/cold affects the building structure & plumbing/heating systems and then reacting to the changes in a timely enough manner to ensure that pipes do not freeze or rooms do not get too cold is essential for a quality maintenance department to focus on. While we have decades of maintenance experiences amongst the members of the maintenance staff, we are continuing to learn the best times and methods to apply to ensure that our residents and tenants remain comfortable, cozy, & content here at the Marian Home & Village. The affects of snow/ice on the roof, on HVAC equipment, or on the sidewalks and parking lots is a constant battle with the sun often just warming the snow enough to melt and then freeze again. When lengthy snow events dump several inches or maybe only drop a couple inches over the period of a day or two, it is a challenge to always keep the walkways/lots as safe as we like. The maintenance/transportation department work together throughout the snow events to frequently shovel and apply ice melt product.
I want to let everyone know that February is National Chocolate Month! Think of all the fun chocolatey things you can make for you and your Valentine. From baked chocolate goods, to chocolate covered fruit or even a chocolate fondue for dessert your options are endless. Here’s a recipe shared inthe Marian Home cookbook years ago from the Marian Home Kitchen: Brownies: Bring to a boil: 3C butter 1C cocoa 3C water Mix Together in a Bowl: 6C flour 6C sugar 1T. baking soda 1 ½ tsp salt Stir into Dry Ingredients: 6 eggs 1 ½ C buttermilk 4 ½ tsp vanilla *After adding to dry ingredients, add cocoa mix. Pour into pans. Bake at 325 for 12-18 minutes. Frosting: 3/4 C butter ½ C cocoa ½ C buttermilk *Cook until it boils.
We also focus attention every morning to clearing the wind-drifted snow or applying ice melt on all reoccurring slick areas! However, during these ongoing heavy snow/ice events it is often impossible to always ensure that your path to or from the building will be perfectly safe.
Add: 7C powdered sugar 1 ½ tsp vanilla Pour over Brownies
Please consider the weather when planning your visit. Wearing appropriate footwear and apparel, and exercising caution is encouraged. Your safety and that of your loved ones remains our upmost concern at all times. We keep a shovel and barrel of ice melt at all entry doors for our use, but all are welcome to use either to address any immediate concern areas.

HOUSEKEEPING Residents will continue to go on outings with family and friends and also to appointments. Please make sure that your loved one has their winter gear brought in, this includes, winter coats, proper footwear, hats, gloves and scarves.

Welcome to the month of love! Let’s hope the Groundhog doesn’t see his shadow and we have an early Spring. With that being said, we will be having parties for Groundhogs Day and Valentine’s Day.
