As individuals, our ability to help a Brother in need or make a lasting impact on our communities can feel limited, but as a whole our capacity to make a difference may well be limitless. Congratulations, Mary Ann! This fall, the Scottish Rite Charities team bid farewell to Mary Ann Bichajian, Manager of Development & Planned Giving. For more than 15 years, Mary Ann kept the Charities Department running seamlessly – working long hours, completing countless projects, and solving every problem that was thrown her way. Her dedication and commitment to the work of our Charities was unmatched. We wish Mary Ann the very best in her retirement and thank her for her outstanding service to Scottish Rite Charities. Despite tremendous challenges, the Children’s Dyslexia Centers are emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic a stronger organization. When face-to-face instruction wasn’t possible, the Centers continued to provide children and

educators with quality instruction online. As the program transitions back to conducting lessons in person, we are exploring ways to further our mission by expanding services to areas outside those served by the Centers.

A Kid Like Me Campaign When COVID-19 left our Children’s Dyslexia Centers unable to hold in-person fundraisers, many of our Centers lost one of their main sources of revenue. The A Kid Like Me campaign offered Centers a complete digital fundraising program to help them bring in donations when face-to-face events just weren’t possible.

George Pitchley went the extra mile this spring to help raise money for his local Children’s Dyslexia Center in Tenafly, New Jersey. Just eight years old, he had been attending the program since 2019 and wanted to do something to give back.

“We were thinking about ideas of how to fundraise, and we knew they had been affected this year with the pandemic because a lot of their fundraising is done in person,” his mother Caroline said. “I’ve been at the Center for two years and I wanted to do something nice for them too. They helped me with reading and a bunch of other things,” George said. Because their family had a history of dyslexia, George’s parents recognized the signs early on when they noticed he was struggling to learn to read. They began researching support networks in the area and discovered the Center in Tenafly.

“We were very lucky to get into the program. George was lucky enough to begin in first grade, and he’s had two wonderful tutors through the Center. That’s been a key thing for us is that George got the help he needed early enough in his journey,” Caroline said. Knowing how much his Center had helped him, George decided he wanted to raise money to help another kid like him learn to read. He set a goal of raising $500 dollars by walking 50 miles for the Center, and his mother set up a GoFundMe page to help with his efforts. After sharing the fundraiser on her Facebook page, everything took off.

Even his teacher from school came and walked with him for one of his miles. “George’s older brother made a joke. He said, ‘George is so famous, people pay money to walk with him,’” Caroline said.

In addition to raising money, they worked to raise awareness about dyslexia. through his time at the Children’s Dyslexia Center. “The Center has given him confidence. Now he’s reading at grade level, which is just awesome. I remember the first time George picked up a book and wanted to read it to me. To see his confidence was amazing,” Caroline said. When it was time to walk his final mile, George had a police escort and more than 20 people join him as he crossed the finish line, complete with a confetti cannon and police sirens. “Literally a bunch of people came. There were two police cars, one in the back and one in the front,” George said. “It felt really good.”

The Grand Almoner's Fund at Work No matter what life throws at you, you have millions of Brothers to help you catch it. Brady Sprague was just 27 years old when he received the news that no one wants to hear. He had been experiencing health problems for several weeks, and people at work had begun pulling him aside to ask if he was okay. “I was having trouble walking around and even getting in and out of chairs,” Brady recalled. He assumed it was a kidney stone, but decided to go in for a checkup after some urging from his girlfriend. YOU WERE THERE

The tests didn’t reveal a kidney stone, but doctors discovered something more concerning in his stomach. At a followup appointment, he learned he had cancer throughout his abdomen and would need to be hospitalized as soon as possible. The diagnosis was difficult to process. “I had to call my parents and tell them the news. I live on the fourth floor, and it was actually getting to the point where it was difficult for me to get up the stairs – it was really brutal,” Brady said. He was hospitalized the next day and began chemotherapy. The future looked bleak. He was told that there was no cure, and it was impossible to say how much time he had left. His cancer was pretty advanced, and he was encouraged to take part in a clinical trial. “Part of me felt like my life was over and I might as well just try something to help other people. And my mom and my girlfriend said, ‘No. Let’s pump the brakes. Let’s get a second opinion.’” Brady had joined Freemasonry a few months before, and at his next Lodge meeting, he shared his diagnosis with his

Brothers. Several members approached him and recommended he talk to a fellow member who was an eye surgeon with connections to several oncologists. Brady said he felt reluctant at first to have the conversation. “You know, I took everything about the obligations seriously, but I remember thinking, ‘What is this guy going to be able to do? He’s an eye surgeon.’”

I feel like working with him has completely changed my mentality and my outlook.” Throughout his battle with cancer, his Masonic family has been there each step of the way. The gesture meant a lot to Brady. “I had met him at events, but I didn’t expect him to actually remember me,” Brady said. “I remember telling him how I had wanted to be a Mason for a really long time and that I was excited to get raised, and he told me that it was exciting to see someone under 30 in a tuxedo at the Grand Lodge building.” A few weeks later, Brady learned from his Lodge Secretary that his Lodge was giving him financial support to help with his medical bills. Then he got a phone call from Ill. Brother Steve Stefanakous, 33°, Scottish Rite Active Member from New York. After introducing himself, Brother Stefanakous explained that he was calling on behalf

of Scottish Rite and had heard that Brady might be having some trouble. “I explained to him my situation, and he said, ‘Look. I’m working with the Grand Almoner’s Fund, and we have resources for Masons in situations like yours. If you’re open to accepting the help, I’d love to come by and just meet you and say hello.’” Brady remembers the visit vividly. “When he came and gave me the envelope, I opened up that letter, looked at the check and I started getting a little bit emotional. And he just put his hand on my shoulder, and he said, ‘The only question I have is, is this enough? Because if it’s not, we can do more.’” Brother Stefanakous began telling Brady

about the work of the Grand Almoner’s Fund and shared his experience after Hurricane Sandy handing out checks to people whose homes had been ravaged by the storm. “I started to think for the first time that even if things really go south, it might not be completely disastrous,” Brady said. “The way Steve just came through – I can’t tell you how much peace of mind it brought me.” Brady called the support he received from the Almoner’s Fund gamechanging. “I took that check, I cashed it, and I cleared all my tabs with my different healthcare providers. I even got to put a couple hundred bucks into my savings account for next year’s deductible.” When his friends ask him about the ring he wears, Brady says he enjoys sharing his incredible experiences with the Fraternity. “From the minute I got diagnosed, the Masons have stepped up and helped me in real, material ways. I had a support system to pick me up that I wouldn’t have had if this had happened a couple years prior. It’s not a piggybank you can raid, but when we say that we’re serious about taking care of each other, we really mean it.” Recently Brady learned that another small spot of cancer had been found in his abdomen, and he would need another surgery to remove it. Despite this setback, he has a completely different outlook on his future. He recently got engaged and is looking forward to the days ahead with hope. “I can’t tell you what a paradigm shift this has been to get this kind of support. It allows me to feel secure. I can’t thank Scottish Rite enough for your role in that. Going through this once and seeing how everyone had my back, it just feels like I’m not doing it alone.”

Brady was thrilled to join Freemasonry and carry on the Masonic legacy of his grandfather.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND For nearly 70 years, the Leon M. Abbott Scholarship Fund has been helping students pursue their dreams of higher education. Scottish Rite Masons, their families, and members of Masonic-

related youth groups are all eligible to apply for an Abbott Scholarship. As the costs of a college education continue to rise, your support of the Leon M. Abbott Scholarship Fund is more important than ever.

This year, over $400,000 was allocated for Leon M. Abbott Scholarships, with close to 350 scholarships awarded to students attending accredited colleges, universities and specialty schools.

Abbygail Tanger grew up in Amesbury, Massachusetts and recently graduated from HamiltonWenham Regional High School. She is beginning her freshman year at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida where she will be majoring in allied health with a concentration in medical sciences. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to continue her studies and eventually to become a physician’s assistant.

Christopher Sova is a Scottish Rite Mason who serves as the Valley Secretary for the Valley of Michigan - Northeast Region. He is attending Delta Community College in University Center, Michigan, where he is enrolled in the school’s LPN to RN transition program. He is working to complete his nursing degree and hopes to become a better nurse, leader and coworker.

Lauren Godbout is a rising junior at Union College in Schenectady, New York. She is studying neuroscience and has plans to attend medical school, with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician or neurologist. She has worked with kids at the YMCA for the past 6 years. Lauren’s father encouraged her to apply for the scholarship, as he is a Mason, along with her grandfather and great grandfather.

Abbygail’s grandfather, who introduced the Abbott Scholarship program to her, has been a Mason for over 50 years and a Scottish Rite Mason for 40 years. Her grandmother is also active in the Order of the Eastern Star. Abbygail is grateful for receiving the scholarship as she begins her first year of college. “The Abbott Scholarship means a lot to me, as it is a way to be able to pay for my higher education and pursue the future I want!” she said.

Chris decided to go back to school after getting married and starting a family, and receiving an Abbott Scholarship has had a significant impact on his family and future. He wants his fellow Brothers to know that the Abbott Scholarship program is available for Scottish Rite members pursuing higher education at any age. “Ten years ago, I didn’t have to worry about working full time, balancing a family, and going to school. The Abbott Scholarship has helped alleviate the financial impact that going back to school would have had on my family. I so appreciate the help and support of my Brothers in this worthwhile endeavor.”

Lauren had this to say about being awarded an Abbott Scholarship: “Receiving an Abbott Scholarship has been immensely helpful in my pursuit of higher education. The scholarship has eased the financial burdens of higher education, especially with the costs of textbooks for classes. It has allowed me to focus more on academics and not have to stress about how I will afford college. Above all, thank you! I am beyond grateful.”

MUSEUM & LIBRARY While this past year had its challenges for our Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, the team worked together to develop new exhibitions, improved museum space and much more. After being closed for nearly 15 months, the Museum officially reopened in July 2021. Museum hours are currently Monday - Friday, 10 AM – 4 PM. Visitors are welcome! NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Richard W. Elliot, 33° Ill. Brother Richard W. Elliot, 33°, was named the Executive Director of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library this year, following the retirement of Ill. Brother Bruce Work, 33°. His early goals include enhancing the use of the Museum’s facilities, working with the Charities Department to develop exciting fundraising endeavors, and continuing to strengthen educational and leadership programs “so that the world itself becomes closer to Freemasonry through our educated members,” he said.

New Exhibitions: What's In A Portrait?

Staff took advantage of the Museum’s closure due to COVID to schedule some much-needed renovations to the Van Gorden Library & Archives. Located off the Museum's main lobby, the Library had not been updated since it opened in 1975. New carpet and workstations, a new drop ceiling, tinted windows, and LED lighting were just a few of the improvements made to enhance the experience of visitors to the Museum & Library.

After its in-person exhibition was postponed last year, the Museum launched its new “What’s In A Portrait?” exhibition in July 2021. The exhibition features a selection of works that help tell the story of the many people who shaped Masonic and fraternal organizations in the United States for over 200 years and is on view through July 21, 2022.

The Library & Archives has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections on the subject of American Freemasonry and comprises over 60,000 books, 1,600 serial titles and 2,000 cubic feet of archival materials.

Unlike most aprons of the era, this one is not bound along the edges with ribbon. Instead, the edges were painted blue to resemble fabric binding and then embellished with a blue basketweave pattern. Family history suggested that it was made and used in New Hampshire.

Hauts Grades Academy Update VALLEY OF NEW YORK CITY, NY

Piers A. Vaughan, 33° MSA, HGA “The Hauts Grades Academy allows you to spend time really absorbing the lessons of the series of Grades we put on and takes us beyond simply performing them. I particularly liked the way the experience started broadly with multiple choice questions on all the Grades, then homed in on a selection of Grades at a greater depth, finally leading to a paper in which you could demonstrate your knowledge in a particular field - not unlike the way a college degree works. It’s also rewarding to know that this Hauts Grades Academy is adding to the body of knowledge of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction."

WHITE FLOWER SOCIETY The White Flower Society was developed by former Scottish Rite First Lady Monica Glattly as an expansion of the Grand Almoner’s Fund, providing assistance to Masonic widows and their families facing unexpected hardship. As support and awareness has grown, the White Flower Society has become an integral part of our Scottish Rite family support system.

BUILDERS COUNCIL Membership in the Builders Council requires a donation or pledge of at least $10,000 to the Children’s Dyslexia Centers. Builders Council members are recognized with the program’s signature green teddy bear tie and scarf. Once their $10,000 commitment is fulfilled, donors receive a gold tie and scarf. BUILDERS COUNCIL PROFILE

Gregory M. Kita, 33°

As a high school principal, Ill. Brother Greg Kita has experienced firsthand the transformative nature of the Children’s Dyslexia Centers program and the difference it can make in the lives of students learning to read and write. An early supporter of his local Center, Brother Kita officially became a member of the Cleveland Center’s Board of Governors in 2016 and has gone on to become one of the greatest advocates for the Builders Council. In celebration of the Center’s 20th anniversary this past year, he decided to not only join the Builders Council himself but made it his goal to bring on 20 new members of the Builders Council within the year. By meeting with members of his lodge and Masons within the community,

Brother Kita was able to recruit 13 new members, each committing a pledge of $10,000 or more to the Cleveland Center. While short of his original goal, he is extremely excited about the potential these pledges hold for the Center and its ability to grow in the future. When asked what inspired him to support the Children’s Dyslexia Centers and take on this incredible challenge, he said: “I don’t know that there is anything more powerful that you can give someone than the ability to read. This is something that we take for granted but is something that our students struggle with every day.”

Remembering David P. Dill, 33° On November 20, 2020, Ill. Brother David P. Dill, Scottish Rite Director of Technology Solutions, was suddenly taken from us. For more than 20 years, Dave was a dedicated member of our staff, but more importantly, he was a committed friend and mentor. During his tenure at Supreme Council, he gave generously of his time and talents – and in doing so had an incredible impact on the fraternity he loved, and on those of us who were blessed to work with him daily. Dave was a cherished member of our work family and is deeply missed. We hope that our efforts to carry the torch of the Scottish Rite would make Brother Dill proud.
