A MESSAGE FROM SCOTTISH RITE CHARITIES

Changing Lives, Together This is much more than a catchphrase, slogan, mantra, or quip: these three words define our four charities in a special way as we recognize that we couldn’t do this incredible work alone. It is my hope that you see this 2019 Impact Report as an eye-opening testament to the impact your support has on our Scottish Rite Charities. Your impact over the last 12 months has been tremendous.

We embraced and went our separate ways.

Before you flip to the next pages of this report, I want to tell you a quick story of impact. I was at the Biennial meeting of our Supreme Council and after a long day of work, I was sitting in the hospitality room of the Valley of Pittsburgh, bourbon in hand. Ill. Brother Tom Sturgeon introduced me to a lady and said, “Michael is the guy who heads up the efforts for our Grand Almoner’s Fund.”

Throughout this publication you will see numbers, facts, and figures from our four Scottish Rite Charities - the Children’s Dyslexia Centers, the Scottish Rite Grand Almoner’s Fund, the Leon M. Abbott Scholarship Fund, and the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library.

Almost immediately she started to cry. As she wiped away tears, she shared how much the Almoner’s Fund had helped her 35-year-old son during his battle with cancer. I will never forget what she said to me in those few moments: “My son always said he wasn’t a good Mason, but he always paid his dues and lived his Obligation. What you did for him in his last few months, it made him and his Father prouder to carry those dues cards knowing that whatever happened, his Brothers were there.”

Most impressively, 2019 saw a significant increase in first-time donors – more than double the number from our last fiscal year. This is evidence that the mission of our Charities is resonating with a new group of supporters who are essential to sustaining our important work for years to come. Time and time again I hear stories about how we are Changing Lives, Together. In this publication you will meet a few folks whose lives you have changed. You may never meet them, but know they are forever grateful.

Michael C. Russell, CAE Vice President of Charities Scottish Rite Charities

GIVING TUESDAY

Giving Tuesday Scottish Rite, NMJ celebrated Giving Tuesday 2018 in a big way, holding its first ever live telethon streamed on multiple social media platforms. Falling on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Scottish Rite Brothers, led by Commander David A. Glattly, 33°, and Benevolences Committee Chair, George Nakonetschny, 33°, staff members, First Lady Moncia Glattly, and representatives from our charities were on hand to take over 400 call-in donations in this remarkable team effort hosted by Vice President of Charities Michael C. Russell and Grand Master of New York William M. Sardone, 33°. Throughout the night, viewers tuned in to updates from our Scottish Rite Charities, live music, inspirational videos and regular progress updates on our fundraising goal. The evening ended with a celebration of surpassing our goal, raising over $237,000 to support our charities. This memorable event was only possible thanks to so many staff members and volunteers coming together and an incredible show of support from you, our members. Thank you.

GRAND ALMONER'S FUND

Grand Almoner's Fund The Grand Almoner’s Fund is central to the Scottish Rite’s commitment to care for our Brothers, providing assistance to Masons and their families facing unexpected hardships. This program focuses on our Masonic Fraternity and assists: All Freemasons, particularly Scottish Rite Masons within the Northern Jursidiction; Masonic families when a significant, unexpected burden is placed on them; Immediate family members of a deceased Masonic Brother. In Fiscal Year 2019, the Grand Almoner’s Fund distributed $765,416.87 in support for our Brothers in need. A total of 109 Brothers and their families were assisted through this important charity.

You may never meet the Brothers these numbers represent, but they have been lifted out of some of life’s most difficult moments thanks to your support. As one Brother wrote:

Brothers, There are no words to express how grateful I am to you all for the wonderful gift you have given my familiy in our time of need. My family and I were shocked, speechless and overwhelmed by your generosity. Your generous contribution has not only provided my familiy with means to survive during our difficult times, but your donation has given us a tremendous sense of relief, comfort, and the determination to overcome. Brothers, I may not know you. I may never meet you, share a drink with you, or even laugh alongside you, but from the bottom of my heart I want you all to know that I love and admire you. My family and I extend our love, gratitude, and best wishes. Thank you for the relief, the love, and most importantly the hope that you have given my family. May the Great Architect always bless you and your loved ones. Sincerely, A Grateful Brother IMPACT REPORT 2019

WHITE FLOWER SOCIETY

White Flower Society In the last year, First Lady Monica Glattly launched the White Flower Society as a way to strengthen the bonds of support formed among women who come together through Freemasonry. Money donated to the White Flower Society through the Grand Almoner’s Fund is designated exclusively for Masonic widows in need. Membership in the White Flower Society reflects a $5,000 level of giving, either as a one-time gift or a pledge over 5 years. As a token of our appreciation, members of the White Flower Society receive a special white flower brooch and lapel pin. Special thanks to our inaugural White Flower Society members:

ABBOTT SCHOLARSHIPS

Leon M. Abbott Scholarship Fund

The Leon M. Abbott Scholarship Fund has been awarding scholarships to students looking to further their education since 1951.

Jake Vermeulen, PSMC - Indiana

One of Freemasonry’s fundamental principles is the belief in the importance of the educated mind, and the Scottish Rite is committed to fostering the value of education through this charity. Abbott Scholarship recipients include Scottish Rite Masons, young men and women from Scottish Rite familes, and members of Masonic-related youth groups.

2019 Abbott Scholarship recipient Jake Vermeulen had these words of thanks for our members:

I was lucky enough to receive an Abbott Scholarship from the Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and I am incredibly thankful to receive that support from my Brothers. I’m a junior at Wabash College studying Political Science with minors in Religion and Economics. I’m also an Active DeMolay, a Past State Master Councilor, and a Master Mason at Frank S. Land Lodge #758 in Indianapolis, IN. At a time when college costs are increasing rapidly, scholarships like the Abbott Scholarship are crucial in making college an option for many students without leaving them burdened by overwhelming debt. By IMPACT REPORT 2019

lessening the burden on students and their families, scholarships like this allow students to devote themselves to their classes and preparing themselves for their future careers. This investment in the future leaders of our nation, our communities, and our Lodges is a shining example of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s commitment to the future of our fraternity and nation. I am humbled to be connected with an organization that leads with its values like the Scottish Rite does with the Abbott Scholarship, and I cannot thank you enough for your ongoing support of students like me.

YOU'VE NEVER MET...

15

You’ve Never Met Weston... But you helped him overcome dyslexia, and now he’s giving back.

Weston Hock was one of the first three students enrolled at the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Southern Illinois. Today, he’s giving back to the program in a big way, serving as the Vice Chairman of the Southern Illinois Board of Governors. “I wouldn’t be where I am without the Center,” he said. Weston still remembers the challenges he and his family faced before he was diagnosed with dyslexia: “I was struggling with spelling tests, and my parents were really struggling too. We’d spend all night up studying for tests, and then I’d fail them. Everything was more difficult.” After he began attending the Dyslexia Center, things began to change. “I started seeing progress in my spelling and reading,” he said. “I started passing tests. I went to high school and college and was able to graduate.” Weston graduated from the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Engineering in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in construction

management. Today he helps run his father’s construction company. Over the years, Weston returned to attend a few achievement nights at the Southern Illinois Center. When he was asked if he’d be interested in serving on the Center’s Board of Governors, he saw it as a way to thank everyone who had helped him. “I just want to help others,” he said. “I know where it’s gotten me, and I just want to help give back.” Weston is grateful for the Scottish Rite’s commitment to the Children’s Dyslexia Centers and the opportunities he and so many others have been given thanks to the support of our members. “What they do is unbelievable – all the work and money they’ve donated, even just to our little Center – we really appreciate it,” he said. “We wouldn’t be here without them.”

YOU'VE NEVER MET...

You’ve never met Nick… But you helped give him the gift of reading. "Nick has struggled since he began kindergarten. Before coming to the Center, he hated reading and would get very emotional anytime he had to read to us. Now he reads for us with no problem. He is bringing more books home from the school library which is exciting. I tell everyone who will listen how awesome the Center is. They have been wonderful to work with and so supportive."

You’ve never met Jasmine… But you changed her tears into joy. "The Dyslexia Center has had such a positive impact on our daughter. We tried several avenues to help her with her reading, and they all failed. Reading would bring her to tears. After just 7 months at the Center, her reading has improved dramatically. The little girl that once cried when she had to read is now reading chapter books for fun. We would like to thank everyone for investing in Jasmine’s life and making her future a brighter one.”

You’ve never met Catie… But you gave her and her mother the confidence and strength they needed. "This has been an amazing experience, not only for my daughter, but for me as well. The Center has given me more adequate ways to advocate for my daughter in the best way possible. It has given me guidance and strength. Catie is becoming more confident at school and is willing to try new things instead of acting defeated beforehand. I can’t thank everyone there enough. They are angels.”

You’ve never met Jamie… But you helped arm him with the tools he needed to serve our country. Jamie began his tutoring at the Dyslexia Center when he was 14 years old, and he attended faithfully until graduating from the program. His mother said his years at the Center “did wonders for him.” Today Jamie is a mechanic in Electrical and Environmental Systems of aircraft and currently works on the F-16 Fighter jet. This summer he was promoted to a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force.

YOU'VE NEVER MET...

17

You’ve never met Robert… But your support was there when he needed it most. "When I received a life-saving liver transplant a few years ago, it was only the first leg of the battle. What came next was equally as grueling as the transplant itself, but Ill. David A. Glattly S.G.C. and the Scottish Rite Grand Almoner’s Fund were there to help me weather the storm. I will be forever grateful and thankful to the Scottish Rite, especially the Grand Almoner’s Fund for being a beacon of hope. They were there when I needed them the most, just as they continue to be there for any other Scottish Rite Mason and their families in the N.M.J. In turn, I have committed myself to the idea of paying it forward, not by just pledging to give back to the Almoner’s Fund as a member of the Commander’s Circle, but to continue to spread the message of our great institution and be an example of what true Masonry is all about. And I have no doubt that we are and will always live true to our vision, 'We will strive to be a fraternity that fulfills our Masonic obligation to care for our members.'"

You never met Samuel… But you’re helping him further his education. "Thank you so much for the 2019 Scholarship to further my studies at Ohio University. I am working part-time while attending classes and have been successful so far in balancing my studies with my work schedule. I plan on becoming a social studies teacher at a high school and possibly coaching cross country. Thanks again!"

You’ve never met Peter… But his visit to the Museum & Library left him impressed and inspired. "The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is a great place to stop in and learn a little bit more about Scottish Rite Freemasonry in America. The impact it has had on history and culture as well as the way the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction takes pride in its efforts to maintain the artifacts in its possession is evident. It’s well worth the time to see what is offered here!"

You’ve never met Joyce… But you helped her rebuild her house and her life. Joyce was devestated when her husband passed away unexpectedly. Not even two months later, her home was destroyed by a major storm, and she had nowhere to turn. “Without the Masons of Scottish Rite, I would have nothing,” she said. “The money I received from the Masons gave me the strenth to pick myself back up. My husband always said that Masons would take care of me, no matter what. Thank you to the Scottish Rite Masons. You changed this woman’s life, eternally.”

YOU'VE NEVER MET...

You’ve Never Met Josh... But you gave him independence and the mobility he desperately needed.

Ten years ago, the life of Brother Josh Marshbanks, 32°, was changed forever.

Below: Brother Josh Marshbanks is a proud new owner of a 2019 Ford Transit Mobility equipped van.

Then just 22 years old, Josh suffered an accident while swimming that left him completely paralyzed in his arms and legs. His injury was exacerbated by the immediate onset of pneumonia due to the extreme amount of water he had taken in during the accident. “Though doctors were barely optimistic of his survival through the first night, Josh proved he was a fighter, and his will to live carried him through the initial months following his injury,” said his father, Timothey Marshbanks, 33°, who serves as Executive Secretary for the Valley of Detroit. Through intensive therapy, Josh was able to come home a few months after surgery, but he had to adapt to a whole new life in a wheelchair. New challenges continued to present themselves, including finding accessible transportation to his frequent doctor appointments and therapy sessions. With the help of his family, friends, and colleagues, he was able to raise the funds needed

for a mobility accessible van. Eager to pay it forward, Josh partnered with his brother Zac to start a transportation company that provided nonemergency travel for the disabled. But when financial backing pulled out, the business was sold and Zac and Josh were let go. Between his frequent doctor and therapy appointments and the transportation business, his van had over 160,000 miles and had fallen into complete disrepair. When Brothers at the Valley of Detroit heard about the need, a request for assistance from the Almoner’s Fund was shared and approved. This July, Josh Marshbanks received his 2019 Ford Transit mobility-equipped van. The vehicle was paid in full with generous contributions from The Grand Almoner’s Fund, Detroit’s Almoner Fund, and the Michigan Scottish Rite Fund. Josh and his family expressed their gratitude for the generosity of their brethren. “Josh is looking forward to being able to participate more within the fraternity and to continue to pay it forward, as he understands all too well that no man walks alone, but always with a Brother by his side,” said his father, Timothey Marshbanks, 33°.

MUSEUM & LIBRARY

Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library

Established in 1975 by the Scottish Rite Freemasons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library tells the story of Freemasonry and fraternalism in the context of American history. In 2019 the Musuem & Library averaged over 50 visitors per month, including both Masonic Brothers and the general public. The Museum’s Functions Department served over 7,000 individuals from various local organizations.

Current exhibitions on display at the Museum include “100 Years of Demolay,” celebarating the centennial of the Masonic youth organization, and “The Art of American History,” which offers a glimpse into the Museum’s extensive collection of historic prints. In addition, the Van Gorden - Williams Library encourages both serious and casual researchers to consult its holdings and explore the role that Masonic and fraternal organizations have played — and continue to play — in American life.

Above: This photo and certificate are currently on view at the Museum's "100 Years of DeMolay" exhibtion.

The Gift of Service Earlier this year, two Museum staff members took their expertise on the road to assist DeMolay International in Kansas City with a special exhibit in honor of their centennial. Collections Manager, Maureen Harper and Archivist John Coelho were able to share best practices for exhibitions, display methods, and collections storage and management with DeMolay staff. Museum Director Bruce T. Work, 33°, and staff members Jeff Croteau, Director of Library and Archives, and Maureen Harper were recognized this summer and given the honor of “Pro Servito” from DeMolay International, presented by Sovereign Grand Commander David A. Glattly, 33°.

A NEW ENERGY

A New Energy 2019 brought some exciting changes for one of the Scottish Rite’s most strongly supported charities. Here are some highlights:

A New Brand

A New Website

This summer, Scottish Rite, NMJ and the Children’s Dyslexia Centers proudly launched a full rebrand of the program, complete with a new logo. Inspired by a thriving tree, the leaves on the new logo symbolize the growth and depth every student in our program experiences. These leaves grow from a Center’s branches and are supported by the base of Scottish Rite Freemasonry and its supporters. The full brand system was developed to give our corporate and local Dyslexia Center teams the opportunity to market their program and bring in support for our students in new and creative ways.

A crucial part of sharing the CDC’s new branding with the world and moving it forward was developing a modernized website. The completely redesigned Children’s Dyslexia Centers website, also launched this year, better visually reflects the amazing work being done throughout the organization while providing helpful digital resources for parents, highlighting upcoming events, and housing a simplified online donation form. Visit the new website at ChildrensDyslexiaCenters.org.

A New Director of Operations

IMPACT REPORT 2019

Along with the new branding rollout, Brother David L. Sharkis, 33° (pictured left), was named the new Director of Operations for the Children’s Dyslexia Centers, Inc. Brother Sharkis has worked on behalf of our dyslexia centers in Connecticut for two decades, and is now dedicating himself full-time as director of operations to help “reboot” the CDC and guide it into a new phase of growth. He brings to the Centers a varied and impressive background of more than 30 years in engineering, quality control, and talent management. “Being given the opportunity to lead this effort is a dream come true – I consider it the crowning moment of my professional career,” Brother Sharkis said.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

23

2019 Highlights Despite some exciting changes, the Children’s Dyslexia Centers remain committed to the philanthropic pledges made by the Scottish Rite 25 years ago: To help children with dyslexia learn to read and to reach their full potential; To help their families end the frustration, guilt and disruption caused by dyslexia; To help communities by developing Children’s Dyslexia Centers to help students succeed in and out of school. These efforts continued as our program expanded in 2019.

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Upper Wisconsin’s Superior campus opened in January 2019 to help serve more children with dyslexia in Wisconsin.

In January, United States Senator, Richard Blumenthal attended the grand opening of the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Bridgeport, CT.

In Illinois, the Chicago Center expanded to two additional locations in Palatine and Lakeview to help alleviate the Center’s wait list of more 70 children. Operations began in early 2019.

Committed to Excellence Our program’s clinical excellence was also recognized in the past year – Children’s Dyslexia Centers Clinical Director Carin Illig (pictured right) received one of the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council’s two Innovator Awards for outstanding MSLE Professional. IMSLEC’s Innovator Awards honor individuals who demonstrate excellence in the teaching of or support of multisensory structured language education.

Pam Rogers This year, on July 29th, we lost a very special member of our staff here at Supreme Council. Pamela J. Rogers joined our team in March of 1999, and for over 20 years she worked diligently to support the cause of Scottish Rite in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Serving in various roles over the years, Pam was always a committed and passionate member of our staff, but more importantly, a dear friend. Pam was loved and will be deeply missed.
