President's Perspective Our strategic plan outlines five pivotal objectives for growth for Ursuline Academy of New Orleans to reach by 2019: facility, sponsorship, brand identity, and enrollment. In 2027, Ursuline celebrates its 300th birthday. Beginning in the new calendar year, anticipating our tricentennial is the focus of the next strategic plan designed to move the Academy forward, ensuring sustainability for future generations of young women to come.

Alumnae involvement is vital to the continued success of Ursuline Academy. Contributions to the Serviam Annual Fund are not merely gifts to your alma mater; they are advances in science curriculum, implemented from kindergarten through twelfth grade, which includes robotics, computer science, and engineering. They are the historic preservation of our 11.5acre campus, funding maintenance, and beautification projects in the buildings we, and generations of students before us, walk through today.

The Serviam Annual Fund is Ursuline’s fund, and it is our responsibility to grow it. On page 15, you can see the significant progress we have made this year, while also understanding how far we have left to go. The infographic registers a life-long dedication to Serviam and the continuation of the Ursuline Spirit of giving as defined by St. Angela's Counsels.

Our strategic plan calls upon the entire Ursuline community to participate in preserving and promoting the Academy as we progress toward our 300th birthday. “Attending Ursuline definitely changed my life.

Teenage years can be difficult for everyone, and I was certainly no exception. However, when I look back on my time at Ursuline, I feel the deepest sense of happiness and gratitude. I love teaching here now because I hope to help create the same amazing experience for my students today.”

“I actually wanted to transfer to Ursuline when I was in high school, but my mom wouldn't let me. Had I transferred, I would have been a Sioux, and I would have loved it.

I think that the Sioux mascot well represents the family atmosphere at the school. The class really was sort of a ‘tribe’ because they always looked out for each other no matter what, and treated each other like family, not just classmates.”

They are determined, devoted, charismatic, and curious. A fellow alumna's husband once said, ‘You can always tell an Ursuline girl - but you can't tell her much!’ I think that sums it up quite nicely.”

“I feel that I am home, again. I spent my middle school years here and the best friends I have today are those girls I met at Ursuline. The room in which I teach social studies is the same room in which I learned social studies. The halls, the classrooms, and even some of the faculty were here when I walked this campus as a student. I have such fond memories of Ursuline and I look forward to making many more.”

“My favorite location on campus is the courtyard. It is great to have windows that I can open with a courtyard view, and I like to sit in the courtyard for lunch.”

There’s no denying that Ursuline alumnae make a difference in their communities. Whether it’s helping a friend in need, volunteering at their church, or heading up a non-profit, Ursuline graduates are change makers in all areas of life. It’s part of their education having learned the importance of Serviam from an early age. The realization that they have the power to do good in many different ways grows each year, and continues beyond their years at Ursuline, becoming a way of life.

“We're partnered with five local nursing home facilities, where we plan events or make visits to give the elderly residents enjoyment and foster intergenerational companionship.”

Hanan Rimawi, a 2014 graduate and proud Sioux, is a prime example. Now in her senior year at Tulane University, Hanan, a Dean’s Scholarship recipient, continues to make time to help others, while pursuing a double major in neuroscience and public health. In addition to volunteering with Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, she has worked in the Middle East with displaced populations, and tutors with an organization called Paper Airplanes where she currently holds a staff role on their public relations team. With the help of friends, Hanan spearheaded the project, Bridging Generations, at Tulane.

Most recently this insightful, giving, and committed young woman completed a very prestigious eight-month internship with Dr. Alaa Murabit, the UN High-Level Commissioner on Health Employment and Economic Growth. One of 17 Sustainable Development Goal Global Advocates appointed by the UN Secretary General, Dr. Murabit is a leading international voice for women’s rights and peace. She was named one of "25 Women Under 25 to Watch” by Newsweek and a 2017 Forbes “30 under 30.”

Hanan was one of four interns selected from a pool of 100 international applications. The internship provided Hanan the opportunity to learn more about policy, international peace and security, global health, and human rights. It also presented her with the chance to network and develop new skills with an

influential role model who continues to impact human rights around the world.

Hanan said she was immersed in subjects that spanned many areas, including human trafficking in Canada, the evolution and development of education, the history of United States and North Korea relations, the interplay between social media and national security, the Flint water crisis, and the atomic bomb. “It goes on – and that kept my learning active. I poured over research articles and data sheets and editorials, and it was exciting. Sometimes I was so absorbed in material that I’d flash my clock a quick glance and be stunned to find it’d be only an hour or two before my alarm startled me rudely awake for an 8:00 a.m. class. Somehow this stuff was better than caffeine at keeping my eyes from drooping over!”

Hanan’s experiences helped her grow personally, too. “It’s helped rekindle in me a childlike excitement for learning, my time management skills have improved by

With the internship having such a significant human rights focus, Hanan credited her experience at Ursuline in preparing her role as an intern. “My wonderful teachers at UA encouraged my interest in human rights; they helped me to understand that social issues are fundamentally human rights issues.

Generous support from peers, teachers, and faculty built up my confidence, without which I might not have applied. Thanks to Ursuline, I was also well-equipped for the hard work that was required of me.”

Hanan plans to pursue a career in public health and humanitarian aid in conflict areas around the world, likely in the Middle

East-North Africa region. She also hopes to continue her involvement in elder care.

Hanan believes Dr. Murabit’s tough love approach helped accelerate her learning, growth, and confidence. “To get to call Dr. Murabit – someone with a lightning mind, a heart of gold, and a soaring vision for a more equitable and sustainable future – a mentor is a privilege for which I’ll be forever grateful.”

And Dr. Murabit only shared equally as fond feelings for working with our Ursuline girl, stating: “Hanan was such a needed contribution to our mentorship programme. I selected Hanan personally, among hundreds of wonderful candidates, because of her ability to translate complex ideas and emotions into a tangible and understandable perspective. It’s a rare leadership quality; to uphold the legitimacy of the data and empirical evidence and yet still elevate the discourse by leveraging compassion and emotional intelligence. I’m very proud to have been part of her journey and eager to see Hanan go from strength to strength.”

“The nuns brought with them recipes from their homeland of France and adapted them to the native food resources. For instance, the praline was a favorite candy in the area of Orleans, France. It is said to have been first concocted by Jean Dulac, the chef of the Duc de Praslin, who was very fond of sweets, although there are several versions of the origin of this particular sweet. The French candy was made with almonds, but in New Orleans the nuns found none of these nuts but a plentiful supply of pecans. To the Ursulines, then, New Orleans owes its variant of the original recipe, called the pecan praline, which has remained a specialty of the city throughout the years.”

Career Shadow Day

University Partnerships Expand Real-Life Learning

One of many goals within the mission and values of our school is the promise to all girls that Ursuline Academy “prepares them for life in a global society.” This commitment, combined with key program objectives outlined in our Strategic Plan, was the inspiration for establishing new and innovative ways for an Ursuline girl to expand her learning beyond the walls of State Street.

When looking to engage girls in STEM fields, research shows that girls prefer the ability to work in collaboration with each other. Female students report having a better experience when working with other students and are more likely to finish an assignment, as well as persist in a STEM course if they can work collaboratively.

Through a lot of hard work and communication, the Fall 2017 semester brought with it an exciting partnership between Ursuline Academy and The University of New Orleans that is proving to offer authentic, university-level research opportunities to our high school students. As a part of the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center-Gulf Ecological Monitoring and Modeling (LADCGEMM) project, Ursuline students have the opportunity to work with UNO mentors in analyzing data collected from the Northern Gulf of Mexico in order to better analyze the marine mammal population affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The project 10

allows girls to experience marine acoustics, biology, physics, engineering, math, and computational predictive models and is incorporated into the curriculum of several high school math and science classes.

In addition to working with UNO, the high school Robotics Team is partnering with the Engineering and Physics Department at Tulane University to build a competitive robot for the FIRST Robotics Competition.

FIRST was founded to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, and the Robotics Competition challenges students with strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week timeline to design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It is as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.

Tulane students will mentor our Ursuline girls in their design and build process, as well as provide training for team members to use the Tulane Makerspace. The makerspace includes a machine shop, woodworking shop, and rapid prototyping area. Under the supervision of Ursuline staff and Tulane mentors, Ursuline students will be able to use the rapid prototyping area featuring several 3D printers and laser cutters. Girls will also be able to design parts that will later be manufactured in the machine shop by the Tulane students. To further complete the process and prepare for competition, the team will also be partnering with industry professionals from Laitram Corporation/ Intralox who will assist us with the design and building process.

We are hoping this is just the start in a line of initiatives which will help spark a greater passion for learning within our students. An Ursuline girl is destined to be a leader in her society and within the workforce, and it is our job to give her the tools needed to reach that destiny.

Back in October, all 84 Senior Macs had the privilege of being placed for Career Shadow Day hosted by the High School Counseling Office. Each student was able to request a career she is interested in–everything from dermatology to fashion, criminology to photography–to be placed with a professional in the field in order to shadow them at their workplace and see what life is like beyond the walls of school.

Parents of alumnae were wonderful enough to participate in this special day, and even parents from the Class of 2018 volunteered their businesses for the day. We were also lucky enough to have four of our wonderful alumnae participate in Career Shadow Day! Thank you,

religious figures, and seminal ritings – shaped the citizens, Religious Exhibit at the Smithsonian munities, laws and traditions of the newborn country.”

JEFFERSON LETTER

In the American History Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., an exhibit entitled “Religion in Early America” opened June 28, 2017 and is set to run through July 3, 2018. This exhibit contains artifacts and displays from various religious groups and persons who came to America and settled here. It explores themes of religious diversity, freedom and growth from the colonial era through the 1840s.

The exhibition includes artifacts from various religious groups: Christian denominations, Jews, Muslims, Native Americans, Shakers, Africans, etc. The growth of American Catholicism is reflected in items from Archbishop Carroll, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange (Oblate Sisters of Providence), and others.

An iron cross made in 1634 is prominently displayed. This cross was made from materials on board the two ships (the Ark and the Dove) that brought the first English Catholics to Maryland.

Because our Ursuline Community in New Orleans holds the letter from Thomas Jefferson written in 1804 concerning the religious rights and privileges of the sisters, the Smithsonian requested that this letter be lent to them as part of the exhibit. Because of this loan, we were sent a special invitation to attend the opening reception of “Religion in Early America.”

Although we were not able to attend this function in June, I had an opportunity to visit the museum three months later. Peter Manseau, the curator of the exhibition, conducted a special tour for me and my companions, identifying each object in the display and its history. This noteworthy exhibit is the first of its kind at the Smithsonian, and the personal tour given

by Peter Manseau was very special. He expressed his gratitude for our loan of the Thomas Jefferson letter and he encouraged others to come and view the exhibit. Before leaving, he presented me with a copy of the book Articles of Devotion which contains descriptions of each item on display as well as many photographs. Because the letter from Thomas Jefferson is part of a rotating exhibit within the larger display, it was only shown for three months, from September 12-November 14, 2017

A quote from that book summarizes, in a few words, what is contained in the exhibit: “This book explores how these diverse treasures – along with key houses of worship, influential religious figures, and seminal writings – shaped the citizens, communities, laws and traditions of the newborn country.”

For those who can get to Washington D.C. during this year, the American History Museum is the place to visit for “Religion in Early America.” For those who wish to view the items in this display through the pages of the book Articles of Devotion this, too, is an excellent way to acquaint oneself with the founders of our country and the faith that they professed. For our Church and religious communities who are featured in the display, it is a source of pride to have a national focus on what they accomplished in early America.

The Rainbow Crossing Miracle

The Ursulines had not attributed any major miracle to Our Lady of Prompt Succor since the 1815 victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans, after which General Andrew Jackson himself came to the Convent to thank the nuns for their prayers and to acknowledge the role of divine intervention in his triumph. Certain that the newly crowned Virgin wanted to become better known in her city, the Archbishop encouraged the faithful to pray to her for miracles.

Her response was prompt. Before the end of the 19th century, two important miracles were added to the Archdiocesan records.

On the 5th day of the novena his condition had changed, and he was on his way to recovery. The doctors and priests affirmed that there was no doubt that his cure was “absolutely miraculous.”

The first was on behalf of Bishop Theophile Meerschaert of the Oklahoma Territory, one of the Prelates who had presided at the crowning. One month after the crowning, doctors diagnosed the Bishop with Bright’s disease and gave him one week to live.

Hearing that diagnosis, he immediately left for New Orleans to solicit the help of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, and the Ursulines started a novena for his rapid recovery.

That night, the passengers aboard prayed to Our Lady of Prompt Succor, asking her to provide a way to return in order to bury Archbishop Janssens in a proper Church ceremony. The next morning a ship sailing for New Orleans, The Hudson, passed the outgoing vessel. A rainbow appeared in the sky as the transferral of the Archbishop’s body began, and it was completed under the arch of that rainbow.

The people of New Orleans considered this “miracle at sea” evidence of Our Lady of Prompt Succor’s capacity for hasty intercession.

The second miracle, illustrated in the ‘Rainbow Crossing,’ involved Archbishop Janssens. On June 9, 1897, he set sail on the Creole for the Netherlands and France to raise funds for the Archdiocese. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack during the first night of the voyage.

Shortly after the incident, a picture was painted titled “The Transferral of an Archbishop at Sea” to commemorate the providential appearance of The Hudson.

In 1898 Sister Ste. Helene Forstall, an Ursuline at the Academy, painted a copy of that picture, and her painting is the one you can see to this day at the entrance of the Ursuline Museum in the Academy on State Street in New Orleans.

The Chancellor of the Archdiocese implored the Captain to return the body of the Archbishop to New Orleans, but he refused.

The Archbishop would have to be buried at sea, that is, his body would be wrapped in cloth and dumped into the ocean waters.

Nelson Mandela viewed education as a way to change the world.

Our Ursuline Sisters, upon arrival in New Orleans, understood this truth and put it to practice, educating all women, no matter race or socio-economic status. Beginning in 1727, Ursuline girls carried their education out to their children, church, and community to change our society.

As I speak with our alumnae, our women profess the blessing of their Ursuline education. An Ursuline education is more than academics but speaks to the heart; an education of service and compassion.

An Ursuline education speaks to women, empowering students and helping to develop confidence. An Ursuline education is one of expectations: our students leave knowing they are charged with making a difference in the world. Our alumnae also understand the gift of diversity that comes from the Ursuline experience. Those who have walked the halls before want to ensure an Ursuline education continues for all women in the future.

Giving the gift of an education is something I hold dear and have dedicated my work to. Education was a bond I held with my late husband, Don. Both of us believed the opportunity for life-long learning changed the world. Each of us took a path of learning that received support from a scholarship.

Our scholarship gifts made a difference in our ability to continue learning, and Don’s love of education continues today through scholarships at both Ursuline and at his college alma mater.

The legacy of a scholarship opens the door to change the world through each recipient. In the last five years, Ursuline has grown in the opportunity to give partial scholarships to our women. Merit and needbased scholarships have helped fund our high school girls’ education. In the past four years, our named scholarships have increased by 27 scholarships. In addition, we provide merit-based scholarships for students who receive a 96 or above on the high school placement test. Our average number of recipients for merit-based scholarships is 20-25 over the high school years. A legacy scholarship is available for two alumnae legacies each year.

HOMECOMING

Hon. Nancy Amato Konrad 1959 Procedure, and Legal Ethics. Judge Konrad began her law career through private practice where she served for 15 years before joining Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court. She served in Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court for nearly 33 years before retiring. Judge Konrad is the first woman elected to a parish-wide office and the bench in Jefferson Parish.

Honorable Nancy Amato Konrad 1959 has been chosen by the Ursuline Alumnae Association of New Orleans, with the approval of the Academy President and the Ursuline Sisters, to be the 2017 Ursuline Distinguished Alumna. This award is annually bestowed upon a graduate of Ursuline Academy or Ursuline College of New Orleans who demonstrates the core values and ideals of an Ursuline education in all aspects of her life. Since 1986, 49 women have received this honor, making it one of Ursuline’s most prestigious awards.

Judge Konrad attended Ursuline Academy for 12 years and graduated as a Skipperette of 1959.

During her time at Ursuline, she was Student Body President. After graduating from Ursuline, she attended Loyola University New Orleans where she received both a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Juris Doctorate.

While at Loyola, she was a member of Phi Phi Phi Sorority, Loyola Law Review Assistant, National Moot Court Team Assistant, and was a recipient of awards in Admiralty, Civil 16

One of her most significant accomplishments during her judicial career was the implementation of the Louisiana Children’s Code Project. She was the chairperson of the committee that compiled and rewrote all substantive and procedural laws affecting the juvenile court jurisdiction. The Project spanned almost five years and involved the work of 65 diverse professionals from around the state who committed over 15,000 volunteer hours to codify the laws affecting Louisiana’s children.

The charge of the Louisiana Children’s Code Project was to construct a comprehensive code from an assortment of laws scattered through 89 separate titles and codes, resolve ambiguities and conflicts in the existing law, and revise these laws when necessary to bring Louisiana statutes in conformity with state and federal constitutional decisions and regulations. The Code was passed into law in 1991. The Code continues to be revised. In fact, Judge Konrad still serves on the Children’s Code Revision Committee of the Louisiana Law Institute. Other notable contributions include being one of two Louisiana courts selected by the Louisiana Supreme Court to pilot a program for citizen review of foster care. Judge Konrad was the Co-Lead Judge of the Louisiana Task Force for Foster Care Reform. She was also the chairperson of the Juvenile Judges’ Benchbook Committee which published a book in 1985 to organize all existing substantive and procedural

juvenile law into a one-volume reference for use by all judges in the juvenile jurisdiction in the State of Louisiana. She also served on the Louisiana Children’s Cabinet. Because of her extensive work in juvenile justice and the reform initiative, she was recognized by the Louisiana State Bar Foundation as its 2004 Distinguished Jurist.

In addition to her many accomplishments, Judge Konrad has had much community involvement including: former Chairperson of Ursuline Academy’s Board of Trustees, former member of Loyola University New Orleans’ Alumni Board, Emeritus member of Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, former Board Member of Stop Child Abuse & Neglect, former Board Member of YWCA Crisis Care Center, former Board Member of Coliseum Medical Center, former Advisory Board Member of A Child’s Wish of Greater New Orleans and a former Board Member of the Ronald McDonald House. She presently serves on the Jefferson Parish Children & Youth Planning Board and is a member of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council. As for her professional involvement, she has been involved with the Louisiana State Bar Association, Jefferson Parish Bar Association, American Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity, American Judges Association, National Association of Women Judges, Louisiana Association of Elected Women and the Loyola University New Orleans Law Visiting Committee. In 1992, she was awarded the 17th annual Adjutor Hominum Award by Loyola University New Orleans President’s Council, the highest honor bestowed by their Alumni Association.

describes Nancy as “one of the most loyal members of her class. She can be counted on to attend all activities and to support Ursuline in everything.” Her devotion to both her faith and to Our Lady of Prompt Succor has given her the strength and wisdom to carry out such an important role as Juvenile Judge. Madeleine Simmons Blessey ’59, a classmate, feels that “she always dealt with difficult situations in a fair, even-handed manner, calling upon her knowledge of the law while exercising her steady judicial temperament, with a spine of steel and yet a heart of gold. Nancy Amato Konrad is a person of knowledge, wisdom, and great humanity.” Her professionalism and passion have impacted many lives throughout her career. She has had a positive influence on many people, especially children. Another classmate, Kathleen O’Donnell Gendusa ’59 says, “She has always been a loving and caring woman and has helped many people to find a better life for themselves.” She embodies the Ursuline ideals of courtesy, loyalty, and courage in all aspects of her life. Ursuline Academy of New Orleans is proud to call Honorable Nancy Amato Konrad a Distinguished Alumna.

Alumnae Homecoming On Sunday, November 5, we were lucky enough to share the day with reunion classes from the College Class of 1952 through the Academy Class of 2012 as we celebrated our Alumnae Homecoming. The morning Mass also brought us the honor of awarding our 2017 Distinguished Alumna, Honorable Nancy Amato Konrad, ’59, as well as the passing of the gavel from one Alumnae Board President to the next. It was a beautiful day to enjoy brunch, good music, and friends in the Courtyard.

AROUND STATE STREET

Our 21st annual Herb Blessing brought us the first Academy Mass of the year with our new chaplain, Fr. Peter Finney. Early Childhood helped us release ladybugs into our beautiful garden to keep the herbs healthy.

The 10th annual Ursuline Pink Game was a huge success and we were able to "spook out cancer" by raising over $9,300 for the East Jefferson General Hospital Breast Care Center!

Senior Macs, Christian Shepard, Karrington Knight, and Natalie Richard, are one step closer to graduation after Senior Ring Ceremony followed by a beautiful morning in the Courtyard with friends and family.

Through Project Lead The Way (PLTW), Kindergarten girls practiced their engineering skills after reading The Three Little Pigs and paired up to build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks that would withstand the Big Bad Wolf trying to blow them down.

A new tradition brings us 1727 Day, where we celebrate our Ursuline pride and history on the 27th of any month we are in school. The entire Academy wears Ursuline gear and at the end of the day we gather together in the courtyard for a few moments of prayer as a community.

YVONNE ALCIATORE BLOUNT was honored at the 2017 Southern Dominican Province Gala for her lifetime of recognizing the spiritual needs of the New Orleans community. Yvonne is a native of New Orleans, the only child of Roy L. Alciatore and Mary P. Duggan Alciatore and a descendent of Antoine Alciatore, founder of Antoine’s Restaurant, the oldest family-run restaurant in the U.S. Blount is a fourth-generation restaurateur, and her son Rick is the current CEO. She is a member of the 1776 Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has been a member of St. Dominic Parish for more than 60 years and has served as a lay Dominican for more than 50 years.

GWEN THOMPKINS was recognized as a “Top Female Achiever” in New Orleans Magazine. The magazine describes her as a “bonafide journalist” who has many accomplishments. Gwen listed Edna Mae Mock, former long-time beloved Ursuline drama teacher, as her mentor.

Service and social justice are part of the university mission. On April 25, the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center in the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law presented 2017 Public Service Awards to students, alumni, staff, and faculty. Each year, the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center presents awards to students, alumni, staff, and faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice and serving the needs of the disadvantaged.

As a Loyola alumna, Chan has served as a staff attorney in the family law domestic violence unit at Southeast Louisiana Legal Services. She has represented countless lowincome New Orleans families in family law and housing matters.

SOFIA GIORDANO sailed for Ursuline and is now the team captain for the Loyola U ni v e r si t y New Orleans sailing team. ALANNA AUSTIN '17, who was also a member of the Ursuline sailing team, is now a freshman at Tulane and sails for the Green Wave. They sailed against each other for the first time over the weekend at a regatta hosted by Tulane. Sofia has been accepted to the SEA Semester Pacific Reef Expedition and will spend a month this summer sailing 2,700 miles from Tahiti to Hawaii aboard the SSV Robert C. Seamans while stopping in various islands to study the effects of climate change.

In 1948, Sister Marie McCloskey, of the Ursuline College Class of 1936, started one of Ursuline Academy's most spirited traditions. She explained the idea behind Rally Night in a letter: "Our aim, as it is today, at Ursuline was to develop an integrated person: spiritual and academic development were of prime importance, but the girls must be exposed to the arts and athletics, and above all must support each other. Thus was born the original Rally Night. The theme for that very first Rally Night was "All For One...One For All!" Congratulations to the Junior Skips as the overall winner of the 70th annual Rally!
