Dear Ursuline Family, When you open this edition of The Ursu.lines, you will once again be reminded of the many traditions of the oldest girls school in the United States. The Ursuline Sisters have always believed that educated women make a difference in the world. They’ve devoted nearly three centuries to educating young women in New Orleans, regardless of race, ethnicity or background, setting the tone and standards for the Ursuline Academy of today.

We continue the great traditions of an Ursuline education, but in context of the 21st century. Technology opens doors to countless resources for our girls with the touch of their fingertips. The start of the 2014-2015 school year opened a new chapter for the Academy.

We implemented a 1:1 program to give our students endless opportunities and necessary skills for the future. Our teachers have the latest resources for instruction and assessment.

An Ursuline education stresses development of the whole person.

While a strong academic program is essential, a well-rounded education develops the unique gifts of each young woman. The Academy’s fine arts program is second-to-none in the city of New Orleans. With opportunities in choir, recorder consort, orchestra, visual arts and performing arts, our students, beginning at the age of two, have ample opportunities to discover, refine and explore the fine arts.

Educating women may change in the materials, curriculum and resources we use, but the spiritual and emotional formation of each young girl remains as important today as it was in 1727. Instilling the values of courtesy, loyalty and courage is as important now as ever. As the oldest Catholic school in the United States, our first charge is to provide a holistic education to young women.

As we educate the next generation of women, we all have the responsibility to pass on the treasure of an Ursuline education that began 287 years ago. Listed in this magazine are those who help make an Ursuline education possible. Thank you to our parents, alumnae, faculty and friends who continue the Ursuline tradition of spiritual formation and development of the whole woman as we move toward our 300th birthday.

SISTER MARY ANNE HOLMES, OSU

Sr. Mary Anne Holmes joined the Ursuline New Orleans Community as Prioress of the Ursuline Sisters during the 2013-2014 school year.

Sr. Mary Anne is a native of Galveston, Texas. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Galveston. She later attended the University of St. Thomas in Houston for one year before entering the Ursuline Novitiate at Crystal City, Missouri.

After making her religious profession of vows, she earned her bachelor's degree at the Ursuline College of New Rochelle at New Rochelle, New York. She later completed graduate studies in Institutional Administration at Creighton University in Omaha.

Sr. Mary Anne began teaching at Ursuline Academy in Dallas, Texas. In the years following, she served in various Ursuline communities and ministries in Texas, Minnesota and Missouri.

Before coming to New Orleans, she was at the Ursuline Generalate in Rome, assisting with community services in finances, technology and other duties.

Ursuline has been her life and she has truly been happy wherever she has served. “God has blessed me and I am very grateful," said Sr. Mary Anne. "Now I enjoy all the Ursuline connections here in New Orleans, as well as the culture, food and Mardi Gras!”

Upgrades: FITNESS AND WELLNESS CENTER

Caring for the

MIND + BODY+ SPIRIT The Ursuline Academy Fitness and Wellness Center — a renovation of the historic 1935 gymnasium along with the construction of a new addition — was designed to be the epicenter of complete health, improving the emotional, physical and intellectual well-being of the UA community.

The 17,242 square foot facility includes a dance/yoga studio, indoor elevated track, practice volleyball and basketball court, fully-equipped weight room, extensive cardio room, multi-media classroom, and athletic conference room. A new softball field, batting cage, and courtyard are just steps away from the facility.

“For 287 years the Ursuline tradition has consistently challenged the conventions of the times,” said Karen McNay, Academy President. “As we continue with that 6

innovative spirit today, the Academy embraces a new vision for education of the ‘whole person.’ The Ursuline Academy Fitness and Wellness Center will focus on complete wellness — mind, body and spirit — for students ranging from Toddler 2 through 12th grade. We are thrilled to offer new programs and opportunities that will equip our students with the knowledge and resources needed to achieve a state of mental and physical well-being.”

The 7,530 square foot addition was named for Ursuline Sister Marie McCloskey C'36, former Ursuline high school principal, physical education teacher, and alumna.

Academy’s 16,985 square foot Ourso Athletic Center by a new courtyard named in honor of Ursuline Alumna Joan Gisevius Johnson '61. The courtyard provides students with a private outdoor location to do homework or socialize with their peers. Indoors, a classroom named in memory of alumna Nia Robertson ’97, coaches’ offices, and an athletic conference room further enhance the complex.

Equipment and resources focus on age-appropriate programs in nutrition, fitness, personal safety, preventative health, body composition, stress management, meditation, and relationship building. Student athletes participating in the Academy’s eleven sports programs benefit from additional resources for training, strategizing and practicing.

Students that do not participate in the athletic program have opportunities to schedule workouts and attend other fitnessrelated classes. After-school activities and classes such as yoga, dance and gymnastics are available to interested

students. Wellness programs such as boot camp and yoga became available to parents and alumnae in spring of 2014 and more opportunities are expected to be added.

Ursuline's original gymnasium, initially constructed by well-known New Orleans builder George J. Glover, has a rich history as a venue for athletic contests and theatrical productions for both the high school and Ursuline College students. It was home to the first Ursuline Rally Night in October of 1948, and continued to serve Ursuline as a facility for health and physical education classes as well as volleyball and basketball games through 2004. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina blew through New Orleans with enough force to breach the levee system, the historic building was left derelict. The opening of the Fitness and Wellness Center represents the restoration and reopening of the final Ursuline building damaged as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

what's in a name?

The Ursuline Academy Fitness and Wellness Center Addition, Courtyard, Classroom and Softball Field are named after four extraordinary women, each special to the Academy in her own way.

Miss Pat Taylor C'50 Softball Field The softball field was named in honor of Patricia Jane Taylor, College Class of 1950. She was a physical education teacher; coach of many sports including softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, track and field, cross country, and soccer; athletic director; and a friend and mentor to generations of students.

She also gave swimming lessons to countless children throughout the New Orleans area.

Sister Marie McCloskey, OSU, C’36 Addition The new addition was named in honor of Sister Marie McCloskey, College Class of 1936, former high school principal, physical education teacher, and Rally Night co-creator.

She began Rally in 1948 as a way to encourage peer support and bonding among members of each class and to replace high school sororities, which at the time were popular but exclusive and divisive. She suggested each class choose its own name, theme, colors and symbols. She presented the idea to high school P.E. teacher Clayre Ahern Crook who planned and produced the event that follows the same format to this day.

Joan Gisevius Johnson ’61 Courtyard The Fitness and Wellness Center Courtyard was named in honor of Joan Gisevius Johnson ’61, a 1996 Distinguished Alumna and former Board of Trustees member.

Her children, Michael Thomas Johnson and Jennifer Johnson Molina '85, (pictured left) made the gift in her name.

Nia Robertson ’97 Classroom Nia Robertson '97 was a passionate and caring young woman who saw the good in everyone. Iggie’s House, Inc. – The Nia Robertson Foundation chose to dedicate the classroom in her memory because it is in line with "the goals of the foundation – to inspire collective ideas, promote leadership skills, and create cross cultural awareness toward building confidence; to ensure the betterment of the community and future of tomorrow for all young people."

FOREVER IN Our heartS "Miss Taylor was one of my first nonparental mentors. Though she was competitive and loved to win, she never exemplified a win-at-all-cost attitude.

Her professionalism and camaraderie with her opposing coaches during games left a lasting impression on me. As I have grown older, I have come to realize that it is truly about how one plays the game.

PATRICIA JANE "PAT" TAYLOR (1929-2014) Patricia “Pat” Jane Taylor, a lifetime resident of New Orleans and parishioner of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the age of 84. She was a graduate of Holy Name, Mercy Academy, Ursuline College, and Loyola University. A retired Catholic educator, Pat Taylor was a teacher, coach and athletic director during her 50-plus years at Ursuline Academy. In addition, for over 50 years she taught swimming to generations of families.

She also served as teacher and coach at the Academy of the Sacred Heart.

During practice (basketball was my favorite sport), we would practice layups and foul shots at the end. She would always tell us, 'Never leave on a missed shot!' That message stuck, and to this day I always try to finish a task, a meeting, or some other project on a positive note even when the situation is difficult.

As gregarious as she was, Miss Taylor also possessed a quieter, deeply religious side. Her devotion to God and Our Lady of Prompt Succor was known to all of us who were coached by her.

Miss Taylor loved the outdoors and her favorite sport was softball, so it is fitting that the new field be named after her. The only thing that will be missing is her 'Way to go!' echoing from the coaches bench."

Rally Night!

THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS Every October around the Feast of St. Ursula, there is a night where loud shouts and shrieks echo through the streets of Uptown. The walls of the Ourso Athletic Center seem to shake from the noise. The bleachers are packed tightly with Ursuline students forming an endless sea of Macs, Sioux, Skips and Leps. Adults brave enough to attend often wear ear plugs. The energy is unmistakable. They have been practicing and plotting, working hard and keeping their plans a secret. They are ready to compete. They are ready for victory. They are ready for Rally Night.

Generations of Ursuline alumnae look back fondly on their memories of Rally. It is one of many treasured traditions that make Ursuline special.

HISTORY OF A GREAT TRADITION The Feast of St. Ursula, Patroness of the Ursuline Order, was traditionally celebrated at Ursuline with a Mass and a free day. Everything changed in 1948 when Sr. Marie McCloskey, who was the principal at the time, came up with the idea of Rally Night. She explained her idea to high school

P.E. teacher Clayre Ahern Crook, who embraced it wholeheartedly and went on to plan and produce the event that we know and love today.

The focus of Rally Night was to encourage peer support and bonding among class members, while providing an alternative to high school sororities, popular at the time and believed by Sr. Marie to be un-Christian. The new event would include categories to appeal to a variety of interests and skills: volleyball intramurals (athletics), a skit (drama), a poster (visual arts), songs and cheers (music). Classes were encouraged to choose their own name, colors, symbols and theme.

Subsequent Rally Nights were coordinated and conducted by the Academy’s Physical Education Department. Teacher and coach Pat Taylor C’50 became an integral part of the planning in 1950 through 1955, and then again in 1967 into the 1990’s, working with the assistance of teacher and coach Marta Bott. Ms. Bott carried on this tradition until her untimely passing in 2008. Today, the Academy honors the legacy of these former leaders by remaining true to Rally Night’s objectives and practices.

THE FIRST CLASS MASCOTS!

RALLY FUN FACTS

For the first Rally in 1948, the seniors chose “The ’49ers” since that was their graduation year, the juniors chose “Leprechauns,” the sophomores were the “Sioux,” and the freshmen were the “Valkyries.”

“The ’49ers” did not pass on their name, as it was only relevant to their class. In 1950, the Leprechaun seniors began the passing on of their name to their little sisters at the end of their freshman year. The “Valkyries" became the "Rebelles." The “Merry Macs” ultimately replaced the “Rebelles” in 1952–53, and in 1956 “Skipperettes” replaced the “Leprechauns.” In 1995–96, the Leprechaun name was reintroduced for the first year of high school only — not to be passed on.

• The success of Ursuline’s spirit and relationship-building Rally Night inspired other New Orleans schools to create similar activities.

• The event began on campus in the old gymnasium (current Fitness and Wellness Center). As it grew in popularity with grade school attendees and their families, it was moved to the blacktop outside of the gym. In 1968, the event was moved off-campus to Jesuit High School’s gymnasium. For the next 10 years, it was held at the gym of the Academy of the Sacred Heart. In 1979, Rally Night was held at the gym of De La Salle High School, where it remained for the next 20 years. It is currently held in the Academy's Marjory Barbier Ourso Athletic Center.

• Until 2005, the event included a “motorcade parade” of the senior classes through the streets of Uptown and down St. Charles Avenue. Safety concerns prompted a change in 2005, and the Senior privilege is now to decorate the entire campus with its class themes, colors and symbols.

• The Leprechauns held the first motorcade in 1949-50, but it was not on Rally Night in October.

Because of the their Irish theme, the motorcade was scheduled for March 17, 1950 (St. Patrick’s Day). The first motorcade conducted on the actual Rally Night date was held by the seniors of 1951-52.

On a special night every October, Ursuline volleyball players bench their navy uniforms and take center court in bright pink. Oversized banners with bold, pink script hang on the walls in the Marjory Barbier Ourso Athletic Center. The crowds, usually a sea of navy, instead show their support in various shades of – you guessed it – pink. It’s all for the annual Pink Game, just one of the many ways Ursuline students give back to the community.

Sweet treats, delicious dinners, and special Pink Game t-shirts are for sale, with the proceeds benefiting East Jefferson General Hospital Cancer Center. The Ursuline Athletic Department and breast cancer survivors speak to the crowds, working to raise awareness for a disease that 1 in 8 women will contend with at some point in their lives.

The Pink Game, although originally started by other New Orleans area schools, took on a special meaning at Ursuline after Marta Bott, volleyball coach, teacher and administrator, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The first Ursuline Pink Game was in 2008, shortly before Coach Bott lost her battle with cancer. Since then, Ursuline students have raised over $50,000 in the fight against breast cancer.

“The importance in the community is immeasurable,” explained Melissa Grubbs, who played on Bott’s team as a student and would later become her assistant coach and dear friend. “It has raised awareness for a disease that will unfortunately touch the lives of most of these girls ... in one way or another. In addition to education and awareness, the fundraising provides monetary support for research and education.”

Coach Bott’s motto was “Fight to the end!” She taught all of her athletes to shout it and believe it.

“Those are words that many [former] players still live by today,” Grubbs said. “Marta showed us the true meaning behind her words during her battle with cancer.”

Ursuline volleyball players write Coach Bott’s initials on their arms before games, a tribute to a beloved coach many have never even met.

Her legacy continues to live on, inspiring these young women, like those before them, to never give up and always “fight to the end!”

On Campus: THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Ursuline's Fine Arts Program introduces students to music theory, composition, vocal technique, music history, and teaches the fundamentals of wind, strings, and percussion instruments.

Fine Arts have always been a vital component of the curriculum at Ursuline Academy, reinforcing the development of the whole person. The elementary school music program is thriving, with an emphasis on creativity, composition and improvisation highlighted by a strong instruction in theory and performance.

Music education in general readies the young student for learning, facilitates student academic achievement and develops the creative capacities for lifelong success.

By helping to develop basic mental skills and capacities, music instruction impacts higher level thinking skills in 14

many ways, including math achievement, reading and language arts skills, and improving the recall and retention of verbal information. Music education prepares the brain for achievement, fosters superior working memory, and cultivates better thinking skills. (Arts Education Partnership, September 2011).

The music education program at Ursuline begins in the Soeur Teresita Rivet, OSU Early Childhood Learning Center with activities inspired by the Music Together program and incorporates song, dance, movement and improvisation, creativity and composition. The benefits at

this early age include the development of fine and gross motor skills, the building of self-esteem, and social and cognitive development. After-school programs are also offered in both music and dance to students in the early childhood division.

General music education classes are taught at the Academy to students from kindergarten through seventh grades. These classes taught by Mr. Ben Viguerie (a Grammy-nominated performer with the group Grupa Fantasma) include music theory, composition, vocal technique, music history, percussion instruments, Orff and hand bell instruction.

Beginning in third grade, each student learns to play both the violin and the recorder, and by that time is able to read music.

Violin instruction continues for each fourth grader. At the conclusion of fourth grade, middle school students have the option of continuing in the Orchestra or Advanced Orchestra, led by Ursuline teacher Dr. Kent Jensen, a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. The Ursuline Academy Orchestra has consistently earned superior ratings at various music festivals. Recorder instruction also continues through

middle school, with more advanced players joining the Recorder Consort, a performing group that has also consistently earned superior ratings at music festivals.

(In May of 2014, both the Advanced Orchestra and the Recorder Consort traveled to New York City to participate in the Big Apple Music Festival.) Talented singers have the option of joining the Elementary School Chorus which meets as an extracurricular activity. General music instruction culminates in seventh grade with students learning about hand bells and a multi-ethnic unit in hand drumming and dancing.

In addition, students are given the option for private piano instruction through the auspices of the Academy, beginning in the first grade. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, orchestra is now offered as an extracurricular activity for students in high school. High school students also have the option of vocal music instruction, participation in the Women’s Chorus, and private or group piano instruction.

BY KAREN THOMAS MCNAY When I went to school, I carried a notebook with paper, pencils, pens and textbooks back and forth to class.

I looked up information in an encyclopedia and checked the date to see when the information was published.

That was then and this is now. Did you know that the amount of digital information will increase 44 times between now and 2020? Did you know that many of the jobs our elementary students will have in 15 years do not exist today? The tools I used during my K-12 years would 16

never be enough to meet the challenges of today.

When you walk through Ursuline’s classrooms today, you will see new tools for our students, tools that bring the most current information to them with a touch of their fingertips. Every high school student now has a MacBook and every middle school student has an iPad. Lower school students share centers equipped with iPad minis.

Our vision for our students is to live their faith in a global society now and in the future. Technology helps

us connect globally and it opens the door to greater understanding. Online textbooks coupled with current information enable our students to hear from experts, go straight to the source, and receive instant feedback.

Teachers can also receive immediate assessment results.

American writer and futurist Alvin Toffler said, "Agility at learning skills is what differentiates a 21st century citizen and learner from a 20th century citizen and learner. The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those

who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."

Technology opens the door to more individualized instruction and more individual pacing in the classroom.

Students who need enhanced curriculum have the opportunity to delve deeper into subjects. Our goal is to cultivate and encourage lifelong learners.

We are blessed to be able to teach using technology in the context of our faith. Technology is a tool and all tools must be used appropriately. Internet safety and living our core values are important and part of our instruction.

We are working hard to give our students the skills necessary to perform jobs that don’t currently exist today as well as process and manage all the information that will come their way in a lifetime.

Discovery: THE EARLY CHILDHOOD GARDEN The herb garden at Ursuline is part of an outdoor science classroom used by students in the Soeur Teresita Rivet, OSU Early Childhood Learning Center.

The garden allows the Academy's youngest students to experience hands-on learning activities in science, health and nutrition.

Ursuline was recently awarded a grant from the Whole Kids Foundation, in partnership with FoodCorps, to enhance the cross-curricular experiences enriched by the garden. Maintained by Early Childhood Teacher Carol Allison, the outdoor classroom allows students to explore life cycles using a worm farm and butterflies; recycle by producing compost to naturally fertilize the soil; tend a garden to produce fruits, vegetables and herbs; learn how plants are grown in a garden, not just purchased in a store; and learn the nutritional value of fresh foods and incorporate them into meals they prepare together. It also enhances the long history and tradition of an herb garden as part of the Ursuline community.

Mrs. Allison is particularly looking forward to the addition of a compost ball to her garden supplies.

Her students will experience the production of fertilizer to be used in the garden.

The addition of pocket microscopes will allow students to carefully examine the plant life in the garden, as well as the abundant variety of insects.

Tradition: THE BLESSING OF THE HERBS Prior to their arrival in New Orleans, the Ursuline Sisters were hired by the Company of the Indies to staff a military hospital. The Sisters agreed to fulfill that responsibility if they were also allowed to open a school for young women of all ethnic, social and economic backgrounds. Their request was granted.

The hospital was in a dilapidated and unsanitary condition. So deplorable was it that only in cases of near-death illnesses would patients submit to treatment.

The Sisters were promised a new facility, but when they arrived, the hospital construction had not yet begun, so they went about their business of education until almost eight years later when a new Royal Military Hospital opened its doors.

The Sisters staffed the hospital with Sister St. Francis Xavier Hebert as the Chief Administrator. During the years before its opening, Sister St. Francis Xavier planted an herb garden alongside their vegetable garden inside the walls of the convent in the French Quarter. The availability of medication was very limited in the New World, so she experimented with combinations of her herbs and spices and created potions, remedies and medicines that were used by the hospital and the community until the Civil

War. Though crude by present standards, the availability of these medications played a critical role in 18th century health care, as they were the only recognized treatments for an assortment of ailments.

Because of her diligence and dedication to the supply, management and delivery of drugs, and her efficient and humane improvements in healthcare management during this era, she was recognized and praised by the French government and honored in 2003 in Chicago by the World Health Organization and the National Association of Catholic Charities for her pioneer work in pharmacy, healthcare and social work. History would record that Sister St. Francis Xavier Hebert was the first woman pharmacist in the United States.

At Ursuline, we bless the Early Childhood Garden annually. By doing so, we honor Sister St. Francis Xavier and her contributions to the city of New Orleans, and all the deceased Ursuline Sisters. The blessing is held in relation to the Feast of the Assumption. In many European countries, this is the traditional day for the blessings of herb gardens. This feast taking place in the long days of summer points to the harvest, and is inextricably linked to Mary, the bearer of God’s son, and the fruits of creation.

and, when in her home in New Orleans, always sat in the same pew in front of the Blessed Virgin’s altar at St. Louis Cathedral.

It was no different with her devotion to Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Mrs. Boggs’ interest in history and in New Orleans was especially shown to the nuns of Ursuline. She made certain that the letter they had received from President Thomas Jefferson in 1804 would be forever recognized and preserved. She announced it from the floor of the U. S. Congress where she was a 17-year Congresswoman and it has become part of the records of Congress.

She was the graduation keynote speaker for the class of 1975 and spoke on the role of women in the world and particularly the graduates, telling them she hoped they would always call on Our Lady of Prompt Succor to help and guide them.

Mrs. Boggs was present at Ursuline on many occasions, never wanting to be seated in a prominent place or recognized. She and Sr. Elizabeth Marie Landry, OSU were friends and she attended several of Ursuline’s piano recitals at Sister’s request. In 1982, Sr. Elizabeth Marie, then Director of the Ursuline Alumnae, named Mrs. Boggs an Honorary Member of Ursuline Academy.

At a fundraiser for Ursuline Academy held at her Bourbon Street home in the 1990's, she generously gave her time and money because as she said, “There can be no greater education than one that is directed by holy nuns, and, in this instance, the Ursuline Nuns of New Orleans, who were the first educators of New Orleans and who brought civility and religion and charity to an otherwise barbaric situation at the time.”

As the Ambassador to the Holy See, she entertained several Ursuline nuns at her villa in Rome and made certain that they had all the privileges allowed.

In 2003, when she was 87 years old, she presented a bouquet of red, white and blue flowers to the altar at the Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor on the Feast of the Assumption at the Blessing of the Herbs ceremony, showing her American patriotism and her devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Hurricane Katrina took its toll on the city of New Orleans, Ursuline Academy and Mrs. Boggs, as well. Yet, she never stopped trying to help make certain that if there was any government assistance to be gotten that Ursuline should get its share.

In 2007 at the age of 91, Mrs. Boggs moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland, but never forgot Ursuline and its Sisters.

She helped in every way that she could until her death at the age of 97 in the summer of 2013. Her funeral was held at St. Louis Cathedral where her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren occupied the seats in front of the altar of the Blessed Mother. She is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Roads in a tomb with her parents and baby son.

The late former congresswoman and U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican was the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress from Louisiana and the first woman to chair a Democratic Convention. She was also an honorary alumna of Ursuline Academy of New Orleans.

Ever since she could remember, Corinne “Lindy” Claiborne Boggs had a great devotion to Our Lady. Growing up in New Roads, Louisiana and attending St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, she prayed the Rosary daily 20

INSIDE THE MUSEUM THOMAS JEFFERSON LETTER 1804 Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans were apprehensive. Up until this point, they had served with many hardships under French and Spanish rule. This new American rule came with many uncertainties. The Sisters were aware that Americans were primarily Protestant. This knowledge brought back images of Catholic oppression and persecution in Europe during the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, and Napoleonic Wars of the 17th and 18th centuries.

So, they boldly contacted President Thomas Jefferson to get a statement regarding their future under this new government. Sister Marie Theresa Farjon de St. Xavier, Superior of the Ursuline Sisters, wrote the letter.

She requested that Jefferson put his response in writing.

Upon examination, Jefferson discovered that the Ursulines had a well-respected reputation, not only for educating women, but in social works as well. He sent back an extraordinary letter, recognized as one of the first statements on freedom of religion for the United States government.

Not only did he guarantee their right to continued ownership of their properties, but he also ensured their right to practice the Catholic religion, their right to continue their teaching ministry as designed, and their right to continue to earn and keep their income from such. In addition, he promised to provide them with protection should any foreign nation decide to attack, capture and plunder the city.

The letter remains on display in the museum on campus.

June Marie spent much of her young life in Honduras when her father was an executive of the United Fruit Company. She attended Ursuline Academy of New Orleans as a boarder in first through fifth grade and, later, St. Peter’s Parochial School in Reserve. She graduated from Ursuline Academy High School in 1942, entered the Ursuline Order that same year and received the name of “Joan Marie of the Infant Jesus” in 1943. In 1945, Sister Joan Marie professed her vows. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York and a Master of Education degree from Loyola University of New Orleans.

During her career as an Ursuline Sister, Joan Marie excelled in her teaching and administrative assignments.

She served in New Orleans; Dallas, Texas; Galveston, Texas; Jennings, Missouri; Caracas, Venezuela; and Iguala, Mexico. In 1989, Sister Joan Marie retired from teaching and undertook the role of the New Orleans Ursuline Community Archivist. Throughout the past twenty years, she has been recognized for her work with archivists, curators, collectors, authors and historians in a number of museum exhibits and scholarly historical publications.

Sister Angela graduated from Ursuline Academy in Galveston, Texas in 1933. She entered the Ursuline novitiate in Alton, Illinois in July of 1934, and she professed her final vows in January of 1937. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Xavier College of Chicago and her Masters Degree in Library Science from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois. Her years of work in the Catholic Schools took her to Jennings and Arcadia, Missouri; Galveston, Texas; Springfield and Oak Park, Illinois; and she was one of the original faculty members of Saint Angela Merici School in Metairie, Louisiana. Her last ministry assignment was at the National Votive Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in New Orleans serving as the beloved Sacristan until her retirement. She moved to the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois in 2003, where she remained until she entered eternal life on November 25, 2013. Sister Angela bequeathed her remains to St. Louis University Medical School.

Gertrude Becker, OSU DECEMBER 31, 1910 – NOVEMBER 13, 2013 Sister Gertrude Becker, OSU graduated from Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood, Missouri. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fontbonne College of St. Louis and a Masters of Business Administration from DePaul University of Chicago. She entered the Ursuline novitiate in Alton, Illinois in July of 1933, and she professed her final vows in January of 1936. Her unending quest for knowledge and her colorful life of service led her to posts in Alton, Illinois; Springfield, Illinois; Kirkwood, Missouri; Texarkana, Texas; Boulder, Colorado; Thibodaux, Louisiana; and New Orleans. She gave herself to teaching at the elementary, secondary, and college levels; to serving as Provincial Secretary and Treasurer, playing a major part in introducing computerized accounting in the province; and to parish work in adult education. She also performed volunteer work for the Louisiana State Museum and the New Orleans Symphony. Sister Gertrude was a resident of the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois until she accepted her everlasting reward on November 13, 2013.

Lourdes Suarez, OSU SEPTEMBER 19, 1937 – APRIL 14, 2013 She was born Maria de Lourdes Suarez, the first of 14 children of Manuel Suarez Carreno and Eloisa Gaston de Suarez, on September 19, 1937 in Havana, Cuba. When Lourdes wanted to pursue religious life, her mother helped her research various possibilities from which Lourdes chose the Ursulines as the match for her call and aspirations. She entered the Ursuline novitiate there in 1955 and made her first religious vows in 1956.

She came to the College of New Rochelle in New York with the Cuban novitiate community in 1960 when the future of religious orders was being threatened by the Castro regime. There she earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. She earned a second bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and a doctorate in education from the Catholic University of Peru. Her teaching career led her to Mexico City, Mexico; Lima, Peru; and New Orleans. She moved to the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in 2003.

Sr. Lourdes also was an accomplished pianist with an exquisite voice. For two summers, she and some of her siblings were flown by their parents to the Von Trapp Family Music Camp in Vermont. Sr. Lourdes not only sang with the Von Trapp family but came to know them personally. Toward the end of her life, one of the things she enjoyed most was watching “Sound of Music.”

2013 Distinguished Alumna

Mary Lee Berner Harris 1966 Mary Lee Berner Harris 1966 was chosen as the 2013 Ursuline Distinguished Alumna. This award is annually bestowed upon a graduate of Ursuline Academy or Ursuline College of New Orleans who demonstrates the core values and ideals of an Ursuline education in all aspects of her life. Since 1986, 45 women have received this honor, making it one of Ursuline’s most prestigious awards.

A life-long Ursuline girl, Mary Lee’s Ursuline experience began as a five-year-old and continues today six decades later as an asset and a faithful helper to the school and to the Ursuline Sisters. Following graduation as a Sioux of 1966, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from St. Mary’s Dominican College in 1970. That same year, she married Spencer Berry Harris, Jr. Spencer and Mary Lee have been blessed with six children, Spencer III, Christian, Rachel, Rebecca, Mary Lee and Katharine; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; sons-in-law, Paul Treuting and Joshua Sagers; and nine grandchildren.

Throughout the years, she has served on volunteer committees and leadership teams for the benefit of Ursuline.

She currently serves as the Curator for the Ursuline Convent Collection and Archives; conducts tours of the Ursuline Convent Museum and of the National Votive Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor; coordinates weddings, funerals and baptisms for the Shrine; and helps the Sisters with some of the daily operations. She is often seen on campus, always willing to offer a hand when the Academy or the Sisters are in need. Sister Joan Marie Aycock, OSU said, “Mary Lee is the true blue Ursuline girl. I remember Mary Lee as the sweet little girl she was, as the wonderful mother she became, and the tireless worker for Ursuline.”

Mary Lee worked as the Academy’s Director of Development from 1999 until her retirement in 2011. Her daughter Rachel stated, “The day after my mother retired, I gave her a call to see how she was handling her newfound free time. After raising six kids, she was not used to having time on her hands. But when she picked up the phone, she informed me that she was helping out the Sisters that day 24

and couldn’t talk.”

From that day forward, she has continued to help the Sisters in many ways. In fact, an hour after she learned that she was chosen as the 2013 Distinguished Alumna, Mary Lee was at school moving furniture around in preparation for the opening of the new Shrine gift shop.

During her tenure as Director of Development, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans causing extensive damage to Ursuline’s 11.5 acre campus. Rachel, again observed, “After Hurricane Katrina, my mother’s priorities were her children, her husband, and the Ursuline nuns. She worked tirelessly to catalogue their whereabouts and the state of their health.

She returned to New Orleans at the first opportunity, not to check on her home, but to check on the school and assess the damage. She spent countless hours searching for new avenues of financial support to help boost rebuilding efforts to re-open Ursuline and prepare it for students again.”

Mary Lee’s home was flooded, but she did not let that set her back. She set up an office in Baton Rouge to continue her development work and began grant writing and fundraising to restore the ravaged campus. Her efforts were appreciated by the Sisters, alumnae and Ursuline families. When asked about Mary Lee, Sister Teresita Rivet, OSU commented, “She works untiringly for the good of Ursuline.”

Mary Lee has embraced both the teachings of St. Angela and the Ursuline Core Values, and she has instilled this in her own family by example. “As I think of my mother, I always imagine her in the midst of one of her characteristic settings: poised in front of the delicious meal she is preparing; sitting at our family table, laughing until her face turns red; or working behind her desk at Ursuline Academy,” reflected her daughter Katharine. “Mom always thought it a privilege to have attended a school with the motto Serviam, ‘I will serve,’ and she never lets us forget that we are Ursuline girls, a standing that is both a gift and a responsibility that requires consistent courtesy, loyalty and courage.”

Courtesy, loyalty and courage is just what Mary Lee Harris has shown throughout her years at Ursuline and through her many acts of service. Sister Carolyn Marie Brockland, OSU feels that Mary Lee “exemplifies the qualities of graciousness, competence and generosity to an outstanding degree.”

Mary Lee’s passion for Ursuline is inherent in her daily life. Her love of Ursuline is apparent in her desire to impart to others that heritage and legacy which she considers so precious. She has shared this love and inspired many to give back to the Academy. According to her daughter, Rebecca, “She couldn’t stop working there, even if she tried. Ursuline is part of her spirit, and that love is what makes her work so hard for it.”

Skip of 2001 honored with Medal of Peace

BY DOLLY DUPLANTIER '82 Régine René Labrousse '01 is a very busy woman, but then again most Ursuline women are — not just with work and family, but also with their desire to help others.

It comes naturally. Nurtured through Serviam, Ursuline graduates are well known for their lifelong dedication to serving neighbors in need.

Régine is no exception. Just this past January, she received the Medal of Peace from the YMCA d’Haiti. The award honors those who, without any special resources, demonstrate an ardent desire to promote peace, social justice and development in their community. The organization proudly considers her an exceptional role model for Haitian youth.

She was taken by surprise with the award. “I'm usually the one looking for extraordinary community leaders and finding awards and professional opportunities for them. This award is a reminder that people do notice and appreciate my efforts. I better keep working harder!”

Régine knows how important it is for the Haitian youth to see young people work diligently and be recognized for their efforts. She came to the country at a time when Haitians desperately needed assistance and inspiration — just days after the 2010 catastrophic earthquake ravaged their homeland and affected approximately three million people.

From 2010 to 2013, Régine was the Cultural Affairs Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. She implemented educational, cultural and professional exchange programs to promote mutual understanding between Haitians and Americans.

Régine was working in American Citizen Services

at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica, when the earthquake hit. Five days later, she was sent to the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. For two weeks, she worked 18-hour shifts and slept on the floor in the consular section.

“We worked 10 hours reviewing visa applicants at the consular section, and then eight hours at the airport boarding cleared American citizens onto planes,” she said.

“I also met with press to keep them up-to-date on the U.S. government’s efforts during that time.”

Her work there was life changing. Régine decided to stay when she realized she could make a positive impact and influence policy most effectively in Haiti.

“It revitalized a sense of purpose within me," she said.

The dedicated Skip knew early on what she wanted to do with her life. She said her multicultural background (both her parents are Haitian) and her desire to learn about different cultures inspired her career path. Service was also a key factor.

Régine earned a master's degree in International Communication from American University in D.C., as well as a bachelor's degree in International Business and Latin American Studies from Loyola University in New Orleans. She studied abroad in Canada, France, Brazil, Mexico and Haiti.

In 2006, she joined the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. Régine served in Washington, D.C., as well as U.S. Embassies in Morocco, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and lastly in Haiti.

This year, Régine took a new job within the private sector as Public Affairs Manager for La Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti S.A. (BRANA). The 40-year-old brewery produces over a dozen beverages and is owned by the Heineken Group. Her responsibilities include government and media relations, most notably with the Haitian President and Prime Minister.

"The private sector is more efficient," she explained.

"BRANA is the Haitian company with the most positive socio-economic impact. More than 60,000 families rely on BRANA operations for employment. I'm proud to work for a company that is socially responsible. It's a new concept for emerging markets and BRANA is the leader here."

Régine remains involved in her community. She was recently elected to the board of Haiti’s Manufacturer’s Association, and was also named Vice-President of the American Chamber of Commerce. In these roles, she will strive to influence important legislation regarding minimum wage, contraband, and securing the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

She believes her years at Ursuline helped shape the woman she is today. “The Ursuline community, as a whole, taught me the importance of being active within the larger community. My success isn't really success if those around me aren't successful as well.”

Sr. Carla Dolce, OSU was selected as one of New Orleans Magazine’s 2013 Top Female Achievers. Sr. Carla was recognized not only for her service as an Ursuline Sister, but also her work as Prioress of the Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans and her efforts in fundraising for the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor.

Dot Hamlin serves 4,000 families as Pastoral Administrator at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. Dot has seven children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Honorable Nancy Amato Konrad retired from the bench after more than three decades as Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court Judge.

Karen Crais Briuglio is happy to report that her granddaughter’s high school volleyball team won the Texas State championship. The team ranked number one in the nation! Their record was 45 wins to 0. Her granddaughter, Maddie, is a senior and will go to ULL in Lafayette where she will play volleyball.

Cheryl Johnston Bragg is the branch owner and manager for Raymond James Financial Service. Cheryl’s branch is the only woman-owned office of the company’s five locations in the New Orleans area. Only 10 percent of the

branches nationwide are women-owned. Cheryl and her team manage more than $80 million in assets for roughly 250 clients.

Ann Valentino Fuselier was honored as one of St. Elizabeth’s Guild’s 2013 New Orleans’ Best Volunteer Activists. Ann is a member of the Ursuline Academy Board of Trustees, an Emeritus Board member of the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses and a member of the Junior League. She is also on the advisory board of the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center at the Old Ursuline Convent and a member of The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus.

Dr. Dolliann Hurtig is currently an associate professor at the Louisiana Tech School of Literature and Language.

On a national level, Dolliann has been involved with the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). She is Editor-in-Chief of a book about Francophone film in the French language. The American Association of Teachers of French has appointed Dolliann as Editor-in-Chief of Volume II. She was named Chair of Hospitality for the Association’s National Convention that was held in New Orleans.

Dody Dolese Nolan retired after 36 years of teaching at Ursuline. She calculated 30,400 classes, over 40,000 speeches, over 300 productions, and over 700 musical numbers during her time at the Academy. Dody’s future plans include volunteering at the National World War II Museum and being an ambassador at the Louis Armstrong International Airport, welcoming conventions and groups to the city.

Julie Capella Vanderbrook was honored as one of St. Elizabeth’s Guild’s 2013 New Orleans’ Best Volunteer Activists. Julie has spent much of her time volunteering and fundraising at Catholic schools attended by her six children. She is very involved in St. Michael’s Special School as well as Immaculate Conception Jesuit Parish.

Dr. Elma Ireland LeDoux received Tulane University Health Sciences’ 2014 Teaching Scholar Award. Dr. LeDoux is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director of the Standardized Patient Program and Course Director of Clinical Diagnosis.

Sally Main is the senior curator of Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University. Newcomb Art Gallery partnered with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service to present the largest, most comprehensive collection of Newcomb arts and crafts to tour the country in nearly three decades.

Katherine Landry was elected President of the East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary for 2014-2015.

Dr. Jan Daniel Lancaster was chosen as one of “Education: Ones to Watch” by New Orleans CityBusiness.

Dr. Lancaster is the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She leads 80 schools in eight parishes. She was also selected to the Board of Regents for Our Lady of Holy Cross College.

Monique Martinez Butler was chosen as Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans’ 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year.

Dedra Newman Castle is a founding member and managing partner of Castle Partners, LLC, a human resources management services firm, and Level Mediation, LLC, a multi-state mediation firm. Dedra recently joined Rite Aid Corporation as Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Elizabeth “Liz” Broekman is the ORE Manager for First Bank and Trust. She is also the wedding coordinator for Holy Name of Jesus Church. Liz and her husband, Jason, have started their own business, GoGo Booth, which is a portable photo booth to rent. The couple has been in photography for 25 years. Liz and Jason have two sons, Matthew and Chandler.

Simone Bruni, founder and owner of Demo Diva, was named to the board of directors for The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Christi Keating Sumich Ph.D. recently wrote “Divine Doctors and Dreadful Distempers: How Practicing Medicine Became a Respectable Profession.”

Ashley Hansen Springgate received a James Beard Award during a ceremony in New York. Her family business, Hansen’s Sno-Bliz, was chosen as one of the five recipients for the 2014 America’s Classics Award.

Laurie Lichtenstein Bonura and family lived in Sydney, Australia for one year for her husband's job. Laurie described it as both a crazy and whirlwind of challenges and the adventure of a lifetime. She also feels that living overseas gave her three sons the chance to grow in adaptability, tolerance, strength and courage.

Melissa Guillory Bourdonnay received her Masters of Health Science on May 23, 2014 from The University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, Mississippi.

Melissa will continue her career in the Medical Device and Bio Pharmaceutical Industry as a Senior Critical Care Business Manager for her current employer. Pictured with daughter Presley Bourdonnay.

Michelle Jackson Higgins currently serves as the Director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program for St. Charles Parish. This program is currently one of nine in the state. The R.S.V.P. Program is a program where seniors 55 and older can sign up to volunteer at various sites. The program serves St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, and St. James parishes. Within the tri-parish area, there are over 700 volunteers serving 60 volunteer sites. These sites include, but are not limited to, nursing homes, schools, senior centers, hospitals and civic groups. Tens of thousands of volunteer hours are clocked every year.

Erika McConduit-Diggs has been named president and chief executive officer of the Urban League of New Orleans.

After serving as president and CEO for almost a year on an interim basis, she was elected unanimously by the board of directors after a national search. She is the second woman to serve in this position in the group’s 75-year history.

Claudine Gelvin Baggett completed her MBA in Management and Strategy from Western Governor’s University in Salt Lake City, Utah. She will use her degree at her current position as a Human Resources Generalist at SIGNATURE, a multi-family office in Norfolk, Virginia.

Amy Bissell-Baker is the bar and events manager at Gravier Street Social, a private members club in the Central Business District of New Orleans.

Heather Bivens was featured on the cover of The Atlanta Tribune for “Who Runs the World? Entrepreneurs, the Up-And-Comers.” Heather is the founder of Hylton Casting, a boutique casting company based in the entertainment industry.

Jauné Jackson is a morning news producer for WDSU in New Orleans. She received a Suncoast Emmy nomination for Best Morning Newscast. She was the only morning nomination in the state of Louisiana.

Samira Jones Marigny graduated from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2013. She passed the bar in February 2014 and is an attorney at a Kenner law firm handling mostly family law and successions.

Kelly Covington was recently honored for her service and dedication to the Denver Association of Petroleum Landmen. She was awarded the 2013 DAPL's Presidents Award in recognition of her hard work as chairman of the Social Networking Committee and current secretary of the executive board. Kelly has also been nominated for the position of vice president on the 2014-15 executive board.

Katharine Harris graduated from Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory in May 2014. Katharine has been a member of the National Broadway Chorus, Washington D.C. since January 2014. National Broadway Chorus was created to provide performance opportunities for established and aspiring Broadway performers. Led by Conductor Luke Frazier, 24 singers perform Broadway and Crossover repertoire. National Broadway Chorus seeks to promote and perform the Great American Songbook, as well as traditional choral repertoire, highlighting new performers, new works and new concepts. The chorus also seeks to expose a new generation of students through education and collaboration to music of the Great American Songbook and beyond. A dynamic and multitalented ensemble, the National Broadway Chorus has spent the 2013-2014 season creating unforgettable performances in Washington, D.C. In June 2014 they performed a concert staging of Stephan Schwartz’s “Children of Eden” at The Kennedy Center to rave reviews. Maryland Theatre Guide said, “The National Broadway Chorus provided the big vocal moments of the evening… [the] dramatic impact of anything in the show [was] due in part to the great sounding choir.” The National Broadway Chorus also performed in 2014 on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, at the opening of The National Portrait Gallery’s new exhibit “American Cool,” and an original cabaret, “Love for Sale,” at The Kennedy Center.

Anna Landry earned an “A” for her six-hour class in Marine Science at University of Georgia and her twoweek sojourn through Argentina and Antarctica. She slept overnight on ice and took the polar plunge into the freezing waters! She feels that it was a trip of a lifetime. She even began a blog about her journey.

Hanan Rimawi was awarded a scholarship from Iggie’s House, Inc. – A Nia Reneé Robertson Foundation. The Foundation was blown away with Hanan’s dedication to the residents of Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in Algiers where she has been volunteering since 7th grade.

She received the scholarship at a reception held just for her on site at Our Lady of Wisdom. Iggie’s House is a non-profit organization created in memory of alumna Nia Reneé Robertson ’97.

SIOUX CLASS OF 2014 Ursuline Academy, founded 1727, conducted its 287th commencement exercise May 17 in the school’s auditorium.

Janet Crumhorn Pesce, an Ursuline graduate of 1966 and a teacher, speaker and advocate for the blind, delivered the commencement address to the young women graduates.

The ceremony began with an invocation by Sr. Mary Anne Holmes, OSU, Prioress of the Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans. Ursuline Academy’s Director of Counseling Karen Rountree Palmer served as Mistress of Ceremonies, while High School Principal Alice Bairnsfather and Academy President Karen Thomas McNay presented awards and diplomas to the graduating seniors.

The valedictory address was delivered by Hanan I. Rimawi, the student who earned the highest cumulative average during her high school career.

Hanan I. Rimawi, a resident of Harvey, is the daughter of Issam and Amal Rimawi. She plans to attend Tulane University where she will double major in public health and international relations. She received the Distinguished Scholar Award from Tulane University, the President's Scholarship from Georgia Tech, the Dean's Scholar Merit Award from Loyola University New Orleans, the Xavier 40

University Scholarship and Board of Trustees Scholarship from Xavier University of Louisiana, and the The Nia Reneé Robertson Scholarship from Iggie’s House, Inc. – The Nia Reneé Robertson Foundation.

Earning the second highest cumulative averages were salutatorians Gabriella M. Bergeron and Iman Naeem.

Gabriella M. Bergeron, a resident of Gretna, is the daughter of Joseph and Emily Bergeron. She plans to attend Louisiana State University where she will study chemical engineering.

She received the LSU Academic Scholars Resident Award from Louisiana State University; the Academic Heritage Scholarship from Auburn University; the Distinguished Scholar Award from Tulane University; and the Presidential Scholarship, Out of State Scholarship, and Laptop Scholarship from the University of South Alabama.

Iman Naeem, a resident of Kenner, is the daughter of Mohammad and Laiq Naeem. She plans to attend Tulane University where she will study biology. She received the Distinguished Scholar Award from Tulane University, the Presidential Scholarship from Loyola University Chicago, the Dean’s Scholar Merit Award from Loyola University New Orleans, the Dean’s Scholarship from NOVA Southeastern

University, and the Academic Scholarship from the University of Detroit Mercy.

The two highest honors awarded by Ursuline Academy were bestowed on Hanan Rimawi and Lauren Barré. Hanan Rimawi received the Courtesy, Loyalty, Courage (CLC) Medal, awarded by the high school faculty to the student who exemplifies those three virtues. Lauren Barré received the Sedes Sapientiae Medal, awarded by the high school faculty to the senior whose scholarship, achievement and loyalty have been outstanding and consistent.

The 79 graduates earned a total of $8,071,657 in scholarships.

What does it mean to you to be in the 287th graduating class of Ursuline Academy of New Orleans?

Being a part of the 287th graduating class of Ursuline Academy is truly special. The Ursuline Sisters recognized the importance of educating the young women of New Orleans in 1727, and it is incredible knowing that I have been a part of that heritage. One of the things so special about Ursuline is the proud alumnae who are found everywhere. Whenever I am out in the community, I seem to always encounter an Ursuline alumna. The first question they always ask me, “Are you a Sioux, Mac, or Skip?” It reminds me that we are a strong community at Ursuline. I also love to hear about their great memories, the friendships they made and still have, and how those years were the greatest years of their lives. But most importantly, they all speak of how Ursuline, after all these years have passed since 44

Emily MacLaren '14 was selected as the 2014 Cor Unum Award Recipient by the Ursuline Alumnae Association. The award is given to one senior each year. Candidates are judged solely on their love for Ursuline Academy and their honest expression of what the Academy means to them. they graduated, still feels like home. It is comforting to know that I will soon join these alumnae and will share the memories I have made with the future young girls who will become a part of such a special place. And just like the alumnae who I often encounter, I know I will always have a home at Ursuline.

Being in the 287th class to graduate from Ursuline Academy illustrates how St. Angela’s goal to educate young women and inspire them to live a life committed to Serviam continues to live on today. I love that I am a part of something that has been here for 287 years, and it will be here long after I graduate.

In what ways do you feel your Ursuline education has prepared you for the world in which we live?

Ursuline’s mission is fostered by the desire to educate young women. My Ursuline education has definitely prepared me

in many ways for the world in which we live. Along with the outstanding education I have received within the classroom, Ursuline has offered a way of teaching that goes beyond the classroom. Through my Ursuline education I have been offered countless opportunities that I would not have been offered elsewhere. I have been able to participate in service trips within our community through our Service Learning Program. This program has afforded me the opportunity to serve children, individuals with special needs, the hungry, poor, and homeless.

These experiences have given me the opportunity to experience diversity of the community in which I live, thus providing me with a very unique educational experience.

I also had the opportunity to learn outside the classroom while on the Close Up Program in Washington, D.C. Ursuline is one of the few local schools that participates in the Close Up Program. This program provided me the opportunity to experience our government. We were able to take what we had learned in the classroom and see it in action. We also were able to interact with students from all over the U.S and Puerto Rico.

Finally, I was very fortunate to have been chosen to participate in the first Beyond Our Borders immersion program to Guyana, South America. For twelve days, I left behind the comfort of my home and luxuries of air conditioning, Internet, and much more. This opportunity gave me global educational experiences that I would not have had at any other school.

I have gained life skills and education on different levels that cannot be taught in a classroom setting. Through these experiences, I have learned how to give of myself to those in need. I have also learned how to interact and work with individuals from different economic backgrounds, religions, races, and cultures. These will be skills that will be very important for me to be successful in the world in which we live.

Name the most significant value you learned from Ursuline Academy.

The most significant value I learned from Ursuline Academy is the importance of Serviam: I will serve. St. Angela recognized the importance to educate young women and provide service to others. As an Ursuline student I was called to serve by volunteering a certain number of hours each school year. Every year I found myself completing more than the hours expected of me because I enjoyed the time I spent serving others.

Upon graduation I will have served close to 600 hours in my community and abroad.

Throughout my years of service, I have been involved in several organizations. I began volunteering with a local organization that involved something I loved to do: swimming.

I have volunteered several years with the organization JoJo’s

Hope, which provides free swim lessons to children who are mentally handicapped. Through this experience, I was able to learn about Camp Friendship. Camp Friendship is a weeklong camp that gives children who have Spina Bifida the chance to attend a free camp, a chance they do not normally get because most of them are in wheelchairs. In my junior year of high school, I became involved in Ursuline’s first ever Beyond Our Borders program, which gave me the opportunity to serve outside my comfort zone in a different country, Guyana, South America. My time in Guyana was a life changing experience.

In the words of St. Angela, “You have more need to serve others, than they have to be served.” Through my volunteering I have witnessed how these children have changed my life. It is truly special to know that you can impact someone’s life by simply offering service through conversations or manual labor.

I have realized through my service that I want to continue to serve others in my community and abroad. Serving others is the most significant value I will take away from my Ursuline education.

What one word describes Ursuline and why?

The one word I would use to describe Ursuline is tradition.

Since Ursuline has been continuously educating women since 1727, it is no surprise that it is filled with a rich history and unique traditions. Since my spend-the-day in fifth grade, I knew there was something special about Ursuline. I loved the many rich traditions of Ursuline and how every student knew these traditions. We are taught our class mascot at a very early age, and we are lifelong Sioux, Macs or Skips. We celebrate the feast of St. Ursula annually with our Rally Night. We learn the words to our Alma Mater in our first music class. Not only do we know all about St. Angela, every year we dedicate an entire day of service in our community in her honor.

And we graduate in long, stark white dresses and carry red roses. These are just a few of the traditions that make Ursuline a very unique school. I am very proud to have been an Ursuline student and to be a member of the 287th graduating class.

PLANNED GIVING OLPS Legacy Society Founded in 1727 by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Ursula, Ursuline Academy enjoys the distinction of being both the oldest continuously-operating school for girls and the oldest Catholic school in the United States. Convinced that the education of women was essential to the development of a civilized, spiritual and just society, the Ursuline Sisters influenced culture and learning in New Orleans by providing an exceptional education for its women.

An Ursuline education is rooted in a tradition of formation and innovation.

It provides a nurturing environment for the learning and development of the whole person, based on a sound foundation of values drawn from the vision and philosophy of Saint Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline Order in Brescia, Italy in 1535. Ursuline Academy is dedicated to the moral, spiritual, intellectual and social growth of each individual, and these values are validated by our education approach.

Today, Ursuline Academy boasts an enrollment of over 750 young women from Toddler 2 through 12th grade. Membership in the OLPS (Our Lady of Prompt Succor) Legacy Society is offered to all those who share a commitment to the Academy, endorsing its mission, and affirming that commitment by means of a planned gift.

To become eligible for Society membership, an individual simply informs the school in writing that Ursuline Academy of New Orleans has been included in his or her estate plan, by any one of a number of ways, including a bequest in your will, as beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan or by making use of a Charitable Remainder Trust or a Charitable Lead Trust.
