Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)

At Unitec you can build a study path to suit you and your interests. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and you’ll benefit from their professional experience and industry connections. From certificates through to postgraduate degrees, more than 90% of our programmes include Industry Based Learning, which gives you a competitive advantage when you start applying for jobs. Work experience and hands-on projects are a key part of all Unitec programmes.

Once you have completed your studies and if you’re eligible, you can apply for the PSWV.

Our graduates find jobs Work experience, industry placements and hands-on practice at our campus facilities are part of the curriculum. We make sure you graduate with the professional and vocational skills that employers need in New Zealand and overseas. After graduation your qualification will be recognised nationally and internationally. The practical experience you can bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.

Student visa work rights During your studies, if you are eligible to work 20 hours per week, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). Enrolled students can also work fulltime during Unitec holidays (including mid-semester, April and September breaks, and/or the summer holiday break). Inland Revenue Department (IRD) You must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. Visit www.ird.govt.nz for more information.

Part-time jobs There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland that you can apply for. Some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a few days. Employers in NZ must abide by the law when hiring staff, so make sure you know what your rights are – see http://dol.govt.nz/er/. The minimum legal wage, at the time of printing is NZ$15.25 per hour. You will be taxed on your earnings, but any job offer you get must at least be this amount. If you’re not sure, please check with the International Office.

Finding your own accommodation

Unitec has contracted Campus Living Villages (CLV) to provide accommodation options for students. Some accommodation will be oncampus and some will be in nearby suburbs. Please contact CLV directly on their email: unitec@clv.co.nz. For up to date information, please check our website www.unitec.ac.nz/ why-choose-unitec/accommodation.

If you are looking for your own accommodation, please make sure you arrive in Auckland at least two weeks before your semester starts. Some houses, flats or apartments will not be furnished so you may need to purchase household items when you first move in. There is a huge variety of accommodation available. To secure this, you need to view the property and meet with the landlord to formally sign the tenancy agreement, so please do arrive in Auckland early! Tenancy and landlord details can be found on http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-agreement. A useful website for finding accommodation is www.trademe.co.nz. When selecting suburbs that are close to the Mt Albert campus, you can search for Kingsland, Mt Roskill, Mt Albert, Sandringham, Avondale and New Lynn.

Unitec offers a wide range of programmes, from certificates to doctoral degrees. A doctorate is the highest level of study in New Zealand (level 10), while certificates usually start at level 3. If you’re studying for a bachelor’s degree you would normally take courses at levels 5 to 7. The levels here represent the level at which the study is completed – e.g. a bachelor’s degree is level 7, diplomas are either level 5 or level 6. These levels are also the same levels indicated throughout the National Qualifications Framework (NQF); see www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications/index.html. New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) – Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 »» This is an Intensive and practical academic English programme. Students who graduate from this programme can progress into Unitec’s academic programmes without taking an IELTS test

A joint cyber security venture between Unitec and Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is set to become an important new weapon against computer malware attack. The Red Alert system is designed to alert companies and organisations to a cyber hack as soon as it happens. It’s the result of several years’ work by NICT scientists and engineers, and by Unitec staff and students working on computational intelligence for cyber security. Who can write my SOP?

SOPs must be written by the student applying for the programme.

Can I copy the SOP or ask someone else to write it for me? No – it is very important that you write your own statement. Do not ask a friend, agent or family member to do it for you, and please do not copy paragraphs from Unitec’s or other websites. We want to know why you want to study with us, and only you can tell us this.

Why do I have to write an SOP? Mainly to help Unitec understand why you are applying for the programme you selected, and whether it is likely to meet your needs. The SOP does not affect whether you meet the general entry requirements.

What do I need to include in my SOP? » Your name (and your Unitec ID number if you have it) » The Unitec programme you want to study (we cannot proceed if your SOP is about another institution or a programme we do not offer) » Your motivation for applying – in other words: › what interests you about this programme or area of study? › what do you hope to get out of your study? » Some thoughts about your future plans – you could tell us about: › further study you might be planning to do after completing this programme › whether you want to work in NZ (or in another country) afterwards › what kind of work you think you might like to do

If you receive a conditional Offer of Place, submit evidence of meeting the requirements.

Unitec will acknowledge your application and provide a student ID number (include this number whenever you contact Unitec in the future). Unitec will request more information if necessary, and will assess the application when information is provided.

Unitec provides an Offer of Place (or a decline notification), as appropriate. Unconditional offers include information about insurance and how to pay.

When you receive an unconditional Offer of Place, pay the fees and apply for your student visa2 OR if required by Immigration NZ, apply for an Approval in Principle for your visa first, and pay the fees when AIP is granted.

Once payment is received, Unitec issues a fee receipt to you and/or your agent and INZ to assist with the visa application.

Complete and return the insurance3 form to Unitec.

Unitec will enrol you in suitable courses and email a timetable to you.

GUIDELINES FOR CREDIT RECOGNITION / CROSS-CREDITS As per the Unitec Academic Statute, “cross-credit” means the award of credit in recognition of successful equivalent study at the same or higher level, in the context of another programme and in accordance with the institution’s policy on credit recognition. Cross-credits awarded do not usually exceed 50% of the Unitec programme, and may be less. All cross-credits granted are provisional until approved by the Programme Committee. The student will be formally advised of the Programme Committee’s decision in writing. Cross-credits are only applicable to the programme for which they are approved; they cannot be reassigned to another programme. The information on this form and on any attachments will be covered by the NZ Privacy Act 1993 and by Unitec’s Privacy of Information policy.
