This March, Sunridge Nurseries proudly celebrated the grand opening of our cutting-edge callousing facility, a monumental investment in our future and a testament to our commitment to innovation and quality in grapevine production.
During a heartfelt ribbon-cutting ceremony, our VP of Operations, Adam Lovgren, was honored to cut the ribbon, surrounded by our dedicated employees and supporting vendors
The advanced capabilities of our new 30,000 square foot callous room, which allows for precise temperature and humidity control for over 6 million vines at a time, enhance the establishment of newly formed graft unions and root development, and we are already seeing significant improvements
As we progress, we are optimistic about the improved capabilities of the new facility and the positive impact it will have on our nursery's production processes Our goal is to instill confidence in our customers and reaffirm our commitment to providing superior products and services
Sunridge Nurseries is currently exploring the potential of advanced multispectral imaging technology to improve our routine field estimate checks This innovative approach is designed to provide more accurate assessments of our dormant take rates, ultimately enhancing our ability to deliver precise updates on order availability to our clients
Multispectral imaging is a sophisticated technique that captures images across specific wavelengths, ranging from visible colors to those beyond the visible spectrum, such as near-infrared This advanced imaging technology enables us to visualize aspects of plants that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye, including nutrient levels and chlorophyll content
The camera is mounted on a tractor that navigates down a row while capturing images The collected data is uploaded to a specialized program that processes the information, ultimately providing us with a viable vine count categorized by variety.
This season, we will integrate this technology with our traditional visual inspections to evaluate its effectiveness We are eager to compare the results and enhance our understanding of the capabilities and potential of this technology
Last year, we proudly announced the extension of our partnership agreement with ENTAV for an additional 20 years This celebration commemorated a remarkable 27-year collaboration with ENTAV, representing a significant milestone in the advancement of US viticulture Together, we have transformed the industry by introducing the finest French clonal grapevine selections directly from the prestigious ENTAV repository in France, each bearing the esteemed ENTAV-INRA® trademark a symbol of authenticity from the leading viticulture authority in France.
The journey began in 1994 when a forward-thinking French nurseryman reached out to our founder, Glen Stoller, proposing a partnership that would not only bring the richness of French clones to California but also unlock a world of opportunities for US wine grape growers This groundbreaking initiative has spurred innovation and diversity within our industry, positioning us as pioneers in the grapevine sector
What started as a casual conversation at the ONIVINS meeting in South Africa, the Director of ENTAV at the time suggested Sunridge as an ideal nursery in California to establish a partnership for the exclusive introduction of official material directly from the ENTAV conservatories. Following this recommendation, the Stoller’s were invited by the prestigious French government grapevine research and breeding laboratory to visit their facilities and forge an alliance After years of negotiations, Sunridge Nurseries and ENTAV successfully reached a partnership agreement On May 29, 1998, Glen and Craig Stoller returned to Paris to formalize this significant collaboration during a ceremonial signing event
Sunridge was granted the rights to import these new clones into California, subjecting them to rigorous pest and disease testing at official quarantine stations before propagating them for our customers. Subsequently, all clonal material would eventually be channeled through Foundation Plant Services at UC Davis
This collaboration has not only reshaped the landscape of US viticulture but has also set a new standard for excellence and innovation in the industry. We look forward to continuing our partnership with ENTAV and further advancing the art of winemaking in the years to come.
Each of the varieties carry two specific genes resistant to both powdery and downy mildew These innovative varietals not only enhance resilience against various challenges but also promise improved yields, positioning vineyard owners for success in an increasingly competitive market
Last year, our production team added four new varieties to our increase blocks as well as a new rootstock RSB1.
In Cuyama, where water resources are limited, we are continually seeking advanced methods to improve our irrigation practices while prioritizing water conservation Recently, Sunridge has initiated trials utilizing subsurface irrigation technology, and early results indicate this innovative approach is yielding promising outcomes for vine growth.
Some of the benefits of this new system are:
Subsurface irrigation minimizes water loss due to evaporation from the soil surface and reduces runoff. Water is delivered directly to the root zone of the plants
Subsurface fertigation effectively reduces fertilizer runoff while ensuring that nutrients are delivered directly to the root zone, promoting optimal plant growth.
The absence of standing water or overly wet soil on the vineyard floor significantly diminishes weed growth, allowing for healthier crop development
Subsurface irrigation helps preserve soil structure by reducing compaction and erosion, which can be exacerbated by traditional surface irrigation methods over time
Many pathogens are spread through water, and with each vine having its own reservoir, subsurface irrigation can help minimize plant-toplant contamination
By eliminating standing water on the soil surface, this irrigation method removes a potential water source for rodents
Over the past two years, Sunridge has actively sought to explore new opportunities for collaborations with table grape breeders allowing us to expand our offerings and provide our clients with a wider array of innovative varieties
In our previous newsletter, we proudly announced our newfound partnership with ARRA/Grapa™, highlighting the high demand varieties it brings to our portfolio Since then, we have recently introduced the Andriske table grape varieties from an Australian breeding program Last winter, we had the privilege of hosting both Gary and Julie Andriske from Andriske Research/Vineyards to tour our nursery They also inspected the latest varieties released to us from FPS UC Davis, which we were then propagating for our mother blocks
Sunridge is proud to be the exclusive nursery for North America supporting this emerging program's growth and we look forward to strengthening our collaboration with their team
As we enhance our offerings and explore new avenues, we remain committed to delivering exceptional quality and variety to our customers We invite you to visit our website to view our latest catalog and discover the full range of varieties available in your region Here are the programs we currently support with more to come!
Sunridge Nurseries is thrilled to announce the acquisition of our very own drone for conducting independent field sprays and applications Horticulturist/Agronomist, Linsi Gutierrez, and Shop Maintenance Assistant, Jose Sanchez are currently undergoing the rigorous process of completing certification to hold both a Journeyman Pilot License from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in order to operate the drone, as well as an Apprentice Pilot Certificate from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CA DPR) to dispense agricultural products when applying treatments to our fields
Here are just a few of the benefits of utilizing our new drone technology will assist us to provide our clients with the healthiest vines
Timing is crucial in pest control, and being able to quickly identify and treat problems is essential With our drone, we can swiftly respond to issues in the field without having to rely on scheduling external services This results in more effective treatments and reduces the need for repeated applications
Protect vines from damage while reducing carbon footprint.
During the early stages of the season, maneuvering tractors through vine rows can be challenging without causing damage In the past, we have had to hire helicopters for treatments By using our drone, we can avoid the need for tractors and helicopters, reducing emissions as the drone operates on batteries
Allows for more precise applications. Its pre-programmed flight path avoids obstacles, while the rates and droplet sizes of products can be adjusted during flight For instance, near sensitive areas, the drone can be programmed to use larger droplets to minimize drift
Helps optimize our productivity.
Traditionally, treating all our acres with a ground rig takes over a week With the drone, this task can be completed in a day or day and a half, depending on conditions This efficiency saves time and resources, making our operations more streamlined and effective
We are excited to announce the forthcoming installation of a California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS) station at Cuyama Ranch Sunridge has generously donated the land and will be responsible for maintenance of the station as well as the 6 acres required for the station The data collected will be available to anyone through the CIMIS website The new station will enhance our ability to monitor and manage irrigation practices, ensuring optimal water usage and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this important initiative!
At last year's preseason company meeting, President Rick Burnes proudly announced the official launch of the Stoller Family Scholarship program Co-founder, Terri Stoller was delighted to see her long-standing vision of giving back to the families who have been an integral part of our journey come to fruition Our dedicated employees, who are not only passionate about their work but also deeply committed to our mission, play a vital role in our success The fact that 50% of our team members have been with Sunridge for over a decade speaks volumes about the integrity and values that drive our business forward
