We followed the Ohio River from its beginning in Pittsburgh to Louisville, passing countless coal powered generating plants that provide electricity to a major portion of our country. We visited coalfields of Appalachia in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia, witnessing the impact that mining and power generation have had on the environment. We saw sites of great labor unrest and saw evidence of poverty and of mining’s human toll of mine disasters and illness. However, we found a land rich in natural beauty and were warmed by the friendliness of the people who live there.
