to Add Curb Appeal to Your Home 1. Accent a bay window by adding window panels below the opening. 2. Add classic crown or fascia dentil molding beneath gutters and eaves to heighten the appearance of your home. 3. If you have a ceiling fan on a front porch, add a two-piece ceiling medallion around the fan’s base to add style to your entire porch. 4. Replace older, rotting wooden louvers with low-maintenance polyurethane louvers. 5. Upgrade the look of your entryway by adding a new brass kick plate and polishing your door hardware. 6. Creating a
Garden

outh Texas is home to several species of butterflies. These tiny, colorful creatures possess the power to capture the attention of young and old alike. Creating a butterfly garden is more than just planting colorful flowers to attract them. Like any other creature, butterflies have specific needs when it comes to their habitat.

Here are a few plants that are sure to create a colorful, nectarrendering, butterflyfriendly habitat right in your own backyard. Blue sage is a native Texas perennial, drought-resistant and blooms in shades of purple and blue nearly year-round. Texas lantana thrives in hot Texas temperatures. It produces bright colorful blossoms and attracts swallowtails, sulphurs and brush-foot butterflies. Asclepias is also known as milkweed and comes in several varieties. The most common variety in Texas is also known as Antelope Horn. Tropical Milkweed is not native to Texas but is widely available in garden centers and blooms in bright bold colors. Zinnias grow well in the Texas heat and are easy to grow from a seed. They are annuals, so be prepared to plant them each spring. Buddleia (butterfly bush) usually bloom mid-July through frost, in vibrant shades of purple, red and white. A butterfly garden will not only attract colorful creatures to your space, but will also create a colorful atmosphere in which you can relax and enjoy. Don’t forget to feed the next generation of butterflies— the caterpillars! Medicaid Myths .. Debunked 1) You have to spend down all your money to apply for Medicaid. I recently assisted an individual with total assets of $309,896 that met Medicaid eligibility. The amount paid to the Nursing facility for her care is her Social Security check of $950 and $2300 in the form of a one year annuity. Her long term insurance pays the additional $3,000 of her monthly $6,000 bill for her care. The excess assets were placed in an irrevocable trust for the benefit of her family members. 2) If there is a couple, and one enters the Nursing Facility, you have to spend down 1/2 of your assets. In the situation of a couple where one member goes into the facility and the other remains in the community, there is no limit on the equity value of the home (typically $552,000). With 215,000 in total assets, they were able to conserve the total amount of the assets by purchasing a 4 month annuity and getting all the funds back to the community spouse in 4 equal installments of $25,000 each. Most all cases of one spouse in the NF, the entire amount of the assets can be saved for the spouse remaining in the community. 3) If you give away assets, you have to wait 3 years to apply for Medicaid. Actually, there is a look back period of 5 years for all transfers. The penalties begin when the nursing facility resident meets all eligibility requirements, not at the time of the transfer. For every $156.34 transferred or given away, there is a one day penalty for the resident. Once the Medicaid requirements are met, the resident can receive Medicaid but due to the penalty must pay their daily rate. There are also many programs for those low income individuals in the community to obtain many types of services, an attendant to assist them with personal care, meal preparation or meals on wheels, housekeeping, respite, emergency response buttons to enable them to stay in the community for a longer period of time. There are other programs to assist with payment of the Medicare premiums each month and some low income individuals qualify for a program that in addition to the Medicare premium will also pay for co-payments and deductibles for Medicare. How to Avoid Probate, Courts and Lawyers
W
hat is probate? Probate is the court administered distribution of the assets of someone who died. Simple? No! Almost everyone familiar with probate tries to avoid it. Today, we have a relatively inexpensive and uncomplicated way to avoid attorneys (fees) and courts (costs) when someone dies. And that is why probate is voluntary.
Why should you have a Revocable Trust? The Revocable Trust is the Will substitute of our time. Assets bearing the name of one’s own Trust avoid probate and can be distributed almost immediately without courts and lawyers. You (and/or your spouse) control the Trust during your lifetimes, and nothing changes. Are Trusts only for the rich? Absolutely not! Trusts are for anyone who wants the following: 36

1. To avoid long drawn-out probate; 2. To avoid expensive filing fees, court costs and attorney’s fees. Some attorneys charge a percentage of the estate; 3. A simple way for Successor Trustees to distribute assets to heirs quickly; 4. Maintain privacy… Trusts are difficult to attack because, unlike probate, the information is not available to others on the Internet, preventing scams; 5. Protect children, both young and old, from bad investments, a bad marriage, etc. with staged distributions over time. A Trust is nothing more than a written document. There are three parties to a Trust. First, the Grantor, who retitles their accounts to the Trust; second, the Trustee who watches over the assets, just as you do now; third, the Beneficiary, who gets to enjoy the assets. You (and your spouse, if married) are all three. Nothing changes in your lifetime until the last of you dies. At that time, the Successor Trustee (anyone of your choosing) pays creditors and distributes the assets. As its name suggests, a Revocable Trust is revocable and can be amended anytime you wish. The Trust does not file a separate tax return. The steps are simple: Change the signature card on your bank accounts from your name to the name of your Trust (John and Mary Smith Revocable Trust). You probably don’t even need new checks. You can do the same with any stock brokerage trading accounts. Have an attorney prepare a deed for any property you own from you to your Trust. You make the trust the beneficiary to any insurance policies and retirement accounts. How does this avoid probate, you ask? Now the Trust owns everything, and Trusts do not die. Therefore there is no need for probate. The Successor Trustee pays creditors, final funeral and medical expenses, and distributes the assets. It’s that simple. And this is why probate is voluntary! How can I determine if home care is necessary? When self-care at home becomes difficult and/or family caregivers are not available to assist, home care may be the answer. Home care often relieves family members of basic caregiving functions and makes it possible to spend quality time, rather than the functional caregiving time. Home care is often easier and faster than moving to an institutional care setting and allows the senior to stay at home in familiar surroundings.

Home Care vs Home Health Care
What is home health care? When the need is for more than home and personal care, a home health care agency may be required. Home health care provides skilled medical services (such as administration and adjustment of medication levels, monitoring and dressing of wounds, etc.) in the home by trained medical personnel. Home health care is always ordered and supervised by a physician. What is home care? Simply put, home care is non-medical, personal assistance provided in the home. Home care may include help with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene. It may include a wide range of services: taking and recording vital signs, assistance in the bathroom, light housekeeping, meal preparation, companionship, grocery shopping and pharmacy errands, home safety supervision, medication reminders, bill-paying, laundry, and transportation. Will my insurance cover the costs? Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurances are sources of payment for receiving home and home health care. Home Healthcare services are typically medically necessary. They are paid for by Medicare or other health insurance, and have been ordered by a physician. Ingredients 2 each bananas, cut lengthwise then halved 1 tablespoon butter 1/4 cup light brown sugar

Directions Heat butter in a pan until melted. Add sugar and cinnamon and cook until sugar is dissolved. Add the vanilla extract and banana liqueur. When simmering add the bananas and cook until slightly soft. Carefully add the rum and tilt the pan until liquid catches fire—let it burn out. Plate by scooping ice cream into bowl, place banana pieces over it in a nice pattern. Scoop liquid over it generously. Find 86

ecent trends in the U.S. population have caught the attention of many individuals planning for and facing retirement.
The percentage of people age 65 and older is expected to increase from approximately 13 percent of the total U.S. population in 2010 to an estimated 20 percent by the year 2030.1 That is roughly 72 million people age 65 or older – more than double the number there were in 2000.2 At the same time, Americans are living longer than ever before. Those reaching age 65 can now expect to live another 18.6 years and the population of those over age 85 is projected to increase from 5.7 million in 2000 to 12.9 million in 2020.3 These factors, compounded with the steadily rising cost of healthcare, have created concerns about elder care issues such as burdening family members and the longevity of personal finances. With all of these considerations in mind, there is an apparent need to plan comprehensively to ensure you and your aging family members are taken care of in the best way possible. A common first step in the process begins with collecting important documents. For example, gather your Will, Medical Power of Attorney for health care decisions, Statutory Durable Power of Attorney for business decisions, Directive to Physicians for end-of-life direction, titles to real estate and automobiles, and life insurance and annuity contracts. It will be important to have all of these documents on hand should a health issue arise or something hinders you from acting on your own behalf.

Similarly, it is important to organize and collect copies of medical and banking information such as your medical insurance and Medicare cards including supplemental or gap coverage, recent or annual bank account statements and income tax returns. This will help streamline the decision process for elder care. Finally, creating a list of additional considerations such as medicines including type and dosage, list of doctors, and a summary of your income, assets and debts should all be kept in a well-marked and fixed location in your home. After the appropriate documents have been collected, start making decisions about long term care. There are many levels of long term care: independent living, assisted living, nursing care and skilled nursing. Visit several locations and identify the desirable facilities that can provide each of these types of care and will be geographically close to family and friends, economically feasible and provide the sort of lifestyle you enjoy. If you are able to remain in your home with appropriate nursing care, contact various care management firms in your area to discuss options before you need them. Once you have considered your care alternatives, create your own plan and write it down. Along with a written plan, include brochures and notes of your discussions with the different facilities and professionals with whom you have visited. Show your loved ones where your important documents and information are stored, and share your plan with those who will be responsible to help you implement it. Discuss your desires in detail so your loved ones have a thorough understanding of how you wish to be cared for in your later years. Finally – and most importantly – take care of yourself. Exercise appropriately, eat healthily and recognize your physical and mental limitations as they become apparent. If you need help doing housework or running errands, ask for it or hire someone to do it for you. The longer you stay physically and mentally active, the less costly your care will be and the longer you will be able to maintain your current lifestyle and remain independent. Recognize that health is an asset that can be nourished and grown. With rising healthcare costs and many individuals facing retirement, it is important to position yourself well for the future, to live comfortably in retirement while making certain you and your family are cared for. Ingredients: 30 ounces 68 percent bittersweet chocolate discs 32 ounces heavy whipping cream 15 ounces sugar 1 cup water 18 large eggs
Photography | Jordan Vineyard and Winery Directions: Gently heat bittersweet chocolate over a double boiler, stirring constantly until melted (120 F) and set aside. In a non-reactive bowl, whip cream to soft peaks and set aside. In a heavy-bottomed sauce pot over medium heat, combine sugar and water and heat to a soft-crack stage (282 F). In a stainless steel or copper bowl, beat yolks until thickened and then slowly pour sugar-water into yolks. Gently fold whipped cream into yolk mixture. Once the whipped cream is fully incorporated, gently fold in the tempered chocolate, reserving 3 ounces for the drizzle. Pour mousse into individual bowls or one large, decorative bowl. Drizzle reserved chocolate over the top and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour. Mousse may be kept refrigerated for up to 48 hours. Find

Mayan Chocolate Truffles Courtesy of Kerrville Hills Winery and Lovin’ Spoonful Ingredients: 1 32-ounce bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 cans of condensed milk 2 to 3 teaspoons vanilla extract dash of red pepper (cayenne works well) 1 cup Hersey’s Cocoa, natural unsweetened 1 cup Hersey’s Special Dark Cocoa
Photography | Kerrville Hills Winery Directions: On the top part of a double boiler, combine chocolate chips and condensed milk, stirring until hot and the chocolate chips are completely melted. When the chocolate chips are melted, add vanilla and pepper, stirring until smooth. Pour into a different bowl or container. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 hours. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, combine a cup of each of the cocoa powders and a dash of red pepper, being cautious not to use too much. Once chocolate mixture is cool but still slightly warm, roll it into bite size balls. Place chocolate balls in the cocoa powder mix and roll until well coated. Communication Tips for Those Afflicted with Alzheimer’s by MAYO CLINIC STAFF
A
lzheimer’s disease presents many challenges, and communication is a big one. Because Alzheimer’s disease slowly erodes verbal communication skills, your loved one’s words and expressions may make little or no sense to you. In turn, your loved one may have trouble deciphering your words. The resulting misunderstandings can fray tempers all around, making communication even more difficult. Here’s help easing the frustration.
What to expect Alzheimer’s damages pathways in the brain, which makes it difficult to find the right words and to understand what others are saying. Your loved one may incorrectly substitute one word for another or invent an entirely new word to describe a familiar object. He or she may get stuck in a groove—like a skipping record—and repeat the same word or question over and over. 102

A person living with Alzheimer’s may also: • Lose his or her train of thought • Struggle to organize words logically • Need more time to understand what you’re saying • Curse or use offensive language Despite the challenges, you can communicate effectively with a loved one who has Alzheimer’s. Consider these tips: • Speak clearly. Introduce yourself. Speak in a clear, straightforward manner. • Show respect. Avoid secondary baby talk and diminutive phrases, such as “good girl.” Don’t assume that your loved one can’t understand you, and don’t talk about your loved one as if he or she weren’t there. • Stay present. Maintain eye contact, and stay near your loved one so that he or she will know that you’re listening and trying to understand. • Avoid distractions. Communication may be difficult—if not impossible—against a background of competing sights and sounds. • Keep it simple. Use short sentences and plain words. As the disease progresses, yes-no questions may work best, and only one question at a time is best. Break down requests into single steps. • Don’t interrupt. It may take longer than you expect for your loved one to process and respond. Avoid criticizing, hurrying and correcting. • Use visual cues. Sometimes gestures or other visual cues promote better understanding than words alone. Rather than simply asking if your loved one needs to use the toilet, for example, take him or her to the toilet and point to it. • Don’t argue. Your loved one’s reasoning and judgment will decline over time. To spare anger and agitation, don’t argue with your loved one. • Stay calm. Even when you’re frustrated, keep your voice gentle. Your nonverbal cues, including the tone of your voice, can send a clearer message than what you actually say. • Communicating with your loved one may be challenging, especially as the disease progresses. Remember, however, your loved one isn’t acting this way on purpose. Don’t take it personally. Use patience and understanding to help your loved one feel safe and secure. In Retirement
etting older is not a guarantee that you will stay married. Along with the freedom from yard work, fixing household problems and working, couples are rediscovering themselves and their partners.
Over dinner one evening, our friend looked at his wife and said, “I don’t know you in retirement.” My eyes grew wide and I happily expressed, “Wow, an honest man.” In truth, we never know our partner completely, and this is what keeps marriage exciting. We all laughed, but it was laughter over sharing a bittersweet truth. I don’t know many people who aren’t looking forward to retirement. Many of our friends have retired and they may talk about their trips, leisure golf games and weekends with the grandkids, but if you listen closely, you will also hear them talk about the difficulty of their transition. Preparing for retirement involves taking small steps. Letting go of work is a huge step, and it doesn’t matter if you complained about your job every day; when it is gone you will feel a void. grief work is part of the transition of retirement. Many couples don’t prepare for retirement emotionally. Whenever you idealize a transition, no matter if it is a marriage, a new baby or retirement, you are sure to be disappointed. Couples need to reacquaint themselves with their partner and revitalize their marriage. In essence, no one really knows their partner completely and when the other partner is going through a transition along with you, navigating the relationship can be tricky. Your marriage has to transition in a way it has not done before. Prior to retirement your outlook or vision together is always the future. During retirement, there is a heavy emphasis on the present. People become more aware of their mortality and the importance of living each day in the present. Developing a sense of exploration and curiosity is important, and actually helps predict how healthy you will be through your retirement, both physically and emotionally. If you are on the verge of retirement, these suggestions may help you make the emotional transition as well as the physical ones of actually ceasing your employment:
• IT’S OK TO GRIEVE
Grieving is an important part of retirement, and it does happen whether you acknowledge it or not. It usually presents as sadness, anger or irritability. The more you can journal about how you feel or have a good friend—hopefully your spouse is a good listener—the easier it will be to get through the process.
• STAY ACTIVE
Physical activity has never been more important than in your retirement. No matter what happens in your life, take 30 minutes each day to be active. Marriages improve with walks; there is no healthier way to begin conversation.
• BE INTIMATE
Keep intimacy with your partner in your retirement years. Couples who are more intimate have healthier hearts, minds and bodies. Date nights are not exclusive for the young. Keep them in your marriage ’til death do you part.

FORM FRIENDSHIPS Make new friends and keep the old. The more social you are with other couples, the better your own marriage becomes. Other couples give us new thoughts, new reflections and help us think out of our own box. They also keep laughter in our life.
• TRY NEW THINGS
This sounds like a cliché, but try new things. It can be a new spiritual retreat, a new boating club, or a pet owners club and anything in between. When you try new things, you help the brain form new connections. If your brain ever needed new connections, it needs them in the senior years.
•
SEPARATE INTERESTS Keep your own interests separate from your partner. The more interests you can bring to the relationship, the more the relationship is going to thrive. Also, the more open and accepting you can be of your partner— who is no longer in the mom or dad role—the more interesting and exciting your retirement can be. Kids may help stabilize a marriage, and work gets us in a routine—when those two roles are finished, the greatest role may be freedom; re-learning who we are and who we are married to.

WHEN SHOULD A DECISION ABOUT ENTERING A HOSPICE PROGRAM BE MADE, AND WHO SHOULD MAKE IT?
Any time during a life-limiting illness is an appropriate time to discuss care options, including hospice. By law, the decision belongs to the patient. Understandably, many people are uncomfortable with the idea of stopping an aggressive effort to “beat” a disease. Eulogy
T
he purpose of a eulogy is to acknowledge and share information about a person’s life. It is a great honor for someone to present and it’s an important part of the grieving process for the presenter, as well as the audience. A good place to start is to make a list of thoughts and memories you’d like to share. While others might not be comfortable or able to give their own eulogy, they might find great comfort in sharing memories with you that you could incorporate into the eulogy. Things you might include are stories, quotes, expressions of love or prayers, all of which can be delivered in a serious or humorous manner depending on what you feel is appropriate. In an effort to have the audience connected and involved in your tribute, the eulogy can be compiled from private memories that your audience might not be aware of as well as personal traits and details of the loved one that all will remember. You will want to include any accomplishments or honors no matter how big or small that were especially important to your loved one. Memories shared should always acknowledge the person in a positive manner and recognize them for who they were accurately. Once you are ready to write the eulogy, decide on how you will begin, then pick the main thoughts and memories that you wish to share and finally determine how you will close. You need to properly introduce yourself when you begin and have a summarizing statement to share when you close. You can read from your notes, but practice giving the eulogy and change any part that does not feel like natural conversation in your own words. Presenting a eulogy can cause great anxiety. Stopping at any time to collect your thoughts or emotions and then continuing when you are ready is understandable and acceptable. If you decide that you cannot continue, simply skip to your final statement. It is the message about the impact of your loved that is important, not the delivery, so just be yourself.

Directions for the Disposition of Remains A person may provide written directions for the disposition, including cremation, of their remains in a will, a prepaid funeral contract, or a written instrument called “Appointment of Agent to Control Disposition of Remains,” 124

A person listed in above has the right, duty, and liability provided by that subsection only if there is no person in a priority listed before the person. If there is no person with the duty to inter and: 1). an inquest is held, the person conducting the inquest shall inter the remains, and; 2). an inquest is not held, the county in which the death occurred shall inter the remains. Any dispute among any of the persons listed concerning their right to control the disposition, including cremation, of a decedent’s remains shall be resolved by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Texas Law dictates that both birth and death certificates are deemed confidential for a set period of time. Birth certificates are confidential for 75 years, and death certificates are confidential for 25 years after the death has occurred. If a birth or death certificate is requested before this period of time elapses, certified copies of these documents can only be obtained by a qualified applicant. A qualified applicant can be an immediate family member (by blood or marriage), a legal guardian, or the legal representative of the person for whom the document is requested. If you are not a qualified applicant, you may request a verification of 126
a birth or death record. Fees charged for copies of birth and death certificates by the different county offices may vary slightly – contact your local office about cost for copies of Birth and Death Certificates. Certified copies of the birth and death certificates are issued with a state seal and are printed on security paper. Heirloom birth certificates have a different cost and are printed on special paper that boasts a design celebrating Texas. The heirloom certificate ($60) is only offered through Austin, Texas. Funeral homes will supply certified copies of a death certificate for a small fee if requested at the time funeral arrangements are made. It is recommended that you get at least twelve copies of the certificate and notify anyone with whom the deceased had an account. VERIFICATION OF BIRTH AND DEATH The verification of a birth or death record is NOT a certified copy of the birth or death certificate, but a letter with the person’s name, date of occurrence, county where the birth or death took place and a state file number. Letters may not be available at all birth and death registrars. Verifications are available from 1903 to the present date. Fees for birth and death verification (for regular mail or walk-in service) range from $22–$30. This fee is non-refundable for records that are not located. Additional fees will apply for faxing and overnight services.
Deceased Identity Theft To avoid identity theft of a deceased person, it is recommended that you take the following steps: • Scale back the obituary—don’t provide too much information. • Notify banks and creditors. • Contact credit reporting bureaus— request decedent’s credit report and flag as “deceased.” • Report death to Social Security; they will

Helping Patients and Families to Choose the Best End-of-Life Care Option Provided by Houston Solari Hospice • Educate yourself on local hospices. Your doctor or local hospitals should be able to recommend hospice providers in your area. Be sure to take note whether the hospice providers you are considering also have inpatient hospice homes in the event that pain and symptoms become unmanageable and 24-hour care is needed. • Contact the hospices. Compile a list of potential hospices to contact. Ask whether they are accredited, certified and licensed. If accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body, such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the hospice has sought accreditation and is committed to providing quality care. State health departments certify hospices, guaranteeing that the facility meets safety and health regulations. Licensing requirements vary by state and are generally overseen by its respective health department. • Ask for and check references. Ask for references from professionals, such as a hospital or community social workers. Talk with these people about their experiences. Also check with the Better Business Bureau or the State Attorney General’s office to find out whether any complaints or lawsuits have been filed against the hospices on your list. • Inquire about a preliminary evaluation and plan of care. As part of a patient’s preliminary evaluation, a hospice should determine the types of services needed for the patient. The evaluation should contain what the patient can and can’t do for themselves, consultation with family physicians already providing the patient with medical treatment and consultation with family members. • Discuss the treatment plan process. After the preliminary evaluation, the hospice should develop a treatment plan that is carefully created with the patient and family and given to all service providers to ensure smooth coordination of care. The plan of care should be clearly written, with copies given to all loved ones involved. The plan should list specific duties, work hours and days, and contact information for the hospice care supervisor. Inquire how frequently the plan is reviewed and updated to accommodate any changing needs. • Learn about the hospice staff. Hospice patients are cared for by an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, clergy, volunteers and therapists. Ask about the patient-to-caregiver ratios to make sure that the right amount of care is received. Ask about the continuity of care to determine whether or not the patient will have the same caregivers. This insight can give an indication how satisfied the hospice staff is or if there is a high turnover rate.

Hospice
ospice care is a philosophy of care that accepts dying as a natural part of life. When death is inevitable, hospice seeks neither to hasten nor postpone it. Hospice provides care, comfort and support for persons with life-limiting conditions as well as their families.
How Does Hospice Work? Hospice care is for any person who has a life-threatening or terminal illness. All hospices consider the patient and family together as the unit of care. Most reimbursement sources require a prognosis of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Patients with both cancer and non-cancer illnesses are eligible to receive hospice care. The majority of hospice patients are cared for in their own homes or the homes of a loved one. “Home� may also be broadly construed to include services provided in nursing homes or hospitals. Typically, a family member serves as the primary caregiver and when appropriate, helps make decisions for the hospice patient. Members of the hospice staff make regular visits to assess the patient and provide additional care or other services. Hospice staff is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Who is the Hospice Team? Hospice care is a family-centered approach that includes, at a minimum, a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, and trained volunteers. They work together focusing on the dying patient’s needs; physical, psychological, or spiritual. The goal is to help keep the patient as pain-free as possible until death. The hospice team develops a care plan that meets each patient’s individual needs for pain management and symptom control. How is Hospice Paid for? Hospice is paid for through the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Medicaid Hospice Benefit, and private insurers. If a person does not have coverage through Medicare, Medicaid or a private insurance company, hospices will work with the person and their family to ensure needed services can be provided. Who is Eligible for Medicare Hospice Benefits? Hospice care is covered under Medicare Part A (hospital Insurance). You are eligible for Medicare hospice benefits when you meet all of the following conditions: • You are eligible for Medicare Part A (hospital Insurance), and • Your doctor and the hospice medical director certify that you are terminally ill and probably have less than six months to live, and • You sign a statement choosing hospice care instead of routine Medicare covered benefits for your terminal illness, and • You receive care from a Medicare-approved hospice program. Please note: Medicare will still pay for covered benefits for any health problems that aren’t related to your terminal illness. What Does Medicare Cover? Medicare covers these hospice services and pays nearly all of their costs: • Doctor services and Nursing care • Medical equipment (like wheelchairs or walkers) • Medical supplies (like bandages and catheters) • Drugs for symptom control and pain relief • Short-term hospital care, including respite and inpatient for pain/symptom management • Home health aide and homemaker services • Physical, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy • Social work services and Dietary counseling • Grief support to help you and your family Please note: You will only have to pay part of the cost for outpatient drugs and inpatient respite care. The Medicare Hospice Benefit Does Not Cover the Following: • Treatment intended to cure your terminal illness. You should talk with your doctor if you are thinking about potential treatment to cure your illness. • Medications not directly related to your hospice diagnosis. Hospice team 130

members will consult with the hospice physician and will inform you and your family which drugs and/or medications are covered and which ones are not covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit. • Room and board aren’t covered by Medicare. You may receive hospice services wherever you live, even in a nursing home, however, the Medicare Hospice Benefit does not pay for nursing home room and board. Respite Care and Medicare Respite care is care given to a hospice patient by another caregiver so that the usual caregiver can rest. As a hospice patient, you may have one person who takes care of you every day, like a family member. Sometimes your caregiver needs someone to take care of you for a short time while they do other things that need to be done. During a period of respite care, you might be cared for in a Medicare-approved facility, such as a hospice residential facility, hospital, or nursing home. How Do I Begin Receiving Hospice? Anyone can inquire about hospice services. You or your loved one may call a local hospice and request services. The hospice staff will then contact your physician to determine if a referral to hospice is appropriate. Another way to inquire about hospice is to talk with your physician, and he or she can make a referral to hospice. Hospice can begin as soon as a ‘referral’ is made by the person’s doctor. As a hospice patient, you always have the right to stop getting hospice care and receive the “traditional” Medicare coverage you had before electing hospice. All care that you receive for your illness must be given by your hospice team.
