Completed in 2007, the Lokey Laboratories provide ultra-high performance instrument space while maximizing research collaboration.

Centrally located within the Sciences District, the laboratories contain more than 20 highly specialized imaging instruments that support advanced research in materials science and nanofabrication. This signature facility is an integral part of the Integrative Science Complex at the University of Oregon and is associated with the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI).

Constructed predominantly belowgrade, the 26,000 square foot structure is placed directly on bedrock, enhancing building performance characteristics and preserving existing campus open space.

To promote interaction, the instrument labs are arranged around a central, skylit collaboration area, bringing together faculty and industry representatives from materials science, molecular biology, genomics, neuroscience and optics.

The only portions of the facility that project above grade are the skylight—a sculptural element rising out of the redesigned Science Green—and a small, glazed entrance/lobby structure, carefully situated between two existing research buildings.

DESIGN CONCEPT BUILDING

The building design addresses several challenges inherent in the building program and site location—most significantly, how to provide a visible entrance to a significant facility that is predominantly underground.

The new, glazed lobby space is located at the northwest corner of the site between two existing buildings, Huestis and Streisinger Halls, and aligns with Science Walk, a pedestrian way that connects the majority of existing research facilities in the campus’ Sciences District.

From this understated entry the visitor descends 17 feet to the laboratory and instrument areas below.

The primary instrument and collaboration spaces are positioned at the opposite southeast corner of the site to avoid undesired vibration conditions and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

A diagonal circulation spine visually and physically connects the lowest stair landing to a central, skylit collaboration area.

The interior design emphasizes openness and transparency. The shared instrument labs for the Center for Advanced Materials Characterization in Oregon (CAMCOR) are arranged around a central collaboration space with an overhead skylight that brings natural daylight into the area. Glass partitions showcase the remarkable instruments and their capabilities for current and potential colleagues while providing separation from the collaboration activities. Glass partitions are used at the Nanofabrication and Semi-Conductor Labs, emphasizing the equipment, operating technicians and services.

Where feasible, an equipment service galley rings the back side of the instrument labs and provides easy access to accessory equipment and electrical panels while further isolating the support equipment from the highly sensitive instruments. Exposed structure facilitates easy utility access and are hung ceilings are provided only where necessary to enhance equipment performance.

To further minimize vibration and EMI in the instrument space, the facility’s equipment needs are consolidated in the more remote, northwest corner of the site, adjacent to similar functions in adjoining buildings. A new wet mechanical room is located in underutilized existing space, thus removing pumps and other objectionable equipment from the new construction footprint. An unused elevator shaft has been converted to provide a pathway for the building exhaust ductwork. The new fan units are placed on the roof of the adjoining building’s elevator/ stair core and are shielded, both visually and acoustically. The original floor plan includes unfinished areas for expansion of the adjacent zebrafish facility.

SITE

Science Green, the open space located on top of the new laboratories, reinforces the labs’ campus prominence along 13th Avenue, accommodating public assembly, commencement ceremonies and similar events. The design emphasizes a generous, flat lawn area defined by an oval circulation path that clarifies campus movement patterns. Within the oval lawn, a small paved area and the projecting skylight mark the collaboration space below. On the northern perimeter of the Green, the new lobby is arranged on axis with Science Walk and leads through the public junction between Huestis and Streisinger Halls.

PROGRAM The Lokey Laboratories serve a wide array of advanced technology research and foster a synthesis of science users and equipment. The program contains an integrated series of functions, including the Center for Advanced Materials Characterization in Oregon (CAMCOR), Preparation Labs, Nanofabrication, Partnership Labs, and Office/Conference/Lobby space.

CAMCOR

Most of the facility’s highly sensitive characterization instrumentation is located here and the space showcases the instruments and fosters collaboration among users. Compatible instruments are consolidated into common spaces to maximize area utilization and smaller spaces provide specially-controlled environments for specific instruments.

Most of the CAMCOR spaces require stringent vibration performance characteristics (NIST-A) and tight temperature tolerance (68-72°F with 0.5°F variation within any 12-hour period).

The program accommodates a central collaboration area that includes informal conference areas as well as open office workstations for technical staff.

PREPARATION LABS

The Preparation Labs represent six shared laboratory support functions serving a variety of user research needs.

Many samples brought to the facility need additional processing in order to be analyzed with the imaging instruments or used in the Nanofabrication Lab. These Preparation Labs more closely resemble traditional wet chemistry laboratories and require conventional laboratory benches, plumbed services and chemical fume hoods.

NANOFABRICATION

The Nanofabrication area includes the Semiconductor Lab, Nanofabrication Lab, Photo-Lithography and a series of smaller dedicated instrument spaces.

The Semiconductor Lab is used to conduct materials research related to this specific industry and can be used for the University’s semiconductor internship program during the summer months. The adjacent Photolithography and Preparation Labs are directly related to the Semiconductor Lab and contain equipment for substrate preparation, deposition, etching and baking. A Nanofabrication Lab and other specialized instrument spaces complete this suite.

PARTNERSHIP LABS

The Partnership Labs are key elements and provide flexible laboratory and support space available for lease by industry and academic colleagues. The Labs provide traditional bench laboratory space to facilitate potential use as wet chemistry laboratories with chemical fume hoods.

These areas can be configured as a single, large, open area with bench space assigned as needed, or subdivided into discreet spaces and accessed individually via an internal hallway.

OFFICE/CONFERENCE/LOBBY

Office space is divided between private and prospective industry/academic colleagues. Five private offices for application managers are located adjacent to the CAMCOR space with an adjoining meeting/kitchen area. Three more offices for visiting colleagues are also provided. A shared conference room accommodates 12–15 people for meetings and audio-visual presentations. Additional open office workstations and informal meeting areas are provided in the central CAMCOR collaboration area. At the upper lobby a small business office provides a visible presence and identity for visitors entering the building at grade.
