Mission Statement
Our heartfelt mission is to rescue horses from the threat of slaughter, and secure loving homes with the distinctive commitment to lifelong follow up and guardianship. We tirelessly promote a universal understanding that horses require a lifetime commitment of enduring care Through the provision of resources, education and outreach to communities, individuals and other programs we meet their needs and continue our unwavering promise for a better world for horses.
SRF is feeding and caring for nearly 500+ trotters and pacers, nursing injuries, making them whole again, and following up every adoption so no horse is at risk again. Many of the adopted horses will out-live some of us; this is why managing today’s needs, as well as securing a future is important.
Ninety-two percent of funds raised to support these animals come from individuals who have a love and respect for these horses, 3% comes from harness racing organizations. Your individual gifts make the difference in the lives of these horses

2024 Marks SRF’S 35th Year of Helping Horses and Kids
SRF is unique as it remains the guardian for every one of its horses.
SRF is the oldest and largest Standardbred adoption program worldwide.
The number one adoption of SRF horses is trail riding. In the past three years alone, SRF has helped more than 2800 Standardbreds tagged to ship for slaughter. Now, without freezebrands, identifying Standardbreds crammed in kill pens will be nearly impossible, the risk to enter a packed pen and use a wand presents many issues.
SRF urges all to freezebrand their horse.
About 6% of the horses SRF finds tagged for slaughter are reunited with their racing owners who take them back.
About 10% of horses SRF finds tagged for slaughter are there because a good intention to give a horse to some one for life failed due to lifestyle change, this includes horses adopted into homes by people who care & other organizations
SRF has 252 trotters and pacers passed over for adoption but they are never considered retired. Another 245 horses are also waiting to be adopted under SRF’s expense and care.
Don’t be fooled by the folks/dealers from rural areas buying your horses. There are too many horses and some will run through the livestock auction and be sold for slaughter in Canada or Mexico. Others spared at that time will go on to live very hard lives used for logging, transportation and plowing fields. Upon their teens they are generaly turned over for fresh horses and resold at a livestock auction . For lack of buyers they are shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter..
SRF is proud to share 92% of all donations go to the horses.
SRF’s Programs!
Adoption, The largest Standardbred adoption program in the US.
Companion Horse Adoption Program (CHAPS), to help home companion only horses (not to be ridden). CHAPS will provide an annual stipend of $350 to these adopters for any medical care needed.
Rural Area Seminars are brought to communities using Standardbreds for transportation and as work-horses. The intent is to enlighten the folks on the best practices to keep their horses healthy and cared for.
The Adoption Partner (AP), Program provides a sound ridable horse to an approved individual to prepare for adoption as a riding companion and helps to find a loving home. They are compensated for their commitment based on the donation received for adoption.
Find My Horse provides access to a list of particular horses people are searching for. The list is made public to connect former owners, caretakers and admirers with horses they loved and lost track of.
