Real Bullets (Billy) has his own way of saying thank you. This son of Real Desire out of Banddera Hanover, was taken from a bad situation where his next chapter in life would have been his last. Shown in SRF’s previous newsletter, asking for help to remove his damaged eye, was his salvation. It wasn’t just surgery that was needed, it was assistance with his shipping back and forth 40 miles away to the equine hospital, and his after care.

Luckily he had special donors for all and we are so very grateful for this kindness and generosity. (continued on page 5)

It’s a nice story, the winner received a ticket as a holiday gift from her co-worker who told her that if she wins she has to tag her along. Time to step up because it happened! Donna’s co-worker, Linda Spoto and her husband, Victor, adopted two horses from SRF and just ten minutes away from SRF’s office. Once the ladies decided they preferred to Ride in Ireland, the Spotos came by dressed up in green!

Thank you to all who supported this very important fundraiser. It makes a great difference in how many horses get a little dignity in the end. It helps to fill our hayloft and grain bins, and when you have nearly 400 mouths to feed, especially in the winter months, it makes a world of difference. Go raibh maith agat! (thank you in Gaelic)

Elitlopp Raffle - It’s Coming!

The Elitlopp Race in Sweden has such a spectacular draw, and it’s one of the few events that takes over the city of Stockholm with excitment! Our winners rave about this trip! This year’s race is May 23–27, 2019, and yes, we will be mailing tickets to win this once in a lifetime getaway which includes: four (4) nights of accommodations; buffet breakfast each morning; a get-together-dinner; sightseeing with an English-speaking guide; tour to the Yearling sale, and Menhammar Stud farm; entrance and program to Solvalla racetrack on Saturday and Sunday.

Thank you for feeding and caring for the horses, and we can’t wait to call our winner in 2019 and tell them to pack those bags!

SRF Undressed All non-profits keep their taxes and audits in their office; they can be found online. If you wish to see first-hand let us know and we will show you the nearly 180 trotters and pacers in the Cream Ridge, NJ area, the 80 in Virginia, the 85 in Kentucky, 38 in NY, the 10 in N. Carolina, and the remaining scattered about. SRF does not own a farm, we depend on facilities to board and we check up on them just as we do with our adopters through veterinary follow-up forms. Six months will pass between checks and a horse can go downhill in a matter days, but this is the most reasonable way to manage this large herd. Anytime you wish to “check it out”, we will set it up for you wherever you care to visit. Hear something odd, come to the source for the facts, we are an open book.

Recent Rescued Horses When 35 horses were at risk recently, the volunteers at the Save Our Standardbreds From Slaughter, (SOSS) a group that leans on SRF, stepped up and put endless hours into helping every one of the horses tagged to ship to slaughter. It was a huge undertaking for SOSS and SRF. Numerous press releases were sent out pleading for help. Not only were donations needed, but home offers were just as important. SRF, having nearly 400 feed tubs to fill every day, and all the care required, was not able to home any, but was able to take on facilitating their safety.

Phillipedes, the 14 year old son of Angus Hall, will head north soon for some dignity and a well deserved retirement.

Sponsors were requested when home offers were thinning. There was a mare in foal; a 6 year old with a broken hip, among other devastating injuries; and several in rough shape. One mare, last owned by someone who lives in the next town over from SRF’s office, showed physical signs of just being weaned. Two were sick, one had rubbed harness marks, another healed scars where a twitch was used on her nose, and Phillipedes looked so broken that the farm caretaker was in tears. Lucky for him he will be going to a veterinarian with a background in harness racing to be nursed and loved until he becomes whole again.

He will need to ship to Illinois, but he is not able to withstand the trip until his condition improves. Party Lights had a leg injury requiring a veterinarian and treatment daily not just for medication, but for cleaning, dedication and wrapping as well. An author, who has been published often in the equine arena, Hoof Beats as well, boards where a few are in quarantine and cares for this horse every day to help.

A few were purchased from the pen directly and homed. We have seen this before and hope it is successful; in the past some purchased privately were turned around and were back in the pen again.

SRF Kids Rock!

Remember these guys? Just a few years ago they were introduced to SRF’s horses in the kids’ program and now look at their confidence! Dylan Irving and his friend are so comfortable around horses and have grown to be wonderful young men. Today, they lend a hand at SRF, now they can even trim a hoof or two!

Southern Pursuit N may be nearly 17 hands of New Zealand bloodlines but around SRF’s kids he’s pony size.

The bigger the horse, it seems the quieter he is. This guy endorses that.

And what’s better than having some attention from theses pretty young ladies, the fussing is endless.

Yes, Horses Can Have Food Allergies

Recent Rescue Horses (continued from page 3) Fair Winds Farm, who is not only homing one, another mare they had bred, but they have offered to foal out the mare, a huge undertaking needing experienced help. Mom & baby still need a home once they are ready.

SRF pleaded for homes and sponsors because of the burden it would had to take on, and people really stepped up, but homes and sponsors fell through, and a few potential adopters did not pass SRF’s screening. Home offers and sponsors are still very much needed, or funds to care for the few now left without help.

All with homes to go to are in quarantine filling their bellies, getting their feet trimmed, teeth attended to, wormed and getting ready for a trip to their new loving home.

This is an area not well understood, and thankfully allergies are very rare in horses. It is advised to look for hives, and itchiness. In severe cases a horse can self-injure. Speak to your veterinarian about relief but usually antihistamines are used, and in severe cases, corticosteroids. Some of the known allergies include alfalfa, beet pulp, bran, barley, buckwheat, clover, oats, chicory, wheat, St. John’s Wort, feed additives and supplements. These horses were found at what is referred to as an Amish sale.

A few success stories! Of the 35 horses rescued, Walnut Hall took home one of their horses that they had bred. Fair Winds will also take home the mare they had bred, Speed Week. They already have a few that were in trouble before and are now safe with them. Morrisville College has reached out to help Sparkling Credit. The Celii family is helping the two they had bred, and Newhart will return to his family in Canada.

The SOSS volunteers and all of us at SRF are most grateful for the kindness and generosity of people who helped these horses in such desperate need.

Real Bullets Update Continued from page 1

What Will This Mean, STA It is encouraging that the USTA has crafted the Standardbred Transition Alliance (STA) and hopefully the business plan, funding, and operating plan will be done and approved in 2019. What will this mean for SRF? We do not know. What we do know is that SRF has nearly 400 horses it is feeding and caring for today at a cost of $20-28,000 a week, this is without consideration of administrative, and fund-raising expenses. One hundred and eighty are retired for life under SRF’s expense and care, as they are elderly or only comfortable in pasture. Semi-annual follow-up is done on every adopted horse, some who may outlive many of us. The anticipated support, from the STA once qualified to receive, will be helpful, but we ask our supporters to stick by us as the STA will only fund specific needs, and that is expected to be limited. The SRF will never stop needing your direct support, it is how we get help to the horses quickly, can support those passed over by adopters due to age or injury, follow-up every adopted horse since 1989 semi-annually to be sure each horse is well cared for in their home, and be there should an adopted horse needs a new home.

Today, Billy “hangs” with Yugottahaveheart, an aged 17 hand gelding who came to SRF just about beaten to the ground after years working in a rural community. He is nearing total blindness.

Sue and Zoltan Hague, who are providing a wonderful temporary home, wants to see Billy get a loving home he so deserves. They say he is funny, and sweet and has no idea that he has one eye, his demeanor is lovely and quiet.

Saying Goodbye Saying goodbye after 28 years with SRF, these two best buds had great lives.

Sea It Again, a son of Seahawk Hanover, has been safe with SRF since 1993. He had 2 adopted homes through SRF and then came back in his senior years, but by then no one was interested in giving him a place to live out his life. He greeted us every morning til his days were becoming a little too much at age 31.

Your Mother’s Boy, a son of Secret Service has also been safe with SRF since 1993 and had 4 homes until he needed to come back to us, but being in his mid 20’s there was no one interested in adopting him either. He too lived out his days with SRF until he was no longer thriving.

Both boys are at peace after wonderful long lives.

Not many people think about the cost to put a horse at peace whenever life is too much, and the veterinarian says it’s the kind thing to do. In NJ the cost for the veterinarian and renderer is shockingly $500. Fortunately, SRF, because of it’s supporters, was able to give these boys the gift to live their long lives. Thank you to our donors for making it possible for them.

Euthanasia Some people say that horses in kill pens are there for a reason, meaning sick, lame, injured, or behavioral issues. Is this the way to treat a suffering animal? We see fractured eye sockets from being trampled in the pens, swollen faces, open wounds, nasal tumors, deformed legs from fractures that healed incorrectly, dropped suspensories dragging on the ground, neurologic issues, horses with EPM that has progressed so far that it is too late to treat, horses in their 30’s, horses emaciated, and occasionally a few that are there because no one wants them. So now what?

Some folks believe providing humane euthanasia rather then let them endure long grueling trips to slaughter is more humane. Some folks want to see every resource exhausted on one animal whether surgery, hospitalization and recovery even if there is only a small amount of hope, then to care for until they pass. But, then what happens to all the others in need when all the resources are applied to one?

In 2018, even if SRF had a blank check, several trotters and pacers that came through these kill pens and on to SRF were screaming for peace, at the recommendation of a veterinarian, we sadly sent some to heaven.

Please keep in mind, SRF’s program requires an adopter, no longer able to provide good care, to return the horse. SRF also never relinquishes ownership. Had the program been different, these two geldings would likely have been at great risk like so many others. Every organization is different. Ask questions before you make the decision to ask for help in finding your horse a life after racing or breeding. If you choose an organization that provides safety for life, please support further even $25 a year will help.

Windy Notch Hammer came to SRF from a “kill pen” where the pen owner had the horses so crammed in that this fella was likely a victim of the overcrowding.

It wasn’t just his head that showed swelling, but his legs too.

He is being loved on today at a foster home, but is in jeopardy because the farm is up for sale and he will need another loving foster or a loving home. Another horse came in from that pen with a fractured eye socket and injury to his cornea, and still, these are not the worst SRF has seen.

Three Horses Found With Altered Tattoos Scottrageous, a son of Big Towner was taken from a very risky situation where his next home would have been his last at the Canadian slaughterhouse. This big gelding looked broken, and that he was. Not only was he very lame and painful, he was in poor weight, his feet were uncared for, and his tattoo appeared to have been burned off. SRF took him in and reached out to the local humane police. Joanne Bicknese, DVM took the reins and helped every step of the way.

A DNA kit was ordered, hence, Scottrageous he is.

Dr. Bicknese became so attached to him that after a very short time that she took him home to a better life. She shared updates on Scotty, as she calls him, “He has undergone a tremendous transformation. I can see the beginnings of dapples under his coat. The severe injury from mutilation of his tattoo has healed. He continues to be treated for the egregious act of cruelty, shipping him hundreds of miles with severe painful lameness even at a walk, including laminitis. After an initial evaluation by Dr Steve Bokman, and with the expertise of farrier Dave Witkins in therapeutic shoeing, his painful feet are recovering and he can now trot soundly around the pasture, even up and down hills. After treatment for gastric ulcers and subsequent dental care from Dr Rachel Shuster, he has put on a couple hundred pounds since October, grown a healthy winter coat, and enthusiastically looks forward to his feed, a far cry from the depressed painful horse that arrived at SRF. Chiropractic treatment by Dr Shuster has further helped his overall mobility, and he now enjoys bucking and trotting around his paddock and visiting with the other horses and donkeys at his new home. Scotty continues to receive anti inf lammatory treatment, but the frequency and intensity is gradually being decreased. Overall, in 3 months, Scotty has been transformed from a crippled horse in pain, to a happy comfortable horse with a future, which, if he continues with his current rate of improvement, can include a little pleasure riding and driving. Although his former owners gave up on him, Scotty has not given up and looks forward to his new life and being a Possibilities Ambassador for SRF. In the past 3 months 2 other Standardbreds have come to SRF with altered tattoos. One, we learned, was brought to the New Holland sale, delivered from NY, the other has no tracing information. Identification is pending. We may think microchipping is better, and perhaps it is in some cases, but a chip can be painfully removed, and there is great concern that the “kill buyers” will not take the time to use the wand to identify each horse so help can be provided by volunteers, SRF, or owners and breeders looking for their horses.
