#01 Third Place Urban Design

TOD Project Karkardooma, Delhi

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) enables citizens to live and work within walking distance of high quality rapid transit. The project focuses on the macro and micro development around the Karkardooma Metro Station fascilitating ease of access, inducing people to walk and use public transit over private.

VISION

Establishing a place of identity for East Delhi by harnessing the recreational and commercial potential of the site through “Third Place Urbanism”. This was undertaken at three scales- Macro Scale, Mezo scale and Micro scale.

• To adapt strategies that enhance the environment of the third place cretaing a better experience.

• To develop the TOD zone into a city level destination by emphasizing on public spaces.

• To enhance the social experience by efficient use of the urban voids formed by the metro bridges.

• To use shared spaces in all contexts as an approach characterizing third place.

• To inculcate gathering spaces that support and enhance the surrounding context.

• To shape pedestrian friendly public spaces into the site, making socially active streets.
