The Federal Labor Government has passed legislation that will enact cuts to the National Disability Insurance Scheme aimed at removing 241,000 people from the scheme, a move the disability community has described as “devastating”.
Despite being so embedded and inseparable within our society, culture, politics, economy, and everyday life, eugenics resides in most people’s minds as a remnant of distant totalitarian history. This could not be further from the truth.
The recent cuts to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) represent some of the worst austerity cuts seen in decades. However, alongside these eugenicist austerity cuts, a troubling rhetoric has arisen once more in the contested political responses among the disabled community.
