Squires Gate Vs Cammell Laird 1907

MCCANN Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for our first home league fixture against Cammell Laird 1907. I welcome all from Laird and I wish you a safe journey home.

On paper, our results so far have been disappointing compared to the standards we set last season but all at the club are working hard to change our on field fortunes. The club has made very positive strides over the summer so it’s important that this is reflected in team results as well.

For some of us, it’s a case of less talking and more action This afternoon, we look to bounce back from our extra time defeat in the FA cup replay on Tuesday night. Barton Town Old Boys were a good side, just as their finishing position in their league last season suggested, but we were in good positions to win the game. We needed to take advantage of this but paid the price for not doing so. As a team we need to be more clinical in and around both boxes and I fell this been the case in the majority of games that we’ve played so far this season.

We will be looking to pick up our first points of the season today, a task that the players are more capable of doing so if they apply themselves correctly. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at see you at School Road again Up the Gate!!

Gate took a squad of 21 over to Fulwood including 8 new faces all looking to impress Dave McCann. McCann started with just one new face for the first half with the rest of the squad all featuring last season. Both teams started the game at a high tempo with both sides seeing plenty of the ball. It was midfielder Josh Kay who stood out for Gate. His runs of the left hand side often troubled Fulwood's defence.

Gate opened the scoring on 40 minutes. The ball was played out to Billy Mckenna on the right hand side whose cross into the box found Captain Danny Penswick in the box to tap the ball in. Gate made 5 changes at half time with all the back four and keeper being swapped. As the second half wore on substitutions slowed the game down and took the sting out of the game. The home side would make the scoreline level on 75 minutes from a set piece. The freekick was fired into the near post, the keeper had the shot covered but stumbled and dropped the ball. Unfortunately for Gate it was a Fulwood attacker who was quickest to the ball to poke in.

Gate would go ahead again just 5 minutes after when Clarke at his second attempt fired past the keeper easily. It would be Clarke again who would add his second and Gates third of the day. A long ball over the top from Keeper Powell found the run of Cummings, whose

The first chance for Gate fell to Josh Westwood after 10 minutes but his bullet header from the corner was well saved to deny the defender. Gate again burst forward soon after, this time it was defender Andrew Richards, forward from right back whose left footed shot cannoned back of the crossbar much to the disappointment of the crowd. A highlight of the first half from Gate was the constant pressing from every player on the pitch. Soon after the front three of Buchan, Mckenna and Mckendrick linked up again but the latter's shot was blocked at the last minute by an on rushing defender. And from the resulting corner Gate opened the scoring, the ball in from Ferguson, found captain Danny Penswick at the back post to put Gate ahead. Soon after Gate would double their lead, a good ball over from Anderson found Mckenna at the back post. The winger took a touch before beating his man and firing the ball into the opposite bottom corner of the net.

It would be sub Rowley who would make an impact first his shot was pushed wide by the goalkeeper before he was slipped in but was just caught offside. Gate could have added a third soon after Buchan was sent through over the top by Hall, the striker rounded the keeper but his shot was cleared by the onrushing defender. It would Buchan again involved whose ball through to sub Clarke, the sub dinked the ball over the onrushing keeper to make it 3-0. Buchan would grab himself a goal after being sent through by Anderson his clinical finish found the bottom corner to make it 4.

FULWOOD AMATEURS SQUIRES GATE

Gate have been in good form so far in pre season beating Fulwood Amateurs and Lostock St Gerrards scoring 11 goals and conceding just the 1 goal. The visit of Altrincham would be a tougher test though as they finished 17th in the National league and would possess a greater threat than the West Lancs sides.

Altrincham had the first chance after 10 minutes but the striker fired wide. Gate had the chance to open the scoring after 15 minutes, a free kick in from Anderson found the head of Westwood but his header cannoned back off the bar. Alex Mckendrick was on hand for the follow up but his shot dribbled wide of the post. It took until the 40th minute for Gate to take the lead. Captain Danny Penswick, scoring his third goal in three games, struck a beautiful free kick which nestled into the top corner of the net.

After the half time break Gate made the one change with Jake Higham coming on to replace Wes Benjamin in defence. Gate looked to attack from the off in the second half and almost scored a second, good work down the wing from Mckenna but his ball into Buchan at the near post was put wide. Danny Penswick had the chance to replicate his earlier freekick down the other end but this time the ball was blocked, this lead to a Altrincham counter but the striker fired wide. The best move of the game came soon after, lovely football from Gate which started at left back before Kay picked up the ball and sprayed a beautiful pass out to find Rowley on the right. WREN ROVERS SQUIRES GATE

Gate visited neighbours Wren Rovers on Saturday afternoon for their last pre season game before kicking off the season against 1874 Northwich away from home. Gate were without five first team regulars due to holidays and work commitments and fielded what on paper would be considered a weaker team.

Gate started the game in a bright fashion and retained a good spell of possession from the kick off. Josh Kay again impressed after doing so earlier in pre season and was the man to open the scoring for Gate. Kay picked up the ball on the right before driving forward and unleashing a daisy cutter which nestled into the bottom corner to give Gate the lead.

It would seem that the home side didn't learn from their mistakes as just ten minutes later Kay found the ball in the same area again. The same outcome followed but this time Kay struck the ball much sweeter with the ball hitting the top of the net. Gate finished the first half again seeing alot of possession and when loosing the ball, pressing Wrens and not allowing them time on the ball.

The second half started with Gate again playing with a high intensity not letting the home side have time on the ball. Both Mckenna and Penswick had the chance to further Gates lead but neither could find the target. From the resulting corner from Penswick's effort Gate would further their lead. The ball falling to Ash Rowley on the edge of the box he showed good vision and creativity to jink past his man and fine the back of the net to make it three for Gate.

Squires Gate kicked of their season away from home as they travelled to 1874 Northwich on the 2nd Saturday in August. Gate handed a debut to new signing Wes Benjamin at centre back with fellow new signings, Terry Cummings and Nathan Trout on the bench. Gate failed to win either of there games against 1874 last season loosing 1-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away from home.

It was the home side who made the brighter start to the game looking fitter and more willing to get to the ball first. Squires Gate seemed to struggle with the ball and didn't utilise it when in possession. It was the home side who hade first real chance of the game, new signing Aiden Haughton fired towards goal but Ben Fletcher got over well to save.

The home side opened the scoring after 35 minutes when defender Danny Thomas rose highest to head home from the corner. Gate seemed to struggle to really get going throughout the first half and seemed lazy in there passes and pressing on the ball. The home side made this even more clear on 41 minutes when Haughton scored to put them 2-0 up.

The second half saw a more recognisable Gate side, full of enthusiasm and bite, all looking motivated and all wanting to win the ball and play football. The lively Josh Kay again burst forward from midfield for Gate but after beating 3 players his shot was easily saved. Gates best chance of the game came when Mark Buchan lay the ball of to Billy McKenna on the edge of the box but his shot was fired over the box.

The home side could have made it three late on in the game but sub Mike Brandon miss kicked the square ball much to the surprise of the home crowd. Gate pushed late on but chances from Subs Cummings whose chip fell wide of the post and Trout whose clever backwards header fell straight into the arms of the keeper.

Gate made just the one change from Saturday's defeat with Alex Mckendrick coming in for Brett Ferguson who dropped to the bench. Gate made a solid start to the game much like how they ended the second half on Saturday. Captain Danny Penswick had Gates first chance, but his run forward from midfield was saved well. Mckendrick on his first start of the season was next with a chance but after Mark Buchan layed the ball off on the edge of the box Mckendricks shot was blocked. The opening half hour was full of chances for Gate with Wes Benjamin next but his header was over the bar from the freekick.

A scramble in the box insued with chances falling to McKenna and Mckendrick but again neither really tested the keeper. The final chance of the first half was to the home side and unfortunately for Gate they scored it. Fletcher beat at the near post by striker Ryan Cox. It was the only real chance the home side had with Fletcher not really tested. Gates heads seemed to drop at the start of the second half, the goal probably coming at the right time for the home side. The home side seemed happy to see the game out and take the 1-0 win. Although a good sign for Gate is that they didn't give up. They kept probing and attacking the home side looking for an equaliser.

They introduction of Trout and Cummings gave Gate a new style and in going direct created more chances for themselves. Josh Kay had the chance to equalise after a lovely ball behind the striker from Danny Penswick but Kay's first time shot was saved well by the goalkeeper. Ben Fletcher saved well to give Gate a fighting hope late on but Gate just couldn't find that killer instinct to score the goal

Nickname: “The Lairds”, “The Camels”, “The Shipyarders” Founded: 1907 Ground: North West Construction Stadium, formerly Kirklands Stadium

In the early years the club played at a number of grounds before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road there current home as Kirklands FC. Having disbanded in 1939 the club reformed in 1946. Having won their first trophy (Shipley Cup) in April 1921, the club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase.

The early part of the millennium saw the club reach new heights. In 2005/6 the club reached the FA Vase semi final and started the rise through the non leagues making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League. In 2007/8 the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League, however the following season saw relegation due to ground grading.

In the 2009/10 season, Lairds were back in the Northern Premier League Division 1 South and finished 16th. In the 2010/11 season, Lairds were transferred to the Northern Premier League Division 1 North to satisfy the restructuring process.

Lairds finished 19th but survived the drop. After battling the drop successfully the previous seasons, Cammell Laird finished bottom in the 2010/11 season after what was a very testing season with a lack of funds and a depleted squad. However, Durham City’s request to leave the league coupled with the ground grading failure for Woodley Sports, meant that Laird were reprieved and played in the Northern Premier League for the 2012/13 season.

Manager Tony Sullivan was awarded his first managerial accolade in January 2013, when he was named manager of the month, after a fine run of results during that month. Wins over NPL sides Marine and Chorley away in the cup helped win the award and set up a Doodson Sport Cup Quarter final tie against Northwich Victoria.

2013/14 saw the club finish 11th, however the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL league due to ownership issues and form a new club Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.

CAMMELL LAIRD 1907

Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, before finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League (1907/8 season).

Mike Langley - Goalkeeper This big goalkeeper is always by far the most vocal player of the Laird’s team, and demands the best from his back four. Before arriving at Cammell Laird, he had a handful of experience in this division, playing for Winsford United, Alsager Town and Congleton Town as well as Colwyn Bay and Prescot. He commands his area well, and is known as an excellent shot stopper.

Tom Hartley - Defender A versatile defender who can play left back or centre back. Hartley combines the ability to get forward with real tackling prowess. He ensured that the impact of the departure of Franny Foy (an important player in the first half of last season) was minimised as he stepped effortlessly into the left back position.

Joe Gibiluru - Midfielder

The club captain who has also appeared for Prescot and St Helens. He always gives 100% and demands that from everyone else. He helps things tick over in the middle, and can play as a deep lying defensive midfielder or further up the field. He’s an inspirational player who chipped in with his fair share of goals last season, and ended the season with a respectable tally of six goals.

Dylan Vassallo - Midfielder A talented, young midfielder, who can play in the middle of the park or out on the left wing. He has an excellent passing range, and has a trick or two that always seems to help him find his way to the byline.

Danny Dixon - Striker A man who ended last season as the reserve’s top scorer, with 19 goals. Dixon has already made an appearance from the bench this season, and could be one to watch.

Jay Clare - Striker Another player from the reserves. Jay was the star of the reserve side that was 2nd in the West Cheshire League last season and won the Pyke Cup, which culminated in him winning their player of the season award. A man who can create something out of nothing, having scored 15 goals last season, which was enough to convince Paul McNally to start him in the first two opening fixtures.

ONES TO WATCH

The new club was formed in May 2014, and entered the NWCFL Division One. In October, the club lost manager Tony Sullivan to Witton Albion and appointed Paul McNally in the same month. He guided the team to promotion in April 2015, a year after the club was formed. Cammell Laird finished 21 points clear o 3rd placed AFC Darwen. Here are a pick of the ones to watch:

BARTON TOWN OLD BOYS

Squires Gate went all the way to extra time on Tuesday night as they faced Barton Town Old Boys in there cup replay. Gate made the one change from Saturday with Cummings making his debut to replace Mckendrick who dropped to the bench.

Gate didn't make the best of starts and found themselves 2-0 down at half time. Although Gate had the better chance but just couldn't find a way through. Barton opened the scoring with a fluke of a goal the wingers cross finding the top corner. Barton’s second came from sloppy defending at the corner and the finish was simple to beat Fletcher.

Gate got a goal back on there first attack Cummings driving into the box and being fouled. Mark Buchan stepped up to score the resulting penalty. Billy McKenna almost levelled the game soon after when his shot almost caught the keeper out at his near post but he saved. Both Anderson and Penswick went close from corners as Gate piled on the pressure but neither could capitalise.

Chances followed for Kay and McKenna but again neither could find the magic touch. Gate made the choice to move McKenna into the middle and it proved the right one as he struck the ball from the edge of the box past the keeper to put Gate level.

So extra time it would be for the two teams. Gate conceded 10 minutes into extra time as a ball over the top caught them out and the striker finished well.

Bartons second of extra time came on the break as Anderson was left one on one he was out paced and the striker was able to put the game out of doubt and make it 4 for the visitors.

As much as Gate tried last on they just couldn't break the visitors down and they saw the victory out to go through to the next round to face Droylsden.

“I first started coming to watch Squires Gate four years ago after struggling to get to Blackpool FC away games, and I was instantly hooked by the club. I was greeted on the turnstile and shown where to go. When in the clubhouse, everyone again was welcoming and polite, unlike other non league clubs that I had visited in the past.

I came back again and decided to film the match highlights as part of my college course. The next time I came back I was then asked to write a match report for the game. This is something I’ve done ever since and it is now sent off to Blackpool Gazette and it is uploaded to our website (www.pitchero/squiresgatefc.co.uk).

Recently I’ve taken on more to my role with Steve McLellan leaving the club. I’ve taken over the website, Twitter and Facebook. Since being at the club I’ve also collected money on the turnstile, taken money on the raffle, taken pictures and served coffee in the boardroom. I’ve also helped out painting walls, been stand in secretary, I’ve run after footballs and interviewed players.

It is a great experience, and throughout my time volunteering at Squires Gate I have gained skills and made friends that I wouldn’t have done had I not come down here. This week we caught up with Squires Gates’ media manager and Blackpool fan Mark Ashmore, and he gave his views on volunteering in non league football and how he got into helping out at Squires Gate.
