It is with the deepest sorrow that the family of Michael Squire and all here at Squire & Partners announce that Michael died on Thursday May 4, 2023, following a short illness. We are all in shock and still absorbing the loss of an extraordinary man, who touched the lives of so many around the world through his work as an architect and his warm and generous personality.
Michael James Squire was born on May 3, 1946 to Raglan and Raye Squire, and was the grandson of poet Sir John Squire, founder of the Architecture Club. Michael studied architecture at St John’s College, Cambridge, under the tutelage of Sir Leslie Martin and Sir Colin St John Wilson.
In 1976, following a period working with his father on projects in Jakarta and Bahrain, he established Michael Squire Associates with Paul Harrison, which evolved into Squire & Partners, now led by his son Henry, and fellow partners Tim Gledstone and Murray Levinson.
Under Michael’s direction, we became one of the UK’s most respected architecture practices, winning a significant number of design awards, and establishing a reputation for beautiful, crafted buildings in sensitive urban locations including: Chelsea Barracks, One Tower Bridge, Brook House, Southbank Place and Clarges Estate.
Michael was a leading figure in British architecture, creating some of London’s most important buildings, serving as Jury Chair for the RIBA Awards and as a member of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea’s Architecture Appraisal Panel. He was a passionate third generation member of the Architecture Club, and contributed to industry events at the RIBA, New London Architecture and Open City.
His fearless entrepreneurial spirit and sense of adventure led us from South Kensington to King’s Cross and finally to the purchase of a dilapidated Edwardian department store in Brixton. Its stunning transformation into The Department Store and The Department Store Studios not only provided a new home for the practice, but also actively engaged with the local community through the Upstairs members club, the Downstairs events space, the Winter Windows displays and a residency at The Studios, to name a few. It has won multiple awards both nationally and internationally, set a new benchmark for adaptive re-use of old buildings and is a manifestation of Michael’s generous and inclusive nature.
Outside of architecture, Michael was first and foremost a family man who loved nothing more than being surrounded by his wife and children, to whom he devoted so much love and time. He also enjoyed sailing on the Solent and was an avid Chelsea fan. His youthful energy, love of life and mischievous humour will be hugely missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Rosy; his children Henry, George, Richard, Charles and Miranda; his first wife Pansy; his brother Roger and his seven grandchildren, Ottilie, Felix, Oscar, Alfie, Isabel, James and Sienna.
We will miss him more than words can express, but are determined to build on what he started and to stand tall on the shoulders of a giant.
Henry, Tim, Murray – His family and all at Squire & Partners.
“No one would have crossed the ocean if they could have got off the ship in a storm.” Charles Kettering
Sailing in calm waters with a gentle breeze is an easy and pleasant task. In a storm everyone is violently thrown about and must pull together to pass through it. On the other side the surviving crew emerge bonded in a more profound way; they have faced the ultimate questions and answered them.
It has been a stormy year in the macro and micro world of Squire & Partners. A terrible war in Europe that is devastating an entire generation on both sides of the conflict has had far reaching implications for the entire world. The political situation at home has been risible and embarrassing for many years, culminating in the madness of last September/October. The politics around many subjects in the planning and development process have become so polarised and evangelical that intelligent discourse and action is often excluded and the system had practically ground to a halt. Add to this interest rates rising from historic lows to more normal levels seen 20 years ago and it is fair to say it has been a tough beat.
Just as we thought the storm was passing it claimed the life of our captain. To move away from the sailing analogy and onto Chelsea, Michael’s other great passion, Michael was our Captain, Leader, Legend. That is probably where the comparisons with John Terry end! He will never be forgotten and will be remembered for his talent, creativity, humility, sense of humour and adventure, approachability, determination, love for all things S&P, but also as a friend and dad, never really a boss. We will miss him so much but are determined to handle Squire & Partners carefully, to take the practice to new heights and to make him proud.
We also said goodbye in a different way to many long-standing members of the S&P family this year, which has been sad for all involved. We love them all and thank them for all the incredible talent, dedication and spirit they brought to the practice. They will always be welcome here at The Department Store.
Despite these challenges, we continue to deliver some exceptional projects of which we are incredibly proud:
• The Squire, Albany Marina – Bahamas. A new apartment building celebrating contemporary design and living in a way that we are often restricted from exploring in London. It is our first built project on the other side of the Atlantic and we are exploring further opportunities in the area.
• The Broadway – Victoria Street: A monumental mixed-use project for Northacre, which is already winning design awards and surprising people.
• Landmark Pinnacle – Canary Wharf: Currently the UK’s tallest residential building. Over 1 million sq ft and nearly 1,000 apartments were delivered on time and on budget for Chalegrove. There are some fantastic amenity floors, creating communities in the sky, where we hope to host dinners for clients this year.Luma – King’s Cross: A state-of-the-art apartment building forming part of the rich tapestry that is Argent’s King’s Cross masterplan.
• Luma – King’s Cross: A state-of-the-art apartment building forming part of the rich tapestry that is Argent’s King’s Cross masterplan. One St John’s Wood: Our first project for Regal Homes opposite Lord’s Cricket Ground. A majestic new apartment building setting new standards for living.
• 78 St James’s Street – Westminster: The second time we have reimagined this building, the first being for HSBC Private
Banking twenty years ago. This time, for BentallGreenOak, we have transformed the Grade II*-listed heritage building into an exclusive club for tenants, providing incredible amenity spaces to the more functional workspace. The project reflects the changing way in which people want to work and what they want an office to be.
• One St John’s Wood: Our first project for Regal Homes opposite Lord’s Cricket Ground. A majestic new apartment building setting new standards for living.
• Slough Central Masterplan: An outline consent of circa 1.5 million sq ft was achieved for British Land and AIDA on the Queensmere Shopping Centre site in the heart of Slough.
• West End Gate – Edgware Road: A rich complex of apartment buildings for Berkley Homes. featuring a tower building that draws reference from the art deco world and carefully considers façade design as part of its sustainability package.
We have many projects on site which will begin to appear this year. Many of them are refurbishments of workspace buildings in collaboration with our Interior Design department. It is obvious that – where possible – repurposing and refurbishing is better than demolition. Carbon reduction is a key consideration but equally time is so important to projects, especially with the increase in construction costs and interest rates. These include:
• Devonshire Square – City of London: Repurposing and reinventing a series of buildings and public realm for Nuveen.
• Space House – Covent Garden: Reimagining the modernist masterpiece. Incredible commitment has been shown by our client, Seaforth Land, and the team to sensitively but ambitiously refurbish and extend the Grade II-listed building, whilst celebrating and enhancing its modernist heritage.
• 60 Sloane Avenue – South Kensington: Refurbishment of the former Harrods depository into a modern office complex for CIT and Bain.
• Fitzroy Street – Fitzrovia. Refurbishment of Arup’s old HQ building into an exciting new office building for the 21st century, still employing some of the original structure’s innovative systems.
Looking forward, we have many enquiries for projects both here and, importantly, internationally. We are excited to be expanding our portfolio of work in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and further afield to the Far East and the Americas. Learning from other cultures enriches our overall experience as designers and allows us to celebrate the huge diversity that is the human experience.
We are excited for the future. We have a fantastic team here in the office with a healthy mixture of experience and youthful talent and energy. We are looking forward to bringing that youthful talent into the upper management positions of the firm to push us forward and to ensure we are designing buildings of the future for future thinkers, and not simply resting on the successes of the past. We love what we do, and are passionate about all elements of design. We think differently and do not always follow conventional dogma. That’s our USP, it was very much part of Michael’s character, and we enjoy that aspect.
As we return to port, the storm is passing in the west and the sun is rising in the east, bringing a new dawn.
Henry, Tim and Murray
Michael – Forever in our hearts and minds.

Brixton x Harlem Twinning
Brixton BID and Harlem’s 125th Street Business Improvement District started a first of its kind twinning. Brought together through their shared place values, rich histories and diverse communities, together they want to celebrate, learn and forge new relationships between both the businesses and the people. As members of the BID, Squire & Partners were invited to Harlem and took part in the twinning festival in August.
Greenshoots Partnership
As part of our ongoing partnership with Greeshoots Foundation, we hosted a UCL Volunteering Consultancy Challenge which challenged the group to create a compostable sanitary pad prototype, to supplement menstrual health and hygiene education in Cambodia.
Sample Project
We are supporting Sophie Halliday’s Sample Project. Sophie sources discontinued material samples from suppliers and designers and re-distributes them in packs to primary schools in need of continuous provision, to support children’s openended play. As Sophie pointed out, “One industry’s trash is another industry’s treasure!”
We were delighted to make the (playable!) trophy for the Brixton Bugle Summer Art Show for the third year running. Tim Gledstone presented the gong to winner Loretta Yussuff at the closing ceremony.
WeRise x Squire & Partners
As part of our ongoing support of WeRise, we showed a group of students around The Department Store to demonstrate the various job opportunities that exist in the built environment.
For our sixth annual Winter Windows installation, half of the window illuminations were designed by Jubilee Primary School in Brixton and the other half by Harlem-based Living Redemption Youth Opportunity Hub in celebration of Brixton and Harlem’s twinning.
