‘The lunatic is on the grass, remembering games and daisy chains and laughs’ Roger Waters
More than ever it feels important to be discussing the need to rebel, to ignore the ‘keep off the grass’ signs. If we want to build more homes, reduce pollution, combat climate change and design better cities for a fast changing world, then we need to challenge the rules and be bold. The increasing politicising of design and planning, along with weighty beaurocracy and legislation, has led to huge frustrations with the process, resulting in less getting built, not more. It’s great to see the next generation demanding more in the way of humanising their workplace, public realm, homes and so many areas of what make great places and cities, and there’s no doubt that this demand has led to some exciting new developments in design.
We are now a year on from our move to Brixton, and have really enjoyed working and communicating both internally and externally through The Department Store. This building represents the approach we try to take with every project we do: respect context and history, communicate with and include local people, provide active and permeable street frontage, collaborate, innovate, be adventurous, be playful, be contemporary and include well thought out public realm.
The Department Store has achieved recognition with our peers, winning an RIBA National Award, Blueprint award and AJ Retrofit Award and has also been featured as an exemplar development in the Monocle Guide to Building Better Cities. Multi-purpose spaces in the building have allowed the practice to increase its communication with the outside world through a large events programme, hosting talks and exhibitions exploring themes of collaborative art and making, as well as workshops with local schools and members of the community.
As a practice we continue to grow both in architect numbers and disciplines. This year saw the launch of a collaboration with graphic designers Mammal. Mammal are an award winning creative agency with whom we have worked for several years. Their 13 years of experience delivering brand strategy, campaigns and multi-platform design for both property and consumer clients enables us to offer clients an even deeper understanding of their projects and to develop the brand with the architecture, rather than as an afterthought.
The workplace revolution is fully underway and this year has seen us complete a number of exciting workspaces for clients across London including: The Ministry in Borough, The Frames in Shoreditch and 6 Warwick St in Soho. The Rolling Stock Yard development in Kings Cross began on site and will be complete in Q1 2020.
The coming year will see the completion of some large scale residential and mixed use developments including: Chelsea Barracks, Southbank Place, 20 Grosvenor Square and One Palace Street. Other notable projects on site include: The Broadway, Landmark Pinnacle and three office refurbishment projects on Notting Hill Gate. We are particularly excited about the completion of our first large scale affordable housing scheme at Island Point which will deliver 125 new homes on the southern end of the Isle of Dogs.
Our UK portfolio is reaching beyond London to Manchester, Harrogate, Birmingham and Dublin, and we continue to grow our international projects with current commissions in St Petersburg, Budapest, Karachi, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, the Bahamas and the USA.
Design is only a part of what brings about change but it can help and we all need to speak up, many voices are more powerful than one.
As far as we are concerned the lunatics are on the path, we hope to see you soon, on the grass for daisy chains and laughs.
