Squire & Partners Annual 2018

Page 1

‘I am convinced that a good building must be capable of absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness... I think of the patina of age on materials, of innumerable small scratches on surfaces, of varnish that has grown dull and brittle, and of edges polished by use.’

2017 sees us move into The Department Store, our new offices in Brixton. Built in 1906 during Brixton’s golden era, as an extension to the Bon Marche department store, the building fell into disrepair and then decay over the later part of the 20th century. We had been looking for new premises for some time before we came to The Department Store, and from the moment we walked through the doors we knew we had found something very special. The building is like a palimpsest with layers of paint colours, materials and textures revealing its history from grand days as a department store, through to office use and then as a squatters paradise where late night illegal raves were held in the early noughties. For us The Department Store presents an opportunity to showcase our architectural mantra of ‘contemporary crafted architecture in context’. We have allowed the building to define what it wants to be, revealing its full history of use and misuse, and have placed our new layer on top. In time we will pass leaving our own traces, but the original spirit will continue. We worked with over fifty different artisans, makers and sub-contractors to realise the project - collaborations are key to everything we do and the building would be far less successful without them, so a big thank you to all internal and external creatives who have worked with us.

Some significant projects are completing this year including: Clarges Estate on Piccadilly, One Tower Bridge in Southwark, 77 Mayfair, Kingwood and Yeoman’s Row in Knightsbridge, The Harley Building in Fitzrovia and The Studio in Victoria. Our designs seek to grow each building organically out of its site, meaning that projects vary greatly in style and materiality to reflect the particular context and history of the site they occupy, but display an approach and rigour of detailing that unifies them as Squire and Partners projects.

Other projects on the boards or in the ground at the moment include: Chelsea Barracks, Landmark Pinnacle in Canary Wharf, Southbank Place in Waterloo, The Broadway and One Palace Street in Victoria, St Johns Wood Square, The Stag Brewery in Mortlake, Lancer Square, The Frames in Shoreditch, The Landmark in Manchester, Island Point affordable housing development on the Isle of Dogs and a refurbishment project for the Notting Hill Gate Estate.

Internationally, Musheireb Heart of Doha is nearing completion and is looking fantastic. Collaborating with a number of British and American architects has been a great experiencearchitects and clients should do more of this. We believe the project will set a new benchmark for international urban development and masterplanning, and are very proud to have played a small part in the big picture with six Squire and Partners designed buildings nearing completion. We also have a residential development on site in St Petersburg, Russia, and continue to build our international portfolio with projects in Dubai, Oman, Cairo and Karachi.

Moving to Brixton has allowed us to engage with a vibrant local creative community - we have been actively involved in establishing Brixton Design Trail, one of seven Design Districts for the London Design Festival, and have created a Downstairs event space as a resource to host community and industry events. We have supported Friends of Brixton Windmill in collaboration with Lambeth Council to develop an education and community centre to aid the work of the Grade II* windmill. We are also supporting the work of Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice by designing a new facility in Barnet, and delivered Computer Aid’s first Zubabox project in Bogota, Columbia, repurposing a redundant shipping container to offer young people opportunities for education and developing digital skills.

London is a fantastic city to live and work in, and despite the current political uncertainty we remain positive about London’s future and the future for British designers and artists both at home and globally.

We hope you enjoy the snapshots of what we are currently involved in, and we look forward to welcoming you to our rooftop bar and restaurant where we can scratch the surface and polish the edge.

Sincerely

Michael,
