Impact Report 2021-2022

Dear SQB Community,

There was no better sight this year than our students’ smiling faces in person, taking in everything SquashBusters has to offer. Our courts were full, and our classrooms were buzzing with excitement. The pandemic has taken its toll on all of us, but the nonstop laughter, joy, camaraderie, and love that once more echo through our facilities have been a perfect antidote.

After more than two years of the ups and downs of COVID, we knew that our students were craving opportunities to be together in person sharing their experiences face to face, and working hard as a team. SQB staff supported students and their families to get all our students vaccinated so they could return to in-person programming. We increased the number of weekly practices to give our students more opportunities to be together and rebuild the relationships impacted by the shift to virtual programming.

We also focused on uniting Boston, Lawrence and Providence by providing more cross-site opportunities. We hosted multiple in-house SQB tournaments and used the winter and summer breaks to train together in Boston and Providence. A highlight was the return of the Squash and Education Alliance (SEA) Team Nationals and Individuals at the Specter Center in Philadelphia. More than 100 students supported each other as they competed against other SEA program teams.

We wrapped up the year by providing students with summer opportunities in our area and worldwide! All three SQB sites sent students internationally to train in Dublin and compete in the Dutch Open in Amsterdam.

This year, SQB’s 27th, will be a SquashBusters first; all three site leaders are SquashBusters alumni. To see program graduates come full circle has been a long-time dream of Greg’s, and we are proud of this achievement, especially as Greg prepares for his retirement. We each returned to SquashBusters, eager to give back to the program that gave so much to us, and we are proud to set the example and take the lead. We are deeply grateful for and humbled by this opportunity and are honored to be entrusted to take SquashBusters to new heights, continuing the work Greg started 27 years ago, and changing the trajectory of our students’ lives, just as SQB did for us.

Johanny Jimenez

Scan here for more of Jhanny’s story.

SQB

Lawrence ’22 MIT ’26

This fall, Jhanny Jimenez accomplished a SquashBusters first. In September, he became the first SQB student to enroll at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a full scholarship, an incredible accomplishment for someone who moved to the United States at ten years old, speaking almost no English. And while Jhanny knows he deserves the lion’s share of the credit for this accomplishment, he also recognizes that SQB played a significant role in helping him get there.

“I’ve basically grown up at SquashBusters. I’ve been in the program since the sixth grade. It’s been fun, and I’ve loved the squash and the competition, but more than that, it really is like a second family. Everyone here is so supportive, encouraging, and important to me, and I feel like I have a whole team in my corner. My Dad didn’t go to high school, so when it came time to apply to high school, and even more so to college, I couldn’t have done it without SQB.”

Jhanny knows that the lessons he learned at SquashBusters will serve him well. “Everyone at SQB, my teammates, my coaches, the other staff, pushed me to be better. Better at squash, better at school, better at demonstrating the ICARE values (Integrity, Concern for Others, Appreciation, Respect and Effort). These stick with you and translate to other parts of life. You want to strive to be your best and keep trying. I know when I go to college, I’m not leaving SQB. I will still have them in my corner, and just around the corner!”

SquashBusters has helped Jhanny a lot. He used to be very quiet and didn’t like spending much time with us. But the program helped push him, and now he spends more time with his friends and us. He has started to open up more. SQB has also helped him academically, and he is beginning to excel at many things.

Julissa Morales

Jhanny brings a lot of positivity the team, whether in academics or on the squash courts. When you need that boost of sunshine, he’s always there. He has great jokes, and his presence, in general, is uplifting. Without Jhanny on the team, it would feel a little lonely. He brings so much to the group!

John Whelan

Mentor

Junior Achievement

Jhanny is such a natural leader with a innate, entrepreneurial mindset. Students can be intimidated by the Junior Achievement process, especially in the beginning, but Jhanny stepped right up, even when it was difficult or meant more work. He is a highly motivated self-starter, and you can tell that he relied on SquashBusters to keep him on track and moving forward.

Andrés Burbank-Crump

SQB Lawrence, Head of Planning and Innovation

As a student and an athlete, Jhanny constantly looks for challenges and opportunities to grow. This mindset has helped him take full advantage of all SquashBusters has to offer while also elevating the standards of those around him. He has developed into an indispensable leader on the Lawrence team, and we can’t wait to see where his persistence and drive take him in the future.

Yvonne Dunkley

SQB Boston ’18 Babson College ’22 Westfield Capital Management, Compliance Associate

authentic and honest, and she’s the bravest person I know. That’s rubbed off on me. I thank SquashBusters for the joy, health, and sense of purpose it has brought Yvonne — often at difficult times in her life. Look at my cousin now! She’s soaring with a degree from Babson, a fantastic job in finance.

When she’s asked to explain how much SquashBusters means to her, Yvonne’s response is filled with emotion. “The first thought that comes to mind for me is family. That is what SQB has been for me since I walked through those doors as a 7th grader. For six straight years, day after day, SQB guided, encouraged, and challenged me, and made me feel loved and appreciated. All of this set me on a course to be successful in life.”

She attributes a lot of who she is today to her experience at SQB. “SquashBusters and Myra gave me passion and direction. When I first joined, I was kind of lost and confused. But knowing that SQB would be there for me every day was life-affirming. I began to use SQB as a place to improve my health and performance. My self-confidence and sense of purpose and direction grew steadily.”

Ten years after she started SquashBusters, Yvonne is now a proud graduate of Babson College, where she majored in Entrepreneurship. The path was not easy, but she credits all she learned at SQB for her tireless work ethic and dedication. “I paid the bills working overnight security at New Balance and Logan Airport for four years. I juggled it all with less than 8 hours of sleep every night. I’m proud of myself and excited about my future,” she says.

Throughout our time at Babson, Yvonne was a role model for me. She always determination. She conducts herself always with such grace and humility. Lots of this, I believe, came from her time at SQB. That inspires me, both as a proud SQB alum and as her very close friend and someone who deeply believes in Yvonne.

Yvonne now works as a Compliance Associate at Westfield Capital, where she teams up with SquashBusters Board Member Will Muggia. She says, “Westfield Capital has given me an amazing opportunity to launch my career. I plan to work very hard and one day become a leader in finance or start my own hair care business.

Rashad Brown-Mitchell

SQB Boston ’20 Dartmouth College ’24

Curiosity and the promise of friendship drew Rashad to SquashBusters as a 7th grader. As soon as he joined the program, he knew his interest had paid off. He found a community that challenged and supported him and helped shape his future.

Having the chance to spend more time with his friends initially kept Rashad coming back to SQB, but towards the end of middle school, traveling to tournaments and doing summer training sessions with Greg drove him to become more committed to squash. In high school, the sport became his passion. Rashad’s teammates, coaches, and academic staff inspired him to try harder and improve on and off the court. Seeing the commitment and effort of older students in the program got him to practice more often, and a light-hearted challenge from then program coordinator Eileen, along with promise of a new SQB t-shirt if he got straight A’s, transformed his report card. SQB unknowingly helped spark a connection between Dartmouth and Rashad when they sent him off to the squash camp his sophomore year. The following year, support and encouragement from SQB’s academic team brought him to Dartmouth Bound — a diversity weekend that introduced Rashad to his eventual college of choice, Dartmouth College, where he is currently thriving.

Looking back at his time at SquashBusters, Rashad highlights the ICARE values of integrity, concern for others, and effort as characteristics he absorbed at SQB and still carries with him today. Having integrity ingrained in his mind before stepping on the Dartmouth campus has helped him do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Putting in a strong effort on and off the court at SquashBusters has compelled him to put forth his best effort in all of his ranging commitments, regardless of the results. And the concern for others instilled in him through the SQB community service projects has guided him to his college major, inspiring Rashad to enter the world of engineering and human-centered design.

“SquashBusters is one of a kind,” he says. “The environment, the staff, and the culture are not typical of other places or programs. It’s hard to put into words, but it’s unusual. I haven’t found anything like it anywhere else.”

humility. commitment. discipline. motivation.

Robin Cohen Faculty Fenway High School

I will always admire Rashad for not wanting to upstage his friend, who had a big scholarship interview the day Rashad would hear if he was accepted to Dartmouth. Rashad told no one so that his friend could have the spotlight and be celebrated. It wasn’t until someone asked him if he’d heard from Dartmouth, that with quiet humility Rashad shared that he had been accepted.

Rashad is a leader whose example of loyalty, discipline and integrity encourages others to pursue those traits in greater measure. I know he credits SquashBusters with helping to nurture those qualities. He’s a servant-hearted leader and a faithful and steady presence in every situation he finds himself in.

Rashad is a true professional. It’s refreshing to know someone as level-headed as he is. He remains committed to a balanced mind and body throughout his day.

Rashad and I grew up together at SQB, and he has been an inspiration to me. When he steps on the court, it’s not just to play; it’s always to improve. I learned that from him, which motivated me to be a better player, eventually leading me to play Varsity Squash at Wesleyan University. I’m so grateful to SQB for what I know will be a lifelong friendship.

Maisha Moses

Executive Director

Young People’s Project

Vicky and I developed a wonderful relationship during her time at the Young People’s Project (YPP). She is an incredibly hard worker with impeccable integrity and very high standards. Vicky knew what a high-functioning program should look like from her time at SquashBusters, and she brought that to YPP.

Greg Zaff and Sonja Cantú

Vicky is a second daughter to us and a role model to our first. Our relationship fills us with more joy than we can possibly put into words. Vicky is one of the kindest human beings we know. She is also courageous, smart, humble, and incredibly hard-working.

I started SquashBusters in sixth grade, and Vicky was on the high school team. From day one, she took good care of me. She’s always believed in me and kept me going. We talk about character at SquashBusters, and Vicky is 100% the embodiment of that.

Kat Flamenco

Sister SQB helped Vicky find her passion in life, and I see her using her own experiences to encourage her students and help them overcome roadblocks that she faced in the past. She has credibility with the kids because she’s been through the program herself. She’s living proof of how SQB can work.

integrity. joy. belief. encouragement.

Vicky Flamenco

Bunker Hill Community College ’15

Vicky has been around SquashBusters almost as long as SquashBusters has been around. A member of the third team of SQB students, Vicky joined in 1999 as a sixth grader. Fast-forward twenty-three years and she is now the Program Director for SquashBusters Lawrence. Vicky acknowledges that a lot has changed along the way, but what has remained consistent is the care, opportunity, support, and love that SQB has provided her.

As an energetic middle-schooler, Vicky took advantage of all SQB had to offer, and when 8th grade graduation came around, she and her teammates were not ready to leave. They stayed as volunteers year after year, relishing the friendships, leadership opportunities, and new experiences, leading to the beginnings of the first high school team.

After high school, Vicky decided to take a gap year to work and later enrolled into Bunker Hill Community College. She stayed connected to CEO Greg Zaff and volunteered at SquashBusters whenever she had the opportunity. “My relationship with Greg stayed constant after I graduated high school. Greg and his wife Sonja coached and mentored me along my journey in finishing school.

They provided different insight from my parents, who came to the United States to work and build a better life for my siblings and me. My parents wanted us to be financially stable and Greg and Sonja helped me achieve that but guided me in finding what I was passionate about, and doing something I was going to be excited to wake up every morning to do.”

Ultimately, Vicky went on to work at The Young People’s Project as Program Coordinator working with students in grades 3rd-12th . Through her experiences, Vicky realized working with the youth was her passion. She would often talk to Greg about working for SquashBusters, and Greg would always reply, “When you finish school, come talk to me.” True to his word, Greg reached out to Vicky to join the staff when she graduated in 2015. In the spring of 2022, she was promoted to Program Director. “SquashBusters shaped so much of who I am and what my passions are. It is truly my second family, and I’m so grateful to be able to provide the same for my students now.”

Elyana Gonzalez

SQB Providence ’26

When Elyana’s sister Kairiana (SQB ’24) came home talking excitedly about her SquashBusters experience, Elyana knew it was something special. Between the squash matches, the fun field trips, and the new friendships, SQB sounded like a place Elyana wanted to be when she got to 6th grade. When the time came, she tried out and made the team and would soon learn first-hand that SQB was everything she hoped it would be and more!

In her short time as a SquashBusters student, Elyana has felt the wide-ranging impact of the organization. She credits the program with helping her meet her closest friends and allowing her to come out of her shell. At the beginning of the program, Elyana recalls that she felt a bit shy. She was quiet and usually kept to herself. Still, as she made her way through middle school, the small group setting at SQB allowed Elyana to get to know her teammates better and talk to people she had not spoken with before. It boosted her confidence and led to one of her favorite memories. “One day during lunch at school, I didn’t have anyone to sit with. I looked around and saw that Michelle, a teammate from SQB, was sitting alone, so I went over and sat with her. We talked about being part of SquashBusters and have been super close friends ever since.”

Elyana is grateful for the ongoing support she gets from her SquashBusters teammates and staff, and she knows that it’s a community that can get her through anything, from a tough match to improving in school. She says, “I see so much potential for all I can do with such a supportive team behind me.”

Nina Talbot

Program Coordinator, Squash SQB Providence

Elyana works hard and is one of the best players in her grade, but she is also a remarkable young woman off the court. She is kind and thoughtful and supportive. I am always impressed with her sportsmanship and her ability to learn from setbacks.

It took a little while to get to know Elyana because she was reserved at first, but she always brings positive energy to our group. She constantly pushes us to be better on the squash court and academically. Elyana leads by example because when she makes up her mind to do better, she does it. We know that SQB helps her to be confident and gives her a space to be herself.

Kairiana Gonzalez Sister SQB Providence ’24

I know first-hand how great SquashBusters is. They give Elyana and me so many excellent opportunities People show us care and love and always ensure we’re on track. They are like our second family!

Melienia and Edwin Gonzalez

Elyana’s face always lights up when she is on the squash courts. She has become so passionate about the sport. She has always had a heart of gold, but she used to be very shy. Through SquashBusters she has become more outgoing, and she socializes and talks with everyone. And, her grades have improved dramatically. The fact that a whole community supports our daughters means so much to us. We know that with SQB there will always be people who have their backs.

Thanks to our supporters, SquashBusters has maintained a position of financial strength throughout the fiscal year, both on an operating level and in the capital campaign for our future home in Lawrence. We are grateful for the successful return of our in-person fundraising events that are the bedrock of our organization. The generosity of our donors, plus continued support from federal COVID relief funds, helped us end the year in solid financial condition.

Here are a few notes to keep in mind as you review our progress this year:

• All numbers come from SquashBusters’ audited financial statements which were approved by the board in September 2022.

• Per FASB rules for non-profits, top-line revenue includes donations, endowment gifts and the full value of any multi-year pledges made in this fiscal year.

• Per FASB guidance, the proceeds of our Employee Retention Tax Credit were recognized as FY22 revenue since the conditions for receiving the credit were met prior to the end of the year.

• The SQB board approved a one-time settlement with Merrimack College that paved the way for us to site our future Lawrence home within the city boundaries of Lawrence instead of on Merrimack College’s North Andover campus as had been previously explored. The increase in functional expenses relates to this decision.

• Program Services, Fundraising, and Management & General ratios all continue to be in the very healthy range.
