We were compelled to find new ways of bringing light, hope and opportunity to our students amidst a global pandemic. Despite the uncertainty and isolation that gripped much of the world, SquashBusters held strong, guided by its values of love, connection, and belonging. At no point did programming shut down — not even for one minute — and SquashBusters doubled down on its commitment to its students, families, and staff to be a safe space, a respite from the stresses of the world, and a place of growth, love, and community.

There were many bright spots and reasons to celebrate: • Our staff demonstrated agility and dedication to their students with innovative ways to connect in person when it was safe to do so and virtually when it was not, keeping them engaged through an incredible variety of trips, activities, and virtual clubs.

• All 35 seniors from Boston and Lawrence graduated and have post-secondary plans including attending schools such as Bates College, Johns Hopkins University, Trinity College, and Northeastern University.

• SQB alumni in college persisted at a rate of 94%.

• SquashBusters renewed its focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, by exploring ways to improve our own organizational culture, curriculum, and infrastructure.

• And perhaps the pinnacle of all the bright spots this year has been our partnership with Lawrence Community Works to build a permanent home for SQB Lawrence. In addition to securing the future of the program and allowing SQB to serve thousands of Lawrence kids, this collaboration will enable SquashBusters to put down roots to better serve our Lawrence families and to become more accessible and visible to the greater Lawrence community.

None of this would have been possible without you. As the lights start to come back on over the courts and our facilities again fill with music, laughter, and the unmistakable “pop” of a squash ball hitting the wall, we want to express our gratitude. We would like to thank every staff member who threw all their creativity into making programming possible during the pandemic. We want to thank each student who prioritized this community amid chaos. We want to thank the parents and families who adapted over and over again, and trusted SquashBusters to keep their children safe. We want to thank our Board and Leadership Councils, our donors, and our supporters who propelled us through an incredibly uncertain year. There is no one we’d rather move forward with.

Within these pages, you will find letters from members of our community to each other, describing what SquashBusters means to them. Coming from every corner of our program — students, staff, partners, and supporters — these individuals illuminate the depth and diversity of experience within a single organization. When I think of an alternative universe, where you decided to stay in Colombia, I see everything I would have lost. I would not have been a student at SquashBusters and had all the fantastic opportunities, met my amazing

teammates, and learned so many life lessons. At SQB I learned how important it is to work hard and fight for every shot, no matter the result. That is how I deal with being an immigrant in this country. I keep pushing even when I feel like giving up. I owe this to you! You taught me by your actions what it means to work hard and never give up because good things will come when you do.

If not for you, I would not have found my love for working in youth development and being a part of a student’s growth. Little did I know that I loved being with the students, seeing how amazing they are, and seeing the growth they go through during their years at SQB. You taught me to go for the opportunities that come my way, and that life has a way of showing you your path and what you are supposed to do.

Without all your sacrifices, I would not have the amazing support system I have found in my friends, colleagues, and students. Just like you, they have helped shape the person I am today. So, in moments when you feel like maybe you should have stayed in Colombia, remember that we all have so much today because of the sacrifices you made. There is still so much I can do, and my future is so bright. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me everything!

DEAR PROSPECTIVE SQUASHBUSTERS STUDENT, When I say I’m thankful for being introduced to SquashBusters, I mean it. The friendships I’ve made and the great opportunities that I’ve experienced with this program were not what I expected when I joined the team. I heard about SquashBusters from a friend who was already at SQB. When he told me all about it, I wasn’t that interested, to be honest.

I’d never even heard of squash. When he asked me to visit the facility, I declined. But he bugged me 24/7 and eventually I gave in. I was worried about tryouts — new sport, new people — but I warmed up to squash and I was greeted by an amazing community who all made me feel so welcome.

Joining in 8th grade I thought I would be different from everybody. I thought I’d never catch up in squash or in making friends. But with the help of the people around me and some great coaches, I was motivated to improve at squash. I was so determined that I even came on days when I didn’t have practice. I convinced friends to come to squash on their days off too, and soon we were there a lot. Our hard work paid off when we got to participate in the Squash and Education Alliance

Teams Tournament at Yale University. To compete in one of these tournaments was such a privilege. It was an opportunity that was only given to a handful of kids. I’ve made so many memories from enjoying weekend trips to competing in squash tournaments to camping with my teammates. If you’re interested in joining SQB and you feel anxious about trying out for the team, don’t be intimidated. SquashBusters won't choose you for the team based on how well you play squash, but on what kind of person you are. Just have fun, try your best, and be a great teammate, and you’ll be on the team in no time.

D E A R S Q U A S H B U S T E R S S TA F F , When I first joined SquashBusters back in 2012, I was very shy, not athletic in the slightest, and constantly thinking about my future — even as a seventh grader. Although I was a high-achieving student, there were few times in school where I felt appreciated or that my presence was meaningful to the people around me. I was always searching for a place that felt like a second home. The moment that SQB staff came to the gym at the Arlington School in North Lawrence, I knew I had found what I was looking for.

The staff at SQB are truly exceptional. Throughout my time as a student in the program, and now as a post-secondary student and alumna, the staff have been people I can go to for absolutely anything.

For a student as shy as I was, having the opportunity to interact with program staff that took the time to understand me was one of the things that helped me break out of my shell. You are all such an integral part of the SQB family, and I know I would not be where I am today if it were not for the experiences I shared with you. You made me feel respected and loved and I am a happier, more successful woman as a result. There is something so special about the SQB staff — the energy you

I am so appreciative of all the staff at SQB because without you students would not have people whom we can call our coaches, mentors, and family. You do so much for the program and the impact you have on the students and our families is so great.

TO MY FELLOW UNIVERSITY CLUB MEMBERS, On a cold February morning in 2006, my assistant barged into my office and excitedly announced, “Ming Tsai is on your line!” A little annoyed that she didn’t screen the call, I told her that I did not know a Ming Tsai and that she should take a message. Frustrated at my ignorance, she exclaimed, “You need to pick up the phone — don’t keep Ming waiting!” I asked my assistant to explain who Ming was, which she did with great urgency. And so began an incredible journey that has changed me forever.

In May of that year, I played on Ming’s Derby team, True Blue. I met Greg Zaff and learned about SquashBusters. I talked to some of the students and quickly caught on to the magic that Greg had created. I had donated time and money to charitable causes in the past, but

I was never invested. With SquashBusters, I was all in. With the powerful combination of academic enrichment, community service and squash, SQB was delivering on its mission of College, Character and Health, and tipping the balance towards equity and opportunity, one student at a time. That this game we all love was getting democratized in the process was just a bonus.

I have gone on to play in every Derby since, serve on the SQB Board and chair the Board of the Squash and Education Alliance. Along the way, I have met some of my favorite people in the world and reaped the rewards that come with being invested in making a difference.

Greg and I still disagree 90% of the time and we bicker endlessly like children, but I love him like a brother.

Greg started SquashBusters in 1996 at the University Club. The connection between our Club and SQB is a special one that has only strengthened over the last 25 years. Many of you already know about SquashBusters but for those that might only have peripheral knowledge or involvement, I urge you to get closer to the program — with your time or treasure… preferably both. Your soul will reap the rewards, I promise.

DEAR MOSES BROWN COMMUNITY, Here's a confession: as a teacher at Moses Brown, when I first heard about the plan to help build the SquashBusters facility, a fancy venue for an elitist sport, I was dead set against it. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’ve been a teacher and a coach for 20 years, and there have only been a handful of experiences during that time where I felt that I was making a real difference to the world around me — SquashBusters is one of them.

Since it opened, I’ve been volunteering at SquashBusters a few hours a day five days a week, watching kids learn and grow. From talking to their parents and teachers — and the kids themselves — I have come to realize how important it is for them to have a place to go every day to study and play and succeed and be appreciated. Being able to see and work with the students year after year makes me appreciate just how high these kids can climb. SquashBusters isn’t about the game of squash after all; it’s about the many lessons learned on the court — focus, self-confidence,

discipline, sportsmanship — life lessons that apply to every aspect of life off the court.

I love heading to SQB after my teaching day at Moses Brown ends. It’s great to see the kids fly off the bus and race to the classroom or to the court, where they battle to win a point off a volunteer or, even sweeter, Rodney. But my favorite memory of SQB is family night and the highlight is when mothers, fathers, and siblings, along with friends, neighbors, and relatives, are coaxed onto the court for a lesson from their daughter or son. It would be hard to think of a better moment for the kids, proudly imparting their knowledge of squash; for their family members, sharing the experience and seeing how far the kids have come; and for the SQB staff and volunteers, appreciating firsthand what they helped make happen. Inspiration, pure and simple.

DEAR VOLUNTEERS, Relationships are the heart of SquashBusters, and that is why we are deeply committed to volunteering our time and energy to the organization. We have a strong and decades-long relationship with SQB and with each other and we were honored to have it continue as we served as co-captains of Team Unbridled for a sixth consecutive Derby in 2021. For those into lingo, we are NDY (Not Dead Yet).

Beyond valuing friendships, SquashBusters excels at building students’ relationships with squash, with school, and with the greater SQB community. With inspired introductions and tireless follow-up from dedicated and talented staff, SQB students begin to discover new possibilities and new narratives.

As squash enthusiasts, we are eager to stay involved in and grow our beloved sport. Whether playing, coaching, or refereeing, we are committed to providing young players of the game proof positive that this is a game for life and a community for life. There is a special sense of shared dedication among squash players across all levels, and we observe the same excitement from the newest and youngest players to seasoned Masters players. SQB, thanks for bringing new people to the party and ensuring a life-changing first few years in squash.

We have been involved in all three of SquashBusters programs — Boston, Lawrence, and Providence. One of the best and most reliable features of a visit to any of the locations is the sense of spirit in the air. At SquashBusters, everyone participates, everyone is trusted, and everyone belongs. Playing squash, alongside a sense of belonging, feels more important than ever after this past year. It feels great to be involved with such a trustworthy, people-centered, mission-driven organization.

DEAR FUTURE SELF, It's the 9th grade version of Matthyaz writing to you. Right now, I’m at Mount Pleasant High School, playing squash with SquashBusters and really experiencing some of the best times of my life. I've been on some amazing trips, like when I went to Washington D.C., and to the Squash and Education Alliance Team Nationals tournament in Connecticut. Then there was the SQB Individuals tournament after COVID where I was able to play squash after months of being home and had fun meeting other SQB students. You should know them all now (hopefully). And there were other memorable experiences that were not on court, like doing community service with the Providence Parks Department, hanging out one-on-one with the staff, and many more. SQB is so special. It's changed the way I think about things and painted a picture of my future that I couldn’t have imagined when I started. I’m really going to get serious about high school and try to get into the best college. The

reason I’ve stuck with SQB so far is because it's the best way to figure out what to do next, find out what success means, and make Mom and Uncle proud.

I’m so excited to see the progression of my squash game. Hopefully, you have won a couple more tournaments, so you have the most trophies in the family. I'm more excited about the new friends I know I will meet during this adventure with SQB and the opportunities that will come my way.

More than anything I hope I have been a role model to younger and future SQB students. I hope when I’m reading this in the future, I can look back and know that SQB helped me get where I am.

T O T H E G R E AT E R L AW R E N C E C O M M U N I T Y , As a high school counselor at Greater Lawrence Technical School, I have witnessed first-hand what an incredible asset the SquashBusters program is for our city’s young people. I have had the opportunity to work closely with the SquashBusters staff as we support our mutual students in their post-high school planning. Whether it is a student pursuing employment in the plumbing trade, or one applying to a selective four-year college, the staff's attentiveness and skill in the support they provide exemplify the dedication and commitment that is the hallmark of SquashBusters - propelling our students toward lives full of meaning and personal success. Nothing is outside SQB’s comfort zone. Mike Shannon, the Post-Secondary Access Coordinator, is the embodiment of this commitment. He worked tirelessly this year to figure out how best to support an undocumented graduating senior in her pursuit of an affordable four-year college education and he advocated for her throughout the application and scholarship process.

Mike’s advocacy in part led to the attainment of a full-ride scholarship to a highly selective university. What an amazing and well-deserved outcome! Many of our students have complex needs due to their exposure to poverty, and the additional help and support from SquashBusters is invaluable.

Because of my students’, and my own, positive experience with SquashBusters, I have served as an unofficial SquashBusters ambassador among my colleagues at Greater Lawrence Technical School. I am convinced of its merits and want others to know about the organization too. I am familiar with many of the strong youth-serving organizations in the City of Lawrence, and SquashBusters stands out because it meets the needs of our city's youth in a unique way. The game of squash may be what initially hooks young people, but it’s the ongoing supportive relationships with peers and with staff members that grow their connection to SquashBusters through the years. I look forward to continuing to nurture this mutually beneficial relationship with SquashBusters as we work together to support Lawrence’s young people in their teenage years and in their quest for successful outcomes into adulthood.

DEAR BOSTON SQUASH COMMUNITY, On March 21, 2013, a SquashBusters student, unbeknownst to him, said thirteen words that changed my life. “This is the best community I will ever join in my entire life.”

Nine years ago, I joined the best community I will ever join in my entire life. The power of SquashBusters connects us through a common love of the game of squash across racial, geographic, and socioeconomic differences, and forms a community that embraces change and challenges growth.

During my tenure, SquashBusters has changed drastically. Student enrollment has increased by 300%; the Providence site opened its doors; and a building is on the way in Lawrence. We have codified our post-secondary programming to more fully support students and connect them to internship and employment opportunities. The original six Lawrence 6th grade students will graduate from college in May 2022, and for the first time, the Post-Secondary Program is larger than any of the three middle school/high school programs that SquashBusters operates.. Through these changes, SquashBusters continues to live its mission every single day, with students and families at the center of each decision and action as we strive to be a positive, supportive and inclusive community.

Community is a place of personal growth, a place I can learn, listen, challenge my assumptions, and work hard to become a better version of myself. Through students’ poignant reflections of the world, I have learned humility, empathy, and perspective. I have learned laughter can power me through the hardest conversations, even at those times when a barrier seems to block every path forward.

Through my colleagues, I have learned grace and leadership, and have witnessed the personification of a “supportive team”.

Nine years ago, I joined the best community I will ever join in my entire life. I internalized those thirteen words during my interview, and my curiosity got the better of me. I had to know what the student meant by “best community ever”. Today, I know. It is love. Love of self,

TO THE NORTHEASTERN COMMUNITY, The past 29 years in the human behavior business have taught me that an essential element of individual well-being is the relentless pursuit of self-discovery. I define self-discovery as the identification and optimization of one’s individual gifts for the purpose of contributing to the world. For me, self-discovery is a human right, not a privilege. Eight years ago, when I joined Northeastern University, I discovered that an organization known as SquashBusters was expressly dedicated to guiding young people through the process of self-discovery and I was intrigued.

Using the great sport of squash as a fulcrum, SquashBusters has for decades opened up the worlds of squash and higher education to young people that have a background more like mine than that of the typical squash player. Making a global sport like squash accessible has demonstrated to the young people who are part of the SquashBusters family that the world is, in fact, accessible, and that they can find their place in it.

The power of SquashBusters lies in the robust culture of care, compassion, and devotion to the well-being of all the students they serve. SquashBusters is a paragon of what it means to not only support the notion of equality but what it means to be a practitioner in the promotion of self-discovery. For the Northeastern community to have such an organization at its fingertips, not only offers each of us the opportunity for connection to and involvement in the self-discovery of SQB’s students, it also enables the discovery of new ways for each of us to contribute to the world and leave a mark on campus and in the surrounding communities. There is no equality in our nation if there is not the means for all of us to discover our own potential. It is the process of finding one’s space in our world that provides meaning to this life and makes our communities and our society thrive.

I grew up with my mother and 5 siblings in the tough neighborhood of Roxbury, Massachusetts, just like where some of you live now. A program called SquashBusters, the first of its kind when it was founded in 1996, came to my school when I was in sixth grade and it changed my life.

At 11 years old I had no idea what I was getting into, maybe like a lot of you. I remember wanting nothing more than to be a basketball player but that changed once I got on a squash court. I fell in love with squash and how easily relatable the game could be to life.

For example — the volley. In squash, the volley allows you to apply pressure, gives you time to recover, and most importantly prevents you from getting stuck in the back corners in trouble. Now take this same knowledge and apply it to your lives. If you take life situations early you avoid struggling with them later. It was life-lessons like this that have furthered my love for the game and why I have come to know squash as my game of life.

One of the greatest gifts I ever received from SquashBusters was the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in a safe space. I chose to use every opportunity available to me. I hope you will take control of your life and do the same. If you can fully dedicate yourself to SquashDrive I can assure you that opportunities will unfold. Everyone associated with SquashDrive wants nothing more than to see you succeed in life, whatever that looks like for you.

DEAR SQUASHBUSTERS SUPPORTER, Prior to picking up a racquet and that squishy ball, my life wasn’t necessarily destined for success.

I was born in the Dominican Republic to young parents who had yet to figure out their own lives. I grew up with my grandparents for the first 8 years of my life, at which point it was decided that I would move to the U.S. to live with my mom. I had to surrender family, friends, and the only stability I had known. But, like many other immigrant families, we came here for access to better education and a more hopeful future.

As a young student, I disliked school and I struggled to keep up while trying to learn English. But my mom drilled into my head that education, specifically academic success, was the rope that would help pull us out of our struggles. My mother worked two jobs and I knew there was no way we would be able to afford college unless I earned a scholarship.

Enter SquashBusters. In the 8th grade I tried out for the program and completely fell in love with the sport. The courts were a place where I could learn something new while also relieving some of the stresses I dealt with at home. The academic enrichment coupled with competitive squash allowed my body and my mind to thrive.

Soon enough, I had developed all sorts of new skills, athletic and interpersonal, that could rival any student’s resume. My sights were set on a NESCAC school where I could take my new talents and network; soon I earned the Posse Foundation scholarship to Hamilton College, and I never looked back. I played varsity squash there and had a transformative liberal arts experience.

After graduation, I came back to Boston to begin a career in financial services. I continue to feed my passion for squash and for SQB by volunteering with students and serving on the Alumni Committee and Advisory Council.

I share these successes with you as your generous time and effort played an essential part in it.

2020-2021 FINANCIALS SquashBusters, thanks to our supporters, has maintained a position of financial strength througout the fiscal year, both on an operating level and in the capital campaign for our future home in Lawrence.

The SQB community embraced our modified major fundraisers and demonstrated that not even a global pandemic will keep this amazing "village" from supporting the mission.
