To Our Supporters and Friends, In May of this year, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence had the great honor of being named Non-Profit of the Year at Enterprise Bank’s 2010 Celebration of Excellence. We were proud to accept this award on behalf of all of you who partner with us to help our kids overcome the daunting challenges life throws their way. With the help of our Board of Governors, our staff and our volunteers, our kids continue to amaze us. They take the first step when the path is not clear, they reach beyond their grasp, and they set goals and exceed them. They excel.

We know that the only way our kids can break through the barrier of poverty and excel is to get a great education. This is our mission. While we offer fun activities that bring kids into our Club, our goal is to help them succeed in school and go on to college. In a community with some of the lowest MCAS scores in the state, the after-school crowd in our homework room has quadrupled over the last four years. In a community where only 48% of high school students graduate in four years, we saw all of our seniors graduate and enroll in college this fall.

We believe the secret to academic success is to engage kids’ natural enthusiasm for sports, arts and recreation, and then show them how character, leadership and healthy choices help them succeed in every area of their lives. To make this happen, we have to connect with every child individually, to meet them where they are and help them envision their unique future. We couldn’t do this without our hundreds of outstanding volunteers who coach, tutor, mentor, encourage and inspire our members to transform their lives.

Through your gifts this past year, each of you helped a child excel by enabling us to provide the programs that ignite his or her passion. Despite the difficult economy, you helped us meet our fundraising goals and provide the stability and opportunity these young people need and deserve. Looking forward, we hope you will work with us to secure the future of this place for these kids by building our endowment fund and a capital maintenance fund.

In the pages to come, we’d like to introduce you to some of the incredible partnerships between kids and volunteers that take root at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. We’d like to show you the impact that an excellent program and a personal relationship can have on a kid’s life. We’d like to inspire you the way these kids inspire us, to surpass limits, transcend difficulty and excel.

Education At the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, we believe that to excel in school is the surest way to excel in life. Our kids face enormous obstacles to success simply because they were born poor in a city where poverty, violence, drugs and neglect are tenaciously intertwined. To help give these kids a chance, we have scores of dedicated high school, college and adult volunteers who invest their hearts and minds in helping our kids achieve in school to the very best of their abilities.

Chilezie Nnadi journeyed half-way around the world from his native Nigeria to study engineering in America.

When he landed a job at Philips Healthcare, he realized it was time to give back. He sought out the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence to volunteer as a tutor, and soon forged a bond with the kids, many of whom are children of immigrants like him. Now Chilezie comes to the Club two days a week to tutor kids, and his greatest joy has been working with Angelica Little.

Angelica met Chilezie when she entered Central Catholic High School as a freshman. She was struggling with science and math at her challenging, new school. In Chilezie, Angelica found both a mentor and a friend, “the older brother I never had,” she smiles. With Chilezie’s patient help, Angelica has become a self-learner, working her way to answers step by step. The two of them celebrate her victories together – from test scores and project grades, to her 4.0 grade point average her junior year.

With this kind of academic success, Angelica is now thinking about what’s next in her life. Chilezie continues to push her to think about college and career choices.

Right now, she’s interested in occupational therapy, one of many possibilities now on her horizon.

Like so many of our volunteers, Chilezie came to the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence to offer his expertise in science and math. What he found here were lasting and meaningful relationships with young people who need an adult to believe in them, nurture them and inspire them to excel. And to show them, step by step, how to do it.

sports, Fitness and recreation Tom Burkardt, a successful technology entrepreneur, first walked through the doors at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence 15 years ago to watch his son play basketball against a BGCL team. What he saw touched his heart because he knew what it meant to grow up poor. The last of eight children, Tom was raised in Kentucky, where Christmas gifts were often hand-me-down clothes. He understood the courage it takes to strive each and every day when the obstacles are so high. Seeing the kids on the basketball court reminded him of what he learned as a young boy—self-discipline, endurance and leadership were the tools he needed to transform his own life.

Since that day, Tom has been an integral part of BGCL, from the boardroom to the basketball court. Last year he signed on as coach for the seventh-grade Boys’ Academic Basketball Program. With the help of his sons, now grown, Tom coached 27 young boys on the court and in the mandatory study hall that is the anchor of the Academic Basketball program. On the court the boys learned to encourage peers and to respect adults; in study hall they learned that with perseverance and attention to homework they could excel in school.

Both Yeraldo R. of Lawrence and Sean M. of Andover joined the Club their seventh-grade year to be part of the basketball program. For Yeraldo, the team was composed of many of his classmates and friends from Lawrence Public Schools, but for Sean the team opened up a host of new friendships. The boys quickly learned to grasp the game. The boys found Coach Burkardt competitive but fair, expecting hard work on the court and in school. A coach and a game brought together two kids raised in such disparate communities with seemingly little in common to learn the lessons all young men need – discipline, commitment, friendship and leadership.

The Academic Basketball program is the cornerstone of the Club’s Sports, Fitness and Recreation programs. To play in the program, club members must put in an hour of study time for every hour on the court, and they must provide regular progress reports from their teachers. With this potent mix of encouragement and motivation, youth develop the skills to compete and excel.

Volunteering as a basketball coach, Tom recognized how organized sports contribute to excellence in character.

Character and Leadership development To excel in life, young people need a vision of a compelling future. They rely on the adults in their lives to help them sharpen that vision with positive role modeling, instruction, encouragement and experiences that make it real. At the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, we work with kids to build character and develop leadership skills that empower them to step out into the community and the wider world with confidence and integrity.

Character and Leadership Development programs at the Boys & Girls Club include service clubs as well as career planning and goal setting. As members of the Torch Club and Keystone, our youth develop and lead volunteer activities at the Club and in the Lawrence community.

Planning for the Future is a comprehensive mentoring initiative that includes goal setting, college preparation, internships and leadership development. Kids work individually, with mentors, in small groups and in classroom settings to master the practical skills needed to achieve their goals, including preparing for high school entrance exams and the SATs, writing college essays and applying for jobs. They visit college fairs and campuses, accompany mentors to work and participate in professional summer internships at local businesses.

The future is bright for Julizabeth S. a junior at Central Catholic High School. Julizabeth is an honorroll student and serves as president of Keystone. She eagerly participates in the many activities of Planning for the Future. Last year, with the help of the Boys & Girls Club, Julizabeth landed an internship at Key Polymer Corporation, a Lawrence-based company that manufactures specialty adhesives for industrial customers.

Julizabeth excelled in this position of adult responsibility, and her summer opportunity with Key Polymer grew into an on-going part-time job.

Under the leadership of its president, Robert Baker, a committed member of the Lawrence community, Key Polymer is one of 12 companies to demonstrate its commitment to corporate responsibility by offering summer internships to our members. A small company where the bottom line is of concern every day, Key Polymer found in Julizabeth a hard worker who produced results.

Julizabeth is being recruited by several prestigious colleges.

When Bob considers his young protégée, he notes with some pride, “Hope we can afford such an accomplished college graduate.”

health and life skills Achieving your best requires a healthy body, and the New Balance Foundation is helping our members move by providing a strong starting block. Through the New Balance Healthy Living Club, NB Foundation is inspiring our girls and boys to learn about good nutrition, commit to healthy eating and engage in challenging physical activity.

The Boston-based running shoe company, which hosts more than 600 associates at a manufacturing facility and distribution center in Lawrence, relentlessly pursues new designs and new technologies to inspire and equip athletes to excel. Whether the goal is running a marathon or taking the first steps towards a fitness regimen, the folks at New Balance are there to help. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, the New Balance Foundation has helped design, develop, implement and fund the Healthy Living Club. Andrea Henry, NB Community Outreach Specialist, has arranged for dozens of New Balance associates to lead club members through a variety of fun fitness challenges.

Since the inception of the New Balance Healthy Living Club, more than 100 girls who would have been identified as inactive have taken nutrition classes and met personal goals for healthy eating and physical activity. With this success, the program is now being expanded to include boys as well.

Meray C., a seventh-grader at Donald P. Timony Grammar School in Methuen, was one of the first girls to participate in the Healthy Living Club. Meray struggled with exercise and eating healthy foods before starting with the Healthy Living Club. In her first year of participation she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes and found the program provided the needed information to adopt a healthy diet. She is eating better, actively participating in basketball and fitness activities at the club and helping with cooking at home.

The Arts What happens when you give a quiet, intense young girl the opportunity to participate in a world-class writing workshop for teens? Sometimes it creates the spark that ignites a passion, a passion that drives her to excel.

A junior at Lawrence High School’s Performing & Fine Arts High School, Kiara P. is sensitive and aware, deeply committed to friends and family. Kiara has grown up with a single parent in one of the toughest cities in Massachusetts, and a lot of what she is exposed to isn’t pretty. But as a photographer, Kiara sees the kids and the culture around her with the eye of an artist. She hears their music and she feels their struggles. Reserved on the outside, she has a lot to say on the inside.

One Saturday afternoon in November, Kiara met her friends at the Boys & Girls Club for a writing workshop called “What’s Going On in the World Today (and What Are You Going to Do about It)?” The day-long workshop was sponsored by Andover Bread Loaf Teacher Network, an outreach program of the prestigious Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Roberto German, alumni of both the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence and the Bread Loaf summer writing program, led a discussion and writing session and encouraged participants, including Kiara, to create and share their work.

Sometimes a spark is all it takes to ignite a flame that reveals and transforms a world.

For 120 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence has been in the forefront of youth development in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts, working with young people that other agencies have had difficulty reaching. We are the largest provider of after-school programming in the area, attracting a membership of more than 3,200 of some of the poorest children in one of the poorest cities in the Commonwealth. BGCL fills the void for many of those youth by providing a safe out-of-school place where they can learn, grow and acquire the skills they will need to become productive members of our society.

The community our youth call home is devastated by persistent and pervasive poverty. One in 4 families lives in poverty; 86.7% of school children qualify for Free and Reduced Price Lunch. The unemployment rate for Lawrence was 17.8%, almost double the state average of 9.3%. The city is rife with street violence, domestic violence and drugs, with a 45% higher incidence of violent crime in 2008 than the statewide average. Only 27% of the parents have college degrees; most are unable to either advocate for and support their children’s current education or encourage them to seek higher education. Consequently, the youth have little idea of the career possibilities available to them and often have low levels of aspiration.

Despite these obstacles our kids are remarkably resilient.

They excel under the guidance and encouragement of a highly skilled youth development staff. They are willing to work hard and realize their dreams as they walk alongside volunteers who not only care but instill a sense of confidence in each of the children.

Our volunteers and staff support youth development in five core areas: Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, and Fitness and Recreation. Educational programs include tutoring, mentoring, career development, job preparation and science exploration.

We also provide instruction in music and the arts, an award-winning teen pregnancy prevention program, a gang prevention program, a comprehensive healthy living initiative, water safety and swimming instruction and a multitude of sports and recreational initiatives.

average of 200 youths daily for this past year. Many of our graduates served as role models and leaders of the Club. As members of Keystone, they served food as part of our Dinner Program that nightly feeds more than 300 children, a total of more than 80,000 meals in 2010!

One by one, we are building relationships that give each of our kids security and the knowledge that they matter, that they can overcome obstacles and that they can excel.

Academic Basketball Awareness Camp (ABA) celebrated its 30th year this summer. ABA is our flagship summer program offering 150 boys and 75 girls the opportunity to play basketball at Merrimack College under the mentorship of ABA alumni. These volunteer coaches come back year after year to inspire the kids to dream big, set goals and succeed in academics.

Sports-minded volunteers coach youth in the fundamental skills of basketball, wrestling and soccer. High school and college students and lifelong learners guide children through school lessons, college and career choices. Mentors listen and encourage young people in goal setting, self-esteem, friendships and social skills.

Our programs aim to engage kids’ natural desire for fun and to use activities as vehicles to teach the skills and values that enable a child to excel. We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that traps so many children in the Greater Lawrence community.

One of the important volunteer events of the year was Mentor Day. Our youth explored the vocations of television anchor, radio host, police officer, banker, pilot and many more.

At our Graduation Party, we celebrated for the second year in a row as 100 percent of our high school seniors graduated and enrolled in college! Many spent countless hours studying in our Learning Center, which has been serving an

Another highlight of the year during Summerfest, our seven-week summer program, was a service-learning partnership with University of Notre Dame. Six college students made a full-time commitment to the Club for seven weeks and returned to their Midwestern campus to write reflections on the life-changing experiences they received from our kids.

In the words of one of those college students, Emily Norris: “I learned to discover who I was—that while I might be strong at math, I am even stronger at compassion and listening and helping people....I learned what it is like to see a child find himself, as I saw children who struggled with language or friends at the beginning of the summer make significant strides in seven weeks.”

The Beacon Club hosted a series of small group workshops for girls, with ageappropriate experiential learning activities on hygiene, relationships, puberty and sexuality, self-esteem and social acceptance. Club members also participated in a 10-week teen pregnancy-prevention program, Baby Think It Over.

review We reached more than 600 kids with summer swimming lessons, and the BGCL swim team finished its third season. Our Keeping Kids Safe Aquatics Program not only teaches kids to swim but also provides water-safety and physical-fitness instruction, CPR and Red Cross certification.

With help from the Comcast Foundation and Intel, we have new equipment, software and trained staff in our state-ofthe-art computer lab. Through a digital arts curriculum called Club Tech, we use interactive projects, one-on-one instruction and hands-on activities to teach web and graphic design, photo illustration, music composition and movie making.

In October, more than 60 employees from Converse came to the Club and created a day to remember for our kids. With impressive organization and good cheer, they set up a “shoe store” and individually fitted every child with a pair of Converse sneakers. Afterward, they led the kids in special activities in the gym and grilled hot dogs and burgers for all.

Youth of the year Two outstanding teens, Raily H. and Greydy D. were selected as the 2010 Youth of the Year by the Beacon Club and Water Street Club, respectively. Both of these long-time Club members excel academically, serve as leaders and role models and volunteer within the community.

We closed the year with the largest Christmas Party ever—our gymnasium overflowed with more than 800 kids. The Ninety Nine Restaurant supplied dinner for everyone, and thanks to the generosity of many, every child received a gift. For some of our members, that gift was the only one they received this year, and the joy on their faces was unforgettable.

We were humbled and honored to be named Enterprise Bank’s 2010 Non-Profit of the Year at its annual Celebration of Excellence banquet. It’s an award that belongs to our whole community—our staff, our volunteers, our supporters and our kids—in recognition of the extraordinary work we accomplish together.

Raily, a senior at Greater Lawrence Technical High School, is an honor student, member of the National Honor Society and class president.

In addition, he is an active volunteer at the Beacon Club serving as president of the Keystone Club; additionally, he is a community volunteer outside of Beacon. Raily plans to attend Merrimack College in the fall, majoring in architecture and minoring in law.

Greydy is a 2010 graduate of Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire. A member of the Club since she was seven, Greydy served as president of the Torch Club and contributed countless hours as a volunteer tutor in the Learning Center. When she began attending Kimball, the distance didn’t stop her from continuing to support youth from the Club. She returned to volunteer and enjoy the activities during her school breaks, served as a role model for other youth and was influential in obtaining significant scholarship funding so that three more Club members could attend Kimball.

Greydy is a freshman at Fairfield University in Connecticut, studying international business and business law.
