Message from the President
Dear EBBA Friends and Membership,
It is my honor to present to you the 2025 Eastern Brahman Breeders Association Membership Directory. Our goal, as an association, is to assist youth and adult breeders of Brahman cattle across the United States to promote use of Brahman cattle for sustainable agriculture practices with integrity, honesty, and transparency. One way that we are dedicated to this cause is in ensuring that Brahman breeders in our area have ample marketing and networking opportunities, which includes the book currently in your hands.
As our world’s climate changes and summers are getting hotter, the American Brahman breed is becoming more and more valuable, especially along the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States. Whether cattlemen are interested in purebred, registered Brahmans, or if they’re utilizing Brahmans for crossbreeding, the Brahman breed of cattle isn’t going away any time soon, and we are proud to be in a position to help local breeders connect with like-minded potential customers.
Whether you’re a longtime Brahman breeder or are just getting started, I encourage you to study the pages of this directory and find some folks to connect with. Although the EBBA was started with Areas 11 and 12 at the forefront of our minds, we welcome members from all across the United States. If you have any questions about what we’re about, please feel free to reach out to me, or any of our officers or directors below.
With gratitude, Tyler Salazar President, Eastern Brahman Breeders Assn.

We began our journey with registered Brahman cattle in 2019. As we continue to breed we are not only focusing on polled genetics, but are also utilizing elite and proven horned genetics. Our goal is not to produce cattle alone; but to produce good performing cattle that are phenotypically good enough to show. As a third generation cattle farmer, raising a fourth generation, we consider ourselves very blessed to not only work together on this new journey but to share many accomplishments and memories along the way.

EBBA History
In 2018, Cyana Briles of Trinity, NC reached out to the North Carolina Mountain State Fair about adding a Brahman show to their 2019 livestock show schedule. They were in favor of the endeavor, but required a sponsor, so she quickly got to work trying to find a group that could help fund the event. On December 31st, 2018, she made a fateful phone call to the president of a regional Brahman breed organization, inquiring about a potential sponsorship. Her request was met with laughter, saying that she had no idea what she was doing, that it couldn’t be done, and they had no interest in entertaining her idea. Cyana will be the first to tell you that her best and worst quality is her stubbornness, so on January 1st, 2019, the Eastern Brahman Breeders Association was founded. The very first EBBA Extravaganza was hosted at the NC Mountain State Fair that September, and since then, the EBBA has grown tremendously, expanding to cover all states within ABBA areas 11 and 12 and becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit. The EBBA Extravaganza, our flagship event, permanently relocated to the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, GA in 2023, and is now the EBBA Extravaganza-Bonanza weekend (nicknamed ExBo), consisting of 2 ABBA sanctioned points shows and a fundraising auction highlighting some of the incredible genetics available in our area. The EBBA also hosts the EBBA Christmas Classic in Hattiesburg, MS, our premiere Junior event, which consists of a Junior and an Open show, as well as a number of contests for our Juniors including livestock judging, sales talk, and quiz bowl. In addition to our two annual shows, we sponsor a number of additional shows and events in our area, all with the goals of facilitating breeder networking, helping breeders market their cattle, and educating the public about Brahman cattle and beef.

Historical Points
Dr. James Bolton Davis brought in Brahman cattle, though records of his first two bulls were lost during the Civil War.
Brahman crossbred cattle were sent to Hays County, Texas
Mifflin Kenedy and Richard King acquired fifteen Brahman bulls in New Orleans and transported them to Rockport, Texas.
J. M. Frost and Albert Montgomery imported two Brahman bulls, Khedive and Richard III, from India to New Orleans, where they were bred with the descendants of Barrow’s bulls.
Dr. Campbell and Campbell R. Bryce imported two Indian bulls and four cows from Egypt.
The British government shipped two to four bulls to Richard Barrow in Louisiana.
Rancher Mifflin Kenedy purchased 120 cattle that were a mix of Brahman and Durham breeds.
Brahman herds were established in Galveston and on the ranches of James A. McFaddin and John David Miller in Victoria.
John N. Keeran and Abel H. (Shanghai) Pierce also purchased five Brahman cattle in Indianola.
Following Albert Montgomery’s passing, Allen M. McFaddin of Victoria and F. B. Wood of Refugio purchased his remaining herd of Brahman cattle.
The American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) was established in 1924, with J.W. Sartwelle of Houston, Texas, serving as its first recording secretary. Sartwelle proposed the name “Brahman” for the new beef breed, a name that has since become synonymous with adaptability and efficiency in cattle production.
Brahman-influenced cattle now make up over 50% of the global cow population. Known as the “Mother Cow of the South,” Brahman-cross females are prized for their resilience, particularly in harsh climates and when grazing on low-quality forage. Their adaptability ensures their continued viability in the beef industry.
The Brahman breed also plays a crucial role in the fed cattle sector, producing high-quality carcasses that meet modern consumer demands.
The first notable import of Indian cattle to the United States occurred in 1854 when Richard Barrow, a sugar and cotton farmer from St. Francisville, Louisiana, received two bulls from the British government. This import laid the foundation for the development of the American Brahman.
International marketing of the American Brahman began in the early 1930s when the breed was still in its infancy. Thanks to the dedication of ABBA’s founders, staff, and members, the American Brahman has become one of the most influential cattle breeds worldwide. As the first beef breed developed in the United States, the Brahman has been exported extensively, particularly to tropical regions, where its traits continue to benefit the global cattle industry.
The Hagenbeck Circus imported another group of Brahman cattle for exhibition at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
Due to the surra outbreak, the U.S. Department of Agriculture banned cattle imports from India until 1946. During this period, any Brahman cattle entering the United States came through Brazil and Canada.
Led by cattleman James W. Sartwelle, a group of Brahman breeders convened at Houston’s Rice Hotel and established the American Brahman Breeders Association to register and promote the breed.
A. P. Borden traveled to India on behalf of the Pierce estate and selected fifty-one Brahman cattle. The animals were quarantined in New York Harbor, where around eighteen died from surra.
Dr. Ferdinand Ruffier imported ninety Brahman cattle through Eagle Pass, Texas, distributing them across South Texas.
Over 33,000 American Brahman cattle had been registered.
Eighteen additional Zebu bulls were imported from Brazil to Texas.
More than 350,000 Brahman cattle had been registered, and the breeders association, headquartered in Houston, had approximately 300 American Brahman breeders from Texas
