Maternal Mortality Prevention in Indian Country: Resource Toolkit

Maternal health is the foundation of thriving families, strong communities, and resilient generations. Throughout tribal communities, both urban and rural, mothers and birthing people deserve access to compassionate, culturally responsive, and high-quality care before, during, and after pregnancy. Yet disparities in access, outcomes, and support systems persist, making coordinated, informed action more important than ever.

Within these pages, you will find curated resources, communication strategies, and implementation guidance designed to strengthen systems of care and empower those on the front lines of maternal health work. This toolkit recognizes that maternal health extends beyond clinical care, it encompasses mental and behavioral health, social determinants of health, traditional knowledge, family support systems, and community leadership.

This guide was developed by the MMPIC Program at the Southern Plains Tribal Health Board (SPTHB). Correspondence concerning this toolkit should be addressed to SPTHB.
