As the ministry of St. Philip’s continues its march towards a centennial year, our body of believers must take caution. The caution I am referring to is not related to external forces. As we reflect on the mighty works of God through us and St. Philip’s, we

must elude the conspiracy of silence. Meaning, as we continue in our quickness to serve, we must remain slow to assume credit.
As you read this winter edition of our 1600 Magazine, you’ll find undeniable evidence of our effectiveness and unparalleled impact on lives. However, if we fail to give credit where credit is due, we will contribute to the conspiracy of silence. To avoid this under sight and arrogance, we should proclaim TGBTG (To God Be the Glory)!
There is no other credible explanation for what has unfolded over our 75-year existence on these anointed South Dallas soils. Admittedly, committed parents, devoted staff, incredible volunteers,
generous donors, and tenacious hard work have attributed to our current progress and positioned St. Philip’s for its path forward…BUT GOD…..!
God has always been the explanation for what has and is continuing to happen through St. Philip’s. He consistently blesses the diligent works of our hands and hearts. In reading this issue of the 1600 Magazine, join me in lifting every voice to proclaim TGBTG. To God Be the Glory for the things He has done. Let’s also praise Him in advance for what He has in store for the ministry. We are deeply grateful for all who’ve played a role in educating, serving, uplifting, inspiring, and loving others toward overcoming, defying odds, and pursuing their destinies. We are a faithful chorus, lifting a joyful noise to God’s Glory.

PREPARE TO LAUNCH!
To God be the Glory!! As the school year began, we excitedly welcomed back 240 students to in-person learning. This incredible growth to our student body - the largest enrollment in eleven years - is supported by the notion that families sought out St. Philip’s School and Community Center with the direct intention to partner with them in educating their children. The school’s emphasis on a Love of God, Love of learning, Love of self, and a Love of others is resonating with many...especially, in these unprecedented times.
I am ecstatic to share that we will be launching 7th & 8th grade over the next two years, thus extending our already excellent program, and establishing a true preschool through middle school educational journey at St. Philip’s. This has been a long time coming! The middle school program will prepare our scholars to meet or exceed the highest academic standards while cultivating the strength of character necessary to change this world and enrich their communities through their actions. Our scholars will use their God-given gifts to serve with empathy, responsibility, and inspire through leadership. Students will engage in a comprehensive, intentional course of study that prepares students for a college preparatory high school.
Highlights of our future middle school program include:
• 7th and 8th graders will experience a curriculum that empowers them to be courageous and collaborative servant leaders. Scholars will interact with community partners and be immersed in an exploratory and challenging curriculum.
• The expansion of our Performing and Fine Arts program will allow scholars to further develop their artistic gifts, be innovative thinkers, and
engage in active and purposeful learning.
• Our Entrepreneurship and Innovation course will allow students to be curious and strategic problem solvers who test boundaries and develop solutions.
• Our Leadership program will prepare students to be innovative in their thinking, Christcentered in their beliefs, and empathetic in their decisions.
• As a project-based learning school, students will identify, through research, a real-world problem (local to global), developing its solution using evidence to support the claim, and present solutions.
While we don’t know all that God has prepared for this ministry, we can boldly say without a shadow of a doubt that Great things, do indeed, lie ahead for St. Philip’s and the children and families we so proudly serve.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ON THE HORIZON
This past year has been nothing short of a miracle. After enduring a harrowing year with the ongoing pandemic, we persevered to continue providing an affordable and unparalleled educational experience to our students. With so many unexpected circumstances, extensive planning has gone into the continual longevity of the legacy that is and will continue to be St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Our launch of 7th and 8th grade over the next two years will extend our impact and programs to more students in the southern sector.
This expansion is one parents, donors, and community members have asked of us for close to two decades. Embarking on this new chapter will better position our alumni to matriculate to other ISAS private schools after graduating from St. Philip’s. It also solidifies St. Philip’s as the only faith-based PK through 8th grade private school in South Dallas.
Our esteemed Perot Family Headmaster, Dr. Terry J. Flowers, and George T. Lee, Jr. Principal, Kellee Murrell, are embarking on a journey that positions our school to continue the great work of transforming our community and world by FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE. To make this transition one of ease and excellence, St. Philip’s welcomes Dr. Shaunaisea M. Henderson, who will serve as the new 7th and 8th grade Program Director. Dr. Henderson has been in education for 26 years, serving in an array of capacities from teacher, writing specialist, instructional coach, principal, chief academic officer, and educational consultant. Her experience and expertise come at a time that St. Philip’s needs it most.
Dr. Henderson believes in the power and necessity of a middle school addition. She understands middle school has the capacity to help our students remain on the trajectory of excellence St. Philip’s sets for its students. On her excitement about this new change, Dr. Henderson says, “middle School, [is] a journey that will advance all students to reach their goals, be confidently brave, and believe in the remarkable destination of success.”
St. Philip’s is overjoyed at this new and exciting change that will begin to take place within the next year. Parents and students alike are enthusiastic! It is the hope and priority of our school to continue to provide an unparalleled education positioning our students to succeed.

St. Philip’s School and Community Center believes in the power of education and the wonderful cohesion of an academic, emotional, and spiritual foundation. There’s a big BUZZ on campus! Thanks to the generosity Capital One, St. Philip’s had a beehive installed on its campus in September. Over the next , an urban beekeeping company, will provide beekeepers and lead this exciting new program to encourage our students and neighbors to fall in love with bees, build ecological awareness, and in time, create a more sustainable community.
The beehive offers a unique expansion to our STEM offerings and science program, ensuring students receive hands on observation and interaction with nature and the science of beekeeping. An added bonus -- students will be able to harvest the honey to share with
EXPANDING THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT AT ST. PHILIP’S
St. Philip’s has created and implemented new changes to its already vast and unique tutoring and academic support program. A small group Interventionist for Math and ELAR/Reading was added to the faculty, serving over 46 students in small groups on a weekly basis. This position, made possible with generous support from the Eugene McDermott Foundation and Hamon Charitable Foundation, was able to support St. Philip’s students in grades Pk4-6th grade.
This year, we offered services for students identified with characteristics of dyslexia, giving these students and their parents better tools to cope, understand, and continue learning and thriving in a safe and nurturing environment. St. Philip’s academic support services addresses the needs of students with Dyslexia, ADHD, and some speech challenges. Educational evaluations are also provided. The scope of our tutoring and academic support program is expanding to ensure St. Philip’s is able to reach and empower every child where they are, no matter their learning level and ability.
We are ecstatic to also share the establishment of the Landin Family Reading Specialist made possible by Rebecca and Rob Landin. This generous gift will ensure quality of leadership for the Academic Support Program in perpetuity.
STUDENTS THRIVING IN NEW AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
For over 10 years, St. Philip’s afterschool and summer programs have positively impacted hundreds of children. This year, St. Philip’s is excited to partner with Champions to bring the young people we serve exceptional afterschool programming. Champions is closely connected to the KinderCare family and partners with numerous schools throughout the country to provide before- and after-school programming.

o SEL (Social Emotional Learning) activities and curriculum
At St. Philip’s, we understand afterschool programming is necessary to the social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development of our students. Partnering with Champions allows us to do this effectively, while also providing a safe and supportive atmosphere for the children we serve to thrive.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION: ST. PHILIP’S I-LAB
St. Philip’s Innovation Lab (I-Lab), home to robotics, interactive technology, and other S.T.E.M. instruction on campus, is undergoing expansion and renovation. Texas Instruments has provided a donation towards the procurement of a muralist who will design a oneof-a-kind mural in the I-Lab, a favorite space for students prior to the pandemic. The stimulating and beautifully designed mural will further foster an environment of creativity and experimenting that comes with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
In addition, board member, Rev. Paul Rasmussen and Highland Park United Methodist Church will underwrite renovation costs to ensure a proper facelift for this dynamic space that will be utilized by both students, after school care participants, and summer camp scholars. Science Faculty Lead, Tia Stevens, manages this dynamic learning space that will be ready for full usage next school year.

WECREATION CENTER OPENS
AT ST. PHILIP'S
After years of planning, patience, and building renovation, St. Philip’s WeCreation Center - a unique extension of our Community Center programming – has finally opened. Located in a renovated 2,500 square foot building that was once an operating neighborhood lounge and liquor related business, WeCreation offers an open collaborative space for non-profits, businesses, and individuals to host programs and events that align with the center’s vision of being a site for community based human design, capacity building, and makerspace projects. We look forward to seeing the impact this new tangible resource will make in South Dallas and the southern sector.
AUNT BETTE’S COMMUNITY PANTRY SERVES AS A ONE STOP SHOP FOR COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE
In Dallas County alone, there are over 360,000 people who are food insecure. Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry serves as a beacon of hope as we stand against hunger in our community. Since the beginning of the pandemic, our pantry has operated as a drive-through pick-up for low-income clients. We currently serve over 750 households, 1,800+ individuals, and distribute 700,000 pounds of food annually, thus making a significant impact on the nutritional needs of our most vulnerable neighbors.

Of late, Aunt Bette’s has expanded to serve not only as a place of refuge for food-insecure families, but as a trusted resource for other social services and assistance. This includes access to DART Go-Link programs, shoe and diaper giveaways, vaccine registrations, job fairs, and much more. These additional resources are provided in collaboration with several St. Philip’s partner organizations to ensure a holistic provision of support to our pantry clients.
DRIVE THRU THANKSGIVING MEAL FEEDS HUNDREDS
This was the second year we hosted a drive through Thanksgiving meal to safely serve our community and abide by Covid-19 precautions. St. Philip’s partnered with MW Logistics who provided hens, fresh produce, canned goods and dairy products to add to each Thanksgiving meal. Over 400 families drove through Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry to receive their food donations to enjoy a hearty meal. We are grateful to MW Logistics and our volunteers with the Dallas Spurs, Liverpool Supporters Clubs , who orchestrated this vital event.
DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR FAITHFUL MEN AND WOMEN: OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS STORE SERVES 500+ FAMILIES
We are fortunate to be change agents in South Dallas, providing warm hearts and big smiles on Christmas morning
With the lingering negative impact of the pandemic and economy on our immediate neighbors, St. Philip’s Annual Community Christmas Store is needed now more than ever. Last December, we served 500 families (twice as many from prior years) through this dignified Christmas “shopping” program. This trend of tremendous need continues. Job loss, reduced household income, and lack of resources is a reality for many in South Dallas.
Thankfully, we can depend on many faithful friends and supporters to ensure our responsiveness to our struggling neighbors. St. Philip’s is a recipient of the WFAA Channel 8 Santa’s Helpers program, and also receives toys, clothing, and other items donated by volunteers, board members, partner organizations, and school families to help stock the store. In fact, Saint Michael and All Angels Church members, alone, provided over 500 new coats to be distributed through the Christmas store this year! We continue to be grateful to the Junior League of Dallas for their engagement, as the Christmas Store has been a Provisional Project for their organization for the past 10 years. Though times may be tough for many in our community, we are fortunate to be change agents in South Dallas, providing warm hearts and big smiles on Christmas morning for many.

It’s St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s DIAMOND anniversary! What a momentous moment for this dynamic ministry, with its humble and purposed beginning 75 years ago through the establishment of Dallas’ first Black Episcopalian parish – St. Philip’s Church.
It has been a unique and astounding evolution – from a church (1940s), to a youth center (1950s), to a school (1970s), and a community development resource (1980s). We are all these things and so much more; with our founding in FAITH being the solid foundation on which St. Philip’s stands and continues to expand.
Thirty-eight years of consistent, visionary leadership through Dr. Terry J. Flowers, first as the school’s principal and now as Perot Family Headmaster, has played a pivotal role in broadening the reach and scope of this blessed institution. One, that many deem a “lighthouse of hope” in South Dallas and a true model for inner city education and community transformation.
We’ve come so far in how we educate children, ensure a healthy and thriving neighborhood, and serve residents of our community. Where FAITH is our foundation, EDUCATION and SERVICE, are the branches that have intentionally extended God’s love into the lives of thousands of families over the years. This not only includes those we serve but those who so willingly choose to serve and share with St. Philip’s
School and Community Center through their leadership, volunteerism, monetary gifts, and dedicated tenure as faculty or staff.
Strategic collaboration has been a critical component to our success. Since St. Philip’s genesis, our spirit of collaboration has been deliberately imbued with cross cultural, cross racial, cross economic, and cross demographic partnerships. As an institution and ministry, we intentionally work to build bridges through this important work. We recognize the strength of being “different, together” in realizing a collective vision to transform our community and world through FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE. At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Dallas, harmony abounds for the sake of helping, healing, and celebrating our shared humanity.
In these first seven decades, we bear witness to hundreds of school alumni who are now shaping our community and world for the better through their gifts and productive citizenship; we bear witness to the thousands of young athletes who gleaned athletic, leadership, and life skills on our courts and fields; we bear witness to the hundreds of children and youth who now live purposed, meaningful lives as a testament to the encouragement, mentoring, and support received through our Community Center programs; we bear witness to the hundreds of neighbors who are beginning to flourish due to the nutritional, medical, and social services we provide; and we bear witness to a community emerging from decades of neglect and redlining, into one that thrives due to our collaborative neighborhood development efforts.
And finally, four major capital campaigns over the last three decades have thrust St. Philip’s into various stages of expansion and growth. The most recent of which –WE BELIEVE – being the boldest, most multifaceted, and impactful, is drawing to a close! Through We Believe’s efforts to raise $50 million in critical funds to grow the endowment, Annual Fund, and expand its campus and programs, St. Philip’s is better positioned for sustainability and tremendous transformation within the walls of the school and throughout the community we choose to call home.

ATHLETICS RETURNS TO ST. PHILIP’S
The Saints are back! Our athletic program returned to full swing this summer after the pandemic caused our organization to put this multi-faceted program on hold for over a year, to ensure the safety of our young athletes, staff, and volunteers. Football and cheer were the first sports to open registration. This year, four football teams returned to operation. This included Flag, 8U, 10U, and 12U.
Our Saints Cheerleaders returned in a big way, taking home major wins in the USAYL Cheer & Dance Competition hosted at St. Philip’s on November 14. These talented young girls, ages 4 – 12 years old, took home 1st and 3rd place. They worked tirelessly to achieve such an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to the girls, their amazing coaches, and parents for the time and effort put into making this season a success.
In addition to football and cheer, volleyball is making its comeback at St. Philip’s with a girls' volleyball clinic held in November. Participants learned all about serving, passing, setting, and other basics to understand the game of volleyball. Twenty girls, ages 6-12, enjoyed the day of skills and fun.
SUMMER CAMPS OFFERED A WELCOMED WARM UP FOR FALL SPORTS
The Dallas Cowboys hosted a free football camp at our campus on Saturday, July 10th. Over 50 boys and girls participated in the camp, receiving individual and group coaching from current and former NFL players. The young athletes, ages 6-13, learned lessons in teamwork, dedication, and character.
St. Philip’s was excited to host over 100 young ballers from all over the D/FW in a two- week summer basketball camp with Damien Mobley, Head Coach for James Madison High School. Boys and girls, ages 6-14, were taught the basics of the game from dribbling to passing, layups, and more! The camp ended with the ultimate slam dunk --an inspirational message from Spud Webb, former NBA player and St. Philip’s ambassador. Webb supports strong athletic programs in inner city communities like St. Philip’s, many of whom remind him of those that shaped him growing up in Dallas in the 70's.

ST. PHILIP’S ALUMNUS, JEREMY WINSTON, RECRUITED BY PROFESSIONAL LACROSSE TEAM
The St. Philip's alumni network will soon be adding a professional athlete to its ranks. In August of this year, Jeremy Winston (Class of 2011) heard his name called by the Halifax Thunderbirds in the fifth round of the 26th National Lacrosse League Draft.
Jeremy’s journey began in elementary school at St. Philip’s, where he was a member of the Saints’ lacrosse team. He credits the Saints lacrosse program for introducing him to the sport he would fall in love with. Upon his graduation from St. Philip’s, Jeremy went on to attend Parish Episcopal School, where he would catch the attention of Division-1 college coaches across the nation. He would then go on to commit to Jacksonville University, where he accumulated nearly 60 goals across four seasons. In addition to his athletic achievements, Jeremy has excelled in the classroom. He recently completed a degree in Sociology with a minor in Criminology and hopes to one day work in Medical Sales.
The biggest thing I learned from St. Philip’s was the importance of respect.
When asked about the role St. Philip’s has played in his journey to becoming a professional athlete and an exceptional student, Jeremy said that he would not be in his current position had it not been for the values he cultivated in South Dallas: “The biggest thing I learned from St. Philip’s was the importance of respect.” Jeremy also emphasizes the importance of St. Philip’s black history-centric curriculum: “The amount of black history we learned helped me keep my eyes open at a really young age.”
Jeremy is currently using his extra season of athletic eligibility at Jacksonville University, while also pursuing a graduate degree and preparing for the Halifax Thunderbirds upcoming training camp
KOBE BOYCE SHINES ON THE FIELD AND IN THE CLASSROOM
While attending St. Philip’s, Kobe Boyce (Class of 2011) was a member of the football, basketball, lacrosse, and track teams. He credits his former coaches with being exceptional at developing young talent while emphasizing the importance of having fun: “Schematically, there’s not a lot to teach kids at that age. The St. Philip’s coaches were good at building on our natural strengths and letting us maximize our potential at that young age…”
After graduating in 2011, Kobe went on to attend Shelton School and Lake Dallas High School. He made football his primary sport and quickly rose up recruiting ranks. Kobe ultimately committed to the University of Texas over schools such as Oklahoma University, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, and many more.
One of Kobe’s fondest memories as a student at St. Philip’s was winning the Sunshine Award, given to a student who spreads joy and naturally brightens up a room. This experience, coupled with the life lessons he learned from his teachers, taught him to value his true self and continue to spread positivity.
Today, Kobe is working on finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas and aspires to become a coach after college. As a coach, Kobe wishes to instill his athletes with the same life lessons he learned at St. Philip’s.

Mariah Burdette, valedictorian of St. Philip’s Class of 2013, a graduate of Bishop Dunne Catholic School, gave the 2021 commencement address to the graduating 6th Graders of the Class of 2021. Below are a few powerful excerpts from her presentation:
“Sixth grade, you must set goals no matter how impossible they may appear. This alone however is not enough. The second chapter and eleventh verse of James in the Bible says – Faith without works is dead. In order to achieve these goals, you must put actions behind your words and pursue these dreams relentlessly. It is only through hard work and dedication that great achievements become possible. Now, these big goals may appear frightening at times. But what truly matters is not how much the goal frightens you, it’s how you rise up and conquer your fears to achieve things you’ve only dreamed of. Remember, with a great amount of consistency and determination, anything is possible.”

McKenzie Morgan, Class of 2021 – 7th grader at Bishop Dunne Catholic School
Recent graduate and alumna, McKenzie Morgan is thriving at her new school with help from the lessons she received at St. Philip’s. “One of the many things I’ve learned from my time at St. Philip’s, that has been very important in my new environment, is to never dim my light or suppress who I am as an individual. Most importantly, the faculty, staff, parents, and teachers of St. Philip’s taught me the immeasurable value of the power of God and his son Jesus Christ.”
In addition to her positive attitude, she has immersed herself in sports and cultural clubs at Bishop Dunne Catholic School. “I am currently in my last season of volleyball for the semester and am a part of the African American Awareness Club, a club that highlights African American leaders, and prominent holidays celebrated and fought for by African American leaders throughout the school.”
McKenzie continues to navigate the new halls and atmosphere with grace and her strong faith. “My experience at Bishop Dunne thus far is great. I am still adjusting to the changes and the new policies, but so far, it’s been an amazing experience. I’m learning how to apply my love for Christ and His love for me, as I would not be who I am or where I am without Him and His presence.”
Jack Honeyman, Class of 2019 – 9th grader at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing & Visual Arts
You know you attend a performing arts school because there’s always a buzz in the air. It’s one of the reasons Jack is really enjoying his freshman year. “I love it! The great thing about Booker T. is that something is always going on. It's also great that everyone is creative. You get to see great costumes and spontaneous performances down the hallway.”
Jack is in the Theatre Conservatory and a member of the Asian Student Union and Music Club. He’s also involved in the Gospel Choir and will be performing in the Ten-Minute Plays in December.
He recalls his time at St. Philip’s with fond memories and lessons to last a lifetime. “I love St. Philip’s. The best part of the school is the people, the community. I'll never find a community with as many extraordinary people as
there are at St. Philip's. They taught me that you're never alone, even if you think you are. They accept me and love me with open arms. They make school feel comfortable and safe, and it's one of the few places that I call home.”
“St. Philip’s taught me to accept everyone as they are and to look past the face-value of a person and see their dimensions. They also taught me about time management and hard work. Finally, St. Philip’s taught me to be curious and to ask questions: specifically, the ones people like to ignore.”
COLLEGE MOVES
Nina Edwards is one of eight new students in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS) at Prairie View A&M College, selected for the United States Department of Agriculture’s 1890 National Scholars Program. She graduated from Mansfield Lake Ridge High School in May 2021. She is a finance major and was named a USDA/1890 Scholar. As an incoming Freshman, Nina received a full scholarship to earn a degree in an agricultural-related discipline and work within the government upon graduation. As such, she was selected by the USDA Forest Service - National Civil Rights Office.
“I am so blessed that I was able to receive an education at St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Not only did the school help me academically, but it also helped me grow spiritually. The staff and administration greatly assisted me in my journey; they are the reason I had so much exposure and opportunities. I would have not had it any other way, I am thankful for my St. Philip’s Village.”
Her mother, Nickisha Fowler, shares similar sentiments about her experience as an alumni parent. “St. Philip’s was definitely an experience and family oriented. Parents may not see the immediate benefits, but the lifelong impact cannot even be put into words.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
He graduated college in the middle of the pandemic but that didn’t stop alumnus, Jacob Gonzalez , Class of 2010, from making the most of his career and path forward. After graduating from the Episcopal School of Dallas, he matriculated to St. Edward’s University and earned a BBA in Finance in 2020.
Jacob’s love for the stock market and trading led him to pursue a career in finance. “My curiosity for the stock market led me to want to learn more about banking and its role in the economy.” He is currently an Analyst at JP Morgan Chase & Co, Commercial Banking, Product Strategy.
At a young age, St. Philip’s encouraged him to make a place for himself in and out of the classroom.
“ St. Philip’s helped harness my love for numbers at a really young age. I was part of the math team and was lucky enough to go to state in 5th and 6th grade. It also helped me find my voice. As the only Hispanic kid in my class, it was easy to focus on the differences between my classmates and me, but through awesome teachers, friends, and staff, I learned to celebrate what people have in common rather than focusing on the differences. Along those lines, I participated in the spelling bee, performed a rap song in front of the entire school, and the poetry contest. This helped me learn how much I love public speaking.”
The sky is the limit as Jacob shared his plans, despite the challenges of navigating such a unique time in history. “I graduated in the middle of the pandemic which made work a little tough, but I’ve loved every moment of it. In the last year, I started an Alumni Association for Bridge Lacrosse, which I participated in during my time at St. Philip’s. I plan on staying in Dallas for the foreseeable future. In the future, I hope to find my way into the NBA as a General Manager, President of Basketball Operation, or an executive role (way down the line).”
The lessons he learned at St. Philip’s were multi-
faceted with memories full of both joy and fun but also historical lessons. “My favorite memory is the 6th grade field trip we took to the Grand Canyon. All the boys got in trouble for throwing acorns at one another. It was a really memorable trip.” “Finally, St. Philip’s showed me the dark history of the US that many tend to ignore. Through the 5th grade Civil Rights trip, I was able to learn and appreciate the true history of America.”

In August, Tolleson Wealth Management participated in a food and supply drive to support Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry. Tolleson Wealth Management contributed approximately $3,000 in online donations and 2,000 pantry items and products for individuals and families who receive support from the Pantry. Tolleson Wealth has participated on a yearly basis in support of St. Philip’s with various volunteer opportunities since 2019.
EY spent a Friday morning on November 9, helping prep our campus for St. Philip’s Ribbon Cutting & Unveiling event. These wonderful volunteers, with excitement and a drive to work, rearranged furniture for the Landin Family Literacy Library where tutoring is held, shelved books in the Trammell Crow Library, helped plant flowers at the front of our building, and spent time virtually reading books to our students! The time and effort they invested in just one day, will be remembered by students, faculty and staff.
Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD)
The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD) students volunteered in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry stocking and sorting items for individuals and families in the community. Students also spent time helping put food in neighbors’ vehicles. During this volunteer opportunity, we received 200 sports balls (footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs) and other athletic items for the Christmas Store. The ESD volunteer team also delivered Christmas boxes to senior citizens in the community.

ST. PHILIP’S ADOPTS A 10 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN
St. Philip’s School and Community Center acknowledges former trustees, John Kiser and Kathy Hubbard, for leading the development of a new 10-year Strategic Plan. Due to their hard work and dedication, staff of SPSCC, volunteers, and board members came together to develop and implement a unique roadmap that respects and engages board and staff’s strengths & fosters collaboration, accountability, and transparency.
This plan, which was enthusiastically adopted by the current board of trustees, asks and addresses the questions, “Who will St. Philip’s be in the future?” and “How can we grow into a better version of what exists now?” Divided into pillars, the strategies developed dive deep into the moving parts of our school and community center. The vision and deliberate planning of this strategic plans opens more doors for greater expansion for St. Philip’s and the students and families we serve.

CUTTING & UNVEILING HIGHLIGHTS
On November 18, St. Philip’s leadership and the Philanthropy Team hosted donors, partners, and friends to celebrate the grand opening of newly constructed and renovated spaces on our growing campus. The following were unveiled: Maclin Family Legacy Building, Rees-Jones Welcome Center, Dallas Stars Early Childhood Playground, WeCreation Center, Trammel Crow Library, and Landin Family Literacy Library. The ribbon-cutting featured The Honorable Mike Rawlings and included campus tours for visitors and friends to see the beautiful new upgrades on our campus.
NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY – OUR MVPs SCORED BIG!
The unrivaled support of our donors propelled us toward the finish line and helped us score big for North Texas Giving Day. This year’s campaign was the most fruitful yet and we thank you for getting in the game and helping us exceed our $150,000 fundraising goal. and the members of Friends of St. Philip’s held its inaugural fundraiser Bingo, BBQ, & the Blues on Wednesday, November 3rd in the Snyder Activity Center at St. Philip’s. The auxiliary volunteer group raised $147,000 to support the mission and programs of St. Philip’s, specifically to support out of classroom experiences and impactful social services. The festive evening was filled with wonderful fellowship, delicious barbecue, and included live music by Blues musician, Sam Johnston of Nashville, TN. The event featured ten games of bingo, six amazing raffle packages, and was co-emceed by NBC 5 news anchor Laura Harris and Chris Arnold, Voice of the Mavs. The special occasion was enjoyed by over 300 guests and friends of SPSCC. Bravo to the leadership and Host Committee for weathering many date and venue changes. They faced many challenges to make this night a huge success for all involved. St. Philip’s is blessed to have such dedicated volunteers and friends.

CLARENCE BROWN III (1968 – 2021)
St. Philip’s wraps its loving arms around the family of loyal friend and We Believe Campaign cabinet member, Clarence B. Brown, III. The Killeen, Texas native was born to a family of educators and was a devoted father and husband to Evan, Ryan and Lily and their mother Shonn, a former SPSCC trustee. Though Clarence was an only child, he was never alone, making friends easily and maintaining those friendships throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed a notable career as an attorney, providing legal counsel to technology and start-up companies. Clarence truly believed that education was a great equalizer and that enhancing opportunities for children of color, particularly Black children, would be the key to narrowing the achievement gap in our society. His presence as an active supporter of our ministry and community will be greatly missed. Many families will be enriched by Clarence’s legacy through numerous gifts made in his memory over the last several months.
CHARLES HILLMAN JR. (1954 – 2021)
Our prayers are with the Hillman family, El Hajj Malik, his sister and mother, in the passing of their dear father and husband. Charles, an alumni parent, was a well-known community activist and artist. His friends remember him as a man of principle, passion, and purpose. He was an incredibly talented actor. He lived out his purpose and calling to advocate for Black Americans while also thriving in his acting career. All who knew him will attest to the mark he left on the communities and the City of Dallas. He was always out front, doing his best to assure America's promise to African-Americans was kept. A true Civil Rights champion and victor! May his big heart and laughter live on in the hearts of many!
MONA MUNSON (1936 – 2021)
St. Philip’s sends its sincerest condolences to the Munson family in the passing of their beloved matriarch, Mona, a loving mother, wife, and daughter. A graduate of the Hockaday School and Wellesley College, Mona was a member and supporter of various notable Dallas organizations. She was a generous donor and loyal friend of St. Philip’s for over 40 years. Her friends and family remember her as a kind woman with a loving heart and giving spirit. She leaves a beautiful legacy of kindness, grace, and generosity with the St. Philip’s community.
GONZALO SAY CHAY (1970 – 2021)
Our deepest prayers are extended to the Say family – Armando, Estefanie, Leyda, Arnoldo and Marta – in the passing of their father and husband. Mr. Say was a dedicated servant leader and alumni parent at St. Philip's School and Community Center for 20 years. Not only was he a key lead member of the operations team, but he was a helping hand around homes of our faculty, staff, and neighbors. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile and willingness to help. His presence will be missed dearly.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE PEROT FAMILY HEADMASTER
Every good thing that comes to St. Philip’s School and Community Center comes from God. This is especially true as it relates to the people and partners who choose to join us in this important, noble work of transforming the community and our world by FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE, through the sharing of their time as volunteers and the sharing of their economic resources as donors.
The 2020-2021 fiscal year for St. Philip’s was an awesome reminder of God’s hand in all we do. In spite of a world pandemic, a destructive winter storm, and the myriad of challenges that stemmed from both, St. Philip’s persevered, even thrived. Much of this was due to our volunteer leadership. I thank God for our 2020 – 2021 Board of Trustees , led by Chairman, David Cowling , and Vice Chairman, Tim Weil, and Treasurer, Melissa Orth, who had the foresight and judiciousness to trim our operating budget as we continued to prioritize the provision of our core educational and social service programs, in the midst of our changing world and our necessary “pivot.” This strategic act helped ensure an achievable fundraising goal and allowed St. Philip’s to strengthen its relationship with volunteers and donors who wanted to see our School successfully transition to virtual and hybrid learning, to see Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry remain open and responsive to the growing food insecurity needs of our neighbors, and to witness our community of believers collaborate in breathtaking ways all for “the good” of those who serve and are served by this mighty ministry.
I also thank God for our Foundation Board , led by longtime friend and partner, Dan Stansbury, Jr. , who so diligently invest and manage gifts and contributions to support the long-term goals, purposes, and objectives of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. The endowment has grown tremendously over the last six years –directly a result of the efforts of the We Believe Campaign – and currently has assets over $25 million!
I would be remiss to overlook our We Believe Campaign Cabinet , spearheaded by the power trio of Bill Lively (Co-Chair), Roland Parrish (Co-Chair), and Dr. Bobby Lyle (Honorary Chair), who took the baton passed to them to dash to the Campaign finish line during this period. They made tremendous progress, once again, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Much appreciation is also sent to the Friends of St. Philip’s auxiliary led by Paula Mitchell. Our “friends” so thoughtfully, diligently, and consistently showered our faculty and staff with lovely gestures of gifts, treats, and experiences throughout a difficult year to inspire morale. For that we are truly thankful.
Finally, on behalf of our dedicated faculty, staff, and every child, every family, and every neighbor impacted by our ministry, I extend my sincerest appreciation and gratitude to everyone listed in this Annual Report (reflecting contributions made between July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021) who were so moved to open your hearts and wallets to St. Philip’s…particularly in these unprecedented times.
