A Word From the Perot Family Headmaster

St. Philip’s Gives Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Dr. Barbara Cambridge

We are humbled that when God created Dr. Barbara Cambridge, he knew she would pray, probe, push, promote, and persist for the promise of the ministry of St. Philip’s and would have a mighty impact on many lives.

In the celebrated poem, "The Creation," renown poet James Weldon Johnson beautifully interprets and retells life’s beginnings. It opens with God reflecting on the emptiness of space and the recognition of His loneliness. In doing so, He decides to make the world. Johnson goes on to describe how God took things from darkness, cast the stars, made the moon, sun, along with the water and the creatures of the sea, land, and sky. “And God said, That’s good.” Johnson ends the historic work with: “This great God, Like a mammy bending over her baby, Kneeled down in the dust, Toiling over a lump of clay, Till he shaped it in is His own image; Then into it he blew the breath of life, And man became a living soul. Amen. Amen.”

James Weldon Johnson died June 26, 1938, yet, the story of creation did not end with him. Four months after the death of James Weldon Johnson, I believe God looked at the advancements of humanity and the conditions of the world and said, “I’m not satisfied, I’ll make Barbara Cambridge.” God knew He was sending her to a racially challenged yet promise-filled city in Texas called Dallas. When Barbara found her way to South Dallas, I am convinced God said, “That’s good.”

In a blink of an eye, God allowed Barbara and a faithful crew to seed a ministry in South Dallas through the establishment of a church called St. Philip’s. And God said, “That’s good.” Barbara Cambridge and the church members looked at the needs of the community and the church congregation dug into the depths of their resources and joined with other Episcopalian friends to fuel the fires of their passion; launching an athletic program for youth in the neighborhood. And God said, “That’s good.”

When America decided that God was no longer welcome in its schools, God turned to Barbara Cambridge and her church members and friends and said let’s make a school where it’s okay to pray and make an A. Through God’s grace, they founded St. Philip’s School and Community Center. And God is still saying “That’s good.”

We are humbled that when God created Dr. Barbara Cambridge, he knew she would pray, probe, push, promote, and persist for the promise of the ministry of St. Philip’s and would have a mighty impact on many lives.

As with the two fish and the five loaves, God led Dr. Cambridge to become an angel against hunger in our Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry where she was a devoted volunteer. God looks at the over 650 families that are served annually and says, “That’s good.” Two years ago, God caused Dr. Cambridge to look beyond her time here on earth and to help all of us ensure what God considers to be GOOD continues to bless lives, by helping to establish the Cambridge Giving Circle. She committed to a planned gift and encouraged others to join her. She also led by example to assist food insecure families through her volunteerism in the food pantry.

Thanks be to God that at St. Philip’s, it is still okay to pray and make an A. Thanks be to God our athletic teams can continue to pray before they play. Thanks be to God for sending us Dr. Barbara Cambridge! Her teachings and spirit are with

us today. She showed us how to be hostages of hope, to do justice, and to love mercy. She showed us how to make our faith our fuel for life. Most of all, Dr. Cambridge taught us how to talk to God with the patented “Good Morning God, We Love You!!” Because of life eternal, Dr. Cambridge lives on and she has now made us all rich. We are rich because our memories of her are now transformed into treasures.

I have no doubt, that she is now in glory with our Maker who orchestrated and reviewed her time amongst us and proclaimed, “That’s Good!”

Blessings, Dr. Terry J. Flowers

A Word From The George T. Lee, Jr. Principal Stepping Into Excellence

St. Philip’s School and Community Center has a long tradition of excellence. Excellence in education is exemplified not only in our curriculum but in our student outcomes. As we embark on this new school year, our theme - STEPPING INTO EXCELLENCE - reminds us of our mission to our students and our community. The heart of our curriculum supports our mission of transforming the world through Faith, Education, and Service. We ensure that we teach with excellence so our students develop into leaders that have a love for God, love of self, and love for learning as a result of their educational experiences here at St. Philip’s.

Our holistic approach to education allows students to develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, artistically, creatively and spiritually.

Our excellence in teaching is facilitated by our faculty who provide a unique and innovative approach to educating children. As our students prepare for a global society, we focus on the five C’s, Critical thinking and Problem Solving, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation, and Christ-likeness. Students are challenged to think critically through our advanced curriculum and project/problem-based learning. Our holistic approach to education allows students to develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, artistically, creatively and spiritually. Our emphasis in the performing and fine arts and our innovation/maker space lab, give our students the creative outlets to express themselves.

Providing an excellent experience for our students begins with the faculty but is also evident in our overall curriculum. The curriculum allows our students to develop a solid foundation and appreciation for cultural diversity, with a specific emphasis on African-American culture and history. Additionally, each aspect of our curriculum from our core curriculum to our academic excursions and our fine arts programming, are designed for our students to develop as Christ-centered servant leaders that exude confidence in and out of the classroom.

This 2019-2020 school year, our students and school community will step and progress forward in sync and on one accord, as we continue providing students an unparalleled, excellent education.

The Dallas Stars are Shining Brightly at St. Philip’s!

After announcing its five-year $2 million pledge to St. Philip’s School and Community Center this past spring, the Dallas Stars have been ever-present on St. Philip’s campus. Theirs is a precious partnership in constant motion, much like a hockey game, minus the aggression. Over the past six months, the Dallas Stars have helped expand St. Philip’s afterschool care program offerings; hosted a field day of dreams for our students; connected St. Philip’s to the “Badges on the Blue Line” program; staff have volunteered regularly in Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry; and players have led several hockey clinics with students and Community Center youth.

Additionally, it has been a joy and inspiration to witness the Dallas Stars Foundation President, Marty Turco, at most of these gatherings. Turco’s passion for St. Philip's mission, vision, and community is contagious and a beautiful testament to servant leadership! St. Philip’s is blessed to engage with The Dallas Stars in such a dynamic way. We look forward to seeing how our partnership continues to unfold in the coming year.

Welcome to the Ministry!

We welcome new faces and departments as St. Philip’s continues to grow to meet the needs of our school and community. We’re excited about the new Experience Department, led by Chief Experience Officer, Candance Conerly. Comprised of our Admissions, Human Resource, Operations, and Communications teams, this department will focus on ensuring that everyone we serve internally and externally has a stellar St. Philip’s experience. Regina Walton joins us as the Human Resources Manager along with new Communication team member Courtney Lewis, Communications Specialist.

This summer, we formed a Community Advancement Department, led by Chief Community Advancement Officer, Julie Saqueton. This Department consists of the Community Center, Athletics, and our Community Development team that welcomed a new staff member, Tearod Robertson, who leads Business Development projects for St. Philip’s.

We’ll be stepping into excellence with these new faculty members. AT A GLANCE: COMMUNITY IMPACT

Community Advancement: Equitable Revitalization

We have reached a critical inflection point in ensuring the equitable future of the South Dallas community St. Philip’s calls home. We recognize that a person’s zip code is the most powerful single predictor of health and economic opportunity. Healthy neighborhoods create opportunity pathways for people of all backgrounds, while poor neighborhoods, like ours, function more like swamps than launching pads, destabilizing families and contributing to outcomes such as poor health, toxic stress, violence, hunger, and financial insecurity.

Through our strategic Community Advancement efforts, St. Philip’s is committed to addressing concentrated poverty through equitable development that ultimately “fosters places that are vibrant, healthy and diverse through comprehensive strategies that benefit all members of the community.” For many, the bedrock of equitable development is meaningful community ownership of such efforts, fueled by investments that are catalytic, coordinated, and result in a triple bottom line. This is why St. Philip’s current community development efforts are focused in four coordinated areas to advance the neighborhood: collaborative community planning, affordable housing, economic development and community health and wellness.

Our comprehensive approach is based on the belief that children and families have the right to a neighborhood that

provides safety, opportunity, and hope. This work is part of extending God’s Kingdom of hope, light and abundant life.

We are excited to share the following updates to our Community Advancement efforts:

• Completion of our Neighborhood Equitable Development Planning process in collaboration with The Real Estate Council and JP Morgan

• Acquisition of four liquor stores which once promoted open drug sales, prostitution, and highly violent crimes. On more than one occasion these businesses were the cause of gunfire and fatalities during football games and practices. NO MORE! The vision is to revitalize these properties into healthy spaces that reflect the priorities and values of the community as expressed in the equitable development plan.

• Continued cultivation of walkable urban retail on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd with a focus on local businesses through recent leasing of St. Philip’s commercial property to enable re-opening of Clippin Crownz 4Christ Barbershop which was recently displaced from its former property. The shop provides much needed community service and a safe space for gathering and connection.

• Launched entrepreneurship workshops focused on helping local dreams become realities.

Our South Dallas Neighbors Speak on the Changing Community

Lottie Clark , a mother and grandmother, has lived in South Dallas for six years and says she’s noticed so much good happening in her community. She moved from Pleasant Grove after crime started hitting close to her home. “It was right next to where I lived...I wanted to be able to sleep at night. It got so bad,” Clark explains. “My grandkids grew up watching crime. They knew the drug dealers, so a change had to be made.”

Ms. Clark, who attends Cornerstone Baptist Church, said six years ago after hearing about the development and positive change coming to the area from Pastor Chris Simmons and LaSheryl Walker, St. Philip's Community Center Director, she took a leap of faith and moved. Clark believes St. Philip’s and Cornerstone are genuinely invested in South Dallas and are doing more than talking, but making change happen. “They are getting drugs, violence, and prostitutes out. They are building and making it safer for the seniors and the younger generations.”

Although Clark is seeing the positive improvements being made, she says there are some things that still need to be tackled. She wants to see affordable grocery stores with fresh produce and retail stores. Clark says there are some bugs in the system but she has faith that it will all be worked out for the betterment of the community.

Clark believes St. Philip’s and Cornerstone are genuinely invested in South Dallas and are doing more than talking, but making change happen.

“Cutting out crime one head at a time” is exactly what Jayvee Burbery is doing with his barbershop “Clippin Crownz 4Christ,” located on Martin Luther King Boulevard. His life has completely turned around by the grace of God. He acknowledges his success to the Men of Nehemiah, a Christian based ministry for men that have been homeless, addicted to drugs, and incarcerated. Burberry says he was all three in 2014, but in 2015 he graduated the program, giving him a fresh start.

Through this program, Burberry was able to get his first shop, originally located next to Forest Theatre before that strip of land was purchased by CitySquare, causing him to move out with nowhere to go. “In that process, a couple of guys who are on the Nehemiah board knew Dr. Flowers at St. Philip's and they were in the process of buying this (new location) down here. Once they bought this, they gave us this spot right here, which was an old carpet building,” Burbery explained.

The carpet building had to be completely renovated, but through God’s grace and mercy, nearly everything inside of Burbery’s new shop was donated. From the plumbing to the framing and the electrical work. Burbery says he is eternally grateful and so glad to be bringing a Christian barbershop to this end of MLK Boulevard, which he says really needs it. He’s very optimistic that his Christian barbershop, St. Philip’s, Cornerstone, and the Men of Nehemiah’s ministries can bring a safe atmosphere where the community doesn’t have to worry about drugs and crime taking over. “It’s going to change. Anywhere that God is involved, it’s going to change. It has no authority around here,” Burbery said.

A Fun Summer of Learning at St.

Philip’s Summer Camp 2019 was an amazing experience for both our summer scholars and instructors. Our scholars got the opportunity to learn a wide range of curriculum including Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), gardening, and an array of sports. Participants took several field trips that made learning fun. Field trips to the African American Museum, Aquarium, Texas Instruments, and a host of other sites exposed our summer scholars to local cultural, educational, and science inspired venues.

We would like to send a special thank you to all of our instructors and partner organizations, including AmeriCorps, Big Thought, and Brighter Bites, who made summer camp at St. Philip’s such a blast. We would also like to extend a special thank you to our funders for making this vital program possible:

• Anonymous Donor

• Cotton Bowl Foundation

• Dallas Stars Foundation

• Rees-Jones Foundation

• State Fair of Texas

• Texas Instruments Foundation

Campaign Update

In 1946, at a time when the diocese was uncertain it would be successful, a group of Black Episcopalians decided to establish a church in South Dallas. They believed. At the same time, another Episcopal church was forming in North Dallas with equal desire to serve the Lord and impact their surrounding community for good. As both churches grew, they learned of each other and began working together to ensure their mutual success.

Over time, St. Philip’s needs grew far beyond its original vision. Together, with its founding sister church, St. Michaels All Angels and later, the Churches of the Incarnation and Transfiguration, St. Philip's would begin adding core programming to support the community surrounding its small congregation. Eventually, the church would not flourish yet the programs they founded and believed in would set the foundation for what we all know today as St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

The We Believe campaign is founded on the very same beliefs shared almost 75 years ago. In 2021, $50 million raised under the banner, vision, and beliefs founded by the diocese and St. Philip’s parishioners will be realized in ways beyond their expectations!

The road to 75 years of service to South Dallas, has been filled with many peaks and valleys. Your belief in the ministry of St. Philip's continues to be the faith needed to ensure our success. We NEED you still and even more now. In the next two years, the We Believe campaign will embark to fund the following key programmatic and capital projects that will serve to support the needs of the community and the school:

• Complete the Perot Family’s endowment match of $1.5 million for Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry

• Fund $4 million in endowment for tuition assistance support to meet growing demand

• Fund $6 million in capital support for the Athletic Complex and Community Park

• Fund $6 million in Annual Funding to support operation from 2019-2021

YOU believed when we kicked off this campaign four years ago. YOUR belief made the $35 million raised to date possible and has gifted our neighborhood, South Dallas, our city, and St. Philip’s with:

• Endowed and named leadership positions - Perot Family Headmaster, George T. Lee, Jr. Principal, Hunt Family Early Childhood Director, and Lyle Math Specialist

• Over a dozen new endowed family funds increasing tuition assistance by 30%

• Two endowed and named buildings - The Doherty Family Fieldhouse and Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry

• New technology in every classroom and in the hands of 80% of St. Philip’s students

• Endowed partial programming support for Afterschool, Fine Arts, and Athletics

• The addition of a Reading and Math Specialist and Certified Language Therapist for students with

Dyslexia

• The addition of teaching assistants to support individualized and small group instruction

• An increase in Annual Fund support for program growth and operational expansion

• The equitable development and revitalization on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd

• A new Performing and Fine Arts building and campus renovations planned for 2020

As we embark on the journey to complete the campaign and prepare to celebrate 75 years, your continued belief in St. Philip’s, the children and community we serve, is important to realizing that vision set by that small congregation so many years ago. To serve a community with the love of Christ and instilling a love of self and community was their dream.

THANK YOU for believing in that dream and making it a reality today!

Grand Re-Opening and Dedication of Community Food Pantry

The WE BELIEVE CAMPAIGN continues to enrich the breadth and depth of St. Philip's programming and the community it serves. In September, Our Community Pantry was renamed Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, after a lifelong steward of service to South Dallas and hunger initiatives in Dallas – Bette Perot. In recognition of her birthday earlier this year, the Perot family funded $2 million, $500,000 in operating over the next five years and $1.5 million challenge gift, to endow and rename the food pantry in Aunt Bette’s honor. This was a fitting and thoughtful tribute to a woman who played a role in St. Philip’s early hunger initiatives.

Thirty years ago, Bette Perot volunteered with St. Philip's very first food pantry, which operated out of a small storage room at the time. She recognized the space was inadequate and purchased shelving that still exists in this location today, which is now utilized solely by VNA's Meals on Wheels program.

Just months before the renaming, the operation and management of the food pantry fully transitioned to St. Philip’s School and Community Center from North Texas Food Bank, who are currently in the process of opening similar food pantries in other food desert communities in D/FW. Our client choice pantry has seen dramatic growth from the amount of people being fed to the number of volunteers and donors willing to give their

time and resources. Today, the pantry is fully operated by volunteer service and two paid staff members.

In 2013, prior to moving into its current building, the pantry served up to 200 individuals per month. Today, Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry serves over 650 households, 1,500 individuals, and distributes 700,000 pounds of food annually. Fighting hunger in our community couldn’t be done without our partners, volunteers, and people with a heart to serve others in need.

AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS

For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4- to 14-year-olds in the southern sector of Dallas.

Saints Homecoming Highlights

This year, nearly 600 people came out to support and cheer on our SAINTS at St. Philip’s Homecoming! The Saints played several football games accompanied with lots of food and fun. The Saints 12U football team lost 0-7, our flag football team took home the win, 21-0 and our Tiny Mites had a tie game 14-14. Throughout the day, everyone in attendance enjoyed food trucks selling snow cones, turkey legs, and more. There was plenty of fun for children to enjoy – from face painting to bounce houses.

Regional Semi-Final Champions

Our Saints Junior Pee Wee team are the Southwest Regional Champions. They traveled all the way to Colorado and took home the win.

Congratulations to our Saints on an amazing football Season.

Meet A Stellar Former Saint - Brandon Averette

It’s all about a positive mentality for St. Philip’s Alum, Brandon Averette, who strives to see and be all that God has for him and his life. Averette is currently a redshirt Junior for the Utah Valley University Wolverines, where he is majoring in Communications. Last year, he made the difficult but mature decision to transfer from Oklahoma State University. When he thinks about his future, Averette hopes to play professionally and open his own gym to teach youth basketball skills; giving them opportunities to play like he had through St. Philip's.

In fact, Averette credits the man he is today to St. Philip’s. He attended the school from Pre-K through 5th grade and began his athletic career on the community center’s courts. “St. Philip’s made me who I am in basketball, school, and in life. It prepared me for the real world,” he said.

After leaving St. Philip’s, Averette attended public school and quickly gained an appreciation for his St. Philip’s experience, particularly the exposure to his cultural and historic roots. He also believes St. Philip’s made him a stronger athlete by showing him a different side of life in a tough part of town and allowing him to share the court with some tremendously talented players. This helped him with empathy and his edge and demeanor on the basketball court.

As he gets older, Averette says he notices the distractions that come with life, but he will keep moving forward to his goals and aspirations. Great things lie ahead!

LIFE AFTER ST. PHILIP'S

Middle School Rules

Tucker Robertson, Class of 2018 8th grader at Episcopal School of Dallas

“I may not remember all the things my St. Philip's teachers said to me. I, however, will never forget how St. Philip’s made me feel…like I am more than what you see. I now attend The Episcopal School of Dallas (ESD). I felt welcomed into my new school family from the very beginning. Because St. Philip’s taught me how to be comfortable in my own skin, I had no problems making new friends as I went from being a Saint to an Eagle.

My ESD experience has been good. I’ve been able to try new sports, meet new people, and learn new things. My greatest St. Philip’s experience was the 5th Grade Civil Rights Trip and The Rites of Passage program. They both helped me realize there will be moments when you must be tough, courageous, and willing to take a few risks.”

Sydney Thomas, Class of 2019 7th grader at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy

“My experience at Greiner has been a great one. I’ve learned a lot of new things this year. I auditioned for All-Regional Choir for Dallas and surrounding cities and was chosen to be in the top choir, which only a select few students are accepted. I also tried out and made the cheerleading team.

While at St. Philip’s, I learned so many things that have helped me in Middle School. St. Philip’s taught me about my African-American culture and to be proud of who and where I come from. I also learned how to do my best in everything. Most importantly, I learned about God, and that He should be my number one priority no matter what. St. Philip’s taught me so much in the short time that I was there. I will be thankful for the rest of my life for St. Philip’s School and Community Center.”

Professional Pivots

Last year, Jamila Jenkins earned a Bachelor’s in Architecture and Design from Howard University. This year, she is a Washington D.C. based project engineer for Gilbane Building Company. After graduating from St. Philip’s in 2007, Jamila matriculated to the Episcopal School of Dallas.

“St. Philip’s taught me to be confident and proud without limits, in my own skin..."

Her journey to become an architect was paved early on with the love and support from the place she considers a second home. A place that makes it hard for her to define her fondest memory. There were so many! “I appreciate the unparalleled love and support of my classmates and the St. Philip’s community that my family received when my mother, Donna Jenkins, passed several years ago. A photo of her remains in the halls in remembrance of her dedication and impact on the community. St. Philip’s will forever be a home away from home.”

Jamila’s passion, skill, and determination to succeed is what makes up her true essence. She attributes much of what she learned about herself to the foundation she received from St. Philip’s. “St. Philip’s taught me to be confident and proud without limits, in my own skin. In those moments where I sit and feel otherwise, I begin to recite to myself…Look at me. I am more than what you see…”

Jordan Harris, Class of 2005

The tree is in the seed and that couldn’t be more true for alum

Jordan Harris whose “fondest memory from St. Philip’s was being able to attend the 5th grade Civil Rights trip culminating in my first visit to my Alma Mater, Tuskegee University.”

As Jordan navigates through his life and career, this line from The Creed rings as a reminder that anything is possible: Destiny is mine!

Jordan earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Tuskegee University in Alabama after graduating from Bishop Dunne High School. He is currently a Production Engineer at Gatorade. “The best thing about working at Gatorade is being constantly challenged to innovate and solve new problems for a product sold to millions of customers all over the world.”

As Jordan navigates through his life and career, this line from The Creed rings as a reminder that anything is possible: Destiny is mine! If it is to be, it's up to me. “This simple quote from the St. Philip’s Creed has stuck with me my entire life. It’s helped me to remember that every situation in my life is within my control and I’m up to any challenge this world has to offer.”

IN MEMORIAM

“Memory is the language of those passed on. Now residing in Glory.”

DR. BARBARA CAMBRIDGE (1938 – 2019)

Dr. Cambridge, a social worker, psychotherapist, certified personal life coach, author, lecturer, consultant, storyteller, and trailblazer, was St. Philip’s favorite homilist and arguably, our greatest ambassador. We thank God for allowing her to share so much of her time, her treasure, and her heart with the St. Philip’s community as an early member of St. Philip’s church, a board member, grandparent, and community activist. Her beautiful spirit and light shined brightly at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in South Dallas! We can only imagine the joy she now feels as she gets to say face to face, the greeting she taught hundreds of St. Philip’s students through her homilies, “Good morning, God! I love you.”

DORIS COWLING (1925 – 2019)

Mrs. Cowling, the beloved mother to St. Philip’s current Board Chair, David Cowling, was a loyal friend of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center ministry. She compassionately shared her time and treasure with St. Philip’s for many years. Doris, a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, was an avid gardener and active in the Kermit Garden Club. We are grateful for her loving spirit and for leading the way to three generations of engagement between the Cowling family and St. Philip’s.

COUNCILWOMAN CAROLYN DAVIS (1961 – 2019)

St. Philip’s, along with other members of the South Dallas community, was stunned and saddened by the tragic passing of Councilwoman Carolyn Davis this past summer. She was a passionate advocate and champion for South Dallas, having served four terms as Councilwoman for District 7. We thank her for unapologetically and compassionately standing tall and strong for the poor, the marginalized, and for South Dallas. Her legacy will live on at St. Philip’s, particularly through our hunger initiatives and the community pantry, of which she was a staunch supporter.

H. ROSS PEROT, SR. (1930 – 2019)

He led a remarkable life! One that began humbly in Texarkana, took him to the world stage as an IT pioneer, a humanitarian, and finally back into the arms of his loving family, the most cherished component of his long, full life. Fifteen years ago, Perot and his wife of 60+ years, Margot, began their compassionate support of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Over the years, their philanthropy grew to include their entire family. St. Philip’s is blessed to be a beneficiary of Perot’s legacy in South Dallas that includes the solidification of our School leadership and the provision of dignified social services through Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry, named in honor of his sister.

St. Philip’s would also like to extend its deepest sympathies to our very own Perot Family Headmaster, Dr. Terry J. Flowers , Hunt Family Director of Early Childhood, Telissha Wesson , and two members of our Community Center staff, Coach Robert Green and Jackie Bradford - who lost loved ones this year. May God continue to comfort and strengthen you during your time of loss.

EVENT RECAP

Change Agents Made Our MISSION: POSSIBLE

Many accepted the mission and joined the fight to be an agent of change! This year’s North Texas Giving Day campaign was a huge success thanks to those who so thoughtfully gave to the Family Annual Fund campaign. We raised over $117,000 and reached our goal of 100% participation among our students, faculty/staff, and trustees!

Many thanks to the Pitre Family, Andrew and Abigail Sinwell, Juliette and Mark Moussa, and Fr. Jon and Dale Stasney for serving as lead agents. Their compassionate support empowers us to combat hunger and poverty and to champion education and opportunity in South Dallas. No mission is too great to conquer when WE join forces.

The Community Thanksgiving meal is a longstanding tradition of St. Philip’s that started in the early eighties with the faculty and staff cooking at their homes and serving a few people in the neighborhood. This year with over 315 volunteers, we were able to serve the members in our community. Thank you to volunteers from organizations and our many friends and families of St. Philip's for making it possible.

Our students aren’t the only ones learning, our parents are, too. This year’s “Step Up to Excellence” Parent University delivered an interactive experience of “staying the course” at St. Philip’s through sixth grade. Attendees journeyed through classrooms getting handson experience of what students take part in daily. St. Philip’s educators highlighted the impact of each grade level across the curriculum with particular emphasis upon what makes those grades unique at St. Philip’s. Special panel sessions were conducted for sixth-grade students and their parents to equip them with wisdom and guidance as they prepare for “life after St. Philip’s.”

While parents were gaining insight into the life of their children, the students were immersed in workshops. Students participated in fun, yet educational experiences to encourage the development of life skills. Students gained new knowledge on social-emotional learning by practicing how to manage their emotions, encourage others, and understand verbal and nonverbal emotional cues.

6th Annual Kidpreneur Expo

Enthusiastic, polished and confident young entrepreneurs from 6-16 years of age showcased their ideas and products at the Annual Capital One Kidpreneur Expo. The expo which provides a platform and support for budding children and youth with businesses of their own, proved to be a great learning experience for all those that participated. Thanks to the generous support of The Mark 11:24 Foundation and our new partners – DFW Child and D CEO, the sixth year was once again a success with this year’s Kid Tank participants bringing their A-game. The judges included Will Maddox (D CEO), Sunny Banerjea (FIS), Dr. Tunde Adeyemo (Ernst & Young), Mark Esposito (Esposito Securities and Esposito Private Equity Group) and Ashlyn Simmons (a previous Kid Tank winner and Kidpreneur alum). A special thanks to Kidpreneur alum, Hannah Selders, (ESINIARA) for sharing her success story and best practices during the expo’s Q&A.

This Fall, St. Philip’s launched its first Fine Arts Professional Development Symposium, funded in part by generous support from the Kimbrough Family. This year's theme, "Giving Our Children Space to Express Themselves,” allowed participants to explore intentional teaching practices and policies that create an artistic pipeline of success for children of color. We examined how teaching professionals have the power to ensure that all children who seek the arts have opportunities afforded to them in the schools they attend.

Our keynote speaker, the incomparable Debbie Allen, gave a motivating account of her life as an artist and arts educator. She shared moments from her youth where her skin color was a barrier to her art. The audience learned of her absolute resilience, and fortitude as an actress, dancer, and activist. Mrs. Allen gave a master dance class of a lifetime in the Snyder Activity Center to a well-populated group of students, adults, and fans who moved across the floor with her guidance, receiving a small but impactful moment of her legacy.

ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from Outgoing Board Chair

The 2018-2019 fiscal year provided St. Philip’s and me with a season I can only define as bittersweet. I knew going in that this would be my year to say goodbye – my farewell as Board Chair. It has been an absolute privilege to serve with St. Philip’s in this capacity, especially given this era of tremendous growth and gains for such a dynamic ministry.

In so many ways, St. Philip’s has transitioned from “surviving” to “thriving”, this due in part to an incredible group of people that served with me on the board of directors to help push the St. Philip’s mission forward. Their selfless work, along with dedicated faculty and staff, trickled down from our humble, visionary leader, Dr. Terry J. Flowers. The success of the WE BELIEVE CAMPAIGN, now moving into its 5th year, and the $2 million pledge and partnership with the Dallas Stars, furthered tremendous gains made in our organizational management and the provision of vital educational and social services to thousands.

This year also brought about the stunning farewell of St. Philip’s brightest ambassador – Dr. Barbara Cambridge. I worked alongside her for many years as a parent and volunteer and can personally attest to her generosity of time, treasure, talent, and spirit on behalf of the children and community served by St. Philip’s. I am so pleased that on her journey, she was able to witness this ministry bloom in a myriad of ways.

Many thanks to each of you members of the community who chose to open your hearts and resources to St. Philip’s this past year. Your support, outlined in the following pages, allowed St. Philip’s to make a giant step towards its noble vision to transform the world (and our community) through FAITH, EDUCATION, and SERVICE. We are blessed to call you partners in this important work.

A Message from Our Foundation Chair

The St. Philip’s School and Community Center Foundation was established as a separate non-profit corporation in March 1997 to support St. Phillips School and Community Center (SPSCC) by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions, and bequests to SPSCC. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long-term goals, purposes, and objectives of SPSCC.

The We Believe Campaign continues to grow our endowment in a significant way. We are very thankful for the community’s response to this historic campaign, which will embark on its 5th year in 2020. We are very pleased with our investment results. In May 2016, the Foundation switched its investment program to a low-cost, diversified series of index fund positions. As markets around the world have rallied, our investment results have been outstanding.

The combined effect of the We Believe Campaign and our investment returns has increased the value of the foundation’s assets to over $18M as of 9/30/19. This allowed the Foundation to distribute $686,000 to the operations of St. Philip’s School and Community Center the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

As we look ahead to the continued success of the We Believe Campaign, we are delighted to be part of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center mission. I and the other trustees of the Foundation are pleased to be providing increased funds for tuition assistance, school operations, and community center programs. With continued financial support and lots of hard work, St. Philip’s will continue to be a beacon of hope for neighborhood families seeking a high-quality education for their children.

Sincerely,

St. Philip’s School & Community Center Foundation

For information on leaving a PLANNED GIFT and LEGACY to St. Philip’s School and Community Center, please visit our website or email aherod@stphilips.com.

We work diligently to ensure all donor names are listed and correctly acknowledged. We apologize for any incorrect or omitted names. Please email philanthropy@stphilips.com or call 214.421.5221 ext. 238 with any corrections or concerns.

Ways to Support St. Philip’s TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

PLANNED GIVING

St. Philip’s is excited to announce the establishment of the DR. BARBARA CAMBRIDGE GIVING CIRCLE, our planned giving program. Are you considering including St. Philip’s in your estate planning? If your family would like to leave a LASTING LEGACY at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy, please contact our Philanthropy Department at aherod@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 238, for more information.

CONSIDER EMPLOYEE CORPORATE GIVING

– St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).

DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT WITH MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary

value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.

SECURITIES

Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.

SHOP AND SHARE

St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.

THE GIFT OF TIME

From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.
