s humans, we have a tendency to measure what we value.

Accordingly, we monitor investments, check bank account balances, and, hopefully, track our children’s performance in school. In today’s culture of hefty demands for outcome measures and statistical performance metrics, St. Philip’s encourages everyone to monitor the “hidden figures,” as well.

Where education and social impact are concerned, there are components our School and Community Center deeply value that are far too often clouded in traditional evaluations of progress towards excellence. Integrity, ethical commitment, and determination to serve are some of the determinants we strive to examine. The purpose of this concentration is academic performance. We see them as validation of the purpose of academic pursuit. Our dynamic Principal, Kellee Murrell, leads this charge with PROJECT BASED LEARNING as the school wide instructional approach. Under her leadership, the daily instruction is tied to solving community and world problems. We can truly GROW SOUTH through the innovation of our youth.

At St. Philip’s, exemplary academic achievement is simply a means to better serve others. Our students are blessed to see service in action through our Community Center and neighborhood initiatives. and where we feel comfortable. Home can be a safe haven, a place of excitement, learning, love, and growth. There’s no place like home!

Given most children spend considerably more time at school than home, we find it important that school feels like home – especially in Early Childhood. There’s no place like St. Philip’s!

St. Philip’s embodies a warm, nurturing, God-centered spirit that welcomes each child and their families with opened arms. We are because they are. We are family.

G.I.F.T.S. is offered to 6th grade girls to aid them in their transition into womanhood and to strengthen their core values before they graduate from St. Philip’s. “We work to develop their interpersonal communication skills and develop and define short and long term goals so they can fulfill their dreams and become who God has created them to be,” says Ms. Harris, who considers

The participants are encouraged to embrace the responsibilities and privilege of their pending transition into manhood. “Rites of Passage is inspirational,” says a mentee who’s been in the program for three years. “It’s helped me think about my future.”

He presented three students with a total of $1,000. For the next ten years, Mr. Okpa, a native of Nigeria and Dallas businessman, pledges to make an investment in the lives of young men here at St. Philip’s with the expectation that they

Project-Based Learning (PBL) has come to St. Philip’s!

This engaging learning process puts our students PK2-6th Grades in the driver’s seat and allows them more voice and choice in authentic curriculum-based projects. In contrast to typical passive learning or teacher-guided instruction, students participate interactively through small group or full classroom research and exploration to gain content knowledge. As a result, we are witnessing greater depth of inquiry and critical thinking as the students develop their own products to address particular issues of concern.

Projects for the first semester culminated with our PBL Showcase, where students presented to parents and members of the community their final products. Student products addressed driving questions such as: •

How Can We Increase Awareness and Respect for the Culture of Mexican Immigrants and Mexican-American People in the U.S.?

AT A GLANCE: COMMUNIT Y CENTER IMPACT A Family’s Testimonial Gloria Walls is one of our closest neighbors. She has lived in South Dallas since 1970 and on Panama, a quaint and quiet street located directly behind St. Philip’s campus, since 1984. “I raised my four boys here and four of my grandchildren,” she tells Lasheryl Walker, our Community Center Coordinator, on a recent sunny spring afternoon in her living room. “St. Philip’s has made a big impact on all of our lives.”

Hers is a three generational impact story. Walls used to play baseball for St. Philip’s in the 1960’s when it was just a small community center.

“I remember the nuns! We’ve come a long way since the ‘60’s when St. Philip’s was just a small church building and a gym. Wasn’t no brick back then. Just concrete.”

Her sons played sports for St. Philip’s when they were growing up, as well.

AT A GL A NCE: ATHLETICS For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4 – 14 year olds in the southern sector of Dallas.

Former Saints, Patrick Terry and JeMichael Bowens, Lead Madison High School to Championship Title Patrick Terry and JeMichael Bowens have been playing basketball together since they were in elementary school. Both played as SAINTS for St. Philip’s for several years and recently lead the mighty Madison Trojans to its third UIL 3A state title since 2009. Terry, a point guard, was named MVP of the dynamic game against Brock High School. Bowens was named District MVP. Terry and Bowens, a small forward and point guard, have successfully built on St. Philip’s and Madison’s traditions of competitive, high-caliber basketball.

College is on the horizon for both young men, as well. Both have received numerous college offers from regional junior colleges and Division 2 schools.

One to Watch: Calvin Avery Former St. Philip’s Saint, Calvin Avery, has become popular in the college recruiting world.

The 6’1, 310-pound defensive tackle – a sophomore at Bishop Dunne Catholic School – is already receiving offers from colleges and universities including Texas A&M, UT Austin, Rice, Arizona State, TCU, Oklahoma State, and Notre Dame.

He put up impressive numbers in 2016 with 68 tackles, 12 sacks and one pass defended in 13 games. Great things lie ahead for this young man!

OUR VOLUNTEER S St. Philip’s Expresses Appreciation with Valentines for Volunteers Chapel and Breakfast On Valentine’s Day, the St. Philip’s community held a special chapel and breakfast to recognize and celebrate its volunteers. Rev. Paul Rasmussen of Highland Park United Methodist Church gave an inspiring homily to fit the occasion and students gave lovely presentations to express their appreciation of our volunteers.

The impact of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center ministry would not be possible without the help of approximately 1,000 volunteers annually. Their generous sharing of time and talent throughout the year translates into equipped students, fed neighbors, trained athletes, healthy and happy families, and a safer community.

Class of 2001 News: It’s A Small World After All: Alumnus Meets Friend of St. Philip’s on Med School Rotation Jesse Hernandez (St. Philip’s Class of 2001) is a third year medical student at UT Southwestern. He’s currently in the middle of clinical clerkships where he rotates through all the core specialties such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Family, Neurology, OB/Gyn, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. He was pleasantly surprised to learn the doctor on his OB/Gyn rotation, Dr. Dennis Factor, is affiliated with St. Philip’s. “After talking a bit about my background, I revealed that I’m an alumnus of St. Philip’s,” Hernandez explains.

BOAR D OF TRUSTEES St. Philip’s Trustees Rise to the Challenge Meet the winning team of St. Philip’s 1600 BOARD OF TRUSTEE CHALLENGE. Elizabeth Bourgeois-Gordon, McKay Heim, Abigail Sinwell, and Sharon Youngblood rose to the task of making the largest number of new introductions to St. Philip’s. Our Board Chair, Kathy Hubbard, challenged our trustees earlier this year. Between the four of them, 22 people visited the campus to learn more about the St. Philip’s ministry. There were six trustee teams established for this unique challenge. All in all, it was a success with approximately 80 people gifted with the opportunity to see St. Philip’s’ great works in action.

Jan Pruitt Former Executive Director of North Texas Food Bank (1953 – 2017)

Jan Pruitt was a pioneer in the field of hunger relief and a true friend to St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

She served nearly 20 years as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the North Texas Food Bank that expanded tremendously during her tenure. Pruitt’s effectiveness in the battle against hunger garnered her respect and accolades regionally and nationally. In fact, she received the John van Hengel Fellowship Award, Feeding America’s highest honor for the executive food bank leadership.

“Jan ‘s mighty work led the nation in tackling hunger insecurity,” says Dr. Terry Flowers, St. Philip’s Perot Family Headmaster. “She led us all to view hunger as we would the rising of the sun. Just as sure as the sun rises each morning, hunger will be with us.” Flowers also shared that one of Pruitt’s strengths was her ability to collaborate.

She helped initiate popular events that benefited North Texas Food Bank and created greater visibility for the hunger issues in our community, such as Taste of the NFL, Empty Bowls, and Restaurant Week.

Our Community Pantry, the first pantry to be operated by North Texas Food Bank volunteers and staff, opened on St. Philip’s campus three years ago and has become what Pruitt hoped for in her remarks at the pantry’s grand opening – “a model for others and a catalyst for neighborhood transformation.”

A WORD FROM OUR WE BELIEVE VOLUNTEER CAMPAIGN ADVISOR – BILL LIVELY As the second year of the five year WE BELIEVE campaign nears completion, it is already deemed the most successful philanthropic initiative in St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s 70-year history. To date, WE BELIEVE has inspired more than $13 million in total commitments, including the Perot Family’s generous $3 million gift endowing Dr. Terry Flowers’ Head Master’s position, $2 million from Diana and Todd Maclin (this includes a $1 million challenge gift), $1 million from Gradus, $500,000 from Ashlee and Chris Kleinert for Named Scholarships for After School Care and Our Community Pantry, $200,000 from the McDermott Family for the After School Care Fund and many other generous donations from loyal and new partners.

WE BELIEVE exists to spread the good news of St. Philip’s impact on Dallas children and families to new audiences and to ensure St. Philip’s long-term financial health and stability by endowing programs and positions important to its noble mission. Of the $50 million to be raised over the campaign, 90% will be used for Endowment and Capital needs and 10% for Operations.

The impact is already being felt throughout the organization. Among its many accomplishments during its first two years, the campaign has funded a new iLab equipped with robotics, 3D printers and upgraded touch screens, provided families with more than $250,000 in tuition assistance, funded needed deferred maintenance in three different buildings and enabled St. Philip’s to engage four new Early Childhood Teaching Assistants.

We are encouraged by the response of the Dallas community for this effort and look forward to officially moving into the public phase of the campaign in the coming year. WE BELIEVE great things lie ahead for St. Philip’s School and Community Center and South Dallas.

Mentoring Peacem aker s: The 17 TH Annual Destiny Award Luncheon with Cicely T yson & Soledad O’Brien Over 800 Dallasites came together this past February for St. Philip’s 17th Annual Destiny Award Luncheon, featuring a conversation with the iconic Tony and Emmy Award winning American actress, Cicely Tyson, moderated by celebrated journalist, Soledad O’Brien. The luncheon was co-chaired by Ashlee Kleinert and Michelle Thomas and reaped over $680,000 for St. Philip’s vital educational and social service programs.

Cicely Tyson’s personal story of perseverance and recount of her incredible six-decade career, was engaging and inspiring. Luncheon attendees also enjoyed an interactive academic and artistic showcase by students and faculty and presentations from School alumnae, Kayla Andrews, a senior at Episcopal School of Dallas, and Community Center alumnae, Anastasia “The Bold” Bolden, an adult that claimed St. Philip’s saved her life when she resided in the neighborhood as a child.

The luncheon theme was “Mentoring Peacemakers.” St. Philip’s spoke to its efforts through the school of equipping its students to be leaders that are courageous and compassionate enough to reach across the great divides of race, culture, and economics to promote harmony and humanity. “Let us press toward the mark of God’s high calling for all of us to LOVE one another, to LEARN from each other, to STAND together for what is right, and to SERVE our neighbors,” said Perot Family Headmaster, Dr. Terry Flowers. “This is how true PEACE is achieved. Our DESTINIES are intertwined.”

Jewel and Roland Parrish received the 2017 Humanitarian Award for their philanthropy and leadership. The Parrish’s, owners of one of the most successful McDonald’s franchises in the country, are highly committed to giving back to the community, especially causes that support the education and welfare of youth. At the event, they announced a $100,000 matching gift for all donations made the afternoon of the luncheon. This generous gesture enabled St. Philip’s to meet its fundraising goal for the event.

Capital One Kidpreneur Expo On April 22, St. Philip’s

presents

hosted the Capital One Kidpreneur Expo and school art show, the third event of its kind at St. Philip’s. Dozens of budding entrepreneurs – ages 5 to 15 – showcased their products and services, attended informative seminars, and pitched their businesses in the “Kid Tank” (a friendlier version of the popular “Shark Tank”). There were a variety of businesses represented, from lemonade stands, to custom jewely, bow ties, and even colorful slime.

Jaylen Bledsoe, a 19-year-old self-made millionaire who started his first business at the age of 12, served as the keynote speaker for the event. His business - The Jaylen D. Bledsoe Global Group has expanded from solely being a technology company to include brand and business development and venture capital funding.

He shared how being poor was his biggest motivation to start a business. “I might not be the best at what I do but I have the best work ethic. No one can take that from me,” he explained. “This is how you win: Don’t focus simply on money. Focus on impacting and helping people; money will follow. Build a platform to help people. The money you need to live, God will then provide.”
