A Word From the Perot Family Headmaster
HIStory
Aswe move towards closing out St. Philip’s 70th Anniversary year, it is appropriate to examine our journey from a historical perspective. A glance back reveals that HIStory has been with us.
J. Presper Eckert, the inventor of the first electronic numerical integrator and computer, could not have imagined the technological advancements we are seeing today. HIStory has been with us. The state of world relations today could not have been foreseen in 1946, when the United Nations formed. America had no clue of the state the country would be in 70 years after a woman named Hillary and a man named Donald were born.
When a small, faithful group of Black Episcopalians approached the Diocese of Dallas with the desire to establish a ministry in South Dallas, HIStory was with them. They had no way of knowing what a mighty impact St. Philip’s would have. In those days of racial strife, the notion of Blacks and Whites setting aside their differences and embracing their oneness to impact lives through spirituality, scholarship, service, and sacrifice, demonstrates that HIStory was truly on their side.
As we celebrate seven decades of ministry and press on to advance God’s “works” through St. Philip’s, let us acknowledge that we are here because of HIStory. Not only has He been with us, He desires for HIStory to live within us. HIStory of sacrifice, love and redemption will allow St. Philip’s, as well as each of us individually, to be positioned to say “the best is yet to come.”
As you enjoy this magazine, give reflection to the grace and mercy that has brought us thus far and the grace and mercy that awaits those who allow HIStory to become theirs.

Blessings, Dr. Terry J. Flowers

Not only has He been with us, He desires for HIStory to live within us. HIStory of sacrifice, love and redemption will allow St. Philip’s, as well as each of us individually, to be positioned to say “the best is yet to come.”
A Word From Our Principal
We’re Going for the GOAL!
Our faculty was drawn to our 2016 – 2017 school theme –“Going for the GOAL” – after witnessing the culmination of various athletes’ commitment to their craft in the 2016 Summer Olympics. This theme charges our little scholars to have high expectations for themselves and to not only set goals but prepare themselves to achieve them through FAITH, CHARACTER, HARDWORK, and PERSEVERANCE. Moreover, we not only want our students to achieve the goals they set for themselves, but those God has and expects from them as well.
For St. Philip’s, GOAL represents, G - God Centered, O - Optimistic, A - Allegiant to His Word and L - Loyal to our Mission. As a faculty, the theme reminds us that we play an integral part in helping students achieve the goals they’ve set for themselves. Our role as educators is to provide students with critical thinking skills and help each student identify the inner fortitude necessary to achieve their personal goals.
The 2016 – 2017 school year is also one with a resurgence of creativity at St. Philip’s! We are re-awaking each child and educator’s ability to be INNOVATIVE. We’ve begun PROJECT BASED LEARNING (PBL) in each of our grade levels. PBL is “a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for a period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.” This method is instrumental in encouraging our students to be thinkers and creators.
This semester in their PBL cohorts, our students are responding to driving questions such as “How Can Different Organisms Survive, Produce, Reproduce Within the Same Ecosystem?”, “How Can

People in Our Nation Solve the Problems That Racism Has Created for People of Color?”, “Was Shakespeare the Social Guru of His Time? …TMZ?” and “How Can We Increase Recreation in South Dallas?”
George Courous, of the Innovator’s Mindset, said “often the biggest barrier to innovation is our own way of thinking.” The essential focus at St. Philip’s School and Community Center this school year, is to revive the dormant innovator that lies within each student and educator. The sky is the limit!
Striving for Our Goal,

Kellee Murrell
AT A GLANCE: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Our school currently serves over 200 students, grades PreK2-6th (ages 2 – 11) who benefit from St. Philip’s rigorous, nurturing, and dynamic Christian based education.
St. Philip’s Resident Songbird – Brenda McClure –Retires After 25 Years of Service
In the words of Dr. Terry J. Flowers, “Ms. Brenda McClure is so good at what she does, she could teach a rock to sing!” For over two decades, St. Philip’s has been blessed by the gifted artistry and teaching of Ms. McClure. During her time at St. Philip’s, she taught EVERY student and their lives are better for it.
The St. Philip’s family was able to pull off a surprise tribute performance for McClure in September. The chapel was filled with her colleagues, family, friends, students, and many alumni eager to share and express their gratitude for her dedicated and extraordinary service. We send our best wishes to our resident songbird as she prepares for her Encore!

“Thank you for your gospel; Each one of us has recorded a fragment of it in our souls.
“
THIS SONGBIRD
By Alicia “IV” Holmes
This is a thank you
From each of us
Who have witnessed this songbird
Use the gift of her voice
And the height of her reach
And the sway in her smile
And the lift of her finger when she is ready for you to sing.
From each one of us
Who have witnessed this songbird
Create the magic of music in the spur of a moment, as she sat and listened intently to the word of God fall upon her spirt and ask for the instant quickening of his word, to be translated into a melody,
For all his children to sing.
This is a thank you.
From all of us
Who hate to see you leaving
But are excited to watch you go --
You go girl!
Thank you for your gospel
Each one of us has recorded a fragment of it in our souls.
We've all been touched by you.
But as much as we want to
We can't say thank you to you
We have to thank God for you
For the gift of the beautiful you
This is a bearing of all of your flowers for your living eyes to see
For any time you had a doubt now you can believe, That you did a spectacular thing
When you decided to Sing...

New iLab STEMS Opportunity Through Exposure
Thanks to generous grants from the Hillcrest Foundation and the Hudson Foundation, St. Philip’s School and Community Center is proud to now have its very own iLab! The lab allows St. Philip’s to provide our students in the School and children in the Community Center with access to resources to help them be competitive in technology and to gain exposure to current trends that will enhance the way in which they learn.
Since its opening in September, students have been amazed by their experience and excited to see our former Principal, Gwendolyn Barjon, back this year as the Director of Innovation and Science and the Lead Instructor for the iLab. Mrs. Barjon ensures that each faculty member is able to infuse classroom curriculum and learning through the iLab’s state of the art technology that includes zSpace (a virtual reality learning system), iPads, BeeBots, and 3-D Printing. All of St. Philip’s students, even the two and three year olds, utilize the new lab
as we work to cultivate collaboration, risk taking, curiosity, problem solving and critical thinking in ALL of our students. Additionally, Barjon holds a monthly exploratory Saturday Science class in the iLab for St. Philip’s students and children attending neighborhood public schools. Thus far, topics have included robotics, forensics, and astronomy.
In addition to the iLab, we replaced most of our Smart Boards with Interactive Flat Panels for the classroom. This upgrade allows multiple students to participate in lessons on the same screen. This recent investment in Technology at St. Philip’s is intentional as we are committed to bringing our students’ imagination and ideas to life and accelerate their exploration and exposure to all that Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs have to offer. St. Philip’s is growing the engineers, chemists, mathematicians, and programmers of tomorrow!

A Word From Our Community Center Coordinator Building Community
St. Philip’s School and Community Center continues to be a beacon of light to the surrounding community. Part of our mission is to provide compatible community services to the families we serve and we are able to provide those services through over sixty collaborative partnerships. One of my focuses this past year has been to strengthen our partnerships with other agencies in South Dallas in an effort to reduce duplication of services and to streamline our current programing to families.
We’ve successfully established several new dynamic community partnerships with our Neighborhood Community Prosecutor’s Office, WINS, the Zip Code Connection and ACT! Through collaborative efforts with the Prosecutor’s Office, we have been able to develop a Neighborhood Strategy and plan for ongoing community clean ups, beautification projects, and more. To date, we have hosted two community clean-ups and one beautification project, with others scheduled through next spring. WINS (Working in Neighborhoods Strategically) is a group of committed residents, business leaders, and community partners coming together to ensure South Dallas/Fair Park is a place where families and businesses thrive. This year, St. Philip’s hosted WINS’ Partner Signing Day where several organizations made a public pledge to commit their partnership with WINS and advocacy for South Dallas. Additionally, through our partnership with The Zip Code Connection, we worked closely with community activist, George Battle, and other community leaders to host our first annual Prayer Walk, which was a huge success. Finally, we are excited to be working with ACT (Advocates for Community Transformation), a ministry that empowers inner city residents to utilize the justice system to successfully combat crime in their communities. With ACT’s support, we were able to get nuisance

properties in our immediate neighborhood shut down until property owners make much needed repairs.
Bringing these wonderful organizations together, allows St. Philip’s School and Community Center to have a greater impact on the community we serve. Future objectives include conducting a survey to get more concrete data on the surrounding community to identify the need for new or restructured programming.
Stay tuned, because Great Things Lie Ahead for the South Dallas community St. Philip’s calls home!
Sincerely,

LaSheryl Walker
AT A GLANCE: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

New
Partnership with Honey Shine, Inc. and the Mourning Family Foundation Sweetened St. Philip’s 2016 Summer Program
Seven time NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee, Alonzo
Mourning , and his wife Tracy Wilson-Mourning , take the Parable of the Faithful Servant seriously – “to whom much is given, much is required.” Nearly twenty years ago, they established The Mourning Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Miami focused on youth development, education, and enrichment. Since then, they have raised over $25 million to support various programs throughout Miami, including the Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine, Inc., an after-school care and summer program founded by Tracy in 2002, specifically to mentor and nurture girls.
In recent years, the Mournings have worked to broaden their footprint beyond Florida through partnerships with organizations in Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles, California, and now – Dallas!
St. Philip’s was tremendously blessed to have been chosen as a pilot program for Honey Shine’s Dallas initiative. The Mourning Family Foundation and Camp Honey Shine’s investment in St. Philip’s 2016 seven-week STEAM focused Summer Camp,
enhanced the lives of over 100 children. Their support ensured a quality, engaging environment where our summer scholars could beat summer learning loss through daily classes with certified teachers in Math, Science, and Literature and be culturally and artistically enriched through daily classes by trained artists in Music, Theater, and Visual Art.
Additionally, the summer scholars regularly broke out in gender specific sessions for conversations and activities for personal growth, character development, team-building, mentoring, journaling, and self-expression. Over the course of the camp, it was exciting to see a sisterhood and brotherhood develop among our campers, who also took weekly field trips to take their learning beyond the school walls. “Alonzo and I are on a mission to enlighten, brighten, nurture, and empower the paths of young people,” explained Tracy, who spent a week in Dallas to witness our partnership in action. “We are especially committed to young people from disenfranchised communities, like South Dallas.”
Approximately 80% of St. Philip’s summer scholars reside in our key service communities that include South Dallas/Fair Park, Oak Cliff, and Pleasant Grove. Many of our campers aren’t regular students during the school year, however, they are provided a unique St. Philip’s School “experience.” Several of St. Philip’s faculty teach in the summer program, campers participate in a daily chapel, and all of the educational programs are curriculum based – even the classes exploring the arts.
Given the quality of St. Philip’s summer program, we have several campers who participate every year. Dana Mundy’s children attend area public schools and have attended St. Philip’s summer camp for six years. “I’ve seen so much growth in my kids,” she explains. “My son became a volunteer three years ago after he aged out of the summer camp. He’s become a lot more responsible and
mature.” Mundy further explained that her daughter’s reading has improved over the years and her creativity has been sparked through the art classes. “The strength of St. Philip’s is that every kid knows they are loved, wanted, and respected when they’re here. It’s love. Love is the base!”
Strong partnerships and collaborations truly are the key to the success of many of our community centered programs. St. Philip’s 2016 summer program would not have been as sweet or successful without the tremendous support of Alonzo and Tracy Mourning. “We’re supposed to be worldwide,” Tracy explains. “This program is a model that is destined to be replicated and bless thousands.”
A Teacher’s Testimonial - Ramona Wilson
“It was a pleasure to support rising 6th grade students this past summer and to share the love of reading with them. The selected novel of study was THE SKIN I’M IN by Sharon G. Flake. This realistic fiction novel explores a young girl’s struggles with selfesteem and her dissatisfaction over being dark skinned. While study of the novel translated easily into lessons about character development, it also naturally lent itself to the exploration of figurative language, grammar, vocabulary and other content that is often not practiced over the summer and contributes to the achievement gap for some students. The scholars who participated in St. Philip’s summer camp were immersed in thought-provoking, invigorating, and hands – on enriching activities that no doubt set the stage for getting back to school.

As a full time educator at St. Philip’s School and Community Center for twenty-four years, working with students is my passion. The opportunity to engage with the children in the summer camp, gave me the chance to put a different spin on what I typically do throughout the school year. My horizons were broadened by the time I spent with the kiddos. One could say it was a chance to celebrate the “skin I’m in!”

Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead at St. Philip’s!
The idea of a S.T.E.A.M. focused education – a synergetic approach to integrating The Arts with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – is literally gaining steam at St. Philip’s. Hats off to all of our summer program partners who ensured St. Philip’s provided a top notch summer S.T.E.A.M. experience to over 125 children, ages 2 – 12. The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration and St. Paul United Methodist Church guaranteed the “S” in our S.T.E.A.M. camp also stood for Spirituality. Additionally, our partnerships with Big Thought, the Dallas Tennis Association, Lone Star Wind Orchestra , Soul Rep Theatre Company and Zimmarimbas allowed the “A” in our version of S.T.E.A.M. to embrace both the Arts and Athletics!
AmeriCorps continues to be one of our most consistent partnerships, providing teaching assistants for the summer program for the fourth year in a row. In addition to Honey Shine, Inc. and The Mourning Family Foundation, Brighter Bites was a new partner. The Houston based non-profit delivers fresh fruit and veggies to families and programs residing in food deserts. For the duration of St. Philip’s summer program, every Thursday, our scholars and their families were given two full bags of fresh food with suggested recipes to encourage the “brighter” benefits of eating colorful and nutritious food.

Even our youngest campers enjoyed S.T.E.A.M. focused activities – from building dinosaurs to making play-doh from scratch.

Our campers were greatly enriched by the cultural flair of the work they created this summer, much of which reflected Native American, African, and Asian culture.

Campers shined in a performance of "Prints and Patterns", an original play written by recent Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts graduate and South Dallas native, Laneedra Cornelius. The play explored the rich history behind quilts and other fabrics in African and African-American culture.

Dallas City of Learning's new MOBILE TECH BUS –sponsored in part by Big Thought, City of Dallas, and Dallas Independent School District – stopped by St. Philip's this summer. The bus came complete with lessons in robotics, 3-D printing, design, and so much more.

Our 4th and 5th grade summer scholars enjoyed being Junior Cardiologists and more with Mrs. Barjon. They dissected a cow’s heart and even squid in Science class.
AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS
For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4 – 14 year olds in the southern sector of Dallas.

Staff Spotlight: Coach Robert Green
Coach Robert Green is the one staff member that has been at St. Philip’s longer than Dr. Terry Flowers. Born in Louisiana, Green moved to Dallas in 1960 and became a part of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center family in 1974 – some 42 years ago!
James Anderson, St. Philip’s first Athletic Coach, recruited Green after watching her hit three homeruns at a semi-pro softball game at Kiest Park. She also played semi-pro basketball. Mr. Anderson, who died a few years ago, had to secure approval from coaching organizations in Florida, New York and even California, so Green could coach boys. Over the years, she has coached hundreds of children, some of whom became professional athletes, including NBA star, Chris Bosh.
In 1989, Coach Green decided to solely focus on female teams. She coaches St. Philip’s girls’ 8 through 15-year-old basketball teams to this day. They play everywhere in Texas and have even defeated teams with 12th graders. Because of her gifted coaching, our Saints basketball teams have been top contenders in very competitive tournaments, such as the East Texas Shootout Nationals and the Prime Time National championships. In addition to coaching, Coach Green serves as one of two bus drivers for student field trips and community center programs.
Other than a basketball, Coach Green loves to keep a fishing rod nearby. She has been a winner at fishing, too. Her record, so far, is a 7-pound catfish, which she says fought all the way, but did not know who it was going against.
Q&A With Dallas’ Champion Super Lightweight Boxer Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker
Maurice Hooker is one of thousands of Dallasites that experienced St. Philip’s School and Community Center through its Athletics program as a child. Today, he is an undefeated champion boxer managed by a man he considers one of his heroes, Arnie Verbeek, owner of Maple Avenue Boxing Gym. He recently defended his NABO Junior Welterweight title at Madison Square Garden against Ghislain Maduma. Hooker, who signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports last year, indulged St. Philip’s with a quick Q&A about what it takes to be a champion.
St. Philip’s: Is it true that boxing saved your life?

Hooker: Yes. I grew up in Oak Cliff and Pleasant Grove and it was rough. I got kicked out of high school and had to attend an alternative school. I was always fighting.
My stepdad introduced me to boxing and I just fell in love with it. It helped me control my anger. Boxing gave me discipline, structure and mental and physical toughness. It made me control my anger and kept me in the gym, which was a safe environment.

St. Philip’s: At St. Philip’s, we constantly pour into kids the concept that DESTINY is theirs and “if it is to be, it’s up to me.” What destiny do you hope awaits you at the end of your life’s path?
Hooker: I want to be a world champion in boxing and take that discipline and work ethic to be the best person I can be in life. I want to be an example to my kids to chase your dreams and be the best in what you love to do.
St. Philip’s: What message do you have for young boys and girls who might be facing some of the challenges you faced as a child and teenager?
Hooker: Never give up on your dreams and always believe in yourself. It’s not where you are from but where you are going.
SAINTS ACHIEVEMENTS

Our generous friends of Episcopal School of Dallas “filled the bus” for the second year in a row for St. Philip’s. As a service project for their Homecoming week, the ESD community collected over 1,000 sports items for the children and youth of St. Philip’s. Thank you ESD for your unyielding partnership.
Homecoming 2016, A Mighty Day for St. Philip’s
St. Philip’s’ SAINTS showed up and out on October 8th for our annual Homecoming parade and games. The parade was led by Grand Marshall, Judge Kim Cooks, and included all four of our SAINTS football teams, in addition to our two cheerleader teams and a dance team. Also, each grade level of the School was represented – from PK2 – 6th grade.
The parade began at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Meyers Street, adjacent to Madison High School and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. As always, while St. Philip’s traveled West on MLK Boulevard, attendees to the Texas/OU game, journeyed East towards Fair Park and their big game. A host of 15 Dallas Police Officers assisted in ensuring the safety of our parade participants.
It proved to be a winning day for our teams!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
VOLUNTEERS MAKE OUR WORLD GO ROUND
William Byrd is a fan of St. Philip’s! As the parent of two alumni, he has experienced St. Philip’s mission first-hand. For the last few months, Byrd has volunteered in the role of Project Manager to oversee the installation of Interactive Flat panels in our classrooms, our transition to a new third party technology vendor, and the installation and configuration of a new wireless network and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
…truly a privilege as well as a duty…
“I consider my involvement here during the last two months truly a privilege as well as a duty,” he says. “I grew up in a neighborhood in the northeast not unlike the St. Philip’s area, so I am aware of the difficulties and needs in those communities and in the organizations that serve them.”
For three years, Susan McCombs, a loyal donor and wife of St. Philip’s trustee, David McCombs, has faithfully volunteered two hours every Wednesday at St. Philip’s School and Community Center. The Philanthropy Office has come to consider Susan one of their own and a valuable member of #TeamPhilanthropy. From making donor thank you calls, prepping weekly and major mailings, to assisting with event logistics, McCombs has done it all. And always, always with a smile and sweet spirit!
Lavern Watson has become a familiar face at St. Philip’s. The grandmother of one of our shining alumni, Ms. Watson, regularly volunteers in the School and the Community Center. She assists in the Food Pantry every week and often lends a hand for projects in the School, including Thank-A-Thons and office organization.

Stantec, Victory Church, and Wells Fargo Choose St. Philip’s for Community Service Days
A lot can be accomplished when fifty engineers, forty bankers, and a few dozen church congregants gather for a great cause. St. Philip’s continues to be blessed by the generosity of the employees of local corporations and members of various churches in the area. This fall, STANTEC engineers spent a day on campus making a big impact. They mulched, planted flowers, painted our faculty lounge, organized the school library and helped prep the campus for Homecoming and North Texas Giving Day. Members of VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH call St. Philip’s home, as they hold their weekly worship service in our chapel. Victory’s members have pitched in several times in the last few months, particularly with prayer walks and neighborhood clean-up and beautification projects in the immediate neighborhood. Finally, our dear friends at WELLS FARGO spent their service day at St. Philip’s assisting in the library, Our Community Pantry, and by sprucing up our playgrounds and athletic field. To top it all off, the Wells Fargo team ended the day with a big surprise for St. Philip’s – a $10,000 check! We are grateful for our friends who so willingly share their time, talent, and treasure with the St. Philip’s ministry.

ALUMNI NEWS

Two Alumni Among St. Philip’s New Staff
St. Philip’s is ecstatic to have two of its alumni among its new staff. Christopher Byrd (Class of 2003) and Taylor Hall (Class of 2002) are once again gracing the halls of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Mr. Byrd serves as our Operations Manager on a part-time basis and Ms. Hall is Assistant to the Perot Family Headmaster, Dr. Terry Flowers. “Hearing my former teachers call me Ms. Hall definitely threw me at first,” Taylor explains. “Honestly, it feels like I’m back home. I’m so excited to work at a place that has done so much for me! I just want to pay it forward.”
After graduating St. Philip’s in 2002, Taylor matriculated to The Hockaday School with a few other St. Philip’s classmates. From Hockaday, she attended Texas A&M University where she eventually earned an M.A. in Public Service & Administration. Mr. Byrd is currently attending the University of Texas at Arlington working toward a Master of Education in Mind, Brain, and Education. Prior to Taylor’s position with St. Philip’s, Christopher juggled a dual position as Dr. Flowers’ assistant and Operations Manager for a few months. Needless to say, he’s happy to be focused on one role.
“It’s not easy being in school and working but I’m up for the challenge and feel blessed to have the opportunity to serve at St. Philip’s,” Byrd says. He attended Parish Episcopal School after graduating St. Philip’s and graduated from Lake Highlands High School. Christopher holds a B.A. in International Relations & Classical Studies with a minor in Spanish from Austin College.
Both Byrd and Hall believe St. Philip’s laid a solid foundation for them, not only academically, but spiritually and emotionally. “St. Philip’s taught me to be a proud, confident, yet gracious and humble servant of God,” Taylor says. As alumni, they also feel more invested in their new roles with St. Philip’s. They are in awe of learning how everything works here. “Now, as an employee, I understand that everything that happens at St. Philip’s is a labor of love,” Ms. Hall explains. “All of my co-workers are true servants of God.”

Life After St. Philip’s – Bianca Anderson, Class of 1999
St. Philip’s alum, Bianca Anderson, sees St. Philip’s as a hub of greatness. A unique place she believes will be a catalyst for radical change around the world due to the quality of confident, spiritually grounded leaders the school is developing. In many ways, Anderson should count herself among the game changers as she was recently named Director of Dallas-Fort Worth region’s BORDER CROSSERS, a nonprofit organization based in New York that trains and empowers educators to dismantle patterns of racism and injustice in schools and communities.
Locally, BORDER CROSSERS has trained over five hundred educators to build classrooms and schools grounded in racial justice.
“I’ve always looked at things through a racial justice lens,” Ms. Anderson, whose siblings also attended St. Philip’s, explains.
After graduating Duncanville High School in 2005, she thought Communication would be her path to impact the world for the better. While attending MiZou, she took a mission trip to Ghana and God changed her heart for what she would pursue.

“God showed me I had a gift for working with children while I was in Africa and I knew I wanted to serve through education instead.”
Upon returning to Dallas, Bianca substituted at St. Philip’s for a few months until gaining her first teaching job at AW Brown Charter School in Oak Cliff. Most recently, she was the Middle School English and Middle School Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion at Greenhill School.
“Race has a lot to do with how kids experience school,” she says. Bianca published a searing piece in Jet Magazine earlier this year entitled “The Secret Life of Black Girls.” In her role with Border Crossers, she will manage operations, fundraising, and a team of local trainers committed to liberating and empowering schools and other educational spaces in D/FW. This position blends the best of two worlds for her – education and justice.
“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t know I was black, beautiful and a child of God. This is the gift of St. Philip’s,” Anderson explains. “I attribute so much of this mindset to St. Philip’s because I saw leaders who looked like me and older students who I emulated who looked like me, at such a young age.” To this day, Bianca counts former St. Philip’s principal, Sherril English, as a mentor, and stays in touch with classmates who are positively impacting their corner of the world.
What a blessing it is to see one of our shining alumni walking so proudly and effectively in her DESTINY!
Bianca Anderson, Class of ‘99
God knows best We stay humble... keep our hands open and not a fist
Because in the end there’s no need to fight it
The
choice isn’t ours, it’s God’s divine mission
Much love and light to our newest ancestors
We all love you and will miss you dearly!

Sandra Kay Winkley-Pikes (1959 – 2016)
Sandra Pikes stole the hearts of St. Philip’s students and faculty/staff in recent years as one of our most sought after substitute teachers. Teaching was in Pikes’ blood. She was a retired teacher in DISD but could not fully give up the classroom. For two years, St. Philip’s offered her the freedom and flexibility to continue to inspire and instruct young minds. Ms. Pikes was a beautiful, refreshing light among us. She will continue to hold a special place in our hearts and memories.

Edward Snyder (1936 – 2016)
Ed Snyder and his wife, Gloria, a St. Philip’s trustee, opened their hearts to St. Philip’s over twenty years ago. Snyder’s great loves included his soulmate of 57 years, Gloria, law, and sports. In fact, the Snyders have literally followed the Texas Rangers across the country for decades as loyal, season subscribers. They are also huge fans of the Cowboys. Other than his family, Mr. Snyder’s fans included his fellow lawyers, who honored him in 1980 by electing him President of the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. During his five decades of law practice, he humbly and effectively touched the lives of many people. He was also a member of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, affectionately known as "the Fig."

Dan Stansbury, Sr. (1932 – 2016)
Dan Stansbury, Sr. initiated his family’s three generation friendship with St. Philip’s School and Community Center nearly thirty years ago. Because of his leadership and compassionate generosity, his family is deemed a Legacy Family with St. Philip’s, having made a tremendous impact on the ministry over the years. Mr. Stansbury was considered a consummate gentleman and a good Christian man. He attended SMU where he earned a law degree and holds the record in Tennis for the highest all-time winning percentage singles, going 14-0 in 1953! Dan was active in University Park where he served on the Board of Adjustment for fourteen years and the City Council. Additionally, he was active civically with the YMCA, SMU Alumni Association and his church, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where his family were founding members.

WHY I GIVE
Donors Double Their Impact with Matching Gifts
St. Philip’s is grateful for the generous and compassionate support of hundreds of donors and volunteers each year. Every gift of time and treasure counts! It is exciting to see donors take advantage of corporate matching gift opportunities. Many people are unaware that their employer may match financial and even volunteer contributions to local non-profits. A matching gift is an easy way to double your impact on an organization close to your heart.

Luther Harris, a former St. Philip’s board chair and alumni parent, has participated in his company’s matching gift program for well over a decade. Each year, he makes his annual gift to St. Philip’s and Texas Instrument’s happily matches it 1:1. Some corporations may match up to 2:1. Former trustee and longtime friend of St. Philip’s, Ginger Brown, also has her annual donation matched by her company, Wells Fargo, every year. Finally, alumni parent and active volunteer in our Community Center’s athletic program, Belinda Averette’s company, Blue Cross Blue Shield, matched her significant volunteer hours each year. Her devoted volunteer hours translated into a four figure donation to St. Philip’s annually.
“We give to St. Philip’s because it is like no other place,” says Luther Harris. “Unmatched educational environment? Check! Extracurricular activities? Name it. Football? Dance? Music? Basketball? Lacrosse? Absolutely! But what makes it the place worthy of our investment? In St. Philip’s, my wife and I see the absolute embodiment of God’s love, children and community. Our support for St. Philip’s reflects our personal commitment to the academic and spiritual development of Dallas - the place where we live and work. We believe in St. Philip’s!”
To see if your employer offers a matching gift program, speak to your HR representative or visit www.doubletheimpact.com or www.matchinggifts.com.
Why We Support St. Philip’s Family Annual Fund – The Lax Family
“Our children are academically strong, and we are confident that it is the result of many prayers, work at home and the foundation they receive here at St. Philip’s. The cost of tuition may be a sacrifice, but I feel that to know about this opportunity and forsake our children of it, would be sacrificing their future…GOD FIRST, Academics SECOND, is why I GIVE.”

DAY PARTICIPATION BY THE NUMBERS
Faculty/Staff Students Trustees

St. Philip’s Goes Platinum On North Texas Giving Day
To close out our 70th Anniversary year of ministry, St. Philip’s challenged its community to help the organization reach a $70,000 Platinum goal on North Texas Giving Day. Thanks to the support of so many of our friends, faculty/staff, trustees, parents, and even students, we exceeded our hefty goal, raising $79,686 toward our Family Annual Fund! For the first time, our student body was invited to participate by making a contribution of 70 cents to their wonderful school for its 70th Anniversary. We are starting today to teach them the value of “giving back”.
We held a block party the afternoon of North Texas Giving Day and raised $7,000 in seven minutes, with the support of a matching gift from trustees Abigail and Andrew Sinwell. All in all, the St. Philip’s community showed their love for St. Philip’s in a generous and significant way. Additional matching gifts were made by Pennie and Robert Pitre, alumni parents and current grandparents; Andrea and Luther Harris, alumni parents; and Dr. Demetra Jones, parent of a current student and St. Philip’s alum.
First year parents, Nichole and Antoine Rogers, enthusiastically showed their support of their daughter’s new school by making a contribution to St. Philip’s on North Texas Giving Day. They also had their gift matched by their employer the same week – thus doubling their impact! “We love St. Philip’s and want the teachers to keep up the good work,” Mrs. Rogers says.
We had a dynamic group of parent captains this year that included:
#TeamEarlyChildhood
Chaka DeSouza
Katrina and William Keyes
Rosalind and Anthony Lewis
#TeamLowerSchool
Latasha and Kyle Vaughn
Corine Adams-Watts
#TeamMiddleSchool
Tominko and James Musco
Farrah and Quentin Draper

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016
A Message from Our New Board Chair
Everyone who visits St. Philip’s experiences it. In fact, it overwhelms you!
You see it in the faces of our pre- kindergartners, you hear it in the recitation of the creed and you comprehend its magic through the eagerness of 6th graders to solve complex math problems. While walking the grounds, you quickly realize that the “it” carries over to the daycare, medical clinic, senior citizen center, community food choice pantry, sports hub, as well as the aquaponics garden. What is “it”? “It” is what I like to call the “St. Philip’s spirit” or “the St. Philip’s way ” which emanates from the faith and commitment of our teachers, staff and volunteers.
The St. Philip’s way is best captured through our effective partnerships and collaborations. The impact of last year’s successful relationships yielded historic results. We raised a record 2.1 million dollars to fund annual operations and, in its inaugural year, the WE BELIEVE Capital Campaign garnered 10 million dollars in commitments. The Perot Family endowed the Headmaster’s position with a generous 2 million dollar gift. Furthermore, we exceeded our goals for the Destiny Awards Luncheon, including gaining wide-spread visibility throughout Dallas. Dr. Flowers received the prestigious J. Erik Jonsson Award from SMU’s Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics & Public Responsibility. In summary, 2015-2016 was a banner year. We achieved these milestones “the St. Philip’s way” by bringing together dedicated leaders from the business, education and philanthropic worlds to support our vision.

Building on last year’s success, we started the 2016-2017 year soaring past our North Texas Giving Day goals. Currently, the St. Philip’s leadership team and the Trustee Board are well on the way to implementing a strategic plan to address growth and sustainability. The second year of the WE BELIEVE Capital Campaign includes an aggressive goal to move closer to a future of greater impact in the community and the city. Additionally, we continue to lead the way on initiatives that support the surrounding neighborhood’s transformation and revitalization.
Having stepped out on faith, our goals are more ambitious and challenging this year. However, “the St. Philip’s way” means putting faith into action. Thank you to those who have partnered with us. I invite others to visit St. Philip’s School and Community Center where you too will experience “it”.
Graciously,

Kathy Hubbard
St. Philip’s Foundation Report
The St. Philip’s School and Community Center Foundation was established as a non-profit 501(c) corporation in March 1997 to support St. Philip’s School and Community Center (“SPSCC”) by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions and bequests to SPSCC. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long-term goals, purposes and objectives of SPSCC.
The Foundation’s assets have now grown to more than $10 million which enables it to provide more than $475,000 of direct support to SPSCC’s operating budget. This represents more than 10% of the school’s current operating budget. As we look ahead to the success of the WE BELIEVE capital campaign, we expect the Foundation’s assets to increase annually as gifts to the campaign are received. This will further enhance the operating support which the Foundation will provide to SPSCC, with particular emphasis on the school’s Tuition Assistance program. Currently, more than half of the school’s students receive some form of Tuition Assistance. SPSCC is committed to providing a high-quality education which is accessible to moderate and low income families living in the southern sector. With your continued financial support, St. Philip’s will continue to be a beacon of hope for neighborhood families seeking a highquality education for their children.
Sincerely,

Tom Halsey, St. Philip’s Foundation Chair

St Philips has all of the things my family desires when it comes to ensuring my son is successful in life. A strong and rigorous academic program, a solid Christian biblical teaching foundation and a loving family environment. We see the benefits of St Philips for whenever we see Myles, we see St Philips.

Ways to Support St. Philip’s
TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.
Consider Employee Corporate Giving
St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).
Double Your Impact with Matching Gifts
Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.
Planned Giving
This is an opportunity for you to leave a lasting legacy at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy.
Securities
Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.
Shop and Share
St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.
The Gift of Time
From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.
