What are we learning this month?

October has arrived! Hopefully, we are all beginning to sense the seasonal shift, welcoming a refreshing cool breeze amidst our warmer days. October holds a special charm in locations where the leaves transform, showcasing vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues. When I asked my preschool students about their preferred season, their answers varied: “Summer for swimming! Fall as I like to dress up! Winter for Christmas and Jesus’ birth! Spring for the blossoming flowers!” My response remained the same each year—I can’t choose a favorite season because each one brings a feeling of new beginnings, hope, and promise from God. His presence, control, and beauty are ever-present, revealing themselves to us in unique ways. I hope you enjoy the October issue of Sprouts and try the fun crafts and yummy recipe!

WHY DO LEAVES

CHANGE COLOR? Believe it or not, the change in colors of leaves during the Fall season is all about light and temperature! The shorter days and decreased temperature in the air cause a decrease in production of chlorophyll, the substance that gives leaves their green color. We are left with beautiful hues of yellow, red, and orange in exchange!

Fall Leaf Collage

Pumpkin Spice Play-Doh

1. Collect lots of leaves of different colors.

2. Get some paper and a glue stick (if a parent can help, use a hot glue gun).

3. Choose a layout for all your leaves.

4. Glue down the leaves and allow to dry.

5. Hang up and show your fam!

1. Mix 2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour, 3/4 cup of salt, 4 tsp.

Cream of tartar in a large pot, 1 tsp. Orange food coloring, and 2 tbsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice.

2. Add in two cups of warm water and 2 tbsp. Of coconut oil.

3. With a parent, continuing stirring while on medium heat until all ingredients are combined and dough starts to form.

4. Let cool and enjoy! (Not for eating!)

Fall Leaf Crown 1. Choose some pretty Fall leaves from outside.

2. Cut strips of paper and ask a parent to measure it to your head.

3. Staple or glue the strips together to make a circle.

4. Glue leaves around the circle.

5. Wear the crown!

Sprout Pals Meet Cody!

Cody is the macho yellow lab you would love to meet! He likes to be in charge at his house and keep his sister, Stevie, safe (Stevie appeared in the September magazine)! He has two speeds—on and off! Cody is incredibly smart, loves to compete with Stevie, and is the king of retrieving any stick you throw! Not only is he quite a handsome chap, he is loving to all who meet him and his owners think he is the sweetest guy around!

Sprouts Pumpkin Pancakes Ingredients

Directions

1 cup all purpose flour

1. Mix all dry ingredients together in one bowl (flour, baking powder, and salt).

2. Melt butter. In a separate bowl, combine maple syrup, melted butter, pumpkin, milk and egg.

3. Once combined, make a well in the dry ingredients, and gradually add in your wet ingredients to dry ingredients.

4. Mix until combined.

5. Heat pan to medium heat adding in cooking spray or butter to avoid sticking.

6. Pour pancake batter into pan to form small circles. Flip when ready.

7. Enjoy!

Shoshana’s little brother fell when he was riding his bike. She felt bad for him and got him a bandage to help out.

Sophia called her friend mean and felt bad about it afterward. She thought about how she would feel if someone called her mean, and it didn’t feel good. She decided it was a good time to apologize.

The class wasn’t listening to Mrs. Kinnon, and it made Juliette sad to see her teacher frustrated. She tried to help by reminding her friends to listen to the teacher.

Niko saw a man on the side of the road who didn’t have a home. He asked his mom how they can help, so they volunteered at the homeless shelter the next weekend.

Jesus Heals the Leper JESUS’ EMPATHY FOR OTHERS In the book of Mark, chapter 1, Jesus spends time going to different villages preaching and telling parables to people. He also found many people who needed healing. During the time the Bible was written, many people suffered from diseases because many types of medicine had not been invented yet. Jesus and his disciples (followers) found a man on the streets of Galilee that had leprosy. Leprosy is a skin condition that can be very painful, and the man asked if Jesus was willing to make him clean. The Bible says Jesus was “moved with compassion” for the man, and said to him, “I am willing. Be made clean.” The leprosy immediately left the man and his disease was gone. Jesus healed many people throughout the Bible, and displayed empathy for those he met. Jesus could feel what they were feeling and healed them.

In this edition of the Great Outdoors, the Sprouts Scouts learn about empathy and what it means!

The Sprouts Scouts Try out for the team The Sprouts Scouts were all trying out for the basketball team this year! They were so excited because they loved playing together on the weekends and after school, but they were finally old enough to try out for the school team! As 3rd graders, they were ready for the challenge.

Kacie and Sarah had been practicing their dribbling with some repetitive drills and had really improved their skills! Asher and Oliver had been shooting 50 free throws every night to perfect their form. Gabe and Darcy practiced a lay-up, some may call an easier shot, but there was a certain way to get it just right!

When the names were posted the next day at school, all the kids rushed to see if they made the team. Asher and Oliver high-fived, Kacie, Gabe, and Darcy jumped in the air—they all the made the team! Everyone was chosen, except Sarah. Sarah was heartbroken. She felt left out. She felt like she didn’t belong with the other Sprouts.

Darcy could see how upset Sarah was and it hurt to see her friend upset. She remembered her Sunday school teacher had told her about empathy and feeling how others felt. She had an idea!

She went up to the coach to see if there was It was time for the try-outs and the Sprouts Scouts another way Sarah could still participate in were ready! They lined up, followed directions, and did basketball this year. The coach loved Darcy’s idea! their warm-up. The coach blew the whistle and it was time for them to start a scrimmage (playing against Darcy told the other Scouts the plan. They went each other even though they are on the same team). to Sarah and asked if she would be their team manager this year and come to practices and help There were 20 kids total trying out for the team, them get better. She could still be a part of the including the Sprouts Scouts. The coach let the kids team, just in a different way. Sarah really liked know only 15 people would be able to make the this idea and felt honored to still be a part of the team,which meant 5 kids were not going to be able to team this year! play on the team this year. The Scouts knew this going into the tryouts that there was a chance they would be disappointed. They all did their very best.
