What makes this Waubesa Shores Condo a home?

Kim and Randy wanted to furnish the space with furniture created by local artisans to celebrate Wisconsin. The only firm request was the incredibly DESIGNER TIP Consider your space and environment: the living and dining room are entirely furnished with indoor/outdoor fabrics. This way, no one has to worry about sitting on furniture with a wet swimsuit!

What is your favorite watering hole on the lake?

The Edgewater is a historic place that has only improved with its recent renovations. I love pulling up to the dock and enjoying a drink at The Boathouse —usually a gin and tonic with two limes­—and some of their award-winning cheese curds.

Where do you like to stop and drop anchor?

Picnic Point Bay it great for swimming, and has a beautiful natural beach shoreline.

How were you introduced to vintage wood boats?

When I was a kid, my family would take trips to northern Wisconsin where we would see wooden boats. My dad, who grew up near Lake Winnebago, would tell me that when he was a kid, wooden boats were all anybody had. The beauty of these boats always stuck with me and I knew that someday I would like to have one of my own.

Can you tell us a little about your Sea King?

What do you love most about the Madison area lakes?

When I’m out on the lakes, specifically Lake Mendota, even though I’m still in the middle of the city, I have the feeling that I’m escaping to a quiet, relaxing place. It’s a great way to “get away” without really leaving home.

Which lake do you enjoy boating on most, why?

I grew up going to Spring Harbor Beach and Picnic Point, so boating on Lake Mendota brings back great memories from my childhood.

I found my Sea King in the front yard of a home on the west side of Madison.

It was in “ok” shape and was listed at $1000. I offered $800 cash and the gentleman selling said “sold.” The boat still has an original ‘58 City of Madison boat license. My grandfather, John Tye Sr., was a sales manager at Mercury Marine in the ‘50’s. He helped roll out the idea of boat engines being painted in vibrant colors. The engine on my Sea King follows this pattern with its “double red” paint scheme.
