President’s Message On behalf of our Committee, I would like to welcome our existing members back for the year 2015, and also welcome our new members who have joined our club and trust this year will be an enjoyable one. Please remember the idea of our club is for you and your dog to enjoy the pleasure of training together and you will have fun along the way.

Australia Day 2015 A little cooler than most of our Australia Days as normally we are performing on hot dry days, but rain was expected. After setting up our cabanas our first demo was programmed for 10.30 a.m. After initial practice we performed our obedience section and then moved to the agility. Our demo was very well received and the public enjoyed our agility demo immensely. Our second demo was to be at 12.30 p.m. and the rain came – a little through the morning but as our time approached it became steadier and as the professionals’say ‘the show must go on’ so we did. Not as many people at our second demo but the dogs still did their thing. Our obedience demo team consisted of Diane (Sunny), Noeleen (Suzie), Cath (Lexie), Vicki (Kaos), Chris (Annie), Leanne (Lena)and our reserve Gee (Lucy).

Our agility demo team was Nicola (Puzzle/Crumpet), Leanne (Eisha), Diane (Sunny), Chris (Annie/Suzie).Our club wishes to thank all the above performers for their time and effort especially our members who decided to have a go for the first time in the public arena. Our thanks also go to Ron who packed and carried our gear for the day and Leanne who made the flags for the dogs to wear, which incidentally was quite a conversation piece around the ring.

Paralysis Ticks -Paralysis ticks are blood sucking parasites that attach to animals and release a toxin in their saliva that can cause paralysis and death. These ticks are only found in a 2- kilometre band that follows the eastern coastline of Australia, and in the central highlands of Tasmania. Tick paralysis affects up to 100,000 domestic animals annually, with up to 10,000 companion animals being referred to veterinary surgeons for treatment, so it is an

important condition for people and their pets that live in the paralysis tick area.

-Signs of Tick Paralysis Animals affected by ticks typically have loss of appetite and voice, become weak in their back legs and uncoordinated. The paralysis extends to affect the whole animal which becomes completely limp and flaccid. There can be drooling and vomiting, and eventually the breathing is affected leading to distress and death.

Symptoms to watch: Loss of coordination in the hind legs (wobbly or not being able to get up change in voice or bark retching, coughing or vomiting loss of appetite progressive paralysis to include the forelegs difficulty breathing or rapid breathing Treatment - The first step is to remove all ticks ensuring that all parts of the tick, especially the mouth parts, are extracted. Tick antivenom is recommended in cases where significant paralysis is evident. It has been shown to bring about complete resolution of paralysis even in extremely severe cases.

Survival Rate A recent survey found that only about 5% of dogs taken to the vet died from tick paralysis and younger dogs were more likely to survive.

Protection from Ticks Prevention of tick paralysis is based on avoiding bush areas, especially in the tick season (year round in the north, and spring to autumn in the south) and thoroughly searching your pet every day for ticks. This gives you 2 or 3 chances of finding a tick before serious tick paralysis occurs, since the tick must generally be attached for at least 3 days before causing signs.
