Director’s Message
I often say that the magic of art—and especially the art we show at the Springville Museum of Art—is its ability to help you connect to something bigger than yourself. The best artworks, in my opinion, help us feel connected to a larger human experience, a shared humanity.
That is one of my favorite things about our Annual Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah exhibition: it specifically asks artists to bring us their works that focus on themes of spirituality and religion—works, that ask the big questions about what it means to be human and where we find meaning in the complexity of life.
Each year, I’m amazed by the diverse ways Utah artists engage with these questions. This year’s exhibition showcases over 270 works, each offering a distinct perspective on spirituality. Together, these pieces foster empathy, contemplation, and connection across backgrounds and beliefs.
Our jurors faced a challenging task, with a record-breaking 913 submissions, and our first digital jurying process for a professional show. Salma Djalal, Michael Hall, Madeline Rupard, and I each ranked the pieces and then collaborated over Zoom to select the final works. Michael Hall and Madeline Rupard came in person to choose juror’s awards and our Collection Committee recommended purchase awards to the SMAA Board.
Thank you for visiting and experiencing this show in person. I hope these artworks and this exhibition foster both beauty and contemplation for each visitor—helping us recognize our shared struggle in understanding what it means to be human.

Jurors
Salma Djalal
Madeline Rupard
Salma is a marketing professional based in Salt Lake City. As the Director of Marketing for the Emerald Project, she is dedicated to fostering community engagement and inspiring young Muslims to share their diverse experiences. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of Wuruud, a creative collective that provides a platform for Muslim artists and creatives.
Salma’s passion for storytelling through art drives her commitment to cultivating inclusive spaces. Additionally, Salma volunteers as an Islamic studies teacher and administrative assistant at Khadeeja Islamic Center, channeling her creativity into various artistic endeavors.
Michael Aaron Hall is a professional sculptor working in bronze and marble. During Michael’s 19 years of sculpting, he has received several awards for his work, including multiple awards in the ARC International Salon and several awards at salons and exhibits at the Springville Museum of Art. He has also received first place in the National Sculpture Society’s (NSS) figurative competition in 2014 and the Alex J. Ettl award in 2017.
Michael is an elected fellow member of the National Sculpture Society and the ambassador for the NSS Utah Community. He is also a current member of the Portrait Society of America and has served as a judge and juror at both local and national competitions, including the NSS 90th Annual Awards Exhibition.
Madeline Rupard is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Brigham Young University. She received an MFA in Painting (‘19) from Pratt Institute and a BFA in Studio Art (‘16) from Brigham Young University, where she returned as a Visiting Professor from 2020-2021. Her work has appeared in Booooooom, New American Paintings, and at Lorin Gallery in Los Angeles and Room 57 Gallery in New York. Rupard considers the American landscape as one who has moved through it frequently and traveled across long distances. She paints to describe contradictions: the suburban and the sublime, the sacred and the mundane, and the ancient and man-made running up against each other.
