High School Art Show

The SMA acknowledges that this exhibition is taking place on land that is sacred to the indigenous peoples of Utah. Tribes within Utah include the Utes, Goshutes, Paiutes, Shoshone, Navajo, and Hopi. We honor them, their ancestors, and their physical presence in our state today.
* Only a selection of artworks are illustrated; a complete list of the exhibition can be found in the back of the catalog. Colors of images may vary from original artwork.
The Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show at the Springville Museum of Art honors the best high school artists in the state for their talent, creativity, and dedication. Since 1971, the show has served to educate youth and prepare students for professional roles. The show encourages young artists by providing a forum for their work, awarding outstanding talent and creativity, and fostering involvement in the arts.
Unique in both scope and stature, the Utah All-State High School Art Show is one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the nation. This year, 102 schools across the state entered 1064 works by 908 students. Of these entries, 326 were selected for display in the exhibition. In the submission process, students include source images, sketches, and artist statements about their work. A panel of arts professionals judged the artworks on both technical quality and conceptual design. Those works selected for Jurors' Awards represent the most skillfully executed and original pieces submitted. Congressional Awards are intended to represent life throughout Utah and demonstrate the quality of work being done across the state. These awards are selected by Utah Congressional representatives.
Now in its 52nd year, the Annual Utah AllState High School Art Show continues to serve the very important purpose of fostering and showcasing the tremendous talent, creativity, and efforts of Utah’s young artists. The exhibition is also a tribute to the dedication of professional art teachers throughout the State of Utah. We thank them for their tireless efforts.
We are grateful to the many partners and sponsors who contribute to the exhibition and provide additional opportunities for these student artists. All school programs at the Springville Museum of Art are made possible with support from the Utah State Legislature through Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools (POPS), in partnership with the Utah State Board of Education. In addition, each year the Governor’s Office and Lt. Governor’s Office, the Utah State House of Representatives, and the Utah State Senate honor award-winning artists and the Governor declares the month of March “Utah Youth Arts Month.” One work is selected from each of Utah’s Congressional Districts to hang in a national show at the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The Utah Senate, under the direction of President Adams, selects their visual arts awards through the All-State High School Art Show and awards several scholarships.
The David O. McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University selects works to be displayed on BYU campus in connection with a scholarship award. Other special awards and scholarships are given to Utah’s art students. Finally, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums is a long-standing partner of this exhibition, as works are selected to be part of an annual traveling exhibition throughout Utah. Representatives Stephen Whyte, Norman Thurston, and Marsha Judkins, staff from the Lt. Governor's Office, and Senate Representatives, including President and Susan Adams, Aundrea Peterson, Olivia Craig, and Senator Jen Plumb, help coordinate the student's visit and recognition at the Capitol.

Kelsi Kinder is a young artist with an ever-growing fascination for art. Her work focuses on human connections to objects and spaces, as well as the meaning of color. She describes the feeling of a scene through vibrancy, levels of development, and careful choice of medium. Kelsi uses art as a way to relive stories and moments in her life through the long process of creating the art piece. She finds comfort in spending time thinking deeply about what she creates and who she is creating it for. Alongside visual art, Kelsi is also a guitarist. She plays in two groups: a jazz band and a classical guitar ensemble. She has an immense appreciation for the guitar and finds it to be a calming alternative to visual arts.
Kelsi plans on studying environmental architecture in college, inspired by her dad’s job as a civil engineer and her love for science, which still allows her to create art but in a new medium. She is currently a senior in high school at Utah Arts Academy and is also studying at Utah Tech, but plans to further her education at Colorado University in Boulder.
Born in Salt Lake City, Samuel Meikle is inspired by the bold strokes and vibrant hues of Western American art. Inspired by Maynard Dixon's clouds and LeConte Stewart's quiet vistas, Meikle continues to tell the story of the West.
Meikle's summers are spent in the desert and mountains of Utah. These scenes inspired his artistic taste, as he took art courses at Hillside Middle and Highland High schools. He also spends extensive time in extracurricular art classes, where he hones his skills and experiments with various techniques.
His art attempts to capture the essence of the West, from vast vistas to intimate details, which has garnered Meikle acclaim. His work has been showcased in galleries in Colorado and Utah. His work was also included in Colorado Mesa University's prestigious high school art show. In 2021, Meikle earned second place in the esteemed Utah PTA Reflections competition.
Today, his artwork can be found at the Sandina Federal Credit Union in New Mexico and Highland High School. Samuel Meikle’s landscape paintings continue to highlight the beauty and spirit of the land through color and design.

Clark Goldsberry has been teaching drawing, painting, graphic design, and photography at American Fork High School for the past 9 years. He has a BFA in studio art and a master's degree in Art Education. He is also a doctoral student, currently working on a PhD in art pedagogy and curriculum theory. He loves learning new techniques and processes, traveling, baking sourdough bread, and going on hikes with his wife Bayley and dog Fig.
"Mr. Goldsberry has truly impacted my path as an artist and keeps me inspired to create."
-Anya Fazulyanov, Current Student
Lydia Williams is currently a Junior at Sky View High School. She was born and raised in Smithfield and is the youngest of five daughters. She loves spending time with her family and loves doing anything active, whether that be running, hiking, biking, or rock climbing. She ran cross country for her school and currently plays ultimate frisbee. Lydia has always had a passion for art, and loves experimenting with different mediums such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, and watercolor. She has only recently started oil painting, but it is her favorite medium yet.
After high school, Lydia plans to attend Utah State University and is considering pursuing a career in the medical field as a medical assistant or physical therapist. Her dream is to travel the world and continue painting the scenes from her travels.

Before I created this piece, the idea of doing a self portrait had always made me uncomfortable. I was nervous I wouldn't be able to make it look like me. Even more, I was scared it would look like me and I would be dissatisfied with what I saw. Initially when I was assigned to do this self portrait, I felt incredibly intimidated. Through completing the assignment, I found that there’s something quite meditative about drawing yourself. I appreciate my features in a new way and feel less threatened by the idea of creating a self portrait.

My piece depicts a traditional Vietnamese dragon. As a first-generation Vietnamese-American, I have heard countless tales of my Vietnamese heritage. In Vietnamese folklore, the people of Vietnam are the children of a royal dragon and a fairy. Dragons are not only the protectors of the people, but also symbols of prosperity that bring rain and river waters to the fields. These dragons inspire me today because they remind me of my late grandfather who was named after a dragon and was a Vietnam War veteran. Even until his unfortunate passing, he would bring food and gifts to all of his grandchildren. He also protected his children during the Vietnam War, ensuring their safe passage to America.
