5 jobs that aren’t being filled BY DAN COOK BENEFITSPRO At first glance, the list of job postings provided by CareerBuilder that compares the number of jobs posted vs. number of positions filled suggests we should all become nurses or software developers. But a closer look reveals that certain jobs are going begging to a much greater degree than are nursing and software posts. CareerBuilder looked at job postings for 20 job descriptions requiring college degrees and reported the number of positions that were filled. Based on raw numbers, registered nurses, software developers and sales managers reported the highest number of jobs that were not filled. The lowest “gap” positions were computer and information systems managers, mechanical engineers and HR managers. But these numbers can be misleading. One-third of nursing jobs were filled, but just 9 percent of marketing manager jobs were filled. The following lists suggest that perhaps marketing managers and information securities analysts are in much higher demand than are nurses, software developers and sales managers — although there could be other factors at play than the
availability of talented job seekers. Five positions that experience a higher percentage of job postings filled each month than most: • FINANCIAL MANAGERS: 36 percent • NURSES: 33 percent • SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS: 27 percent • HR MANAGERS: 26 percent • SALES MANAGERS: 24 percent Five positions that experience a lower percentage of job postings filled each month compared to most: • MARKETING MANAGERS: 9 percent • INFORMATION SECURITIES ANALYSTS: 11 percent • OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS: 16 percent • SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS: 18 percent • MEDICAL/HEALTH SERVICES MANAGERS: 19 percent
