MDA’s summer camp program provides thousands of kids with muscle disease a life-changing experience at one of our nearly 80 weeklong summer camps. These kids look forward to summer camp year-round. Since its launch, ERA Shields has proudly watched The Arts MDA Downtown Art Show develop compelling interest and support from the local community and 2015 is starting strong once again. This year attendees will enjoy cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres while at the same time mingling and reveling in the evening’s events and entertainment. Along with the opportunity for attendees to consider a variety of local artistry, the artists have the chance to promote themselves. During the evening, live and silent auctions will feature a number of unique items graciously donated by the artists all of whom have agreed to contribute a portion of their sales that night to the fundraiser. One of the most popular activities each year is the wine pull. Over 400 bottles of wine are generously donated by local individuals, wine vendors and wineries. While not always from Colorado Springs, wine has also been donated from Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen and last year, each bottle of wine was valued at $20 or more. Without fail, the highpoint of the evening each year comes from local families who have been touched by MDA and are on hand to share their inspiring personal stories. “These families are so positive and

AROUND THE HOUSE: Ceiling fans help A/C do its job

Dear Ken: We have a ranch style home with air conditioning and we sleep downstairs. My husband wants to run the ceiling fans upstairs. What do you think? – Pat

I’m with him. Ceiling fans can help the A/C system do its job more efficiently. How? If you run the fans on low speed blowing downward, they will force the hot ceiling air down toward the return air grilles so it can make another round trip through the furnace more quickly. In a ranch style home with an open stairway, the cold air migrates downstairs anyway because it is dense. So it’s important to rebalance the vents in the summertime. Close off all but one or two of them downstairs and

open all of them on the main level (but never close more than 25% of the total number of vents in the house no matter what — otherwise, the A/C may freeze up). You can reverse this procedure in the winter to counteract the hot air accumulation upstairs. Two story homes are much more difficult to cool. Here, too, a ceiling fan is invaluable. Install one in the upstairs hallway ceiling as close as possible to the stairwell and run it on high speed on hot afternoons, for the same reason. Sometimes builders omit the return air grilles on the second floor. If that’s the case, the heating and cooling up there will never be satisfactory. An HVAC contractor can run another return air duct up through the garage. It’s not terribly expensive, plus the comfort improvements are incalculable. Dear Ken: I’m in trouble. My low boy

water heater in the crawl space is failing, and I now find out they don’t make these in gas fired models anymore. Should I dig a pit for a new regular height one, or use electric? – Robert You’re right. So-called stubby water heaters are only available in electric types now. You could dig a hole in the dirt to install a new tall gas model, but this is fraught with several pitfalls. The pit will have to be wide and deep enough so the new water heater can be slid across the dirt and eased into the hole. Also, the dirt will cause trouble if not constrained. It will gradually slide into the pit and impinge against the tank. Plus, dust and dirt will be drawn inside each time the heater fires up. Bottom line? You’ll have to install some sort of retaining wall down there, and that’s a hassle I want no part of!

That leaves you with one choice: a low boy electric water heater. That would be my choice. The only downside is hiring an electrician to run a 240 volt wire and circuit in there. Otherwise, it will slide right into the same space as the old one. Wrap a blanket around it to offset the increased operating costs and you’re back in business. Dear Ken: I have 2 outside faucets that drip all the time. Are they fixed the same way as regular ones? – Andy Basically, yes. You’ll need a couple of pipe wrenches to take off the nut that holds the faucet (called a hose bibb) together. It's the packing nut, and it's just behind the faucet handle itself. You can then pull the long faucet stem out of the opening. On its end will be a traditional rubber washer just like

any other faucet setup. If your house is older, you might want to replace the typical flat washer with a cone-shaped one. That will ensure a better fit against the inside seat and so will be less prone to drips. Outside faucets are pretty inexpensive. So, an alternative here is to unscrew the whole assembly, buy a new and replace it. Simply apply some Teflon tape to the new threads, screw it back in, and you’re done. That's not always an option, since some faucets are actually soldered into place; so check which style you have first by looking at the inside connection in the basement.  Moon is a home inspector in the Pikes Peak region. August gardening calendar BY EILEEN TULLY COLORADO MASTER GARDENER For some reason I get philosophical about gardening in August. The garden is mature now. I know what it will be. Many of my plans ended in disappointment. Seedlings I nurtured indoors throughout mid-April into May drowned in a sudden rain storm the first day I placed them outside. But the William Baffin climbing roses, responding to the abundance of moisture, were phenomenal. In August there’s time to look around and appreciate the garden … and then get back to work. VEGETABLES: • Plant spinach and lettuce mid-month for a fall harvest. • Harvest cucumbers intended for slicing when they are 6 to 8 inches. • Onions are ready to harvest when their green tops fall over. Lift the bulbs and brush off loose soil. Bring them to a protected area like a porch or covered shed. Lay them out in a single layer on a surface that permits ventilation top and bottom. An old screen propped up by bricks along the edge can work. Proper ‘curing’ can take two to three weeks. Do not store any onions that are still wet. When the outer skins have turned papery place them in a mesh bag or old panty hose and place them in a dark and cool place. • Peppers can be harvested anytime they achieve the size you need or want. • Water tomatoes regularly until late August. After that, fruit will ripen more quickly when water is withheld LAWN: • Fertilize between now and mid-September. • Mow as often as needed to a height of 2 ½ to 3 inches GARDEN: • Newly planted perennials, trees and shrubs need

consistent watering to get established. • Fertilize roses for the last time around August 15. Fertilizing later may stimulate new succulent growth that could damage the plant if there is an early frost. • Divide spring blooming perennials if they need it. One way to tell if a perennial needs to be divided is if the plant has a ‘hole’ in the middle and doesn’t look as attractive as it used to or if blooms decrease or stop altogether. Also, if the plant is crowding out neighboring plants, it’s time to divide. • Some plants that benefit from dividing in late summer are: Basket of Gold (Aurinia saxatilis) Daylily (Hemerocallis species), Hardy Geranium (Geranium species), Hosta (Hosta species), Coral Bells (Heuchera species), Coreopsis (Coreopsis species), Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata) and Speedwell (Veronica species). • Powdery Mildew is a fungal disease that appears as patches of white or gray powdery ‘stuff.’ It will most likely attack where plants are crowded and kept damp. Some susceptible plants are garden phlox, bee balm, Virginia creeper vine and roses. In the vegetable family squash and cucumbers can succumb to powdery mildew. To avoid the disease avoid overhead watering where these plants grow and space plants farther apart to encourage air circulation. Sulfur products sprayed during the growing season may help control powdery mildew. When you have questions, Colorado State University Extension has research based answers.
